C.A.R.S. Goes Live With First Previews & Development Build

C.A.R.S. Goes Live With First Previews & Development Build

Slightly Mad Studios have just officially kicked-off their C.A.R.S. project that is being developed on the company’s all-new WMD portal.

WMD (World of Mass Development) will allow interested gamers to participate in the development of the new title by becoming team members, allowing them to check out the development progress in the WMD forum, talk to the developers, participate in key decisions regarding the game’s direction and enjoy development builds of the new title.

Speaking of which, C.A.R.S. doesn’t make its public launch just with a bunch of previews as team members get to enjoy a working build of the upcoming new title right after sign up. Even though the finished C.A.R.S. won’t ship before Thanksgiving 2012, the current build already includes plenty of content to keep team members entertained.

The current build comes with two tracks (Watkins Glen & Imola) and eight different cars, including known machinery such as the Audi R18 TDI Le Mans winner, the Audi A4 DTM, three different historic Lotus F1 cars, two Radicals and a state of the art Formula Car.

Due to licensing still being in progress, the content still sports fictional names despite being a very accurate representation of the real-life vehicles & venues as C.A.R.S. is pushing to become the definitive racing simulation.

The current build allows to try the cars and tracks in practice mode without AI for infinite laps as more features will be added as development of the title continues. To give you an idea of what’s coming up within the next 12 months, here are some of the planned features for the finished title:

Planned Features

– FRANCHISE MODE allows you to carve out a personalized career starting in the Karting world and then progressing on to whichever motorsport specialization you prefer including Rally, Touring Cars, Open-Wheel, GT, Le Mans, and many more!

– Play CO-OP with a friend as Driver/Co-Driver

– FULL TEAM MANAGEMENT… Have a large number of friends? Create, manage, and compete together!

– Experience the excitement of PIT STOPS like you’ve never seen before!

– Revolutionary PIT-2-CAR RADIO gives you the strategic advantage

– DYNAMIC Time Of Day & Localized Weather make every race unique and challenging

– 10+ GAME MODES covering every form of motorsport

– CLOUD-BASED SOCIAL NETWORK allows you to connect with friends, compare times & scores, compete and challenge each other, and share content

– USER-GENERATED CONTENT – Create your own liveries, decals, tuning setups, and even events! Then share them with the world – either for free, in-game credits or even real money!

– PUSHING TO THE LIMITS – Advanced physics, lighting, and AI

To ensure a realistic experience, Slightly Mad Studios have teamed up with none other than Ben Collins, the man who spent seven years being “The Stig” on BBC’s popular Top Gear automotive show.

“I’m delighted to be working on the C.A.R.S. project to create the best racing simulation in the world! Computer ‘games’ and simulations have become integral to success on the race track and I will be applying all my racing knowledge to provide handling input and advice to the builds on a regular basis,” Collins commented.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting some of the project’s contributors at the trackday events and working with SMS’s team of experts, whose passion and pedigree will be key to the development of this incredibly exciting new model.”

Below are three previews to whet your appetite. To join WMD and start playing the build today, follow the steps below. Interested sim racers can become team members for as little as $10, entitling them to monthly development builds and participation in the WMD forums.

Other membership options even include weekly development-builds, script access to the game, direct contact with the developers and other perks such as your name and face in the finished game and VIP access to future events. For more info on the World of Mass Development concept and the different membership options, check out this page.

To start playing the development build today, follow these three steps.

1.Visit the website & register on the WMD forum.

2. Buy any tool pack to become a member.

3. Download the build (link at the top of the forum main page) and enjoy!

Update:

These are the recommended minimum specs to run the development build:

Quad Core 2.4ghz or better
9800gt 512MB
2GB Ram (3-4GB recommended)

Also, here are a bunch of cool videos from community members, showing some of the cars the build contains in action:

  • Ross Siggers

I need a new pair of boxers after looking at those screenshots… o_o

  • 隆隆Daniel!!

As i see, they are doing well,  they are pushing the community to make a good sim, i think here will start a new good sim saga. Hope i can see any videos.

  • Steve Farrell

Ill get into it when I have some money early next year. Looking at the first screenshot it looks it would melt my rig lol.

  • tepsu

Well I have to say, it looks fantastic, the content seems fantastic, everything seems FANTASTIC. Would be nice of them to put out some kind of system requirements? I for one, don’t have a supercomputer and thus I won’t be paying the 10 bucks before I know I can run this.
The lighting and shadows look exceptional from those screens.

  • Predrag Drobac

If you ask me, this sounds much more promising than rFactor2, which we already know it will be good. 馃槢
When thousands of gamers and simracers can follow development of the project, and in the same time to be influential (more or less) how the cars drive, looks, sounds, etc, simply it must be good. I saw that if you buy one of the top two most expensive tool packs, you can even access the game scripts!

I’m really tempted to buy at least Junior tool pack for a start.

