Project CARS – Build 179 Available

Slightly Mad Studios have released the newest build of their WMD-powered Project CARS title, adding a brand new type of track to the simulation.

Slightly Mad Studios have released the newest build of their WMD-powered Project CARS title, adding a brand new type of track to the simulation.

Build 179 comes with California Highway and Azure Coast, two point-to-point country road tracks that add more variety to the title’s choice of tracks.

Both tracks are around 20 kilometers long and offer a challenging, twisty layout in a very scenic setting. Fnas of more traditional race tracks will get their fix with the new build as well as it includes a first version of Suzuka, the legendary Japanese Grand Prix venue.

Oh wow, it’s like someone wrote down a daydream of mine and decided to put it in a gorgeous racing game.

  • Lemming asdfafh

Isn’t this a day early? Ah well, no complaints from me. Downloading. 🙂

    • Anonymous

Nope its Friday here, but yeah an early Friday 🙂

      • Lemming asdfafh

Heh, sweet. And only just noticed, Suzuka is in… This just keeps getting better and better. 😀

      • Anonymous

Yeah, great to see Suzuka make it in !

  • Anonymous

Yikes !  How cool is that ?!!   Those thumbnails looks like real photos too 🙂

20km stretch of California highway? I’m in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1415444469 Van Sanhnikone

exactly what I’ve always wanted, long stretches of road in a simulation game. (now the only thing that would be more awesome is a TDU2 sized open track with P CARS, but of course that is a big ask) .

Also where are they getting all these tracks from ? so sudden, every week is plenty of tracks after plenty more tracks, SMS are spoiling us for sure.

    • Eric Zehnder

There’s a limitation on how big tracks can be. Circuits like the Nordschleife will be in the game but I think that’s about as big as they can get. I asked for the Transfagarasan highway but it stretches too far. I want to say it’s like 16x16km or something.

      • rui silva

Targa Florio ( drewling here ) has 71 km, ish…

  • http://twitter.com/RadicalsOnline Mini Driver

hmmm, When I go to the download link, it shows me version 164, not 175. Sure this dload is for team members?

    • Anonymous

179 is there alrright.   You are in the forum and have clicked on the Downloads button at the top right?  Is so, try clearing out your cache and your cookies for wmdportal.com, then refresh.

    • Anonymous

164 is the last Junior build, are you sure you have Team Member status?

Have you been able to download 174?

      • http://twitter.com/RadicalsOnline Mini Driver

yeah, I went here from your link in the article:
http://forum.wmdportal.com/downloads.php and it shows 164 sadly.

      • http://twitter.com/RadicalsOnline Mini Driver

AAAAh, I found the issue. When you go to the page that shows types of membership, it says on the right side of the cheapest membership “team member” so I assumed that’s what got the download. It’s misleading! Check it out here:
http://forum.wmdportal.com/toolpacks.php Where it says team member on the left, it categories that as full member on the right.

  • Anonymous

Tracks are awesome, but FFB and phisics
do not give the pleasure of driving on the tracks and graphics not impress.

I hope that in full version of the game will be all right, or even very good.

    • Ricoo

FFB needs special tweeking but if done, good results can be reached.

  • Anonymous

Good news, the only problem is that if they keep on adding at this speed my download won’t be ready by the time the newer build is out!
One more thing: WE WANT RALLY!!!

    • Big Ron

Rally is canceled for the boxed version. At the moment it is discussed if it will be a DLC or a seperated game and the direction goes to a seperated game. So you will barely see rally in pCARS.

      • Eric Zehnder

Yeah, a bit sad but their feeling is that if they do a half-assed job people won’t buy it and they’ll be panned. They feel that a separate rally IP will be worth it in the end. I think they’re right since I don’t believe there are any rally sims in development. Seems like everyone’s focused on track stuff right now.

      • Anonymous

If they make it as separate game and it’s simulation and good quality it would be the first one since RBR. That would be great news!

  • Anonymous

Who will be the first to make a Suzuka comparison vid? Love that track!

  • Anonymous

My jaw = on the floor.

  • Anonymous

Having the people who will be playing this game help develope it is working out really well. I think this might turn the industry on it’s head. No more big corporate bean counters feeding us crapola.

  • http://www.devotid.com/ devotid

wow……. stunning visuals. They have def got that department handled.

The two new long tracks are fantastic !
This game is getting better and better !

  • Ricoo

    Photo-realistic. It’s that good. 🙂

  • Anonymous

The new tracks are splendid. I was lucky enough to live on a street right off Highway 1 near Sausalito and I would go every Sunday morning riding my motorcycle with the “Sunday Morning Ride”.

