Need for Speed Shift 2 – Massive Preview Batch

Need for Speed Shift 2 – Massive Preview Batch

EA has released a hundred new preview shots of Slightly Mad Studios’ upcoming Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed title, revealing plenty of new cars that will be included in the massive racing title.

Included in this batch are both FIA GT1 & GT3 race cars as well as street cars from BMW and Ford. Much like the first Shift, the new title allows players to turn road going machinery into race cars, the previews show cars with various bodykits and cockpit modifications.

Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed will include the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship & GT3 European Championship among lots of other racing content, new features include a new helmet camera, night racing and more realistic physics. The second Shift title will be available for the PC, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 in late March.

wow, gt5 will eat shift 2’s dust if sms nails the car handling this time lol

  • gniewko

would like to see the PC AAliased shots, console always looks crappy.

  • Torsi

I hope the handling is not like the first shift where it drove like when you lift off the throttle of the gas the car would brake automaticly. Thats was really really bad.

  • lans

unlikely, maybe it will be more entertaining for a week at best, kinda like hot pursuit

  • Kramer

    keep dreaming lans.

  • Kramer

those are crappy?  are you mad? πŸ™‚
with PC as an option i dont think they would be taking console shots for marketing.

these are gorgeous and that they are untouched shots is even more mouth watering!

  • lans

i saw their bmw z4 footage and it looked nothing like these pictures even in 720p, gt5 looks super good even on 240p footage, to me that is a bad sign

the miami footage actually looked quite pants, everything looked very yellow blurry and lacks visual fidelity. i won’t be suprised if this game has some resoultion,( jaggies) issues

the z4 was going over curbs and the car was hardly being affected even the track was  mostly glacially flat, with token bumps sprinkled around the track for added realism.

i can show random online videos that shows the difference in suspension in gt5 that makes the car look connected to the track and is interacting with the track, shift 2’s bmw looks like the car is not moving but the world is moving .

The FIA GT cars are sexy

  • yeahwhatever

gt1, gt2 and gt3 cars look fucking great and the bmw m3 “dtm” concept is pretty interesting also. It looks like the rest are there to add to the car count

  • Uff

    lol
    “Here we troll again”. xD

  • Ross Siggers

    that MadCroc vette’… *jizz*

  • Hompe

    Bmw m3 E30 πŸ˜€

  • Nestor Martin

What do you think, if I want to throw money out the window, shall I buy Shift2 or Dirt3 this year?
    πŸ˜€

  • lans

Dirt 3!!! its so awesome it gives me goose bumbs, dirt 3 ftw OMGWTFBBQSAUCE FTW!
i luv ken block he’s so cool and ARRRticulate, and rally is so pimpin, can’t wait to try that game out!!

  • roger

awesome, yes … They have improved the level of detail for the 3d models, but moreover the texture size seems to have been increased a lot. Especially the details on this car are really impressive. I really hope my G25 will “feel right” with Shift 2, if so this game will be a lot of fun!

  • Ho Lee Fuk

lans, your hate for Shift 2 because it competes with your beloved GT5 explains your biased comment with Im sure you dont even believe in what you wrote.

Nestor, if you have money to throw, get both.

  • Ho Lee Fuk

hehe lans.  a video isnt going to show you whats going in with the physics engine.  it will show a graphical respresntation but you have no idea of the amount of calcuoations each has regardless of how kewl you think it looks on a video.
you just dont want to like Shift 2 but why try to put others off it?    your last bit about the car not moving shows the level we are dealing with here.  you see what you wanna see and then out spouts the nonsense.

  • Ho Lee Fuk

yep, Shift 2 is almost on par in-game with what GT5 offers only in photo mode.  Bring it on!  (not you lans, I mean the game).

  • Nabil Abdool

    add to shopping cart! πŸ˜€

  • M1ST4K3

Well… speaking of jaggie issues… And shadows issues…

    GT5. Enough said…

  • Alexey Underwood

    +1,000,000

  • M1ST4K3

LOL… lans… you got so impressesd by 2 seconds of driving footage that you feel the need to come by and tell everyone “Oh, no…. That was wrong!! See why? Don’t buy!?”… Only Because you know Polyphony Digital has made 5 great collection games, which 4 of hem were completely arcade… The last one tries to sim, but it just doesn’t completely feel that way… Now, SMS? GTR2, GTL… Ring any bells? πŸ˜‰

I bet theese guys could make something… They could really nail the handling IF they want and/or EA wants… Now, with GT5 out with everybody saying “WOW! So real!? :|” (yeah… right…) All they have to do is make Shift 2 better and have everybody saying… “WOW! Shift 2 drivers use GT5 as toilet paper… true story!”