  • Montoya

It runs very smooth on my rig in 1920×1080 with 8xAA using the following specs:

    Intel Quad i5 2500k
    nVidia GTX 570
    16 GB Ram

Granted, that’s a quite powerful system but if other titles like Shift 2 give you decent frame rates, C.A.R.S. should run okay on the same system  馃檪

  • Ross Siggers

8xAA? So is this version of the engine not deferred?

  • Ross Siggers

Downloading the build now… I’ve not been this excitied about sim racing in a long while. This is the start of something great methinks :3

  • Sam Binfield

I can only echo what others are saying, but this looks extremly promising. I really like this idea of monthly builds, kind of like the early days of minecraft. Here’s hoping we end up with a great sim at the end of it. Definatly looking forward to trying this at the weekend. 馃榾

  • Predrag Drobac

Ohhhhhhhh, post some impressions mate, I bet we all would like to hear them! Graphics, physics, audio, FF? Shoooooooooot! 馃檪

  • Robert G枚dicke

    I’m 25€ lighter now. 馃檪
Let’s see what they came up with for this Pre-Alpha build.
People have to keep this in mind though, we’re talking about a very, very early build here. This is just to get some impressions of what’s to come in the near future.

    Downloading now. 35minutes to go.

  • crosschris

good for you! please report back with your findings and perhaps a Youtube video?!

  • WiZPER

    Renders you mean ?

  • Lennart

This sounds interesting. Apart from these screen, are there any videos available?

  • Fernando Deutsch

It certainly looks good, but I would like to hear some reviews or feedback from people. Also, a video on youtube would be nice just to know more about how it performs.

  • Montoya

The first two show game graphics  馃槈

  • Lennart

Are there any Minimum System Requirements available?

  • Peicheck L贸pez

i hope the servers were faster to put some videos 馃槈
    70kb/s right now 馃檨

  • WiZPER

Okay, thought it might have been the first one only – the second looks very nice also 馃檪

  • amdr

    – USER-GENERATED CONTENT – Create your own liveries, decals, tuning setups, and even events! Then share them with the world – either for free, in-game credits or even real money

    Joy…

  • amdr

    Screens do look sexy <img src=”extra/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/smiley-wink.gif” title=”Wink” border=”0″ alt=”Wink”/>

  • kkacper

Got the junior membership for now and downloading the game! I’m really excited! When it finishes I’ll write to you about my first impressions! I’ll probably then buy the team member some other month to get the weekly updates rather than monthly! I loved all SMS games so I really hope this drives the same as it looks!

  • Montoya

    Coming up very soon..

  • Random Username

So we’re not under any kind of NDA? 馃槑

  • Novum

    three letters WOW

  • frigopie

third one looks like the ingame gfx engine but with a lot of AA. Reflections, etc. are the same as ingame… looks impresive. I thought the game would use gmotor2 engine, but this one looks like shift2…

  • DeDios

Tomorrow i’ll buy Team Member pack. Can’t wait to try this. Looks incredible. 馃檪

  • Silly(c)One

Damn that was fast… Congrats guys !

This is exciting ! I’m in, quite curious to follow the meetings 馃槈

  • WiZPER

Slightly Mad Studios are the guys behind Shift, so no surprise – however the last screenshot IS a render, have seen it long ago mentioned as such.

  • Silly(c)One

Downloading right now, should be here in an hour or so… The server’s probably overloaded right now.

Any chance for a motion profile in X-Sim ? 馃槈

  • Blacker

Just became a Team Member… Can’t wait to get this started, tested, released, and improved over and over again. Cheers mates!

  • Noel Hibbard

Downloading now. This is going to take a loooong time at the pace it is going. Only 150KBytes/Sec. Can;t wait to see it!

  • Bruno L茅vesque

I thought they paid modders to make this come true… but modders have to pay to mod? lmao =-O

  • James Capper

just become a team member downloaded game and what can i say……………..YoBaby YoBaby YO
the vehicles look sound and feel great and this is just an alpha. and if this is a taste of things to come I can’t wait untill they  release the full game I’m sure it will put a lot of other games to shame.
I’m totaly in love with the lotus 49.

  • Montoya

I think you´re confusing the in-development C.A.R.S. with the finished product that will be available in late 2012..which will be free to play and come with the mentioned user-generated content features.

  • Ross Siggers

    Okay so first impressions;

    INTERFACE:
I know this is likely to change, but I like the ‘car in garage’ menu, as yet it doesn’t change depending on your car selection, but still nice, clean, simple.