This track is not a copy of that one, but there are very similar stretches and it’s very well done. I never thought I would enjoy driving the open road this much. The cars also drive better this week. FFB has improved and frankly I no longer see the difference between what we call “Sims” and pCARS. It is a sim with Sim like driving. At the very least it’s as much as sim as Race 07, GTR2 and rFactor. Is it at NKpro levels in terms of FFB? Not quite. Handling? Almost there.

I also had fun driving Suzuka. Without the Grandstand and much of the trackside elements it was hard to get oriented at first. Part of the problem was also that I don’t think the elevations are quite right. The radius pf the turns may be wrong as well, but I can’t say that until I drive it a bit more. But in the 3 laps I did I remember thinking that elevation (as compared to the laser scanned track in iRacing) needed an adjustment.

    • tgn motorsports

       http://youtu.be/hjKzCsLXzuE

ive race Road American in the sims you mention above, plus turned hundred’s of laps on Road America in iracing using star mazda, indy car, lotus and others, these cars actually feel better to me. I will admit it takes awhile to get my wheel set correct the get set up dialed in but once that is over the cars I like are  a blast. I put the above link ‘s lap at road america to a real alms broadcast of a run through. enjoy  🙂

if you check it out ..ty.

      • Anonymous

Love the commentary that goes with the vid! Well done!

  • Anonymous

Upgraded to team member status, because the upgrades and new tracks are coming so FAST, physics and FFB is also getting a lot better, [my new favourite racer] graphics are the best and now getting good FPS to boot !

  • Anonymous

The new road tracks are awesome. on the Azure Coast there is a jump you get so much air the car breaks apart on landing. Really Cool. The scenery is so great that you don’t know if you want to drive or sightsee but the cars physics make it a do able challange at extreme speed.

    • Anonymous

I did the California Highway track in the Azano LM and I dunno if I took a wrong road but I suddenly hit an invisible wall even though there was road ahead.   I frightened the life out of me and my heart nearly stopped.
      Bricks at least, please !!

      • Anonymous

Yes it has been mentioned and I posted some picks for barricade styles. As far as I have seen the tracks are released to us unfinished as to spot bugs or issues on the way to their completion I bet there will be something by next fridays build.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kris.baxter2 Kris Baxter

I had it happen too, destroyed my Caterham and gave me a hell of a fright in the process. Remembered next time round though.

  • Guilherme Cramer

When will SMS stop making these game builds available to members? All the way up through the game going gold? A month before release? Will they deactivate pre-release builds once it’s out?

    • Guilherme Cramer

Or will it provide updated physics/gameplay content up through release, except for the game modes?

    • Eric Zehnder

I’m a Full Member right now and I believe the idea is to provide access at least as far as first Gold release. As far as post-release DLC testing I don’t think that’s been decided yet. Additionally, there will probably be a Rally game in the same vein as pCARS (pRally?) using the same method.

Join up and check out the new coastal roads – they’re awesome!!

      • Guilherme Cramer

Thank you for your reply :).

  • Nathan Robinson

i’ve only had limited time with this new build and wow, the ffb is really coming around. If there is anyone out there that wont try this because they think its like shift, you are only hurting yourself. It seems like we had a few dull weeks but lately its been exciting stuff and it keeps surprising. By far my favorite title to drive right now and its not even a finished product 😛

    • Anonymous

Same here. The only problem is its lack of multiplayer. The moment they open that up, I will only drive the other sims (the ones currently out) on my league nights and for practice. Otherwise, for fun I am going to be on pCARS until rF2 releases something decent and GTR2 and/or Assetto Corsa come out. After that, we’ll see.

  • Anonymous

With the exception of rF2 (even in Beta form) it’s getting tough to enjoy driving other sims as much as I once did. A lot of people claim “you don’t look at the graphics when you’re driving”, but in this sim I can’t help it! If feels good to me in current form and gets better in that regard as time goes. No doubt the end result will be exceptional.

I will say, I would still enjoy iRacing too but had to switch back to a plug and play monitor after my LCD bombed on me. With AC and GTR3 on the horizon I mean really-what more could we ask for? I’ll drive em all!

    • Anonymous

“With AC and GTR3 on the horizon I mean really-what more could we ask for? I’ll drive em all!”

      Well said, my idea exactly

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PCAIL6DO2OCM3H24SRQJW6ISZM J

Just ran the Azure and California point to points..what a blast!  I’ve always loved these kind of open road tracks. So much better than what TDU2, NFS The Run and Forza’s Fujima Kaido offer in my opinion.

  • http://twitter.com/Polyphonie Mike

The California and Azure road tracks are begging for some cool 60s’ convertible or the very least a Ferrari Daytona.

  • Guilherme Cramer

So you can only run pCARS if you’re connected to the internet? Absolutely no offline?

    • Nathan Robinson

for now because its a testing period and this allows them to confirm your identity. u need the internet to get the new builds so i dont see what the problem is. the final product will be different.

