The guys over at have uploaded a new gameplay video of Gran Turismo 6, showing the BMW Z4 GT3 at Silverstone.

Taken from the GamesCom show floor demo, the video is special as it features direct-feed audio that has not been grabbed by a microphone but straight from the monitor, allowing us to take a good listen at GT6’s sounds.

Gran Turismo 6 will come to the Playstation 3 starting December 6. featuring 1200 cars, 150 of which will be new to Gran Turismo.

As announced by Kazunori Yamauchi, the distinction between standard & premium models will remain, the cars ported over from Gran Turismo 4 will be slightly touched up to fit the new title better.

GT6 will also come with 33 tracks, with seven locations being all-new including Silverstone, the home of Nissan’s GT Academy competition.

    I know, it’s boring but … OMG … that sound !!!

  • Ross Siggers

    oh dear…

  • Nick James

That is the worse thing I have heard from a game ever…….didn’t know a GT3 race car sounded like a scooter, they really need to sort this, cannot be released like that for crying out loud…..I WONT be getting a PS3 for this like I did GT5 and sold everything within months and went back to Forza 4 !!

    • Christopher Trees

Why be so offensive to scooters… Seriously a scooter sounds amazing compared to this crap,

    • Realkman666

Are you enjoying the race cars without downforce?

      • Nick James

Unfortunately this is a problem with FM4 but everyone has the same problem so it isn’t such an issue BUT at least they actually sound like race cars !!

  • damys

horrible sound .. i saw the video without audio

  • Jos

so terrible it can only be placeholders, kaz was talking about a new method of doing the engine noise I hope its good.

    no more dyson!

  • Realkman666

    That’s just pathetic.

  • F1Racer

That really does remind me of the 80’s game Outrun that was played in the arcades. (Hence the proper term arcade).

    • bduddy

Outrun? Really? Come on, you’re better than this. You should be trying to get rid of this kind of stupid comment, not making it.

      • Realkman666

Maybe he hit his head. Have some faith.

      • F1Racer

Yes it was indeed a Eureka moment.

      • Art J

I’m too young to know the “Outrun”, but the clip above does indeed have a hilarious, oldschool Atari-feel to it, similar to other racing games from early ’90s era (though I presume it’s because of easy AI settings and driving aids being “on”). Engine sound doesn’t help either – I really hope it’s just some kind of temporary placeholder!

      • F1Racer

Well pardon me for having an opinion! Not I’m not better than that actually. I had to really stretch myself to write that one.

Just sayin’ if I heard this sound in a racing game in the 80’s (when quite a few simmers here probably weren’t even born), I wouldn’t be blown away. The sound is crap! Is that better ?
For a money-rich franchise who’s budget and resources totally dwarfs that of SMS, it can easily be said that SMS’s car sounds put GT6 into the stone age and this is GT’s 6th outing compared to an alpha stage sim.

Anyway it was a light, flippant comment. Take it that way.
Maybe I should have compared it to a Dyson like others then you would have left me alone. Or maybe its my ‘Moderator’ tag that attracted your attention which is why you felt you could tell me what I should or shouldn’t be doing.

I should have added a smiley I guess. Well consider it edited to hopefully curtail any further bewilderment.

  • Brock Samson

This is the same kind of sounds we’ve heard in GT5, GT4, and probably he others as well though I don’t recall specifically. The fact that there has been no real improvement this close to release tells me one thing, the Gran Turismo series isn’t worth another minute of my time.

    • Realkman666

I think some cars have acceptable sound, but you have to look for them.

  • Anonymous

Sounds perfect! They really hit the nail on the head with those sounds!

  • fkkamil

GT, are you kiddin? it is not about the amount of cars, trust me.

  • Tariq Gamil

    Dear Polyphony Digital,

Please stop making racing games until you know how to make accurate audio samples of cars.

    Yours Sincerely,
    A genuine petrolhead

  • Wim

I never thought I would say this, but the Gran Turismo supremacy is coming to an end. unless they pull a rabbit out of a hat somewhere… Just my opinion, but these sounds actually ruin the entire experience.