    GRAPHICS:
What can I say. Beautiful, gorgeous, and I’m ashamed to say, SMS have shown ISI what classic F1’s can look like, given the technology. The model detail is incredible, the moving suspension on the Formula car. And I don’t mean the arms…if you remove the hood of teh car you can see the springs compressing. The detail aboce and below the bodywork of each car is astounding. And the tracks are brilliant representations, the lighting in this engine has been tuned perfectly. Has to be seen in motion to be believed. Also I need a new GPU xD

    PHYSICS
From what I’ve played the physics are far tighter than shift, and much closer to what teh community is expecting I suspect. I experienced little to no ‘swaying’ or ‘floating’ whatever you want to call it, apart from maybe in the Lotus 49, which was understandable. I can’t comment on extended sessions yet because I’ve only had time to run a few laps in each car, I’m guessing they’re better on warmer tyres. steering wheel input lag is minimal, no more than a patched shift 2, and the old F1’s sure feel very gpl, ‘get the tail out and balance’ kind of way.

    FFB
Force feedback is pretty good over heavier bumps, but some of the subtle effects aren;t there yet. But this is a feature that’s being looked at atm.

    SOUNDS
Sounds come through pretty good. Similar to shift I’d say, which imho had pretty good sounds. Less tranny whine this time around though xD

I am thoroughly, thoroughly impressed that this is a pre-alpha. Incredible.

  • Montoya

Guys, before sharing your impressions, please check out the terms & conditions you´ve agreed to when signing up.  馃檪

  • Ross Siggers

Do you wanna take this down while I check? :X Apologies

  • Ricoo

Terms and conditions are not particularly clear on what can be expected from membership and what is needed to get revenue share, neither what ROI you can expect. It is even stated that it is not an investment oppotrunity. That is clearly different from what Ian wrote on Nogrip.

It is stated : “In order to earn Revenue Share you must make a contribution to the Game(s).”

But I have not found a definition of a contribution…

  • Montoya

Forget that, feel free to share your thoughts 馃檪

  • Tom Hunt

Hey Montoya, just going to go buy my 10 euro pass, really excited for this project, it looks amazing.

Just wondered, is there the opportunity to upgrade later? If I really fall in love with this sim and want more regular updates can I pay an extra 15 euros or do I need to spend another 25? Money is tight, and with so many big games coming out this season I’m trying to cut back on spending!

Cheers, can’t wait to download it.

  • Montoya

Guys, if you´ve given the build a try, please share your impressions here… looking forward to some videos too 馃檪

  • Montoya

Don’t worry, if you upgrade from “Junior” to “Team Member” you´ll only pay the 15€ difference 馃檪

  • Ross Siggers

Yes, once you buy into a level, the others stay available if you’d like to upgrade, or downgrade.

  • Ross Siggers

Okay then 馃檪  I read scanned over the terms, but I didn’t see anything glaringly out of place. had me worried there!

  • Ricoo

What is wrong with Ross comment?

Terms and conditions are a bit difficult to understand for me.

To get revenue share you must make contribution but contribution is not defined…

It is said that it is not an investment opportunity but on Nogrip Ian wrote a lot about investors and return on investment… I am lost.

  • Jon Davies

Looking forward to seeing impressions, videos and screenshots. I’d quite like to get the Junior pass, but I would like to wait to see what other people think. 馃檪

  • Tom Hunt

Cheers, might consider that early next year when my next student loan comes through heh…

  • Fernando Deutsch
  • Philip Antonia

Downloading at the moment. Looking forward to trying this out.

I like the fact that I can pay 10 Euro to start with and when you click on Tool Packs to view further investment levels it automatically deducts what you’ve already paid.

Seems very fair and gives you the chance to try with minimal cost and invest further if you like what you see 馃槈 .

Will post my thoughts after my first test run, hopefully in about an hour 馃榾 .

  • Noel Hibbard

From what I can tell from reading the terms, you have to donate content to be eligible for a return.

  • noneofyourbusiness

I’ve a strange deja vu feeling watching this. I am impressed though, with the screens as well.

  • Nathan Robinson

I think the shift 2 graphics engine is fantastic, its the driving part of it that wasn’t quite for me. They are going to be able to capture every moving and static part on every car in all their shiny and unshiny glory 馃檪

  • JohnSc

(excuse my english, it’s not very accurate)

Good first impression. Looks like “Shift 3” in some way. Awesome car models and sounds, they’re so impressive, the best that i seen in a sim game, controls and physics similar to Shift series but slightly better in my opinion, although need to be improved to be in Iracing/LFS/Rfactor/NetKat/GTR league, lack some of responsive and “sensations”.

The tracks are pretty well done (no laser scan), and there are 8 cars models: Audi R18 Le Mans, Audi A5 DTM, F1 68, F1 77, F1 86, modern F1, and two Radicals. Full Damage model.

No setups, telemetry, AI or replays….

I think, for 10€ and the possibility of monthly new builds and be in the forums, it’s a great deal…

  • skrusinbin

Shame, rF2’s graphics can’t match up >:’-( . I hope SMS don’t debase the physics, and may be open to allow mods/customization. Goodluck ..

  • Philip Antonia

5 minutes to go 馃榾 .

  • Ricoo

    Thanks Fernando for the link.

