iRacing.com – Dynamic Tracks Preview Video

iRacing.com has released a preview video showing off a major new addition to their online racing simulation: Dynamic tracks.

iRacing.com has released a preview video showing off a major new addition to their online racing simulation: Dynamic tracks.

The upcoming dynamic track feature will bring physics-based track changes allowing for tracks to rubber in, react to temperature changes and plenty of more as shown in the video below.

The feature will also help set the foundation for more advanced features that are on the horizon, such as dynamic day & night changes, weather and other aspects that may affect track conditions.

  • Ash McConnell

    That’s cool ๐Ÿ™‚ …off I go to implement marbles ๐Ÿ˜›

  • DogonAtheist

Well that was more than i thought it would be.

  • Lukas Macedo

    Very promising. We will see.

  • QUF

Nice, I like. This is evolution in sim racing games.

    • melanieuk1

It sounds like a RealRoadยฎ Killer.
Nicely detailed in the video, actually explaining and showing you how it works.

      • IceVioletteDevil

Why take a stab at rFactor 2 in an article focusing on iRacing? Just to stir up trouble? Why would it “kill” Real Road?

Anyway. It’ll be interesting to see this feature implemented at some point.

      • Ray Tozzi

i think he/she was just comparing it to real road and saying it would be better

      • http://batman-news.com Leeman

No, I don’t think so. melanieuk1 has been consistent in their stance against rF2 (i.e. don’t like the graphics, therefor it sucks).

      • Ray Tozzi

Oh well in that case, its their loss. Anyone who minds the graphics or doesn’t like it because it isn’t pretty just shouldn’t be here. Go back to your beautiful pcars….

      • IceVioletteDevil

If it had been anybody but Mel making that comment, I wouldn’t have responded the way I did. But taking her history and aggressive anti-ISI stance into account… Yeah, no… that wasn’t a benign comparison at all.

      • BackMarker

You are showing a good attitude toward other sims lately! please keep it up! I love you and pray for you, Ice/hexagrams/assoicator!
        : )

      • melanieuk1

How am I anti ISI, I purchased Game Stock Car Extreme a few days ago, it uses ISI technology, and it’s a good sim, probably the best of it kind that uses the ISI technology, stop letting my opinion on a sim get to you, and move on, I don’t let anyone’s opinion change the way I like or dislike a particular racing title.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

If you’re as innocent as you claim, then surely it would be wise to just take a second and think about what you’re writing and how people may react to it. Just so that there are no misunderstandings. Then you don’t have to spend time having to defend yourself.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

I agree. I see it as a stab at rF2 also.

I`ll be watching melanie. You’re subtle but I can read between the lines.

      • Gui Cramer

There was nothing subtle about it :p.

      • D3

Nah it was subtle, just spell subtle in all caps though…XD

      • IceVioletteDevil

        Nah, as usual.

      • Pablo Coronel

Stab at RF2? the best simulation ever? no way, she already win a ban because his hate… because his problem.

      • pCarssucks

You really need to let go of this rF2 hate and perhaps see a professional.

      • melanieuk1

Look whos talking, with that username.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

That’s fairly ironic given your antagonistic nickname.

      • Alex White

Speaking of odd usernames, F1 cars don’t race anymore, they fuel and tyre save for 90 minutes! ๐Ÿ˜›

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Yeah but I don’t when I race F1. Which is when I’m doing this sim-racing thingy.

      • Pablo Coronel

        You don’t learn uh?

    • john

Hehe now is evolution of racing game. not that one particular game have this already 3 years.

      • QUF

Maybe because I am not that aware of what rf2’s real road does exactly.

Iracing created a good video explaining what it consists. So maybe rf2 already does this, but my comment was before this deduction.

  • Patrik Marek

very cool ! thumbs up for iRacing
now the only thing I “need” is offline with no sub and race against AI and I’m in !

    • ImageArtSigns .

…especially AI, even if it was in TEST mode only…do they need AI to future proof themselves…I think so.

      • BackMarker

did you complete that big iracing survey recently? tell them what you want in the service!