  • Mike Cantwell

Disgusting. There is something terribly wrong.

I gave up GT5 after I modified the 1973 Mustang and was giving 4 cylinder engine sounds for a supposed V8.

They need a new sound department.

  • Anonymous

Kabuki Car Sounds! It’s just masked real life sound.

  • Ghoults

That sounds horrible. Just plain horrible. And it doesn’t even sound like a real car at all.

After playing the gt6 demo it is pretty obvious that pd is not trying to make the cars even sound real but something that mimics the sound that onboard cameras record. You can hear these effects for example when you drive over the rumble strips and the sound adjusts itself similarly like it does in onboard videos when the mic adjusts itself or something. Maybe the mic reacts to the vibrations or maybe there is some maximum sound level that when exceeded the mic turns into lower settings or something.

Another thing that was added into gt5 in one of the patches was to make the sound of your own car less audible when you are near other cars. Same effect. And both are totally unnecessary, unrealistic and do more bad than good. The sounds in gt5 need a lot of work to be even decent and if this is a sign of things to come about gt6 then to say the sounds are improved is nothing more than a straight up lie. On gt4 these sounds would have been ok but on gt6 it is a joke imho.

  • Anonymous

there is no excuse for those sounds. ..None.

  • Nick

    A real BMW Z4 GT3 sounds like a bear and a lion,
    Gt6’s sounds like a cat

  • F1Racer

Well done, you just got yourself banned.

    • Hugo Stiglitz

Can you show a slightly censored version of what he wrote? I’m curious.

      • F1Racer

Lets just say it was repeated use of the ‘F’ word whilst slagging off the GT6 sounds. Totally unnecessary pollution. He must have thought he was on YouTube. Zero tolerance for that kinda stuff.

  • Roger Wallentin

OMG that must be one of the worst engine sounds in any game or sim I’ve heard in 10 years, seriously!!

And this is coming from a big GT5 fan…

How can they give access to this publicly, especially knowing the criticism on engine sounds, are they deaf!?

    • Hugo Stiglitz

Big GT5 fan? Funny considering this sound is directly from GT5. If GT5 was still good despite crappy sounds, GT6 will be better.

      • Roger Wallentin

GT5 had a large mix of engine sounds, some where quite good but many are really bad and all had this synthetic buzz.

This Z4 GT3 from GT6 is one of the worst samples I’ve heard in GT5 or anywhere else which is why I’m so puzzled that they use this when showing of their new product!

I did this video some time back with some tweaks for the engine sounds:

      • Anonymous

Synthetic buzz – one of the words I would also use when describing whats so bad about GT5 engine sounds, and describing sounds is notoriously hard.

I watched the video above a while ago, (I was going to post on youtube of all places lol) but I got turned off by the comments supporting it. To me, this proves that no amount of added bass or distortion is going to fix GT5’s sound engine. It fundamentally needs to be rebuilt for GT6/7. I just wish the majority of GT fans would realize that when we criticize the sound, this isn’t our idea of improving things.

      • Hugo Stiglitz

I believe that they need to completely redo the sound as well.

When I saw video of them getting their samples, I could immediately see issues with what they were doing. They placed the mic’s far too close. They need to put the mic’s further away not only for ambience, but for bass frequencies.

  • Matt Orr

I’ve been playing through GT2, honestly…. it sounds better. That isn’t a “it’s cool to hate on GT sound” post either.

    • Hugo Stiglitz

That’s just ridiculous. I have GT2, it sounds like garbage even compared to GT5. Get out of here with that. You’re on drugs or your memory is betraying you if you really believe that

      • Matt Orr

It sure as hell isn’t memory considering I’ve been playing it for the last two weeks.

  • Diromo

lol, what in the hell are these sounds? It doesn’t sound bad – it sounds funny

    • Gniewko Ostrowski

      it sounds bad either.