  • Mee

    Not downgrade…

  • Silly(c)One

    Wow. Wow. Wow.

I only tested it for 5 minutes, and even though it’s still in alpha stage, this is the most exciting racing simulator I have EVER seen. Guys… Wow. Feels like iRacing physics and Shift3 graphics… Completely UNREAL.

The future is beautiful, people !

  • Silly(c)One

One can only hope for a quick motion code development so we can really drive this beast with full immersion. Can’t wait !

  • Nathan Robinson

There will be mods for this but they are going to allow the modders to make money instead of working for free. The sim itself will be free to all but additional content will have to be purchased through micro transactions. In their guidelines pamphlet an example is 2 pounds for a car or track and so on. So like iracing but less expensive and no yearly fee. I think this is great because we have some fantastic modders in our community and they do it all for nothing. It’s easy to get hyped up right now but i have to agree with sillyone, the future is bright for us 馃檪

  • Kyle Williams

    My first C.A.R.S Video

For an early Alpha game this is EPIC!

  • MiKeAhOwSkI

Wow, I cannot wait to try this.

  • Peicheck L贸pez

     radical at watkins 馃檪

  • Nathan Robinson

incredible man. You can really sense the power available to you under your right foot, and thats just from watching the video! i really enjoy how the lighting on the dash changes to reflect teh angle of the sun as you go around the track, amazing! This is just what we needed to make us not think about rfactor 2. SMS put out some feelers about this project some months back and now we get concrete gameplay. Rfactor 2 has been years in the discussion and not even a second of track time yet. Thats all i’m going to say about that though as this is a day to celebrate SMS

  • Konrad Czaczyk

Wow, just wow. This game looks amazing! Definetly getting the Team Member kit. This game has everything that I want, community input, great physics, beautiful cars and graphics, and some really neat extras that I always thought about (Like Pit-to-Car Radio) And Rally??? OMGYES!!!! Downloading this will be my priority as soon as I get home (And that says something cause I just bought Forza 4 Today too….). Great Job, and good luck!

  • Ricoo

I share this undersanding of the terms and conditions, and that’s hugely different from what Ian wrote on Nogrip…

  • Jann Dircks

Can someone do a video with the R18, please? 馃檪

  • Cenotaph

Looks really good. I’ll probably try it in the next few days, once I see more feedback on the physics from drivers.

  • Ross Siggers

Oh, you did NOT just say that…

  • Renato Kadar

omg! this looks amazing. i’m now registered, and i pay, i hope that, the game is run very well with my new MSI 560Ti Hawk.  馃檪  rfactor2 and now this… very cool!

  • Kyle Williams

Another Video from me, this tim with the Audi R18

  • BSR-WiX

First impressions exeeded my expectations. Looks like a promosing project.  In DX9 i had no problems whatsoever, but in DX11 i have major texture problems . ( Asus GTX570 )  Anyone with the same problem?

  • Montoya

It’s a known issue with DX11 and some nVidia cards Wim. please use DX9 in the meantime 馃檪

  • BSR-WiX

Thans Rob, its nice to know its a known issiue. That keeps me from turning my system inside out 馃槈  .

  • Jonney Richy

Hi. Is this a one time payment or a monthly payment on one of these Team member options you can choose from in here http://forum.wmdportal.com/toolpacks.php

  • Montoya

    One-time payments, no subscription 馃檪

  • shum94

    Looks nice.
Bad physics in term of simulation.

  • shum94

lolll you’re part of the dev crew, good job lying, physics are like GTR 2 at best. Something between NFS Shift and GTR 2 and GTR2 wasnt 100 % sim…

  • Ross Siggers

    Care to expand?

  • Kyle Williams

It’s just shum94, ignore him and he goes away.

  • Silly(c)One

Yes, I also have the same issue in DX11, mostly with the grass and the barriers though, the road is fine.
I’m running a Radeon HD 6970, so it’s probably not related to the card.
The bug is so visible I don’t believe SMS is not aware of it, so I’ll just wait for next week’s build before filling a bug report.

  • Silly(c)One

This is a one time payment, of course. It is a completely new way of doing game development, so it might feel weird at first but we’ll get used to it very quickly if other developpers catch on with the concept… Exciting times !

  • shum94

Bad i mean in term of simulating reality. Might be good fun for people who were into nfs shift or gtr 2.

  • Montoya

Wait, GTR2 dosen’t qualify as simulation anymore? When did that happen?

  • Kyle Williams

Since shum94 judged it that way 馃槈

  • shum94

Everyone knows i speak the thruth in the simulation world 馃槢

  • Ross Siggers

Haha, okay, I see now, I’ll follow your advice…

    …everyone apart from Shum 馃槢

  • Ross Siggers

    Griff posted some minimum specs over on NoGrip;

    Quad Core 2.4ghz or better
    9800gt 512MB
    2GB Ram (3-4GB recommended)

  • ZombieJim

How I wish I was as enlightened as you, shum94.

