Volvo The Game – Released

Volvo The Game – Released

Volvo and Simbin have released Volvo – The Game, a free driving simulation containing various Volvo cars that can be raced on two tracks.

Despite being free, Volvo – The Game offers a rich choice of cars as players can get their hands on some of the most famous racing cars in Volvo’s history. Among modern STCC touring cars such as the C30 and the S60, the game includes the BTCC-proven Volvo S40 and two real legends – The 850 and the 240. While the 850 estate is probably the most famous station wagon in racing history, the 240 is a powerful, turbo-powered Group A touring car.

If you´re more into road cars, you´ll like the brand new S60 concept sedan that is also available as fictional racing version. The choice of tracks includes the Gothenburg Eco Arena, a tight and twisty street circuit located in the city’s harbour area. Hosting an annual STCC event, this track is made with door-to-door touring car racing in mind. The other track is Chakya, a Ukrainian road course that should be new to most sim racers as it hasn’t hosted any international events before. The 4.1 kilometer track certainly deserves some mainstream attention though as the layout is quite challenging.

All this is wrapped-up in typical Simbin-style menus, if you´ve ever used any Simbin title you´ll feel right at home. Settings, physics and force feedback are as extensive as in any commercial Simbin title, game modes include time attack, single races and multiplayer. Whether or not you´re into Scandinavian cars, follow the download link below and give Volvo – The Game a try. Follow the download link below, click on “Volvo – The Game” and then “How to install & play” to find the download.

We’ve got a couple mirrors set up at Simjunkies. Some of our guys had trouble getting the download link through the flash player on the Volvo site.

    http://simjunkies.org/index.php?Itemid=211&option=com_docman

First impressions are good. It’s a shame the game is a stand alone. Well worth the download though! :sd:

  • Mad Zak

Downloaded and played it some minutes. not really a simulation game, but it makes a lot of fun! and…it´s free guys. 😉
I´ve seen a bug or something. completing a race and go forward to the results. in the right top corner is a button to go forward to the main menu. but it´s not available- i can´t click it. so i had to shut down via task-manager. 😐
or i´m just too stupid for this world.^^

    greetz,
    Mad Zak

It seems there are a few bugs, but like you mentioned “it’s free”. And free is good.

I have done a couple races, and found it enjoyable. I always hope the free games like this will introduce Simulation Racing to those who might not otherwise try it.

  • Ryan Gilmore

Nice to see them spending a bit more time working on cockpits 🙂

Nice one Grozni. I tried to isolate that url but couldn’t.

  • paupau

You guys managed to enter Competition? That’s online play right? I registered twice and no account confirmation e-mail. Waiting for a couple hours but nothing

  • http://simjunkies.org Marcus

Well I registered, but like you have gotten no Email confirmation. I’ve just played offline against the AI. I did contact someone who has the ability to pass the concern up the chain of command.

  • Siggs

Well, that was released sooner than I expected it to be 😎
    .

  • gtrNL

Registered in-game, and the conformation mail was in my mail box 5 seconds later… Going to try it out in a few moments.

Game is great, not as realistic as Race07 / GTR Evo but hey, it’s free so no complaining…

    Chakya is great.

  • Howie47

Worked good for me. I thought it was a full sim. Guess I’m just not as knowledgable about how a car should feel as some?
    Even my TrackIR worked.

  • http://simjunkies.org Marcus

I’ve reregistered with another Email. Still no reply. :happyevil:

  • Joni

I have same problem about registration too. Not sure but could it be due that fact that my email adress contains small letters, but seems like there is no small letters in register?

  • Sensekhmet

Too bad my faithful Saitek R100 died yesterday so I can’t play it. Oh well, might as well download it now and wait for my DFGT that will arrive tomorrow 😀

  • http://simjunkies.org Marcus

Let me know what you think of that wheel. My DFP has died, and I don’t know if I should spring for the G25, or go with the DFGT.

  • xilix

It seems as though everything is going exactly how I predicted it would go for Simbin. To clarify my stance right off the bat, I’ve always liked Simbin’s software and still do, but I fear they’ve lost their way. They are not developing things correctly and this Volvo game is yet another example of Simbin not sticking to their roots of realism.

