rFactor 2 – Two Rainy Cockpit Previews

rFactor 2 – Two Rainy Cockpit Previews

Image Space Incorporated has just released two new high-resolution previews of their rFactor 2 title, showing some of the much-anticipated wet weather effects from cockpit view.

We get to check out rain effects on the windscreen in an unidentified Nissan GT or Touring Car, peeking outside into a wet and empty pitlane.

rFactor 2 will introduce various improvements to the modding-friendly simulation including weather, driver animations and a refined graphics engine. ISI has not announced a definite release date yet, the company is still aiming to release their newest title by the end of 2010 though.

Update: As pointed out in the comments by Marcel Penzkofer, the car in the screenshot is the Nissan GT-R GT1 that competes in the GT1 World Championship. The car isn’t the first GT1 car to show up in rFactor 2 previews as earlier menu previews had shown a Corvette C6.R GT1 in the background. A rather interesting development..

  • opticalust

    very nice!

  • Timothy Wheatley

Should note just to be clear: WIP! 🙂

And while I have your attention, find ISI/rFactor on Facebook and Twitter… You know you want to…

  • FasterThanFTL

  • Alexandre

    Amazing!!! Can’t wait !

  • scca1981

    Wow very nice.

  • GeraArg

    Looks just GREAT!  😎

  • Mike Oppenheimer

    Wow looking great!

What car is that though? Wasnt aware of a Nissan in there… 🙂

  • Marcel Penzkofer

The car seems to be the Nissan GT-R GT1 which takes part in the World Championship.

  • GeraArg
  • marius

    Guranteed purchase for me.

How do the new cars feel like in comparison to iRacing Tim?

  • Kiwiiz

  • Sakazura

    ugly  :-E :-E

  • Aaron Carlisle

    Troll alert.

  • Carbonfibre

    What a nice surprise!
Was this captured in motion? I don’t understand the ghosting.

Short note to the development team: When it comes to planning for longevity, find the texture/shader that looks good, then double the resolution. Or the community will end up re-making textures for everything again.

  • yokelhama

Yes it looks abit too extreme like he needs use his wipers, could still be WIP I guess.

  • aceruber

seems good to me ,just hope it runs on my old pc

  • Ahmad

WOW! That’s the most realistic rain effect I’ve seen in any game! 😀

  • Rantam

Nice indeed, very well done!. Not just the raining effect, but the cockpit itself.

And look that, we have an animated fan there! can’t wait to have animations available for modding 🙂

Hope it will be released soon…

  • Jux

OMG! Need raincoat! Wait the minute … that is in the game!

  • Kai Odloschinski

That looks really nice indeed. Most impressive rain screen i´ve ever seen in an racing simulation. ISI is doing a great job on that.  Can´t wait for more. 😎

  • Asphalt

  • Koen Calleyl

    Most impressive!

  • Koen Calleyl

    Really impressive!

  • Lenniepen

Nice! Any gues on the track?

  • Lenniepen

Nice! Any guess on the track? Left-side pit-building, so there are only a few possibilities

  • crosschris

Looks really good…do we get wipers too??

  • Simosimosimo

    😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 I’m so happy!

  • DeDios

Looks stunning!! 🙂 just one question: is there a blur/motion effect??

  • ZowLe

Looks like an American track, look at the flags in the second pic

  • gniewko

what i like the most is the real lighting!!! good job…looking forward to it 🙂

  • Lenniepen

If you look very closely you can see the dashboard reflecting in the window!
You can see the fan and the black tube. Especally in the first pic.

  • Hompe

F*ck me that looks good 😀

  • Mitch

Oh wow it is too didnt see that :O, nice find.

  • caio89

That would be so awesome if they included the whole FIA GT1 series in rF2!

  • Ghostrider

Looks really nice indeed. I hope we’ll get the official release date soooooooon !!!!  😀

  • Kiwiiz

historic formula one, fia gt1,…whats next? group c??

  • Suarez16

@kiwiiz don’t you know VirtuaLM is holding back their mods for rF2? 😉

  • Suarez16

    Shots look great btw!!!