  • SMS

We ask for nothing more than a minimum of playing the builds and reading the forum when you want.

The fees paid will be the same.

  • Nathan Robinson

Its hard to judge in its current state as its a beta with at least a year left until final release. This sim will be updated over the next year with input from the testers which i’m sure will result in realistic physics by final release. Most arcade racers aren’t going to bother getting in depth with the development and paying the money to be part of the team. From my experience so far, i’m rather impressed by the physics but can defo see room for improvement.

  • Nathan Robinson

Proto at watkins. Not the best driving as it was my first lap and my wife was hollering at me for dinner lol. I really am impressed and dont feel the least bit guilty about paying to become a team member. The sky is the limit from here 馃檪

  • shum94

I bet i would be faster using keyboard as a controller…
But if it’s a sim i guess it wouldnt be possible ^^

  • Nathan Robinson

lol of course you could be faster as this was literally my first lap around the track with this car. TBH though, i used to run rfactor with a keyboard and then a gamepad and was able to do quite well. No one is questioning rfactor as a sim though 馃檪

  • Mauricio Leiva

    What pack you buy?

  • Peicheck L贸pez

    audi a4 dtm at imola

i have masive input lag, any tip?
    ati user

  • Alex Ventura

Different way of doing the same thing. You buy your way into the development loop and when it ends, SMS will pay you for your “input”.

  • Derek Ashley

How does it do three screens?  Is there anything like either LFS or iRacing for that?  Edge Warping?  I wrote Bell on three separate occasions about this particular matter, and I hope it got in.  I’m sure if I put in 25k Euros it would!

    Three screens?  Good?  No good?

  • Mike Oppenheimer

I reallllly like the franchise mode, hope there are enough cars to make it realistic in terms of progression.

  • Mike Oppenheimer

Also, forgive my ignorace as i havent followed this much. When it is released in full in 2012, will it be just a 1 time payment for the game and include everything? Or will it still be tier based to get extra content?

  • shum94

Got rid of it using Catalyst AI on High Quality and the Box : Enable Surface Format Optimization checked.
    ATI though.

  • Nathan Robinson

it will be a free game. you will pay for extra content with microtransactions.

  • Nathan Robinson

Here is a vid of the DTM’s at Watkins. Feels very weird from cockpit cam which sucks cuz i love driving in car. It just doesnt feel right though. As soon as i switched to hood cam i felt like i had more control of the car. This is backwards to how it is with rfactor. There are definitely some physics issue’s like weight transfer and too much grip that i hope get worked out as we move along with this process. It’s hard to tell what the final product will be as we’ve never done anything like this before but hopefully our input really will help and in the end we get a great sim 馃檪  We need this community especially to join up as most of you are sim racers and have the knowledge to know what feels right and what doesnt. Sitting here saying the physics look crappy isnt going to help. Sign up and help out 馃槢

  • Ross Siggers

“Sitting here saying the physics look crappy isnt going to help. Sign up and help out”

Couldn’t have put it better myself!

  • F1Racer

Absolutely amazing.  Who says you can’t have it all ?  馃檪

The sounds and senese of speed in the Radical was something to behold.   Grip looks just as it should be, pretty much, for cars like these.

  • F1Racer

    Brutal !   Love it 馃檪

  • Nicolas Grignon

Love the “live” cockpit with the moving parts and the head movements… very immersive! the cars seem all alive and pretty bitchy to control which must be true in reality with their enormous power/acceleration ratio… special mention for the old Lotus!!! look like it’s moving in the RIGHT direction and not in the West (Brothers) no-exit zone as some naysayers were quick to point…  Amazing first demo, it reminds me the first time we got the LFS demo.

  • Alex White

For better FPS – turn Reflection and Shadow quality to low – this got rid of any controller lag for me 馃檪

  • sandboxgod

Ah glad this was clarified because atm I just wanted to stick to the $14 USD and then upgrade to $25 USD later this month… Too many game expensives this month. Looks great. Loved Shift 2 Unleashed so much. Plus I love the Audi R18!!! Finally a sim will have this worthy car cant wait. Thank you so much SMS and VirtualR!!!  馃榾

  • Cenotaph

Except you have to pay for the privilege and you have no guarantees. It’s never that simple. I’ll probably join you guys in a few days in WMD, but I’m already seeing what I feared, many guys saying it’s still shift and I’m thinking we might be looking at a GT5/Forza type game being built rather than a rFactor/iRacing/nkPro/LFS.

  • Mike Oppenheimer

Ah, alright, so iracing without the subscription essentially.

  • Cenotaph

Besides, I feel the terms and conditions are very sketchy. I’m still trying to figure out what kind of protection has a guy that invests 25000 and can’t or doesn’t contribute in the way SMS is expecting him too. What kind of return can he expect, is it an investment for him and his financial contribution would be enough, or is it still not an investment and essentially he payed 25000 for a game? Must he trust SMS to do the “right thing” or is guaranteed? Doesn’t look like it to me.

