Targa Florio for rFactor 1.0 – Released

Targa Florio for rFactor 1.0 – Released

The Targa Florio Conversion Team has released the Targa Florio for rFactor, adding an epic 72 kilometer race track to the simulation.

Originally created for Grand Prix Legends, the track is considered to be one of the most dangerous and craziest venues ever used in motorsports, making it the ultimate challenge for every rFactor racer.

Features

-Dynamic skybox
-Multiple road bump levels
-Added treelines, terrain to cover gaps in the mesh
-Historical Grid
-60 cars support
-Multi-materials throughout
-Billboard trackside objects
-New double-material foliage
-Movable objects with mass (will damage your car if you hit them)
-Visgroups for best performance

Due tue the extreme size of the place, the Targa Florio puts the rFactor engine to its limits. Check out the official FAQ here for tips on performance improvements and what to do against flickering shadows.

The track was originally made for Grand Prix Legends, the Targa Florio Conversion Team has equipped it with new textures, shaders and lots of other improvements. All in all, over 30 people worked on creating the virtual version of this stunning track, the full credits can be found here.

To get an idea of this epic track and what it takes to tame it, check out the VirtualR review here to shorten the download waiting time.

Located on the Italian Island of Sicily, the 72 kilometer track is one of the most epic motorsport race tracks ever used. As safety concerns became an influence in international motorsports, the Targa Florio sports car race lost its world championship status and is still run as an Italian rallye today.

This is GREAT!
Greetings from Italy 🙂

• DeDios

W la Sicilia! 😀

• DeDios

i took the 911 RSR 3.0 from HistorX mod (a Targa winner). Just WOW. Please use 3 pedals and heel and toe!! EPIC! I need to learn track before try to push hard!

• Mitos

Thank U very much, guys! Great work on shots!)… Can`t wait to taste it.

• F1Racer

This looks incredible. Can’t wait to try it out. I’ve got no chance of learning this though as I still haven’t totally learnt the Nords.

Thanks to the guys for all the hard work on a gargantuan track.

• Lars Koldeweij

Alright, managed to do the first lap in 43 minutes driving an Escort. I had to die 38 times to do so.

• F1Racer

haha. Is there anywhere you can stop off for a drink or a pee ? 🙂

• JohnSc

I already manage to do a lap with Porsche 911 (Historic GT&TC 1.01). Only one word came to my mind: AWESOME.

• GTEvo

• JohnSc

Turn damage multiplier to 0%!!!! 🙂

• John Dalton

MY dad is having trouble loading, is anyone else having problems?

• Art-J

Maybe it’s just insufficient resources problem? For example, on my pretty old computer with WinXP and 2 gigs of RAM, first loading takes 2 minutes 45 seconds.

• John Dalton

Well, my dad has a quadcore system with more than enough ram to load 🙂

• Andreas Neidhardt

Awsome track, thanks to each artist involved in that project 🙂

• phil23

I don’t like long tracks, but I think I’ll have to take a gentle drive around here at somepoint as the texture work looks amazing!!! Well done to the team as this was obviously a job of passion 🙂 .

• John DiFool

190 Megs? How in holy tarnation did you guys pull that off? I was expecting 400 megs packed, 1 gig unpacked…

Mirror 4 is very fast. In any event thank you for giving this jaded gamer something to salivate over at long last. Back after what will surely be a ton of laps today.

• John DiFool

Oh, the RAM patch will probably help…

Linky

• DeDios

Try to use 4GB ram fix for rFactor.exe!

• melanieuk

Great track, some mods do not load with this track, rfactor will “exit to desktop” if the track doesnt like a mod, best to use a mod the team has recommended.

• Lars Koldeweij

There’s a good café somewhere halfway Collesano. Just a shame Red Bull wasn’t available back then… :p You’ll need it.

• Rantam

Keep in mind that the first time the track is loaded the .HAT file has to be created. That’s why the reason the first time you load the track it takes so long.

About your problem, try getting the .HAT file from someone else who already generated it. That may help you to load the track, i don’t know. If you provide with more information we may help you a bit more. Do you get any error message during loading? Have you enabled rF logging? you may find the error there.