  • nick

I need to buy this thing :-$ how much will it costs?

  • Kiwiiz

    lets hope so…

  • Rooster

Judging from the map on the wheel, i’d say Mills Metropark (…..again.)

In times when games push to have strong HDR and bloom effects, I really apreciate the looks of rFactor2, trying to look realistic without uncanny effect.

  • Lenniepen

    I agree with that.
It appears to me that the graphics-engine is a visual representation of the physics, not just a fake overlay with HDR/bloom, independent from the physics.

  • RedSun

HOLY SHIT! Incredible job by ISI!

  • Miep

    Apart from GT5 😉

  • F1Racer

I have no idea what that means 🙂 .  Anyone ?

  • F1Racer

Lenniepen, I have no idea what that means 🙂 .  Anyone ?

  • Samuel

Thats not exactly new to the G motor 2 engine.  All the Race 07/GTR games have the same affect.

  • Samuel

From what I remember rFactor 2 uses the same graphics engine and code as rF1.  All they have done is reworked and optimized it to bring out more potential so hopefully that means the impact on the PC wont be too much more then it is now.

  • RoNo

Alright…thats it i know its going to be awesome

  • migf1

I beleive those are the best rain effects we’ve ever seen in a racing simulation! Simply impressive!

  • RKip

You can see the dash refelectio in Shift as well.  However, this is good for rfactor.

  • Suarez16

It would be nice to see a video of rain!

  • Doby

F1 2010 anybody 🙂 Looks 10 times better with the rain.

  • KastaRules

Yeah! I have just got a boner!  😎

  • DaOfflineRacer

Yeah rain, I can see from the screesnhots the rain physics will be great

  • logos

    Looks really good!

  • Mr. A

Tim, we need a video of this ASAP! 😀

  • shum94

    I hope it wont…

  • sommergemuese

Never thought I will say this but I like these rFactor 2 Screens 😉

No idea how it is looking in Motion but the stills are better looking than F1 2010

  • John DiFool

Now I’ll just need someone to make a Rain-X mod, and I’m all set. 😎

  • Firestarter

    It feels wet… my pants…

  • shum94

This is going to be the start of a new era in simracing. Rain = Skills and i’m going to have fun under rain conditions.

I hope the engine at 400 hz will allow us to catch some crazy slides like in real allows too.

Now this car in rF2 is a really nice addition, nice surprise.

  • stabiz

This looks good! Nice to see some proper out of the box content as well.

I dont understand the obsession with rain lately, though. It will be overly popular in the beginning and then everybody will run in the dry. Like in other games with changing conditions. Leagues on the other hand will probably run dynamic weather, but I dont see the pub servers running it after say three months.

  • crosschris

    Boo! Arcade rain 😉 .

  • DeDios

I’d like to see dinamic effect “steamed up” glass, would be great!

  • 07wtcc

the graphics of cockpit is the same level as GTR2

  • Kiwiiz

    not really

  • F1Racer

A guest liked you getting a boner.  This place is getting too wierd.

  • Why is there a double image of every thing out side the cockpit? Except for the center windshield support, which also has a double image. At first I thought is was a 3D picture?

  • Ceplin

Ignore him Kiwiiz ,he’s just doing his usual job everytime a new post is up here

  • Doby

Yes the physics of the windscreenwiper look very arcade too

  • Your name (required) ;)

now im interested even more, now im waiting for news about the rallymode, last i heard it was getting big updates?

imagine these graphics with rallymode done well and to support modding ?

  • Timothy Wheatley

I believe he was likely moving when he snapped it.

  • paskowitz

Funny when GT5 introduces weather its met with thunderous exile. Yet 2 screenshots of rFactor 2 set the world ablaze.

  • migf1

    I second that.

  • Error13

the driver is drunk sees double.