  • noro

    I’m sold!

  • noro

I’m a team member.. seems I can’t find the link to dl the build that supposed to be on top of the forum.. can u help thks!

  • Slawomir Wiszczor

This is fantastic sim but not for old PCs, on AMD X64 2.4ghz, nVidia 8600GT only in 800×600 res and all off you can play but still a lot of lag. iRacing is much better in this matter.

  • aaltomar

Hopefully there’s no artifical shaking when at high speed ala rFactor? How’s the input lag? Triple screen support? Each view rendered seperately like in iRacing? In Shift the triple screen did not look very good with high distortion and poor performance.

  • tepsu

So if these are the minimum you have way below, and thus it’s not surprising that it lags. Ofcourse this is pre-alpha and as development continues they may optimize it for less powerfull computers. But I’m kinda in the same boat, only C2D and HD4890 馃槓

Hopefully there’s no artifical shaking when at high speed ala rFactor?

if you know what your doing that is a very simple adjustment to stop the shaking in rF…..lol
sorry you spent all this time bouncing up and down, and didn’t bother to ask anyone for help.

    Amazing work by SMS.

    Must buy for me!!

    im totally speachless 馃槑
since 10 Years, as i saw and installed the very first FIA GT 2001 Mod and some Month later the “Mother of all Mods”(GT2002) from the Simbin Modding Crew, i never felt anything exciting in my stomac.

When i look into the sun @Watkins, something happend into me..i cannot discribe it^^
Im really shocked and can say, all what i only see in those Videos, is excatly from what im dreaming since more then Years, what i want to get in rFactor2!

With this Game C.A.R.S., and i hope with rF2, we Hardcore Simrace Enthusians start in a new Simracing Dimension.

    Ja..im speachless 馃槑

    Goodbye rFactor2,
    Goodbye my friend,
    You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

Finally a fusion of sim racing feeling and state to the art gfx. it had to be 2011 to experience it.

  • Gniewko Ostrowski

Am i missing sth, or I should be payed for giving my feedback on the testing, not in opposite as it is?

  • f12bwth

I hope the physics come out as good as the graphics because they will make or break this. They need to release some previews of the deep down options.. Camera shake, head physics, View setup and FFB are things that really need customazation on a per user basis and most sim makers don’t show it off before a release.

CARS will get some of my money as long as it is enough to make a difference.

  • f12bwth

rf2 will still have its place as the king of mods. I am pretty sure there won’t be any external mods in CARS.

  • GTEvo

i hope they implented the most important “democracy” Free-Lock Mouse Feature to zoom Onboard to your personal favorite FOV Position.
i always zoom to the Front, exactly at the Dashboard Beginning.
Never need mirrors, Wheels, Arms etc^^ 馃槑

  • f12bwth

Yeah id doesn’t take much to tweak head movement and vibration in rFactor. Just have to know where to look.

  • Nathan Robinson

From what i’ve gathered there will be a constant stream of downloadable content created by modders. It’s just these modders will be getting paid for their hard work now and you will have to pay small fees for your mods.

  • Marcelo Amaral

laser scanned tracks? yes, great big future! no laser scanned tracks? shame, just another sim.

  • Ross Siggers

Laser scanned have been looked into.

Also I’d say don’t be so narrow minded.

  • GTEvo

i would pay 100Euro for a 100% laserscanned Nordschleife and one more 100Euro for an 100% laserscanned Lemans with this sun/light /dynamic Weather Ambiente, wich we see(and announced) here in CARS @Watkins on several Simulations Contents(not Shift2/not Codemasters F12011) but on rF2, a new Simbin Titel and here at CARS too. Im a Full Heartblood Simrace Freak..but im not Full-Honk SimraceMonkey 馃槑

I will never pay any cent for an “Full-Rent a Game Concept” like this iRacing “Abzocke”.

But who cares..we live in a yellow submarine, so its all up to you and me

    AMAZING!

it’s not been narrow minded it’s being the best simulation possible and after going from rFactor to iRacing all other simulators are a joke when it comes to realistic tracks!

  • Jux

The crash physics seem funny and the sound of the crash sounds like rocket explosions.

    Examples:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSdNqZcBgVQ&feature=related

But suerly better visual damage model than in the rest of the sims.

  • Constantine Puffie

    One time payment or payments?
What I haved translated as payment means – pay one lump sum and the sim belongs to you with endless unrestricted mods of cars and tracks without further payment; and payments means – pay a sum for the base install of the sim with one track and one car and in the future of further mods of cars and tracks you will have to pay e.g GBP 1 for the lowest formula/category per car and GBP 100 for the highest formula/category per car and for the track vice versa.
    Am I right?

