WRC 3 – Demo Available

Black Bean & Milestone have released a demo version of their WRC 3 title that is available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The demo is quite rich in content as it features Sebastien Loeb’s Citroen DS3 WRC that can be driven at the Rally Espana. Furthermore, players can sample the first stage of the “Road to Glory” career mode in the Ford Focus WRC.

Playstation 3 users can download the demo now off the Playstation Store, the Xbox 360 demo version will be released on Friday. Unfortunately, Black Bean seems to have no plans for a PC demo version, forcing PC users to wait until the title’s release on October 12th.

Make sure to share your impressions in the comments after giving the demo a try!

I guess one can only draw certain conclusions if a PC demo is not forthcoming. The amount of car roll in corners looks excessive to me and, alas, Black Bean and Milestone apparently aren’t going to change my mind. Oh well, yet more money saved :-)

When companies don’t release a demo, that’s when the torrent system is useful to try before I buy. Saved some $ on crappy titles for sure (like Tow Truck simulator that has 30+ bugs). And I’ve helped support companies that didn’t provide a demo (or a way to try) yet had good content after I did test it.

    Great engine sounds… NOT..!!

Sounds terrible. And no demo for PC? I won’t be buying this until someone convinces me it’s worth it.

No demo for the PC ! Then they complain about piracy. If people had a PC demo then some might decide it’s not for them and just not bother instead of pirating it to find out.
Us PC users spend so much more on hardware to play games like this and we just get treated like lower lifeforms.

    *Reads the title: YAY!!

No demo is a disappointment, but I can’t condone stealing a persons work.

But for Black Beans we are! Majority of simracers are PC gamers. The only way to get money from us is to trick us to buy it – showing nice videos and screenshots for example. One just does not release a demo, if one is ashamed of the product.

I have no interest in this title. After seeing videos of how the cars are glued to the road and pivoting on the front wheels it doesnt appeal to me.

There will be a PC Demo

Most likely the demo for PC was tactical because PC users are far more vocal when the driving experience is a bit lacking.

Played the PS3 demo last night and loved it. There again I like racing games and dont care if they are sim or arcade. This is far superior to WRC 1 and 2 but there again that wouldnt take much doing! The stages looked nice as did the cars and the physics felt good fun and alot more real than some rally games. To be honest im very surprised as Blackbeans previous efforts were terrible. Will definatley be buying the PS3 version when it comes out. PC for Sims, PS3 for fun.

Why do they even bother making this tripe???

    exactly as me^^

I dont see the problem with the engine sounds, they are quite good, only they are setup a bit wrong. imo the tire slip, collisions is way too loud. The pacenotes sound pretty good too, they really sound like they are spoken by someone sitting next to you in the car, also the pacenotes are really advanced and describe the surroundings very well.

To be honest I tried this on the PS3 and it was a lot better that previous versions which were unlawful tripe! So its not brilliant.
Main issue is viewpoint and change view, for some reason to play behind the car as I normally do on rally games, so you see a little higher and above the terrain, in this game the camera is mounted sort of 5 0 clock, so it is not directly behind the car?
No isea why they would do this, it forces you to use in car view or bonnet which is fine, but why have a chase view that is not behind the car, very stupid unless its a pre release bug.

And how many people download a game from Torrent, try it, and then go buy to be legit? Approximately zero. Well maybe 0.002% :)

Well the first stage is asphalt + gravel. The other stage is pure asphalt I think but on the same set-up (same country, Spain). With the set-up accessable (it either isn’t in demo or I’m blind) I can imagine it will get a bit better. Front end is too spongy for pure asphalt.

Curious to see if they bothered to replicate the stages via GPS as in WRC2 they were really off (the ones i know – in Portugal – that is).

Also, speaking of spending entirely too much money on gaming hardware, I’ll be buying some soon, I wish I could demo the build before I purchase to see if it runs as good as I’d like. I’ll have to buy entirely from reviews, advice and recommendations. Shame there’s no way to pirate a MB, processor and GFX card, eh. lol

At least it looks like they have a cockpit view!

Is the PS3 demo available in north america? it doesn’t show up for me.

  • 3sixty

what a great wrc game this one is, congratulations to the amkers!

No, but all you really need to open a European PS3 account is to guess a zip code in London…

It’s really quite fun, IMHO. Took me a couple of hours to get a really clean run through La Mussera (PS3, DFGT), which is as it should be. Youtube linked below and apologies for the crappy vid capture quality:

They have done a lot of work on the menu system. It’s super easy to get into game play and the only time it really slows down is the actual loading of the stage. If you want to retry the stage, you can restart just about as fast as you can click through the menus. The menu system seems to imply that you’ll be able to play through a career kind of thing, but alas, it also looks like there’s a bunch of Dirt-like challenges to get to the “Ultimate Showdown” driving challenge. At least they’re confined to their own separate submenu so I suppose you can ignore them if you want.

Physics are pretty good. The car seems to have good weight and getting a rear wheel off on sand actually causes traction and control issues like it should. Wheel feedback for handling is quite good. I see some limited control for setup—more than Dirt, less than GT5 it looks like—but it was disabled in the demo.

Damage is laughable compared to RBR—even when it’s cranked all the way up to Heavy. Suppose that’s to be expected, alas. I finally got first place with no assists in the demo, but looking at the replay is was sooo messy, and in RBR I would have holed the radiator within about 45 seconds of starting, from all the posts I mowed down inside turns.

Wheel feedback on dirt roads isn’t great, much like the original WRC. This may be a product of my wheel model—a Logitech DFGT, but basically, there’s no “small bump” texturing to the road like there is in RBR or GT5 (Dirt 3 is pretty bad too though). You can feel when you hit a big bump (barely), but otherwise it feels like driving on pavement, with no extra road vibration transitioning from tarmac to dirt.

Graphics are decent enough—not great but decent—and they have really nice rewind/ffw control on the replays. Their in-cockpit “apex cam” or whatever they are calling it is GREAT! It really works well to keep you “looking” towards the turn so you never feel like you can’t see the road when you’re mid-turn.

Copilot makes good calls and you can adjust them to be early enough to be of use.

So in summary, my two minor complaints so far are bump feedback on the dirt roads and the fact that even when you choose cockpit view, the damn “start cam” keeps you outside the car until the green light. Overall though, I’ve had a lot of fun with it so far and I’m keeping my $75-ish preorder from the UK in place.