  • migf1

Imagine though being able to re-create lets say VLN down to the latest weather detail 🙂

  • migf1

It could be a very pre-mature attempt in recretating glass refraction, though! At least I surely hope so 🙂

  • spliff

yeah looks a bit odd, like a 3d vision?! or some strange blur shader? all in all those shots look very promising! 🙂

  • spliff

because gt5 is shite, and rf2 will shake the simworld?! 🙂

  • spliff

i believe he is confused with gfx-engine, rendering, post-effects and phyiscs and mixed it up a bit. 😀

  • jad

Maybe in motion the effect is good

  • klo-che

What is the rally mode ?

  • Stu

The hardcore PC believers who wil not move on……….

  • 07wtcc

when i like things i say “wow, cool; it’s good; looks awesome etc.”. when i don’t, i say it too. what’s bad here? should i say like others (majority) that this is “awesome”? i don’t think so. i’m not a “fanboy”. i didn’t write that rF2 sucks  just its cockpit’s graphics look 4+ year old

  • Taxi645

To me the collour saturation on this shots looks a lot more realistic (lower) compared to earlier shots. Seems to be heading in the right direction.

  • stabiz

Yep, I think its cool, just saying it will probably be (new) Meganes in the dry after people (re)discover its hard to race in the rain without practice first. 🙂

  • shum94

Looks the track on the screen is Essington.

  • shum94

  • anon

Or, possibly, because despite talking about how good those weather details are going to be in GT5, we haven’t actually seen that much of the wet weather system in action, and nothing from the drivers perspective.

  • shum94

If the physics engine allow proper slip angle, there is no reason to imagine that rain feature will be dead after 2 months in public servers.

  • jonneymendoza

holy shit i thought that was GT5!!

  • stabiz

    Sacre bleu.

  • 07wtcc

if we compare the capabilities of GPU of 2006 and 2010-11…

  • Hottypants

Moi je mange mon camembert avec plaisir parce que mon frigo ne marche pas non plus et je n’ai rien de fraises dans mon jardin

  • Mike Oppenheimer

It isnt, its got American flags atop the garages…unless they moved the location of Essington for rf2.

  • aTze

  • Gne

Hey people, it’s a screenshot, not a movie… easy to make nice screenshot, now i want to see water rolling the car…

  • Timothy Wheatley

    Point to point racing, maybe…

  • Timothy Wheatley

Full rain is one extreme. It’s really all about the huge void between cold full rain and blistering heat and dryness. Real-world drivers don’t just drive in the rain like they don’t just drive at night, with both of those things they have to contend with every stage of those things, for night that’s obviously including being blinded by the sun a lot. Etc.

  • Timothy Wheatley

They probably want to develop it further before they’d let me do that. Darn it. 🙂

  • GTEvo

that must be awesome..Fiorano, Mugello, Nürbrgring from FVA converted to rF2 😎

  • Carbonfibre

There are GT5 videos in the rain out now. PD always have they’re own unique way of implementing features in a way no other will, my criticism is that the effect is way too opaque at times to the point of not seeing anything. But the rain effect is tied to the physics and inertial forces AND particle effects are tied to wind as shown in the videos.
Overall, everybody seems to be progressing at the same pace since we know rF2 has wind and humidity as well. Everybody also has they’re own way of integrating these features too. ISI is certainly keeping pace with the big industry players in the crucial foundations.
Btw, I have 1 criticism with rF2 weather at this early stage, and that is I feel the windscreen shader isn’t looking as sharp up close.

  • felipe

dont you want iracing converted to rf2 as well??  *DONT_KNOW*

  • Your name (required) ;)

    wicked !
    looking forward to it

  • KastaRules

  • Mike Oppenheimer

Sure he does…he wants everything for free…

  • Carbonfibre

rF2 might as well come packaged with the Jolly Roger.

There is no hope for the standalone content. The community is already intent on bagging content from other games making them worthless, while at the same time adding to our own collective becoming the ultimate bastard racing sim. Of course, I fully condemn these efforts!  No, I really do…  :-$

  • stabiz

Stuff like this is usually just baiting, although I am sure you actually mean it.

  • dknine

Ai caramba! me likes 😎 😎

  • JGoenR

    Nice previews!

  • zzz

please God please… this year or q1 2011

  • shum94

When it’s raining its raining 😉

  • Mark

Anybody knows if HDR or Bloom will be implemented on the new graphics engine?