By the way, for a start don’t try to load the track with AI. Launch it on a testing session as that will save resources.

Regards

• DeDios

You can take a good Espresso or, a classic sicilian summer food, the “Granita siciliana”!
Anyway, first lap here too….45 mins with an RSR…tons of errors but what a track!

• John DiFool

Have you guys tried this at night? Incredible effort-words cannot describe.

• Eddie Jansson

Someone must convert this masterpiece to GTR Evo! D:

• John Dalton

Can I ask how long this should roughly take to load?

• ZombieJim

Far too much fun to push, I keep throwing myself off the track with my over-exuberance, but I’m slowly getting better. Thanks a million times over to both the original, and coversion crews who gave us this – for free no less.

• Wish Bone

Wondering what my X1 laptime will be… hehehehe

• kalle

From the previous news post, 50 secs with 8 gigs of ram and SSD. I’m guessing at least double or triple that for normal HDD.

• JGoenR

Thanks! 🙂

• DeDios

Here i’m under 7 64bit, 4gb ram and a normal HDD. Surely takes no more than 2 mins (no AI).

• dknine

Many thanks to all involved! Fantastic track.

• Crimson7

got 47 minutes in my 914. All I can say is WHAT A TRACK! Had a few traffic issues with the mini’s and the Cortina’s etc. But all positive here! Thank you The Targa Florio Conversion Team and the Historx team (for providing my 914) You guys are gonna love it. Worst moment was just lapping a mini and my fuel warning light appeared, I was like “No don’t die on me now!”

• Carbonfibre

Mind = Blown

More people need to know about this.
It’s an achievement beyond the small realms of simracing, but racing games in general imo.

• Rantam

Yep, always check your fuel before leaving pits! 🙂

Ps. Thanks for your kind words 😉

• spacekiller

Really great track! I was surprised by the quality and deatil of such long track. Thank you for making possible to experience one of the best races ever! 🙂

• spacekiller

Looking forward to try it with Historix 2 😉 Anyway thank for historix mod, it is great combination with Targa Florio.

• crob ol

Any idea about “Shadow Caster” Error?
I don’t know how to solve it, and i’m on a fresh rF installation.

I will try on the Targa Staff forum.

• DeDios

Are you using DX9?

• crob ol

I suppose, It was on Auto…

• JohnSc

Same here, W7, 4gb ram ddr2, “normal” Seagate HDD, less than 2 minutes for sure.

• Jos

less then a minute, with 2 gb ram and normal 7200 rpm and XP

• JohnSc

OMG…tried a nightime lap with BMW CSL Alpine…what a great feeling. This is a historic day for Rfactor, thank you so much to the conversion team, and to the Historic GT&TC mod creators, i can’t imagine years ago that one day i could simulate this combination…MAGIC

• BSR-WiX

just superb 🙂

• 6e66o

I´d like to say thanks to all for the kind words in the name of the whole Targa Florio Conversion Team.
It´s great to see that you enjoy the track as much as we do.

Also i need to thank Ginetto and the GPL Team again for making this possible!

To everyone experiencing problems,
right now i can only recommend to lower shadow-/track-/texture details.

• Riches

Or upgrade your hardware!
It’s worth it!

• GeraArg

Thanks a LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =-X =-X =-X

P.S. Where I can get a bigger fuel tank? hahahahah

• Samuel Korthof
• Samuel Korthof

’65 I mean ofcourse

• Fistro

35 min first atempt 997 RSR, some spins without 30 min for sure.

• Philip Oakley

Well, put it on DX9 and see. If that doesn’t work, on DX7, or DX8.

• Fistro

Have the same problem too. To solve it put your shadows at medium. it will load, i have 1gb ram, and 7600GT and i run it on MAX settings, 1280×960, level 2 AA, smooth, with no AI, and shadows on medium, on cockpit view. No problem with RAM.

• Crimson7

yeah I’ve given my car a much bigger fuel tank. But if anyone wants to, anyone wanna test this track online?

• Crimson7

better than me, only 47 minutes in a Porsche 914 here.

• Coen Van den Nulft

Superb work guys, i tried this with a Lotus Elan and i’ve gotta say, it was the most fun i’ve ever had in Rfactor!