      • ImageArtSigns .

Yes I did…and I checked the ‘want AI’ box…whether they do it is another matter…maybe in the future

      • LithiumFox

Honestly, AI is around the only reason I keep rFactor 2… i don’t really want to see it in iRacing. I see iRacing as the MP version of rF2 now lol.

      • ImageArtSigns .

Yes I hear what you are saying…but if AI was able to be dialed in at ‘TEST MODE’, only, racers in ‘PRACTICE’ and ‘RACE’ sessions would not even come into contact with any AI at all…but the AI option in ‘TEST’ is there for those who wish to have it without disturbing the Hardcore iRacing people in Practice and Race sessions.

  • Bakkster

I am so excited for this. I can barely believe it’s actually happening. The best stuff is worth waiting for, though.

  • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

So no way it could be ‘on par with’ ? It has to kill ? ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Bakkster

It’s just a common saying for the next big thing, just search Google for “iPhone killer”. Who will have the new feature everyone wants to beat?

I think it’s not aiming high enough to want to match the features of the competition. If there’s an issue with what was said, it’s only any history of being overly critical.

    • IceVioletteDevil

      Annihilate… trash… take out… blow away… lol.

  • DogonAtheist

you have to remember this is a anti-iracing news site. May have been instaban if he had compared it to pcars

    • BackMarker

I don’t think it is an anti-iracing news site. There are many people who have a puerile “sour grapes” attitude toward the service that they constantly express on the site.

  • Gui Cramer

Very interesting news and I really like their presentation of it. The temperature and sun aspects are really cool.

    * One doesn’t have to have a game to appreciate bits about it *

    • D3

Yeah, that was intriguing. Loved the way you could see where that starting light was casting a shadow on track and was making it a bit cooler there.

      • Bakkster

The overhead shot of Bristol looking asymmetric is awesome to illustrate that.

      • Aaron Carlisle

rFactor 2 does this as well. Parts of the track in the shade are cooler than the parts that are in direct sunlight. Nothing new, really.

      • D3

Oh cool, didn’t know that. It’s really good to see this stuff though, how progress is made with the sims. Can’t imagine what it will be like in 20 odd years.

      • Pablo Coronel
  • melanieuk1

    Thank you very much.

  • Dentykaffalatta

Could be interesting I think. I just resubscribed for a year on the half price thing but haven’t bothered downloading yet as I don’t plan to try iRacing again until I get my motion rig, ECCI pedals and Accuforce wheel to see if it makes it more real. I can’t say so far iRacing has impressed me much about the SIM side of SIMracing but it IS a good racing game. I really lost hope in the SIM side with the “IRACING TWO POINT OH!!!!” and so-called “NEW TIRE MODEL” B.S. a few years ago and so far they haven’t really changed that opinion. I do though keep resubbing and checking in to give it a chance though. These days I just enjoy it as “a racing game” and don’t take the “SIMULATOR” part too seriously.

    • SonnyK

Since you already Subscribed.. why don’t you try again and see if your opinion changes? You dont have to have a ECCI, AF , Motion Rig to see what has changed since last 4 years.

      • Dentykaffalatta

Nothing’s changed much so far so I don’t see how it could have the last 4-6 months since my sub expired. It’s possible I suppose but so far all iRacing has done as far as physics is make claims and promises. I still quite like it but have yet to see a real life MX5 slide off the road at barely above walking speed. lol.

      • LithiumFox

Also, to add onto SonnyK’s post, some of the cars also have chassis torsion. But NTMv6 fixed a few of the carcass issues they were having. Still have some lateral grip fixes to do tho. Very close I feel.

  • Paul Maguire

Looks more advanced than real road for rf2

    • D3

Surprisingly, it looks the same to me, I guess it should as it’s rubber and temps haha.
Rubber being laid down and marbles building. Marbles clearing as you drive over them, etc.
I know in rF2 it seems dependant on loading or slippage from the tyres, hence you see the rubber build in braking zones and not so much on straights. Also different rubbers and constructions affect how the rubber is being laid down.