      • Guilherme Cramer

The problem is having to always be connected to the internet

      • Big Ron

It´s a copy protection which clarifies that only registrated and paying user can play the build. I see no problem there because do not even need a fast internet connection.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jcruze88 Justin ForzaBarça Cruze

After trying California Highway, I suspect I’ll be somewhat disappointed with the scenery on my next weekend drive.

  • Anonymous

How are the physics compared to another arcade sim, mainly F1 2011? Thanks!

    • http://www.facebook.com/kris.baxter2 Kris Baxter

I think they are much better than F1 2011, the FF is a lot better for a start, and the cars are harder to drive, I find F1 2011 too easy to control in comparison, and lacking in feel and ambience. Though I do find low speed physics odd, but that seems to be an issue that plague all sims.

      • Anonymous

        Thanks!

    • Big Ron

Arcade sim? I smell some sarcasm and jibe here!

      • Anonymous

No sarcasm, just asking a question 🙂

    • Anonymous

If you don’t know the answer then how can you already judge pCARS to be an arcade sim ?   And what is an arcade sim ??

      • Anonymous

From what the company has made lately, I thought they made semi-realistic racing games and not full sims. Something like F1 2011, which is made for the masses, but still offers setup choices, but no one would say is totally realistic. I’m not judging, just asking a question and attempting to avoid flame wars like we see in the F1 2012 posts. No malice was intended in my post, just was asking a question 🙂

      • Anonymous

Physics/FFB is work-in-progress, with the goal to be the most realistic. It’s coming along really well IMO, not perfect yet but getting closer and closer every month.

      • Anonymous

Well, Ian Bell was lead on GTR 1-2 and GT Legends. I would say they’re capable of sim.

      • Anonymous

SMS made, what you call semi-realistic racing games, whilst under the umbrella of EA who wanted it that way.
SMS are not tied down now and pCARS is the result.

      • Anonymous

Awesome, thanks! Thats just the type of info I was looking for 🙂

      • Anonymous

StuartBecktell try it, where else could you have so much content for so little!  Just be sure  your PC can manage the requirements…. which is not much differrent than rF2 requires!

      • Anonymous

Just bought team member access and will put a few laps in later today 🙂 I know they made GTR and the like…but I wasn’t sure if they were continuing the Shift 2 series or not, which I believe is a lot of people’s issue too. Its not that we forget…but its whether they are making a change in actual development and not just saying it. Remember, Shift was marketed as a sim, which confuses people.

      • Anonymous

Awesome Stu… I’m sure you’ll like it and upgrade to full member ASAP… before membership closes.  Also, I did not mean you specifically forgot as much as so many refer to it.  This is not an EA devloped Game and will not follow Shift

      • Anonymous

Again SMS were involved with GTR/GTR2 and GTL prior to developing Shift which BTW I really like!  No Shift is not GTR2/rFactor (though rfactor feels like crap w/o Real Feel) but it was a fun game!

      • Anonymous

Thank you. I was wondering the same thing. Nothing against the posters wondering about the “Simnees” or “Arcadeness” of pCARS, but I am trying to figure out how pCARS got the rap of being an arcade game. Is it its Shift2 roots? Some of the arcadish aspects such as the start semaphore (and relative game controlled start?).

To me pCARS by and large drives similarly to GTR2, Race 07, rFactor and that breed of sims. I honestly cannot find that much of a difference and if someone gave me a magic blindfold that prevented me from seeing the game’s graphics I would not be able to say “This is arcade, this is not” if I were testing the gmotor2 breed of sims, iRacing, NKpro and pCARS.

Of course, they would feel different and the FFB in pCARS is still a WIP, but I don;t see things like the annoying handling in Dirt 3 where no matter the surface cars all drive the same and when I watch the replays my awkward slides become beautiful 4 wheel drifts and powerslides.

I think pCARS will turn out to be a very competent simulator. It may have some Arcade features left over but I hope that as a community we will be able to steer development toward making those features up to the user to activate or not.

Like in economics, politics and religion, if you tell a lie long enough and with enough conviction it becomes truth for a great many people. Maybe that’s what’s at work here. Enough people call it “arcade” that eventually the community will be convinced it is an arcade driving simulator.

Incidentally, someone mentioned low speed physics (not as proof of pCARS being arcade) and I remember reading or listening to an interview about low speed physics in simulators that explained quite well why there is this disconnect between the way a car drives at high speed Vs. low speed. Indeed there is a threshold where a different physics engine needs to kick in or the high speed engine cannot handle low speed physics. That’s a fact. Why? I have to find the interview and I’ll link it.

      • Anonymous

For me it was the Shift 2 roots. That is why I asked the question, and everyone jumps on me! I wanted to see where it was and it seems this was forgotten in the disgust in making an assumption that was incorrect.