• StJohn Featherstone-Haugh

Loads fine, looks great, fantastic effort chaps. Sadly however, after after a few minutes out on track the sky starts to fill with distorted versions of the surrounding scenery (trees, buildings etc. I’ve tried turning down the settings but it doesn’tt seem to make much difference. Machine is fairly new, reasonable spec, runs on Win 7. Any ideas much appreciated – I have driven the track quite a bit in GPL but really fancy trying out the Ferrari 312 and 512 and Alfa T33 on it.

Thanks in advance

• Arnold-Carter Kingpong Wong

about to have a go with my One-77 now 😛

• Marek Szytmanski

First of all thanks for such a nice track i love it and will for long time , anather think have look guys on screen shoot No. 22 , 🙂 i think we nieed same size to driver on this track 😉

• noneofyourbusiness

Indeed, thank you very much GPL Team, without whom we would not have had the pleasure to drive what is undoubtedly the most charming course I’ve driven in sim racing. I love it, ever since it came to GPL.

A great amount of thank you to all who contributed to this conversion, you have my gratitute.
This has given fresh life to rF, I wish it would do the same for other gmotor based sims.

cheers 🙂

• Richard Osborne

Yeah what an epic map. just cruising through it and taking pics 😀

• David Kerry

Just a small question, at the end of the load screen, rfactor stops working 🙁 have tried both testing and race modes, will getting the HAT file from someone help? if so could somone be kind enough to fwd me a copy?

any help would be great
Dave

• Rantam

The first time you load the track rF will need a good amount of time to create that .HAT file (will be more or less depending on your machine). During this process the loading bar will remain stopped, with a 20% to go, more or less.

Unless you get an error message be patient. After some minutes it should continue loading and eventually you’ll be able to drive it 🙂

Regards

• Samuel Korthof

Holy sh*t those are HUGE!

• kimikaze

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 🙂

• Sputnik Wood

here are the hat files for anyone that needs it or think it may help in the loading of the track.

http://www.multiupload.com/YB4TKCOQK5

it goes into Userdata/LOG/HAT

• Marcel Penzkofer

Noone can really compare these, it depends on the Graphic-Level you use. Everything on LOW, you get easily to around a minute, everything on high it will take a lot more time especially the first time you load it when the game has to create the HAT-File which is quite a while with such a big track.

• Captain Underpants

I did a 40:26 in a Caterham last night, and could be faster with a clean lap. Totally awesome track, This will be my obsession for the forseeable future.

• crob ol

OK, it works on my old PC Setting absolutely all graphic details on minimum or OFF.
But instead, the track don’t look so good.
I will need to upgrade my computer to enjoy all new texture job.

• Explosive Face

“Movable objects with mass (will damage your car if you hit them)”

This isn’t a good thing. The road signs have enough mass to send you into an unavoidable spin off the road, but the collisions suck so you can hit them even if you’re a foot away from them. There’s one sign in particular that is right on the apex of a turn on the other side of a fence that borders the track, but it has collisions on so if you get too close to the fence you crash.

And in races, the little black and white marker things get thrown onto the middle of the track, making them tiny, unavoidable race wreckers.

• 6e66o

I know sometimes it can get a bit funky.
rFactor doesnt do the best job when it comes to collision detection and physics of moveable objects.

But i still think the immersion is a lot better when you actually have to avoid them,
instead of just running them over as if it was nothing 😉

• DeDios

Arnold share it with us!! :PP

• DeDios

Guys, you should try it with Alfa GTA (historX mod). Holy god, that’s the perfect car!! not fastest car but..a fantastic handling. No helps, heel-and-toe…just perfect. Seems to be in TDU:sicily 😎

• F1Racer

Yeah, thanks to rFactors dodgy collision detection it can be a little frustrating. Like hitting a wall on the outside of a curve and you end up bouncing on and off it almost stuck to it.
I was 36mins into the lap and I took a corner too quickly basically because as I was approaching it, it didnt look as tight as it turned out to be. I ended up on a grass embankment which was so steep I couldn’t drive out of it and back onto the road.
And as there was no ‘reset vehicle’ button I had to restart the lap. I was in a HistorX TC65 Porsche 911 at the time and doing rather well.
I changed it for a 2011 F1 Sauber. 🙂 It’s tricky let me tell you and the bumps didn’t help.