      • BackMarker

yeah, good point about braking zones. Mr. Garrison was using an oval track in the short vid above. I would hope iracing will also have items like you mentioned above about more buildup of rubber in braking zones.
pardon my ignorance of marbles, but how/where are they created in real-life? i assume more around corners where the tires are under more stresses?

      • D3

Usually you see feathered edges on tyres as they wear, it’s a strip of worn soft rubber that builds up and gets flicked off the edge of the spinning tyre.
Yep, usually through the corners where the tyres start to deform and flick the feather edge off. It’s related to tyre compound hardness iirc, softer the rubber, the more that is dropped.

    • IceVioletteDevil

ISI just need to implement fully functional track temperatures and that’s that. It’s just a matter of priority. rF2 has dynamic rubbering, marbles, rain that washes the rubber and marbles away, drying line. So no; it looks about the same.

      • BackMarker

Hi hexagramss/associator/Ice! how do i turn on the fully functional track temps? or is that coming in an rf2 update?

      • Pablo Coronel

        Update.

      • BackMarker

Thanks! good to see these features being brought out by iRacing and ISI.

    • Pablo Coronel

      Why?

    • Matthew Arnold

I dont think any of us truly know how deep rf2’sa implementation goes. One thig they could do better is videos like this one, where they give us a more in depth behind the scenes as to what goes into RF2 ๐Ÿ™‚

This video from iracing was fantastic.

Dont get me wrong, i like Tims videos, but hes not a Software Engineer as far as i know. Id like a video done by one of there Engineers explaining what IS in rf2.

      • Bakkster

It’s worth remembering, that this video is partly thanks to iRacing’s new PR guy who’s a video wiz. They get a solid video like this because it’s more than just sticking a mic in front of an engineer (I say this as an engineer with a passing interest in videography).

      • Pablo Coronel

“I dont think any of us truly know how deep rf2’sa implementation goes” All us RF2 owners know, if you dont, try the demo.

  • john

Well is not wrong thing to compare, but words like “Killer” are unapropriate and unnecessary. We all know why he write that way.

  • sketchyterry

Looks awesome, the biggest question for me though is when!? I don’t think it will come this year, but I hope for Q3/Q4 2016. But please surprise me iRacing (in a good way)!

    • stephenb

From what I recall of a post Tony Gardener made iracing definitely plan to release it this year.

      • sketchyterry

Ah okay, I just went had a look and Jack Davidson made a post answering lots of questions about future plans and what’s coming next and found this quote – “When Will the New Surface Model be released? New Surface model to be released by the end of the year.” So I assume that is this dynamic surface model?

Also for those interested you can see all the answers and questions here: http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/3316628.page

Edit: Other key one regarding graphics – “DX11 still on pace for the end of this year? Working on it, trying to get DX11 out by end of the year.”

      • maranello55

oh…i forgot hafta renew subs to go to the forum meh

      • sketchyterry

Have you guys at iracing updated the sounds engine? The downshift and overrun noises sound better. No new sound engine.

Day and Night transition in this build? Day and Night transitions are due after DX11 is implemented.

Why was RUF Cup fixed? Tony explained in the forums why the RUF Cup is fixed, we’ll keep an open mind to bring back OPEN in the future.

Any graphical changes this build? Yes on graphical changes, switching to a new lighting system, debuting with the Aston Martin, new Legends, and the Corvette so far. Itโ€™s a physical based rendering system.

Why release the GT1 Aston first? We released the GT1 Aston first because the Corvette is quite lonely by itself.

Is graphics even a top priority? Graphics is definitely a priority, currently working on how physics affects graphics, aka the physical-based rendering system. Also working on a new particle system.

What changes are made to the V6 Tire Model? New V6 Tire Model changes: driveability, tire degradation, and vehicle response.

