rFactor 2 – Tire Wear & Deformation Preview Videos

Image Space Incorporated has released two brand new preview video, showing off some new tire features of their upcoming rFactor 2 simulation.

The first video shows the tire wear and flatspotting in action, the tire wear has been increased by 100x to show off the effect of a 100 lap run in one single lap.

Also visible are the tire temperature readouts at the top left of the video. The second videos shows the tire deformations as the car goes over the curbs and moves around on the track.

rFactor 2 will introduce various improvements to the modding-friendly simulation including weather, driver animations and a refined graphics engine alongside plenty of current and historic motor racing content.

  • Heimdall Exus

Nice. Not the graphics that I absolutely hate, but the tire is turning up really well.

  • Mike Coleman

This is going to change the definition of “sim”…

  • Znam Neznam

release date cant come soon enough

that flat spotting is so life like….cant wait for CTDP to release F1 mod for rf2 will be epic

not only that the tyres finally feel they are conected to the road, bumps, kerbs, grass

    no more floaty feeling

  • Austin White

wow!! Rf2 will surely be impressive..  I seriously need to start building a rig soon hahah

  • Carbonfibre

I trust ISI to make those innovations that nobody else does. πŸ˜‰

  • Ricoo

I did not watched the video that I am already excited, strange. πŸ™‚

  • Ricoo

Very nice tire wear first vid.

    I like the sounds.

There is a bug in the second vid but I won’t tell wich one. πŸ˜€

  • SBKRacer

I’ll have to break my silence and say “now we are talking business!” Unfortunately the NTM has no flatspotting and looks inferior to this live tire temp is also much needed for the ntm.
tire sound is much more realistic in this video than the ntm has got.

  • noro

ISI can do so much more than those vids showing I suppose.. they developed rf pro for the real F1 team right? So their challenge must be how to include some of the rf pro features to rf2 that still believable, but without requiring us, the pc racers to build a killer rig to play it.

  • Gniewko Ostrowski

I like the first vid, the tyre wear is ok, the second one would look better if only they gave more than 10 polies on the wheel πŸ™‚ … will not say a word about graphics and shaders πŸ™‚

  • Stefan Schuchardt

I see sharp textures, selfshadow, car reflections, overall good graphics and awesome physics! The sound is also nice. This will be great.

  • Hybrid

    That looks really good!

  • Ricoo

There is no soft shadows… but maybe they will add that later.

  • Novum

  • Samuel Korthof

Iracing eat your heart out. This is gonna be the new standard in Simracing.

  • Sigmatc24

    Absolutely stunning πŸ™‚

Tire deformation is so great and the sounds too really good

  • F1Racer

Highly anticipating this coming out, this looks great !

2 things though… when you flat spot on a tyre with most of its tread left, would you still see signs of it once you’ve worn pretty much all the tread off ?  I guess so if you keep running over it and making it worse.
Also it would be nice if you stay on worn tyres too much you run a high risk of a puncture and if you keep running on worn tyres that you can actually get one.

  • Luka Oslakovic

this looks really nice. next step is animated punctured tire

  • Hybrid

Thats already in rFactor 1. To long on worn tires and you get a puncture. πŸ™‚

  • Firestarter

This was a nice surprise, looks good.

  • stabiz

The destroyed tire looks really good.

  • John

Impressive. rFactor 2 appears to be shaping up.

  • Predrag Drobac

I must notice the new tire scrub and skid sounds, which are spot on! At last! No more that annoying hshhhhhhhh sound.
No more sound modding for me in that department, yeey! πŸ™‚

  • Francesco Kasta

    Hell Yeah!

  • SBKRacer

well tell that to iracers πŸ™ the tire sound is so unrealistic and awful! This is definitely the new standard as I pointed out!

  • F1Racer

Can’t say it’s ever happened to me πŸ™‚

  • Hybrid

Hehe to bad i can say i did. πŸ˜€

  • Eddie Jansson

That’s really nice, I wonder what SimBin is going to do with GTR3, personally I prefer Race-series over rFactor. But I’m definitely going to buy this!

  • Predrag Drobac

Yep, tire sounds in iracing are awful as well. πŸ™

I changed tire sounds in GTL to match my taste, check it out, I think they’re spot on.

  • Jorge Araujo

That looks awesome :D. I wasn’t so sure about rFactor 2, but now. Damn that looks good. Not only the tire wear and deformation, superb btw, but the overall handling looks incredible. It’s sold for me. Just waiting for the release now. πŸ™‚

  • Nathan Robinson

Finally something big from the rfactor 2 development team! Now this is progress but it only makes me wish it was even closer to release time. Damn you sim racing and your emotional power struggle.

  • crob ol

rF Pro physics & tyre models are not developed by ISI, instead each Racing Team is using his own models, an that info is confidential.

  • JGoenR

    Looks great!

  • BSR-WiX

IMO you could go on about sound preferences for ever. It seems one of those parts of a mod where everyone has his own personal preference. I always see the word ” Realistic ” pop up.  It strikes me as weird, because there are many different tire noises in the world, in relation to what tire is used. And lets be honest, we all havent heard them all.   Overall i like the sound in the video. ( It sounds almost like the iRaing Skippy )

  • Eduardo Pimentel

  • Flaux

Lol,..I see animated marshalls, a plain, a yellow thing that shakes around, birds, and a green flag. πŸ˜›

Most of it has been seen in previous videos, but the new 1080 video shows it much better. Thank you Tim!

  • Predrag Drobac

The engine sound in above clips is completely the same as in rF 1, only skid sound is new.