  • Marcelo Amaral

Can I buy extra shares later? I want to start with 25 euros just for the sake of supporting the project as I do with all others last was GSC. But if the tracks ain’t laser scanned this won’t take me away from iRacing sorry on that!

  • Jux

  • F1Racer

Can I just ask, if there are any Fanatec wheel users, what in-game settings you are using (steering sensitivity etc..)

Theres no linearity setting and my steering feels as though its not doing much initially when I turn and then it turns faster the more I turn making it suddenly more sensitive.    It’s a bit odd.
Ive put my sensitiviy down to 20%.    No deadzones.

  • F1Racer

Thats what you get when EA aren’t writing the rule book.  SMS Unleashed 馃檪

  • Ross Siggers

360/540 degrees depending on the car (I adjust on the wheel)
    003 Drift
    000 linearity
    000 abs
    -3 spring
    -3 damper

    ingame I use;

    75% ffb strength
    5% damper saturation
    60% steering sensitivity
    0% speed sensitivity
    0% deadzone

Although the higher sensitivity is to conteract my input lag. Out of interest, do you get any? And what Fanatec wheel do you have?

  • Marcelo Amaral

cool the first list of laser scanned tracks have been anounced 馃檪
So, as my first post on licensing, I’m happy to have some exciting news for you all to kick things off. We have just signed an agreement with Motorsport Vision (some of you in the UK should recognise the name), which signifies our first licensed tracks for C.A.R.S. That means we have now licensed Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park and Snetterton. As some of the best tracks in the UK, this represents a very exciting first step for us. The plan for these tracks is that we will get them laser scanned so that we have absolute accuracy – this will capture every detail of the track down to the very last mm, so you can be assured that driving the tracks will be exactly like it is in real life. 馃槑

More licensing news to come soon, so stay tuned!
• Noel Hibbard

I have about a 180deg deadzone. You can watch the wheel in the cockpit and it doesn’t move at all until I turn the wheel 90deg off center. This sim is useless to me right now. It is impossible to drive this way. I drive better on the keyboard right now. Seriously. I suspect it has to do with having two input devices. My pedals are on a Leo USB controller with a Loadcell break pedal. I would love to know if anyone else has had luck with this sim with multiple input devices.

  • Noel Hibbard

Cool, Ian confirmed that is was the gamepad detection code that was flagging my Leo controller as a gamepad. He said they are just going to rip that code out and it will be in the new build on Friday. Wahoo!!

Got my 25 euros licence… even if I can’t try now (changing/upgrading my computer due to a big HD crash), is there a video replay feature in this alpha? is it a feature on your list of “to-do” things? a TV track replay ( I must admit Gran Turismo 5 is the reference in the matter) would be amazing.

It’s not so much being a beta tester, it’s being an investor, and getting to have input on how the game is shaped into a final product.

Being able to help them fix bugs is a bonus 馃槢

  • Damon Clewlow

Have to be honest, even though my PC struggles running this – with everything whacked up it’s an incredibly pretty sim – perhaps the best looking i’ve ever seen. The reflections, lighting, sutble use of post-processing, awesome environmental effects, visible naturally-moving suspension components, wingmirror flex and vibration and other elements on and inside the car shaking about, make it just a lovely place to be 馃檪

Aside from some weird FFB, early production audio, and a few physics issues, this C.A.R.S thing is looking pretty damn interesting.

    And it’s only just started!

  • Firestarter

Damon: What PC specs do u have? And yes the graphics are much better then their previous work, and finally they don`t overdo the postprocessing as they have used to in my opinion. This is a very promising start.

  • Damon Clewlow

    Core2Duo e6750 OC’d to 3.2ghz
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 1gb
    3Gb Corsair XMS2 RAM
    ASUS P5K Mobo

If I want to set anything like a decent lap I have to run the game pretty much minimal settings – But if I just want to perve over the eye-candy I put up with around 8fps and drive very slowly 馃槢

  • Damon Clewlow

    Sorry, brain-fart. It’s a 4870 512mb GPU.

Upgrading around Christmas though, can’t wait!

  • JohnSc

Handling needs to be improved. I really liked what i see so far, but control it’s still so similar to Shift series. Input lag and slow response.

  • Bernd

Hello, just tried the game. I am using a 1280×1024 screen resolution and I get an out of range error message by my screen. Does anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance!

  • F1Racer

Ross:   I get very slight lag which I notice if I turn my wheel quickly.  Its a GT3RS V2.0

Someone mentioned that turning some gfx options down to low helped them with the lag but I haven’t tried that so far and am running the sim maxxed out.    It’s not severe enough for me do anything about it.
Just finding it overly sensitive after about 30degrees of input.

+1…Gran Turismo 5 is definately the reference when it comes to fantastic looking replays

  • Jonney Richy

Purchased teh Team member level and man i love it. its great. better then shift at this early stage. GT5 or forza 4 cant compete with THIS build imo.

