Live for Speed – Version 0.6J Released

A few days ago, the Live for Speed development team released a new version of their long-running simulation.

A few days ago, the Live for Speed development team released a new version of their long-running simulation.

Before anybody gets excited, no, the new version again does not include the VW Scirocco, the new tire model or the laser-scanned Rockingham Speedway that were announced more than six years ago.

Instead, the new version brings plenty of other fixes, including:

Changes from 0.6H to 0.6J :

Optimisations :

Static vertex buffers reorganised to reduce DirectX instructions
Frames buffered (default 1) to allow next frame to start rendering
More efficient car distance sorting system for sound and graphics
Dynamic vertex buffers now set to use hardware vertex processing
Better frame rate in places where many objects may be visible

Graphics :

Sky texture is now drawn in mirrors
Layout editor object selection buttons are sorted by distance
Z-buffer depth setting can now be changed without restarting LFS
Mirror now uses 24 bit Z buffer if Z buffer setting is more than 16

Frame rate limitation system :

Frame rate limitation system is now accurate and has better values
New frame info display shows sleep / physics updates / gpu waiting
Now using an event query instead of a lock for input lag prevention
Minimum sleep setting changed to “Sleep every frame” (yes / no)

Misc :

Now using Direct3D 9Ex if available (Windows Vista and later)
Reduced glitch when autocross objects are optimised (e.g. on load)
Reduced min / max values for “Sound lag” setting – default now 0.08
New Audio Option “Sound when window is inactive” (off / on)

3D view modes :

Added a 3D level slider option to adjust monitor-based 3D views
Reduced CPU / GPU usage by sharing scene preparation for both eyes

Oculus Rift :

Now using Oculus SDK version 0.6.0.1 which includes timewarp
You can now enter and leave Rift mode without restarting LFS
Smooth display (if you do not use SLI or force vertical sync)
Monitor window view options : blank / one eye / two eyes

Oculus Rift compatibility mode :

For users who cannot use the Oculus 0.6 runtime, you can still use
the 0.5 runtime. Simply rename the ORDIRECT.dll to some other name
and LFS will then use LFSORDLL.dll instead (extended mode only).

Fixes :

Some buildings at Westhill track were drawn using a slow method
Mouse clipped to window (CTRL+C) now works properly with ALT+TAB
Using mouse wheel to change gear did not work properly at high fps
Layout editor object selection buttons used interface button slots
Crash changing texture resolution with two or more objects selected
Anisotropic filtering did not work on car textures (including skin)

The new version is either available via AutoUpdater for those using version 0.5V or later. Alternatively, a full version download is available below:

“Before anybody gets excited, no, the new version again does not include the VW Scirocco, the new tire model or the laser-scanned Rockingham Speedway that were announced more than six years ago.”

    😀 I doubt it ever will…

I am sure it will one day. It will be billed “Vintage Scirocco” from the days cars still had wheels and did not fly autonomously.

hehehe.. 6 years… man… Im getting really old and this game…

I can say some others trickle out content at a less than competitive pace but LFS team are close to the top in this area. I think they are very talented have good software but bad retail business skills. They may even consider updating their software to todays graphical and physics standards and license their game engine out or figure out a way to employ the needed people it will take to be competitive in the retail gaming markets. Not a bash but more an eye opener. Get it together guys!

Quote Rapidrefund “They may even consider updating their software to todays graphical and physics standards”

Uhmm, I’m really not trying to bash but not sure if you are kidding! LFS is considered by many real life racers (including myself) as the king of driving sims as it has one of the best (if not the very best) tyre physics around! Not sure how you want it updated or to which other game’s standards..

      • RapidRefund

The main stream racing gamer will see this title as outdated with an outdated core. People seem to want the bling factor also I am sure the tire lacks some of the characteristics of todays TM’s that some other titles have even if it is a real good oldschool TM. I believe other titles could be developed from this game engine licenses but the picky communities will give it a tough time to succeed. Just look at the other comments here to see what I mean.

      • stef4o23

Uhmm, can you give me an example of a game that has a better tyre physics model?

LFS was way ahead of its time – I’m sure that even in 5 years from now modern AAA “bling” titles will have a hard time keeping up with its physics model!

      • RapidRefund

rF2 has a better tire model Assetto Corsa has a better tire model pCARS while their tire should still be being worked on is a better tire model and others. I like the LFS tire but I am sure it’s more last generation tech

      • MC

When was it ahead of its time (genuine question?). Don’t forget nKPro came out in 2006 and netKar (namie) before then was pretty good; you can still feel the essence of what it turned into.

LFS was left behind by the competition a long time ago…

      • MC

This is the tyre model that couldn’t get a Scirocco to handle realistically, and led to the stall in development?

When I first tried LFS (back in ’07) in looked dated even then, and the best explanation I got of all the love for LFS is “yeah well it was good when it came out”.

I don’t want to sound mean, I like independent developers and support them, but if anyone else had carried on like Scawen & co. have for the last few years they would have been laughed off the scene ages ago.

The best they can do is release some more content, S3 with Rockingham and yes the f**king Scirocco 😀 (although iirc that was meant to be S1). If it doesn’t handle realistically then nothing else does in the game, and it doesn’t really matter…

      • Silvio

Realistic handling and realistic behavior are two different thing. You can emule realist handling without realistic behavior (pcars). LFS goes after realistic behavior, where realistic handling is just a result.

        ………………………what?

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

        eh ?

      • Silvio

        ?? 🙂

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Sorry, I just could make no sense of your post. I don’t know how it is that you can separate car handling and car behaviour. They seem one in the same to me.

MC edit your post or I`ll remove it. The rules are clear on bad language :
        Please read rule 5b.

      • MC

        Better?

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

        Much. Thanks.

    • ̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩

The thing is, they are programmers / developers. They have some people handling all the business end stuff. I totally agree though on allowing others to help contribute with its development. Rome wasn’t built in a day and certainly took more than 2 people. lol

  • Cyborg

Wait, this is the 2nd update patch in the same year. These guys are really going for it now! Sure theyre getting left behind but you gotta admire their persistence.

  • SKID

OMG, 6 years are gone and no Scirocco?!
    Live for Waiting Speed

    • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

They might be waiting a while so they can bring us a 2nd hand used Scirocco with low mileage and one careful owner.

      • ̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩

I think the scirocco concept was halted for a few reasons. It’s been a while though and no news on it so it’s safe to assume it’s not gonna happen. 🙁

  • ̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩̩

Lol, text really doesn’t do it justice. Videos definitely do.