I am now waiting to do this with other cars on track. Maybe a load of Mini Coopers from HistorX.
My time so far is not really close to what some guys have been setting but I’m not really fussed as it’s the experience of driving this mammoth track that is where it’s at for me right now.

It’s an amazing track and the effort to get it to this stage must have been incredible. No low res grass textures either. Very scenic too (those mountains in the distance).

All you have to do is pray that when you are a well into the lap that you don’t make a mistake that puts you in a part of the track where you can’t rejoin the road. And yes, for the first time I used ‘invulnerability’ because I wanted to see the whole track and I didnt want suspension failure or a missing wheel to stop that 🙂 I`ll turn that off when I’m feeling brave enough.

This track, for me, gives the HistorX mod a whole renewed lease of life as it has to be THE perfect mod to race here. I don’t even want to think about racing on this in the dark but there’s a part of me that can’t wait to try 🙂

This in rF2 with HistorX 2 will be quite something.

• Rantam

Thanks for your nice words. I’ve always preferred the smaller cars for this track, like the Cortina, GTA, Elite or Porsche 911 2.0. Being so twisty and almost without any straight (apart of the one present in the last section of the track) it’s probably better having a nimble car than a heavy and powerful one.

So, even after driving the WIP Ferrari P330 or the GT40 I always go back to the smaller ones. They are so much FUN there! 🙂

• DeDios

Yeah i’m totally agree with you 😉

• Jos

caterham r500 is also great with this track, and probably one of the fastest ways to go around there.

• Rantam

Well, i have to admit that i didn’t expect this kind of HistorX revival, but that just adds another reason to say thanks to the Targa Florio Conversion Team and of course to the original GPL’s version authors for the amazing job they’ve done 🙂

I haven’t driven the v1.0 cars for a very long time, but with the release of the Targa i decided to spend some time online to see what people think about it and to try to help those having problems loading the track or with the mod.

I saw that most of the guys in the server were driving the more nimble cars (not seeying a GT40 surprised me a lot, i have to say), and that allowed some close racing (at least until some crashed in a turn, which was quite often, hehe). But yes, people had a good amount of fun trying to dominate this mighty track 🙂

Regarding the cars and how the next version of the mod will be, you will see that there’s a big difference (physics wise) between v1.0 and the next version (this will be VERY noticeable on the 65s cars).

Apart of the (almost) endless list of cars available (many of them from the Targa Florio) the first thing you’ll notice for sure when the new version of the mod is finally released will be how much the force feedback has improved (it’s simply a different world). In fact, is hard for me to drive with the same confidence the 1.0 cars, as by comparison they don’t transmit so much information through the steering wheel.

Anyway, we hope that the new version of the mod will worth the wait. Hopefully it’ll be the perfect partner for the amazing Targa Florio.

Thanks for your nice words! 🙂

• DeDios

So…can’t wait for HistorX 2.0! 🙂

• Blacker

Absolutely astounding work guys. I can’t say enough about how incredible this is.

And one thing I would also like to note… Thank you, Rantam, for showing the community respect and thanking those who thank you. Some of the other modders/Mod teams(AHEM enduracers) should take some notes from you and understand that without users, their efforts go unnoticed. The users are part of the equation too, so thank you for your humility and efforts to be a part of the community.

Keep up the spectacular work!

• John DiFool

Try editing this line in your .plr file:

Debris Removal=”100.00000″ // Seconds until stationary debris is removed from track

HTH.

• Mario Mascolo

@Rantam do you have tried the track with ferrari 250 gto? the symbol car on the loading screen 😛

• SBKRacer

where can I get HistoricX for free? GPL is not for sale anymore 🙁

• Marcel Penzkofer

As far as i know there is only a Ferrari 275 in the HistoriX mod, no 250?