The S60 Concept car is supposedly FWD. Well, not according to Simbin. Because both the road version and race version in the game are AWD. This was no doubt something done to please Volvo. I’m guessing the peeps at Volvo tried it and said the car wasn’t handling the way they wanted it to handle, most likely because of the lift-off over-steer associated with driving a front wheel drive car fast into a corner.

Either way I’m just very dissapointed that realism is no longer paramount at Simbin. This is just the latest thing I’ve observed, among many over the last few years (aero problems, shared physics files between unrelated vehicles, Alpha and Beta files being released in final games, physics based on guess work), that demonstrate the fact that physics development at Simbin is no longer based exclusively on real world data. Compromises are being made for one reason or another, and I think we have to ask ourselves what this means for the future of Simbin titles and how we interpret this companies’ future products or; more importantly, how Simbin interprets their own products.

From ‘GTR2’ to ‘Volvo The Game’ we’ve witnessed Simbin grow and change quite a bit. It’s been a hell of a ride, but I’m afraid that those who’re dead serious about sim racing need to ask themselves how they feel about a company that changed their slogan from a passionate and proper “Get Real” to a lifeless and cold “Get The Game”.

Why, sure I’ll get the game, but excuse me while I play my sim first.

  • sdimm

Well, I must say that it´s quote fun to drive these cars. The 850 is really nice.

The Force Feedback however is redicolus with the standard settings. For everyone using a g25, change to these.

    Max on Effects
    100% on strength
    Steeringforce 50%
    Steering vibration 10%

With these settings the car is much more realistic at least.

  • GeraArg

It is compatible with the steam version of Race07? 😀

  • eiwfihaaa

the prizes for this are absolutely appalling.

  • dadada1

    xilix,

GTR2 realistic, you have to be joking? Unless you can show us your FIA driver credentials your only guessing.

  • sdimm

I agree with you. Unless you just drove a racecar, not gokart or something, I too think it´s redicolus when people say some sims arn´t realistic.
This game for instance actually is and I drove a 900kg racecar one week ago on track.

when i completed a race against ai, i got a screen with a trophy on it, saying i won, continue wasnt yet available, but after some 30 secs it was, and was able to continue to main menu, so i dont know if you had the same, otherwise you just have to wait 30 secs and enjoy the trophy. 😉

i really like the volvo 850 and s40, great fun with them 😎

  • Raikku

Is this stand-alone or does it work with earlier RACE’07/Evo/STCC-install?

  • http://simjunkies.org Marcus

    Stand alone.

  • idlejimbo

It’s a standalone install, 600MB download. Presumably done to lie around as giveaway CDs at Volvo dealerships.

Very nice idea by somebody at Volvo.

  • gtrNL

    And for your information.
Converting it to race 07 / GTR Evo will be hard.
    A) It’s SimBin’s latest title so a discussion about ‘down-converting’ has to be fought out.
    B) The encryption used in volvo – the Game is different then the one used in Race 07, so getting into the files will take someone to make a ‘volvo-ed’ 😉 .

  • Gunnar333

Is it possible to use a “H-shifter” with it?

Maybe with an ini tweak? 🙄

  • http://www.srrs-racing.net/ ermax18

I think if you have driven any fully prepped race car on race tires you a reasonable qualified to say if a sim is realistic or not. With the exception of an F1 mod of course. This is the reason I have no interest in F1 mods.

  • Pugamall

Anyone else been able to log in on it ? :sad2:

  • UncleChuckle

Actual FIA GT drivers have driven GTR2 and said that in actuality it’s very close. So until you can provide a copy of your FIA accreditation and tell us what series you currently race in, stop talking bollocks.

Took the 850 out for a spin. Quite literally at one point. Fun to drive. Shame there’s no damage modeling, but that’s to be expected I guess. Especially as these ARE Volvo’s. I still remember when I saw an Escort vs Volvo 850 accident outside my work. The Escort was totaled. The Volvo had barely a scratch on it.