  • phil23

Looking good 😎 . Tire wear looks evil, good thing my first priority in setting up my car is normally my brakes!!! πŸ™‚

  • Luke

While rFactor 2 looks pretty good, I think I’ve officially given up on it looking as good as DiRT/SHIFT.

ISI simply doesn’t have enough staff to visually compete with the larger studios and I’ll just have to accept that and move on with my life.

  • Ernie

The tire wear looks really great. Too bad that i’m driving GT cars most of the time, so i can’t “enjoy” watching my worn tires. πŸ˜‰

  • Carbonfibre

Well the only new graphical difference all those people at SMS managed to come up with between Shift 1 and Shift 2 was more colour saturation and new lens bloom effect they were keen to show off on every lap of Suzuka.

ISI said they weren’t making any of those camera effects, so yes, you can forget a lot of that glitter that people tend to define graphics with. However; lighting, shaders, shadows, i.e. the basics, is what rF2 needs. and this WIP is missing ground shaders the most. I’m still confident shaders will make the killer graphical difference when rF2 is finished.

  • frigopie

ISI said they have done ambient occlusion shadows, hdr and bloom, but they will not show it until it is done…

  • Ryan Marc Joseph Callan

Is it just me or did it catch the same flatspot the second time the brakes locked? Like it would likely do IRL?

  • Rantam

I like what i see quite a lot, being dynamic enviromental maps one of the things i hoped rF2 would have. And here they are! So, well done ISI!  πŸ™‚

Ps. I like also the tire deformation and dinamics πŸ˜‰

  • Erik

You don’t got anything more to say? πŸ˜›
    Theeriktakespole/ErikT πŸ˜‰

  • lemming 77

More than that. There appears to be some faulty normal data on the car model, leading to peculiar shading on the car which you can see in the second video. No doubt they know about that aswell, as it’s not the kind of bug that slips past easily, and I’m sure it’ll be rectified before it’s released.

  • Maddmatt

That ambient occlusion should make a big difference in viduals when it’s implemented, so I think we can expect the game to look significantly better when it’s done.

I hope to see some dynamic shadows at night, like what Shift 2 has. Makes night racing look awesome.

  • Ghoults

Yeah, stuff like that is what worries me most with rf2. It is not the features but the physics behind them. Their push to their tiremodel update is very positive news though and I must admit that rf2 looks promising!

All we need is a date now. It’s been coming “in this year” for two years now. It’s getting very iracy already with that tire stuff and soons :p

  • Rolands SvΔ“tiΕ†Ε‘

That’s good, that’s good. But sorry, tyre deformation looks awful. Take a look on LFS’s given tyre deformation system. Driving there really feels like you have rubber on your steel rims. rF2 system just can’t reproduce at least close result to that what it should be like. I am in hope for something with bigger potential.

  • Jux

I think the lfs tire deformation is too extreme.

  • Aaron Carlisle

While LFS tire deformation is nice to look at… The fact is that it’s way over done.  It almost looks as if your sidewalls are made of jello.  Now-a-days, specially made racing tires have a very stiff sidewall, and don’t deform no where near as much as it looks like in LFS.  I’m sorry to tell you this, but your claim is completely invalid.

  • Chris Karsten

have you driven RF2 no so you dont know a thing ..

  • Steve Farrell

Will you be racing or driving just to watch the Tyre Deform?

  • Riches

Anybody ever thought they lowered to tirepressure to show of the deformation.
Otherwise we would hardly see it.

  • Jorge Araujo

I’m looking forward to see my 904 with some dynamic tire action πŸ™‚

    btw, hey guys!

  • Justin ForzaBarΓ§a D’Cruze

I like the look of that……keep the updates coming ISI πŸ˜‰

  • JohnSc

“The first video shows the tire wear and flatspotting in action, the tire wear has been increased by 100x to show off the effect of a 100 lap run in one single lap.”

  • Rolands SvΔ“tiΕ†Ε‘

I am not talking about the tyre wear. It’s okay with that. Mind the tyre deformation. Looks like rubbish animation which simply won’t go in one hand with physics at all.

  • Rolands SvΔ“tiΕ†Ε‘

Well, yes, I agree that LFS’s developers made a little too much out of the tyre deformation. It really should be less seen. But the way how it deforms, feels ands reacts on driving, surface…

  • Riches

The Skippy drives on street tires, they probably deform more than real racing tires.

  • arronski

Release date, yes i want to know when i can buy the game ?

I’m preparing to be called some evil troll …dumb internets

  • Mark

Looking forward to getting this to complement my iRacing addiction. πŸ˜€

  • Raphael Dos Reis Oliveira

    the mirror on second video…ehehehhehehehe

  • SBKRacer

me too iRacing is getting better by the day but if this thing is what it’s looking like to be it’s gonna blow iRacing away!

  • Austin White

I hope current rfactor license holders get a discount for rf2. that would be cool. Hell Ill turn in my rf license key for rf2 if they give me like a super discount.

  • SBKRacer

man feel sorry for you seems like you are so poor you can’t spare 40 dollars for rf2, sorry for you dude!

  • Lennart Lippens

The money I spend for rFactor was probably the best ever in terms of money per minute.
I feel almost ashamed I paid such small amount of money for so much fun through the years.
And you think €35 for 5 years of fun is too much?
I’d say to ISI: make rF2 double the price of rF1! lol

  • Justin ForzaBarΓ§a D’Cruze

Austin give iracing a try, its much cheaper πŸ˜›