• Mario Mascolo

ferrari 250 will be introduced in historx 2.0, i know Rantam has that car arghhhhhh 😛

• Rantam
• svizzy

you need gt legends for historx

• Rantam

Thanks for thanking the thanks! 😀

Anyway let’s give all those thanks to the Targa Florio conversion team and the original creators of the GPL version. We’re having so much fun today because of their work! 😉

Regards

• Rantam

I guess that’s what he was trying to write. Not the first time or the last we’re going to see such mistype 🙂

• Marcel Penzkofer

After a couple of tests:

Great, amazing, stunning, magnificent, unbelievable track!
Even though I never really got the virus of the Nordschleife (I found it quite easy to learn and drive free of any mistake, other than these stupid modern Tilke-Tracks which I find a lot more difficult than the Nordschleife) and I have never really been into long racing tracks, I absolutely love this one. Especially with an old car it’s so much like driving around in a world when Television was like everything had a red/orange filter on it, everybody loved to drive around in their shiny new Alfa GTAs, Renault Alpines and Lotus Corinas. It’s virtual atmosphere at it’s best and these are not just some words, especially not from a perfectionism and very critical person like me.

So “thank you” to the whole Team around the original track and at the same loudness and respect “thank you” aswell to the whole conversion team, from their main initiator to their latest test-drivers… Amazing work.

• Rantam

Yep, i drove it there, but as i’ve written before i prefer smaller cars in this track. I get busy enough at the steering wheel with them to jump to bigger leagues. 🙂

• Marcel Penzkofer

Ah okay. Damn I want it too :D.

• Marcel Penzkofer

Great to hear these things Rantam. Just one thing I always wanted to know… will this new Force Feedback be based on a very well configurated rF-FFB version or is it more like LEOs/realfeel? Because – if I’m honest – with realfeel I never really got the feeling of driving a REAL car on my computer, it felt too soft no matter how I changed the file. Would be great to have just one FFB-option available and this one is perfect then :].

• svizzy

can’t put in words how thankful i am. this is the kind of track i always wanted for rfactor long twisty open roads in a beautiful scenery. PERFECT! have to say thank you to all the guys involved. so enough with the words going back driving.

• 6e66o

@ John
I´m not sure but i think this only affects car parts, not track objects.

• F1Racer

Yep, SRT should be giving this one a big mention!

• Mario Mascolo

little car…mmm i think now maserati birdcage… is it adapt?

• Mario Mascolo

or bmw 2002…

• svizzy

a whole episode. red bull should put it in their rfpro simulator and release a full lap video of marco driving it. i like to see a whole lap with one of the old heroes behind the wheel. there is really not much footage available from these races. or does somebody know where i can find a long onboard video from those days.(long ofcourse, not those ~2min youtube clips)

• 6e66o

” red bull should put it in their rfpro simulator and release a full lap video of marco driving it”
+1:D

Best footage of the track i´ve seen is featured in “The Speed Merchants”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouok2DV0fjc

And of course there is the “Mountain Legend” documentary about Targa Florio 1965:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_SV9FAX0tE&playnext=1&list=PLE28B31BC986F1E7D

• Samuel Korthof

There are less legal versions indeed….I don’t think moderators of virtualr.net are pleased with us sharing illegal mods though.

• svizzy

yes. those two are very nice. watched both during your countdown. mountain legend on youtube and speed merchants is in the dvd collection. strongly recommended. they said in the mountain legend porsche recorded their laps on film an the drivers had to watch them. would be nice of them if they would scan those in hd and make them available for the public. if they still exsist. little daydreaming here.

• KlosterKatten

I wish i could try this, but i hurt my wrist and wont be able to do any racing for a while… which is driving me man.. get it? Driving.. hehe.

🙁

• alucardmct

Really a great job. The track is amazing with its climbs and descents, a lot of corners where winning second by second.
I think all simulator players must drive this track at least once to understand its difficulty

I did 35:45,234 with the Subaru Impreza

• KlosterKatten

I bought GTL in raceroom, contacted the historx team and they helped me fix it. Though digital version is 9.99 if your willing to pay that.

• F1Racer

Just had another thought, won’t this make the next ‘Track of the Year’ award on RFcentral a bit of a foregone conclusion ? 🙂

Actually maybe thats not fair to other great tracks recently like Norisring etc.

