World Rally Championship 3 – SRT Video Review

Back in October, Black Bean Games & Milestone released the third version of their World Rally Championship franchise.

The guys over at  InsideSimRacing.tv followed the development from the beginning and now that the title has been out for quite a while, the guys have published their in-depth video review you can watch below.

“We don’t give scores anymore, but if we had to give a score, it would be between a 6 and a 7.”

Btw, what’s the best way to get back into Richard Burns Rally these days? I have the game and all, but is there an easy one-step installer somewhere with all the patches and great mods? I would like to drive it again, but I don’t really want to go through a sketchy 12 steps installation process from a forum post. Hell, just finding the disc and installing it feels last century, I don’t even know if my dvd-drive is still operational.

I would suggest waiting for RSRBR 2013 to come out, then all you would need is to run the base install, and then main track/car packs. It really brings life back to RBR, and is well worth it :)

We should do a Kickstarter campaign to raise the money to buy the rights from SCi and then package all that into a free-to-play game on Steam. Who’s in?

It might be tricky I think even the publishers have lost track of who owns what exactly.

I like how you think ;)
    Let’s get things done !

If you’re just a game child….Pretty sure you aren’t understanding the clear distinction they made between little gameboy ratings and simulation ratings.

Obviously, the little gameboy ratings are directly targeted to you.

I believe you might have missed the joke ;)

Ah..hmph…perhaps. I too found it rather silly when they said they aren’t going to give numerical scores and then do just that.

Anyways, the best rally game release since RBR. We need a UI and fxaa patch, though. Also, sometimes it seems unnecessarily hard to oversteer rwd and rwd biased setups, like traction or stability control is always on. I expected them to mention that, yet they didn’t.

I had a lot of fun with the trial version, I am going to pick up a copy this week-end for sure.

It’s SRT, any “ratings” they give are pretty much meaningless anyways. Better someone with some credibility review it, then I’ll watch it.

I have a hard time disagreeing with that…

Anyways, after watching this video a put a little more thought into a few things that need to be mentioned.

    @ SRT
    1) Someone’s system is royally *ed. I see some insane input latency in several of those shots. I would consider that unacceptable and WRC3 does NOT do that on my system(s).

    2) Map loading times. Again, you need to fix your damn system before you start talking rubbish. I’ve yet to find one map that takes over 10 seconds to load WITHOUT using an SSD. All the data was pulled from a standard 7200 rpm hdd in my tests.

Now, on the a few more issues with the game that I expect we (speaking for modders) can probably fix or at least improve:

    1) Gravel sounds, certain crash noises and the sound you hear from bottoming out appear to not be using any sort of distance fade variable. They are often far too loud in relation to the other sounds which do fade with distance.

    2) There’s not enough ‘roughness’ in the ffb (maybe mentioned in the above video, though not clearly explained enough for me to be sure they are talking about the same thing). A real rally car steering wheel would pick up more of the surface texture, even on asphalt. Note: It’s possible my dated wheel doesn’t provide the ‘channel’/motor that those effects are being sent through.

I have been using the SweetFX shader suite to sharpen the everything (it is surprisingly effective) and to enable SMAA since the default fxaa implementation appears to be somewhat broken due to inexplicable occasional micro stutter/single frame vsync drop.

SCi has been bought by Eidos which have been aquired by Square Enix recently. Gamesplanet lists Eidos – SE as publisher http://uk.gamesplanet.com/buy-download-pc-games/Richard-Burns-Rally-235-39.html . So if those sources are true it would mean to deal with a publisher behemoth…