  • Jack_NL

Wauw  this is “almost” nicer to look at then Jessica lopez in that sexy yellow dress

looks very promising and with such rain on the front window I cant believe the wipers wouldnt work

  • jimmy

  • Aaron Carlisle

Please no, I can’t stand that look.  Leave it for the console players.

  • shum94

    Yes it will for HDR

  • jonneymendoza

    Yea like GT5

  • jimmy

Really nice shots, the first really professional ones from ISI. I was thinking about what I would like to have in future race simulation games (or maybe even in rF2 but I suppose it’s too late to implement such things…):

    1) Realistic sound engine. In real life when you are at circuit during some testing and there is only one car / bike on track you hear it even from the totally opposite side of the circuit… and sound echos from trees and stands etc… This is something I miss a lot in contemporary gMotor2 sims…

    2) Realistic lightning. Night should be pitch black. And when you turn on your headlights in day, you should not see it, sunshine should be much stronger…

    3) Realistic damage / deformations. Not only damage of your car which is visually ridiculous in gMotor2 but also e.g. deformable soft tyre walls. In rF1 there is no such thing, every wall behind run-off zones is rock hard. It’s very unrealistic because in real life you would hit soft tyre wall and eventually you could continue (at least to the pits).

    4) rF2 needs to be liven up. Maybe it’s redundant or it sounds “arcadish” but every detail like track surroundings, realistic spectators etc. gives the game a whole new feeling and sense of immersion. I know that rF is a simulation but most tracks are simply ‘dead’. Take Crammond’s GP series as an example!

  • Vmk

    Exatcly, I coudn’t agree more,

I don’t know why that to play a Sim you have to play with dull tracks and outdated graphics engine. Gmotor 2 games despite look good they’re old and they live up till today because of the wonderful physics. Old don’t mean necessarily bad, but sometimes its time to move on in the graphics department.

I still play GTR 2 and rfactor a LOT, but I won’t keep going on this “I don’t care for graphics, only physcis”, “good graphics are for console arcade drivers” or simila non-sense. Forza 3, GT5 and SHIFT all look better than Gmotor2 games, and there’s nothing wrong with that.. they’re newer games.

Now its up for Simbim and ISI to impress us just like they did in 2005/2006, with top notch visuals that will match our powerful rigs.

If you want a little eyecandy on your game, some would say its “too arcadeish, sim players don’t care for HDR or Bloom”. I read this kind of non-sense all time. Everything is important, physics (being the most), graphics and sound. You’re right, they all Together make the immersion.

  • scca1981

Agree with both of you on your comments.  Graphics ARE important as it all adds to the immerision factor.  Sounds are another very important part.

These two shots are just awesome coming from what rf1 looks like.  I have complete faith in ISI on this one.

Simbin?  Well I dunno.  Their lizard engine is already aged.

  • scca1981

HDR is not a bad thing when done right.  Bloom actually isn’t bad either.  The problem is developers over do it.

  • Filthy Wendy did what to your hamster?

WOwza!    Those look good!   Much better than I expected.

    When can I haz it?

  • Filthy Wendy did what to your hamster?

  • Tolik

Am I the only one who isnt impressed like all others here ???

Sure the effekts on the windows looks nice, hope and think in motion it will looks even better.
But were are the realtime shadows in cpit ??? This is really needed.

  • Vmk

Yeah, but at least the Lizard will feat HDR and Ambient Oclusion! But a nice real time shadows on the cockpit along those two would be perfect.

  • F1Timmeh

Yeah, it was the first thing i noticed too! Lightning is SO important, it changes the game completly. Look at GTA 4, it’s just a GTA 3 style map, but the lightning makes it so much better. Here is a screenshot without lightning from GTA 4

  • Pau

You can’t have lightning without thunder, haven’t thought that all the way through, Timmeh 🙂

  • yokelhama

Since it’s an overcast rainy day you wouldn’t get any sharp contrasting shadows but there should be some more diffuse shadowing if you want to be picky 🙂