  • Nestor Martin

    I don’t :'(

  • M1ST4K3

IMO, Dirt 3 will be closer to Dirt 2 than Shift 2 to Shift 1…

CM got a good arcade game in Dirt 2… Everyone being able to drive the rally cars, the handling felt good… etc…

Now, if SMS would ship Shift 2 with that handling for Shift 1…. it would be their death! So they have to change a lot!!

Oh, Dirt 3 is getting weather changes and gymkhana (or how the hell this wirtes up)…

I’m with Ho Lee, anyway… IF you have the money, get both, IF you only have money for one… pick your favourite genre, i.e. Rally vs GT

  • M1ST4K3

    *that handling from Shift 1

  • Tuppe

Sweet collection of BMWs! Problem with driving games is that they lack BMWs, but this has e30, Z4, e64, e92(ugly tuning, I hope there is original one also), e46 and EVEN e36 which isn’t in any game!

OH, I really hope they’ll rip those cars to a better game, like LFS or rFactor mod.

  • Tribolik

Well that just goes to show that every one has a different taste- I love DTM cars and that BMW is the car I enjoyed seeing the most. But Im sure that like in Shift one there will be 2 or 3 diferent body works to fit on the cars

  • Mark

some lovely shots for sure, something odd about the proportions of the E36 and E46 tho strangely, willing to bet the same guy did the Escort WRC model as well, another which look strange compared to many of the others, overall a pant dribbling collection of BM’s tho, I am not biased, honest  πŸ™‚ , even tho I am a total BMW nut πŸ™‚

  • Mark

input delay = no sale here btw Ian, make sure the boys get it sorted this time so I can buy you all a coffee so to speak πŸ™‚

  • jParry

The cars modeling, interiors and ambient illumination looks exactly like SHIFT 1…oh boy, i’m not so sure about the ‘simulator’ physics what they promissed

  • The Biff

Don’t you guys get tired of repeating yourselfs?  Most of you sound like a broken record when talking about Shift 2.

  • Tensor

the textures seems to be sharper than in Shift 1, and the cars show more details as well. But even if you are right, i wonder how you judge the physics by screenshots.
But i have to admit that i am not so convinced that the “elite” physics will be as elite as they want you to believe.

  • Tensor

Right, but one comment is still missing, so i put it in to make the comments to this news to perfect ones for Shift 2:

    GPL looks so much better.

  • lans

rather have low resoultution shadows than low resoulution everything!

  • Tensor

And for all the other 21st Century haters in here (simulation hardcore wannabes):

This is graphics in 2011, ISI. The last drying video of rFactor 2 just looks like a bad joke from past centuries to me, compared to this.

  • lans

the same logic applies to you, not everyone understands the concept called “quality”

  • gniewko

these are from console…i am a graphic designer and can tell. Don’t you see the pixelated edges? This is what I am talking about.

  • The Biff

    LOL.  I don’t think so.

  • Tensor

    [/sarcasm]

  • zumlee
  • The Biff

Now I get it. πŸ˜‰   sarcasm detector a little off this morning.  lol.

  • skazz

I find it interesting how different the quality is of these shots. I’m hoping half are console (the low res ones) and the other half are PC in-game quality (high res). Alternatively, the high res shots could be “photo mode”… we’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m personally only going to buy Shift 2 if the input lag is removed and if the stupid shaking replay cameras are gone. Those points killed Shift 1 for me.

After the graphical delights of GT5, a small step down is acceptable, but I’m in the camp of “rFactor 2 videos and shots so far look very antiquated”… Here’s hoping they can bring that side up to scratch before release.

  • wayne reed

I don’t know if its just me but it just like they have copied every car mod for Rfactor. I have shift 1 and the handling is just poo it is no where near a sim. By what I have seen fron this it will be more of the same. no sale for me I will hold out and get RFactor 2 and GTR3

  • dave

The graphics are very good , sgree with you there
however ISI are approaching from the opposite end of the game to SMS
in that the physics are all important to them and graphics a secondary imo
Yes i would like some of shift graphical features in rFactor 2 but I would also
say that i would like some of rFactors physics (based on the last release of both games)
    features in Shift2
Choosing 1 over the other would give only an indication of which was more important
to you as a player without necessarily providing proof as to how good or bad either of the games are.

  • Pe11e

Shaders and ambient lighting are A+ for sure. Default NFSS2 will maybe be good, and if it’s dissapointing, I will wait for overhaul mods, new physics, etc. Then we will talk. πŸ˜‰

  • dave

Another point regarding the graphics is if you look at the inside of the cockpit looking out in the miami video compared to previous shots from the same position in rfactor2 , i would agrue that the rfactor 2 shots look far more like rl
heres the shot im referring to
    https://www.virtualr.net/wp-content/gallery/2557/nissanrf2rain.jpg
now i guess little hard for Shift to have a shot like this as they have no weather effects unless you consider the various times of day they have picked to be actual weather effects.