I would like to know if the future of iRacing is to please the masses of gamers… Or if it’s to create the most realistic and immersive form of racing. So many companies are making moves in their development to ensure they are reaching the masses, They have become more worried about the money than creating their original goal. My fear is that iRacing may cater to the masses rather than creating year after year, a more REALISTIC and IMMERSIVE racing experience… Many can’t afford a race car and all that is involved , and iRacing is the next best thing. I don’t want a game , I want a racing simulation. What outlook does iracing have in 2015 and moving forward? The latter, we want to achieve the most realistic form of racing possible.

When Will the New Surface Model be released? New Surface model to be released by the end of the year.

Any news on the Nurburgring? Nurburgring is coming along on schedule, shooting for a Fall release date. The GP and Nordschelife will be $14.95 each. (regular price) If you own both, you can also drive the combined for no extra charge

Have you got any plans at all to finish Long Beach? Yes we plan to finish Long Beach

When will we get the Mercedes AMG GT3? Mercedes due next year, we’re already working on it

Which layout will we be getting for the Combined Nurburgring, VLN/24hr, or the Full GP and Nordscheleife (like Forza)? We haven’t determined the final layouts yet, but will try to provide as many as we can

What ever happened to the a new Daytona Prototype? Daytona Prototype is in development, one of the next two cars to come out.

MP4-30 coming this year? We’re trying to get the MP4-30 out this year.

Is the camry going to be an update to the exsisting car or a whole new car? The new Camry is a free update, will replace the old car

DX11 still on pace for the end of this year? Working on it, trying to get DX11 out by end of the year.

What about the 2 Other missing Aston Martins? It depends on what Astons we get car data for.

How is the F1 car coming along? 3D modeling is underway, physics guys started on the new engine for the new F1 car.

Tony said about plans probably being part of this year Simracing Expo? Any news about this? Would be so cool so see Tony and Crew again We’re going to the Sim Expo again this year!

Do you have any plans for updating Oculus Rift support with the new optimised SDK? We’ll get to it, yes

What about other BMWs? You said that there are 4 licences. No new BMWs planned in the short term, working with other manufacturers

Any news on the re scans of pocono and michigan and when we might get them? No news on that, sorry.

Is the new Legends car free? Yes, the new Legends car is free, will replace the old one.

Anything on the new MX5? We’ll be building the new MX5 soon, and yes it will be free.

Any updates upcoming to Star Mazda or Legends sounds? Star Mazda, Skip Barber, and HPD all have new engine sounds in this build, and we did some tweaking to the Mazda.

Will the new Camry be free? The new Camry is free if you own it already.

Are you planning on more GT1 cars by any chance? We’ll see how popular the new GT1 series becomes. The Corvette is getting the new PBR lighting model as well.

      • maranello55

        Thanks

      • BackMarker

is this posted in the iracing forum? i have never seen any iracing staff around any other sites to answer questions.

      • sketchyterry

Yeah it was posted in the iRacing forums. The best place to check for latest development stuff is here – http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/1524566.page

      • Bakkster

It’s a transcript on the forums, but the text came from a Twitch stream they did a month ago.

      • BackMarker

Oh, that makes sense! duh! I thought that sketchyterry had combed the internet to make the very informative list
        (insert embarrassed emoji here)

  • Pablo Coronel

    Oh… Real Road.

    • LithiumFox

Yes, but they did state this was an end goal for them a good long while ago. Like… Kaemmer’s wanted this since NR2003… lol. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • IceVioletteDevil

I don’t see anything in that video that would suggest that it’ll leave rF2 in the dust. Don’t get me wrong, I’m mega excited to have those features in iRacing one day. But why would it be miles better than rF2, that has had these things implemented for years now?

    • Bakkster

Does Real Road vary the track temp? I haven’t seen anything as definitive as the thermal images here, though I’d expect ISI have something.

It wouldn’t be the first -killer to not live up to its name. Know how many iPhone-killers there have been? ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • IceVioletteDevil

The effects of the track temps in rF2 aren’t fully finished yet. But the rubber and marbling simulation is the best there is. Also the dynamically drying road is great.

      • Pablo Coronel

Track temps/humidity changes comes in update.