  • Jimmy Bogren

Sounds awful. And the revlimiter – I hate the f-in revlimiter in GT! In games that get it right you can actually feel/hear when the engine is about to peak. In GT you are suddenly just there. You never felt it coming. Muscle-cars in particular is a total joke in GT.
Same thing with tire-spin. There is no room to play with the throttle in GT. Once the tires starts to spin – BAM – you’re on the revlimiter. Compare this to Forza that actually gives you some room to play with the throttle while the tires are spinning.

    • Roger Wallentin

Agree, wheelspinn and clutch/throttle control is more accurately simulated in Forza (and pretty much all PC sims).

This is one of Forzas most accurate parts IMO, clutch, shifter and wheelspin implementation is really good.

Havent tried this much in detail in the GT6 demo, but hope they have addressed this. I really hope they also address the horrible manual shifter penelty between 1:st and 2:nd gear where you need to wait for about 1-2 seconds before engaging 2:nd or it will not engage (blowing any hopes of a hotlap).

  • Pablo Coronel

I dont understand, they can produce the best graphics on the market (in a very limited hardware) but cant produce decent sounds! i going mad!!

  • Hugo Stiglitz

Crappy sounds or not, this is still gonna be the best Gran Turismo ever. With everything they ARE adding, the things they are actually getting right, it’s gonna be awesome.

They’ve added to and fixed nearly everything from GT5 besides the sounds, not to mention improved the physics a ton, which is what I play racing games for. Realistic sounds are nice but they’re not a dealbreaker. These sounds are better than netkar pro’s. It never stopped me from playing nKP and it won’t stop me from playing GT6.

Not to mention, with everyone complaining, I would almost guarantee if they’re not fixed by launch, they will be patched. Anyone who owned GT5 knows that they support the game like a PC dev would years after launch, so I don’t see any reason that they can’t fix sounds after release. They pretty much immediately fixed the HSV-010 sound after releasing it as DLC because people complained and now it’s one of the most accurate sounding cars in the game.

One thing they really need to work in to the sounds though is ambience. Even outside of the car there’s no reverb or indication that you’re outside. It sounds like you’re in a isolation booth or something. So sterile. Even the samples they have no would sound better with a little ambience

    • Michael Leary

“They pretty much immediately fixed the HSV-010 sound after releasing it as DLC because people complained and now it’s one of the most accurate sounding cars in the game”

Tell me you really didn’t just refer to it as “one of the most accurate sounding cars in the game”, because it isn’t. Far from it.

Have you ever heard the HSV-010 before? Genuine query.

      • Nicolas Grignon

agreed, to say that the HSV update is the best sounding car in the game is to be deaf or never have put a foot on a real track during a race WE.

      • Hugo Stiglitz

I didn’t say it was the best, LFA is the best.

        Real Thing:

        Exhaust sound:

The exhaust sound is off but in car it’s very accurate

      • Hugo Stiglitz

Yes. Watch onboard videos of it, compare to cockpit view, then watch outside videos of it, compare to chase camera. Not that hard to figure out.

      • Chris

Wrong on fixing all sounds, cause they never got the sounds right on GT5, even after release they never patched them to sound right, my lawnmower sounds better than their “F40” That’s one thing Forza has down solid, maybe GT should check out that game called Forza, because GT team are in denial on sounds. Why should it take a mass of complaints, don’t they have ears???

  • Professional Operator

    Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Imbecile?

Look at the AI, even casual noobs will find it boring and too easy.

  • Andy Thompson

This really is bad for a 6th release, the only think they’ve improved since GT3 is graphics!

On a side note, I spend more time with games that have the correct sounds. Fact.

    • Hugo Stiglitz

Obviously you haven’t played it then. They’ve improved just about everything other than AI, sound, and visual damage. Especially the physics are leaps and bounds better than GT1-4.

      • Andy Thompson

I certainly have. Put many hours into the 370z at Silverstone and the sounds are awful, input lag is completely unacceptable and no feedback on the limit of grip and certainly no recovery. It’s very sad as I used to be a big GT fan but other sims like AC have shown that the bar has been raised.

  • Jim. C

Do they really think cars sound like that?

  • Anonymous

    Nice sound….if it was a Dyson….