      • Anonymous

That’s a Sad but frequently used Point… people wanna forget SMS Roots are from GTR/GTR2 and GTL. EA directed Shift… Ian and others even tried listening on NoGrip forum to get some feedback on the two patches released….!

IMHO; these guys really want to provide a game the community wants.

    • Guilherme Cramer

According to the website it will be above that, that is called an Action Racing game. CARS is supposed to be a mix of GT5/Forza 4 with iRacing/GTR 2.

      • Anonymous

Okay, so just so everyone knows, thats what I call an arcade sim 🙂 Its what I prefer since I don’t have the time for games like iRacing anymore.

  • Anonymous

Everyone eats initially with their eyes, secondary with their taste/feel. I’m afraid this might be pCars year after all.

As a certified hobby cook the flavor is pungently bittersweet.

  • Guilherme Cramer

I just joined this and I have been reading Ben Collins’ posts instead of downloading it. I’m a fan of the guy and hope he makes this be what we dream of.

  • tgn motorsports

    http://youtu.be/MUBHPyS_pnM
Above is video of one of the 2 new country road tracks. there highly detailed.

not sure why my earlier comment not showing up or was removed but will try again.
as far as comparing this to f1 2011.. f1 2011 is a finished game this is a pre aplha.
The cars all feel different… I guess you can put on aids to make it more arcade.

  • Matt Orr

Well, after the news about them cutting off sign ups and the open road courses in this build, hopped in to it. Call me impressed, the Ariel and Caterham actually drive convincingly to me. They actually feel FAST, rather than what lightweight cars in most other games / sims always inevitably feel like – slow cars. Even going back to GTL, the Elan always felt slow despite the fact it was actually quite fast.

TBH, I found them harder to drive than the cars in GTR2 ever were.

Still have more hope for AC though, but if they were to end up doing more open roads – we could have something unique.

    • Matt Orr

Also want to say I think it has gotten a bad rep for being arcade because it’s sooo easy to feel the tires it makes it very hard to screw up. While you can feel the car take a set in iRacing and rF2, it’s much more pronounced when you are right at the peak grip level in pCars.

      • Anonymous

        Thanks Matt
for coming on here and posting an Honest Comment! Many folks here would rather
bash a developer for trying something new vs. joining them and participating.
Even if they disliked their previous games..!

        SMS is
trying to involve the community. They’re even offering a person an affordable opportunity
to play monthly builds and post their comments for a merger 10 Euro (13.25 US)
less than a fast food pizza.

        SMS with
pCARS are working hard at developing the best game they can, within their
capabilities while listening to and implementing constructive feedback. No not
bashing negative troll type feedback (which is what gets blasted all over other
sites) but good detailed constructive feedback… much like you would be
required to do at work if working with a team of designers!

        I’ve been in
since Day 1 (actually two Senior Memberships) and I can say the game has
progressed incredible fast and SMS have listened to the members even the Junior
Members. Quick example to how they listen… I had a uunique problem due to my
satellite connection… always getting an error for three consecutive
builds…. SMS listened and corrected my error which at the time, seemed as I
        was alone with the issue.

        I feel the final
game/product will deliver what we all would expect in a Race Sim and the game
is still in Alpha Phase of development.

  • Dan Blamey

The Gumpert feels absolutely amazing now.  Had a blast along California Highway with it.

  • http://twitter.com/jm_molinav juan manuel

is therey any chance to add a.i. traffic to the point to point tracks? like tnfs (the first one).

    • Lazers Hockey

I was thinking the very same thing, that would be fantastic

    • Eric Zehnder

I would like this as well but I have a feeling people will yell “Arcade!” if it’s included. I think it’d add a good amount of immersion to have little Fiats and Peugeots puttering along at the speed limit on Azure Coast to weave your way through.

If the idea is to feel like you’re really driving the car on those roads than why not make them realistic by adding the things that would really be there? Namely regular cars driving normally and perhaps a few pedestrians here and there. The pedestrians would probably have to exist beyond barriers (like spectators at any regular circuit). You wouldn’t want to turn it into Grand Theft Auto.

      • http://twitter.com/jm_molinav juan manuel

I agree, to runover people we have GTA. Pedestrians are not needed imo, but if they can add some sprites by the side of the road is ok.

If project cars has the balls to create a point to point track I think add some random a.i. cars through the course would be a good decision. If they do in a correct way will be just part of a sim (i mean, if they add traffic must be something serious, trying to recreate a real highway ambient). It’s easy to screw this (add some police cars, lot of exciting explosions, helicopters and points for take a good turn and you have another arcade game).

I just can’t imagine how much fun can be to drive a sports cars on a civilian road without the risk of the real life, of course inside a good physics engine.