I do have a tiny small issue, i get framerate drops when i drive near the starting line/pits,garages area of the track but besides that, i get a solid 60fps. still tweaking my wheel for it. couldnt try the ffb as my wife kept moaning how loud it is on my g25 wheel lol but so far graphics are superb. i love how the F1 cars can roll and have gravety. sensational stuff. Thanks SMS

  • Jonney Richy

how did u bring that up?

  • pastor ted haggard

Steering input lag with g25. And no, not really a visual thing (although it is still very slightly more delayed than it should be). The car just doesnt respond immediately to your input – it feels very similar to shift 2 in that respect (but at least without the god awful floaty physics)  with iracing, rfactor, gtr, gtr2, or any other simbin game it responds immediately to your input. Immediately. No second guessing what the front end might do.    epic fail. graphics are great. force feedback seems okay (but missing weight transfer). sounds are good. But input lag makes it unplayable – its as if vsync is on (and yes i did check, both with and without).   i mean i just dont get it. surely. Surely the developers have played those other games. Surely they know theres an issue with the responsiveness of the steering and how it plays with an ffb wheel.

  • Captain Underpants

For an alleged ‘pastor’, you sure are an unforgiving bastard. You do realise this isn’t the final game, don’t you?

  • Ricoo

Pastor. I have no input lag in Shift 2. Maybe it is your PC that has a problem…

  • shum94

    AAA Physics xD

  • NombreyApellido

Ouch! That was just painful to watch!  >:o  Big mouth but zero skill, uh? Also: you better start saving for a proper controller…

  • Wally Masterson

So what?  The game’s out there for feedback, and this is feedback.

  • Wally Masterson

Unless you are training to race on the real track, then who really cares if a track is laser-scanned to the nearest millimetre or not?  The goal of sim racing is to beat other drivers, on that track.

  • Nathan Robinson

physics have nothing to do with being able to race with a gamepad. I know a few people at RD that use gamepads for rfactor on the endurance mode and no one is calling those physics arcadey. Besides, if thats how you roll with a gamepad, i dont want to be on track with you at all.

  • shum94

bla bla bla learn to read. Keyboard control not gamepad. I see better lines took in my laps using a keyboard than most people’s videos we saw using a wheel.

It should impossible with proper physics to be able to do such agressive time attack with a keyboard controller and no aids.

  • Marcelo Amaral

you clearly never raced a laser scanned track! you get unparalalled immersion which makes non-scanned tracks loook ridiculous and unrealistic!

  • Silly(c)One

lol, you’re a real piece of work !

    kudos

  • rusty

the reason you feel more control when switching to nosecam etc is the 10-20% jump in frame rates i noticed with fraps. this has a big impact on wheel ffb. give it a shot

  • Captain Underpants

LOL. Even if that was constructive feedback, which it wasn’t, this is hardly the place for it. I’m pretty sure SMS has a forum set up specifically for that. But hey, if it helps the good ‘pastor’ feel good about himself, more power to him.

  • BSR-WiX

If this would become Modding able in the future , it could be a long term winner. However, the subject seems to be undocumented. I can understand modding will always be a debated yes or no choice, but for a project that is supposed to be geberated with community support and input, it should be one of the topics.  Lets hope for the best.

  • Jux

In Shift 2 I had the lag. It was horrible. Hope they get rid of it in Cars.

  • raven

No videos from the F77 so far? Ok, here is one 馃檪

  • pastor ted haggard

try jumping onto rfactor, iracing, any simbin game, and you’ll notice the difference immediately.
the game does not respond properly to steering input and makes it impossible to be precise.

and no its not my pc, i7 950, 6 gig ram, gtx 570.

and it is good feedback – because as i said in my post – surely they’ve played all the other sim games. aren’t these the guys that made gtr 2? they need to fundamentally change the controlling system to reflect todays proper sims,  before doing Anything else. At the moment, it seems like the same controlling system from Shift 2, without the floaty physics.

  • JohnSc

Totally agree. We had this “input lag” (call whatever you want) in Shift 1 and 2 and we have it in CARS. I think too that they make a step up in physics, but handling it’s still weird and have a slow response to your input; i tried Wheel, gamepad and keyboard, change graphics options…and it’s the same. Same in Shift 1 and 2. In Rfactor, LFS, RACE, GTR, Iracing. Netkar, F1 Challenge, Gp Legends…in all of those games I haVe a immediatly response to my input. And all the people on my communyty who have played Shift series and buyed CARS first build thinks absolutly the same. I have confidence that they will listen to the people, with this problem removed, it can be a SUPER simulator…

  • WiZPER

SMS is the guys from the late Blimey!, yes. And they did assist Simbin in MODIFYING the gmotor2 from ISI for GTR2, but it was never a scratch-build sim.

  • Ricoo

I insist for me there is no input lag in Shift 2.

Maybe there is a lag between input and the wheel on screen but that is not an input lag.

I played shift 2 around 60 hours so I would have noticed it…