Notice there’s a bunch of WTCC stuff in the Volvo directory. There’s also other interesting bits clearly not used.

Tried registering but it kept failing to connect. Figure you lot broke it.

Hope we can get this stuff into Evo. Of course I wonder if we can copy tracks over from Evo into the Volvo game. (Heads off to try Le Mans.)

Edit: Nope. Simply copying a track into the locations directory didn’t work.

  • Howie47

The online must not be working yet. The developer vide settles the physics debate. The developers got to drive the real cars. Except for the concept car. Which probably doesn’t have finished running gear. So they admit they took license as to how it would handle. Now if they’ll get the online online, before it gets modded too GTREvolution; We’ll see who is king or queen of the Volvo world.

I’m not the one claiming GTR2 is the benchmark by which all driving sims are measured. Yes FIA GT drivers did say its close, but with some aids switched on, ie: probably more like driving race 07. To me theres nothing wrong with how the Volvo game drives.

  • Daniel Benenati

Anyone else not able to register? Mine just stays on “connecting”. :haha:

  • http://www.juniorseo.com pinje

spent an hour or so on it tonight, was looking forward to the 850 and it was fun, shame theres no damage and no working dash on the concept (that was a big surprise) but it’s an ok racer for free and a good advertising idea for volvo.

For us sim-racers it’s a couple of tracks and car models that will get converted to the rest. (I know it’s wrong but it’s going to happen one day)

  • Robert Schmidt

The good thing is, it’s free. But there are many other facts, why i like this promotional game.

The cars are amazing. The S40, 240 and 850 are better modelled than any car in Race07, GTRE or STCC. And when i remember that i didn’t pay for it. Wohooo. Nice job.

And it’s going to be better and better. Luigi’s tool for encryption was updated shortly after the release. So it’s no problem to drive these cars in Evo as well 😀

  • RJC_pt

i dont like the 240, it sits to high… :sad2:
there seems not to be a stering angle setup? the rest of the setup i understand nute the stterring make the game unplayable with my g25 setings.
Also the S60 Concept really as silly grip for a roadcar :weird: :haha:

  • scca1981

I can’t locate much for real specs on the S60… however I know there was another older s60-r model sedan I believe that was all wheel drive. I assume this car is also?

  • erale

There is no information available if the S60 concept is a AWD or FWD car. The older S60 was a FWD car with few exceptions like the R version.

I think it’s a sure bet that the next S60 will also be mainly a FWD car.

  • gtrNL

In the game click on (I think it was) car details. The game tells you The S60 Concept is FWD, has 210 bhp and is 1100 kg’s.

And what are you guys talking about, I raced online before this post was made on VirtualR. But it ain’t much. Just the S60 concept (not the race version) on Gothenburg, quali only, and cars go ‘ghost’ when they come near you, so you can’t crash in to each other (which also means no ‘public-server-crahsers’ everybody’s just doing their laps).

And there has been a new version of WTCCED released, so Chaycka for GTR Evo (personal conversion) it is.

  • DW

So whats the 5.1 sound like? I’ve only got a 2.1 setup.

  • Pugamall

Whats it like on line then?
Cant get a connection, tried all evening to no avail :sad2:

  • Joni

I think that registration have some problems with hotmail, tried my gmail account and got it registered straight away.

  • gtrNL

Altough not shown, the small letters and CAPS letters work, so just UsE it LikE You WaNT It To Be  . Also, with most providers the use of small and BIG letters does not make a difference, i.e. [email protected] and [email protected] are the same…

    5.1?
Great, hope Race On will have it aswell.

    How’s online?
The same as offline, only with less cars and tracks and no crashes. 🙁

  • http://www.srrs-racing.net/ ermax18

DW, is the game supposed to have 5.1 sound? That would be really cool.

  • Pugamall

Is it online MULTIPLAYER or just on line time attack ?