• Jacobo Segade

http://i54.tinypic.com/23lo8ly.jpg
WTF? Only with this track. all mods.
help please

• F1Racer

Stealth car, cool!

• John DiFool

Nope, this other line affects parts which break off of vehicles:

Parts Duration=”1800.00000″ // Seconds after parts break off before disappearing

“Debris” specifically means traffic cones, pylons, signs, and other track objects which get displaced from their original positions.

• SBKRacer

thanks Rantam I didn’t know they were still selling GPL copies! 🙂

• SBKRacer

know I got confused lol I was thinking it was GPL but its GTL!

• David Kerry

Thanks guys
No luck 🙁 the loading bar will complete and then get an rfactor has stopped working error message and the program dies
dave

• Marcel Penzkofer

I actually started sort of a Hotlap-Ranking for this track, because the only measureable thing that remains from a lap around this magnificent track is the laptime, starting off with brand new tyres and a max. filled car and ending the lap with completely the opposite .

Hotlaps @ MB-Racing.de

So far it’s only in german but that might change depending on responses 🙂

Everything else you take with you after a lap is so much more than just a lap time, I know 🙂 .

• 6e66o

Did you test it? Does it work online?
Could be considered cheating 😛 😉

• Mariusz Moroz

Beast of a track! Great job! Yet to complete a race without destroying a car but I love it.

• Andree Marx

same to me. no idea what to do…..

• Chris Wright

The most remarkable thing about this track is that it’s for free. It is one of the most incredible achievements in the entire history of sim racing and it’s available to everyone at zero cost. Absolutely remarkable. Installed it last night and didn’t know where to start – tried out 1970 CSGT and then made the giant leap to Cart Factor. Both completely engrossing and there’s a whole world of different car sets to play with. Extends the lifespan of RFactor immeasurably. When you consider how monetised flight simming has become, it says an awful lot about the race sim community that talented individuals are prepared to dedicate themselves to their hobby, with no prospect of financial reward. I find iRacing a devisive force in our hobby, whereby every little improvement comes at a cost. In Targa Florio for rFactor, we have the true heartbeat of our hobby. The insight into one of the most charismatic and evocative motorsport events is wonderful. Congratulations!

• Niels Heusinkveld

He’ll destroy that car so thats not good for his project 😛

• Ed Luna aka eddiespag

I am having trouble installing HistorX. I get an ‘error opening file for writing’. This is after I go through the first four steps into the installer. I have GT Legends CD disc 1 in the pc cd tray. My OS is W7 64bit. Any help would be appreciated so that I can experience all the hoopla that everyone is experiencing driving the Targa Florio with the HistoriX GT and TC cars. Thanks to the conversion team for their dedicated and wonderful job with this track!

• DeDios

mmh have you tried to re-download full package? try to download torrent version, i have it and works great 🙂

• Riches

The Lotus Elan is the perfect companion for this track!
A blast!

• Ed Luna aka eddiespag

Thank you. I have tried the two pack (pt 1 & 2) from the HistorX site and also the 11part(s) from rapidshare, with no luck. I do make sure that it is all in one folder so the .exe has access to all files. Oh well. I will figure something out. I am fairly experienced and this issue I have never had. If you can think of anything else, I would definitely appreciate. In the meantime I am so happy to hear that you are enjoying the Targa Florio immensely. 🙂

I also strongly recommend to get the v1.02 of the mod’s manual (only in English, sorry), as it contains VERY important instructions to configure the mod and your steering wheel properly to get the best of this mod

Thank you Rantam for your great passion and caring, not only for your work but for our community as well. I do want to give DeDios a special thanks. I took his advice and was successful with the installation. Thank you so, so very much!

Small cars have the advantage that if you make a mistake you can still “alive” 😛
Anyway, I “discovered” that isn’t very hard to learn the layout, the 80% of the layout have similar turns (curves, etc I don’t know how is the accurate translation =-X ) and has a BRILLIANT job with the signboards that help a LOT!!!!!!!!!
This is really a HUGE and amazing job!!!! THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried reducing the graphic detail? Enable the logging mode in rfactor. If the error appears in the log we’ll have a clue about what is causing the problem.