  • BackMarker

awesome! I love the hardwork and detail put into iracing features!
    : )

  • Lukas Macedo

More and more competition is a great thing for our hobby. I remember when I was an iRacer and the feeling that they were just stalling because there was really no competition (specially MP). Back in the days it was iRacing x GTR2 x Race07 x RF1 x NetkarPro. Now they are all working the best they can to improve their products. All win for us.

    • Robert

Why aren’t you in iracing now? Just curious.

      • Lukas Macedo

At some point I got tired of all the talk about the new NTMs. Every new build it was the same talk about how this new tire model will be perfect, until the next one. Also how the car XYZ handling is so perfect, only to have it handle the polar opposite on the next build (also perfect, somehow) and so on. In a nutshell they kept promising things and failing to deliver. “But wait! Next build will be perfect”…

      • LithiumFox

Oddly, that’s exactly why I love iRacing. It feels like it’s not right, but at the same time it’s almost perfect. Which I think is more of a “It feels like it should be right, why isn’t it?” because you’re not in a real car.

Though they did mention that the lateral grip issue is on Kaemmers big to-do list for the next one, I really enjoy NTMv6 already. Did a powerslide in the MX-5. Didn’t feel like a fool. ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Lukas Macedo

All good. I am from the pre-NTM era. We were all grayish giant lizards back then. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I still remember all the rage/outcry when the first NTM version was finally released. I miss you, skip barber… ๐Ÿ˜€

      • LithiumFox

Skip barber is love skip barber is life. Feels good on ntmv6. Sounds better now too. Like cylinders are being strangled, as it should.

      • Robert

Gotcha. About the same here, production just felt slow. I also think the older I get, the less social I am. I get frustrated racing humans but have fun racing AI. It’s been several years since I was in iracing, unless they add AI, I will probably never go back which is a shame, it was a nice game.

      • Descoat

Thatยดs exactly my opinion. They have the best online competition with Gran Turismo Physics as one of my friends use to say.

  • MrMaki

    Oh no, @6:42

    “SOON”

…was really hoping to see it this year. Now it’s all soon again ;-(

  • Stepreo

Appreciate the “physical modelling” of iRacing.

  • Pablo Coronel

Everyone wants to copy RF2, the King.

    • BackMarker

No, everyone wants to copy the real-world: THE KING
      : )

      • Pablo Coronel

Good one, but you know ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • The Dark

      u trying to start trouble?

      • Pablo Coronel

        I’ts a trouble for you?

      • The Dark

i didnt say it was but maybe for other people. i am sitting on the outside asking a question.

  • David Hughes

Massive step up for iRacing. If DK cracks the tyre model (and it’s a big if) then this would be a formidable sim. Fingers crossed.

  • App Download

I don’t find iRacing any better than any other sim, and in fact in some respects it is worse. They’ve all got their good and their bad, and that is further confused by personal preference of the user. What you like I hate, and vice versa. But iRacing is just a money gobbler that isn’t really any better or worse than the other new sims. There’s still too much wrecking, far better to race in any league where everyone knows each other and wreckers are dealt with severely. Wrecking idiots are the biggest problem for sim racing, and iRacing is pretty bad for that.

    • Patrik Marek

from my experience, there’s way less wreckers in iracing then in any other sim I tried,
leagues are not for everyone due to time commitments

  • Kev

I’ve heard some very disturbing things about how iRacing grip is inaccurate with respect to how many laps are driven. Won’t something like this only magnify the underlying problems?

    • Bakkster

That depends on the root cause of the issue. Is it because the track is perpetually ‘green’, there’s no marbles off the racing line, and the track temperature is wrong? If so, making the track dynamic is exactly the thing that’s missing between the sim and the real-world times. In other words, is the tire model wrong, or is the track’s state just different from the times we’re comparing to?

At the very least, this is vital to oval racing, to create opportunities for cars to run multiple lines through the corners as the track changes.

  • Hurdy Hurdy

Dynamic Tracks in the works and now they announce Le Mans is coming.

Just need that day/night cycle now.