  • eiwfihaaa

Rite, with all this realism chat.
It does help if you’ve driven a proper race car, single seater or otherwise, to know what its like.
You don’t need to be a proffesional race driver, or have a degree in physics, to make a reasonable judgement as to how realistic a sim game is. You can’t take drivers words for it, when the so called proffesional goes ‘gtr2 was realistic’. Well, of course they are going to say that, they are most likely being paid as a marketing tool by simbin, to say things like that. How many drivers have said gran turismo is realistic, when we all know its complete sh*te.

Fortunately I have driven both single seaters and a radical in proper testing (never proffessionally raced of course). I’ll stress that this isn’t a requirement. If you have a reasonable understanding of physics, anyone can make a judgement as to how realistic the game is, even if they’ve never driven a race car. You can TELL how realistic an F1 game is or not, by simply observing what the cars look like to drive on TV, the speed they are taking the corners, the laptimes being produced, the amount of steering angle the driver is applying. It’s pretty obvious to know what 750bhp in a car weighing 600kg must be like, you don’t have to be an F1 driver to know this. The only thing you’d never know is the gforces involved, but thats true in any simracing of course.

what i will say is GTR2 was a backward step, for sure. The cars seemed far to grippy, and didn’t have the weighty feeling that GTR1 had – GT’s are heavy cars. So anyone who thinks GTR2 was actually realistic, or, better than GTR1, are n00bs.

As for this volvo game, i’ve just had a bash in it. It doesn’t seem anymore realistic/unrealistic than any other simbin offering – the touring cars drive similar to gtrevo cars, and they drive as you’d expect. Power understeer, due to FWD, lift off oversteer, as you’d expect. They are fun to drive.

As for the concept car, it’s got that heavy weighty feeling, which, if anyone has driven a 200+hp road car on a track, knows thats what they are like.

Overall the game is adequate, and considering its totally free, you cannot complain really.

I only have one complaint, i’ve tried registering with 3 different email accounts and no success so far. so thats annoying.

  • paupau

I only have one complaint, i’ve tried registering with 3 different email accounts and no success so far. so thats annoying.

Try to register using the same e-mail adresses once again, that worked for me. I’ve waited half a day before doing it all over again. SimBin has to get this sorted sooner or later.

  • scca1981

So the game lists the concept as front wheel drive? Odd.. as the hdc’s are configured for all wheel drive.

  • RJC_pt

the s40r and 850 have engine listed as an inline 4…. a volvo? really? they’re inline 5’s…

  • Sensekhmet

Also it lists the 240 engine as an inline-5. Weird, I always thought it’s the same engine family as the later immortal 2.3l, which was FOUR cylinder.

  • RKipker

Has no one noticed that SIMBIN has corrected the center screen issue for TH2G users. The matrox Support load screen is not simply a advertisement. The menu and race info as well as tachometer and speedometers all load and position themselves in the center monitor in the Volvo game.

Fantastic hope this is also included in the Race On Game!

Thanks SIMBIN for a great free game…despite what some folks think. Great new track as well!

Thanks to Volvo for hiring SIMBIN to develop this game for all gamers and I hope they get some great feedback for there investment. I’m going to test drive a Volvo this weekend. :sd:

  • pivecko

You Boys, I really like this game and I think the physics of this game is really good made (I drive Volvo S60 with mouse, and on manual transmission (controlled with scrolling wheel) and I think the car is behaving really). And to the problem with FWD or AWD. If you would spend more time than one minute doing the options, you would find something like acceleration sensitivity – I turned it to full (100%) and now when I accelerate, the wheels are overspinning (even though on gear 2 and 3 (!!!!!!!!!! really strong engines)) and here I nicely see which of FWD or AWD the car has.

erale: There is no information available if the S60 concept is a AWD or FWD car. The older S60 was a FWD car with few exceptions like the R version.I think it’s a sure bet that the next S60 will also be mainly a FWD car.

RJC_pt: the s40r and 850 have engine listed as an inline 4…. a volvo? really? they’re inline 5’s…

Do you think that the 5 cylinder engine was the only one, which the Volvo S40 raced with? I don’t think so. I remember the nice game named ToCA 2, where the S40 had a five cylinder engine. But I think in this game it’s made good (the number of valves is correct)