  • ISI fanboy slim panatella la dee dah

    looks beaut.   Lovely cars.

Still, fact remains I am still far, far more interested in rF2.

I’ll buy rF2 without a moment’s hesitation, fully confident I’ll get what I’m after in a driving sim.   I will surely never buy Shift2.

We can wish rF and iRacing looked more like this, but it ain’t going to happen.   It can’t be done, as much as you might wish otherwise.

  • Nismo

Graphically the finest graphiocs i have seen in any car sim/ game bar none. Regarding physics well i will be happy with believable physics as i have iRacing for the simulation experience. But these graphics with believable physics sounds a great match to me personally

  • F1Racer

skazz, in Shift 2, the photo-mode does nothing to enhance the shots.  Basically because it doesn’t need to.  What you see is what you get, no gimmicks.

  • Grave

I think the SMS guys are fully capable of making a “GTR 3” with these kind of graphics so why cant ISI? If SMS can shake off EA they will make a proper sim with modern graphics in the future.

  • falken

This looks promising, especially alongside the screenshots of the Forza style telemetry mode. I know alot of people dislike Forza, but I’d say the physics are very good in that, except for the hand-holding opposite lock, which I believe should have been able to be turned off when using a wheel.

I do play rF, GTR Evo and LFS btw.

  • Tom

    Wow, impressive collection, can’t wait…

hopefully input lag is gone and the netcode is better than in Shift1

  • Nismo

I think if SHIFT2 does aswell as the first in terms of reviews and sales. I’m not talking about us simheads that pick at everything but lets be honest SHIFT was a sucess whatever people in the sim community think of it. I think if this does aswell then maybe it’s something they could do and branch offf and make their own. From various interviews it seems SHIFT is a long tem series and i think slowly people outside of sims are coming round to the full sim experience so whats to say what could be done in the future

  • F575

I didn’t get the first game; but chances are i’ll pick up this one purely for the GT1/GT3 cars – they look fantastic; hopefully it can be modded to make it closer to the real series if certain series-specific things are missing (hour long races, qualification race etc)

  • Ogre

The best looking car ever IMHO. Sadly, I only own a 318i, but I always look back in the parking lot, to see its beauty.

  • Ho Lee Fuk

    Youve made 2+2=5 there.

  • thegamer23

impressive pics , but i want to see some damage now.

  • Carbonfibre

Oh shit son! I hate modern 2011 graphics!

I dunno about you, but when I look outside my window, the white frames don’t have glowing halos and fuzzy edges, and the trees in the distance aren’t a smudged blur.

This isn’t exactly what I call progress. It’s more like showing off the new functions on my digital camera before I go back to taking good professional photographs and stop being stupid.

  • Tuppe

I just prefer average cars that regular consumers can buy. They feel natural to handle without sequential gearboxes or stiff suspension or overhigh performance engine, normal interior etc.
I prefer BMWs(well, excluding in racing) 95% stock, über tuning will never make BMW look better than original.
But it’s understandable when they modify them for racing.

  • Lrz

Honestly it doesnt look that different the NFS1 IMHO.  Hmmmm

  • Sensekhmet

Some of these outside shots seem to show comically terrible rollcages… like a 10-year old made them on Google 3D (or whatever this programwas/is called) and didn’t know what is their purpose.

  • Kramer

hehe, good one.  got any more like that?

  • lans

dis game looks like warm ass.
    for real realz, my homies

  • jimmy

rF2 just needs good post effects.

  • ISI fanboy slim panatella la dee dah

Why can’t ISI?   Maybe Shift will in future?   Well……point is it isn’t possible at the moment.  Sure, some people with £500 gfx cards and £500 i7s might be better able to do it, but that really isn’t the market profile.

If you look at Physx demos, or, say, 3DMax physics solutions, there is a hell of a lot of processing going on to do physics.  Add in a large field of cars, shadows all the rest of it…..I just don’t think it is possible atm.

We should view the gfx as an aspect, which can be maximised largely only at the expense of compromising other aspects – usually physics.

I mean, look at FlightSimX versus Tom Clancey’s plane thing?    Or Ama2 versus BF2?   It’s quite easy to swamp even relatively powerful machines far better than those of the average gamer.

I just can’t see how any game can offer hi fidelity physics and cutting edge gfx.  We just don’t have the ooomph.
