Video of Marcus Grönholm Trying Richard Burns Rally

Yesterday, I posted a first story on two-time World Rally Champion trying Richard Burns Rally at the Monza Rally Show last weekend.

Now, a video of the event is available, showing the Finnish rally legend making his first steps in the world of virtual rallying. Several rally drivers tried their luck in the two simulators the Italian Richard Burns Rally community RBR-online.it provided, the former Peugeot & Ford works driver undoubtedly being the most prominent of all.

For crying out loud sort the camera focus out!

orubasarot: At first the whole thing looked like a disaster with sim nerds hoping to justify their hobby with how it applies to real racing experience…

LOL…love the sim nerds comment. Couldn’t help but feel the same watching the early video. As to the poor equipment – there is quality stuff out there, really no excuse to show up at an exhibition with cheap plastic junk.

Unless you spend a fortune for professional equipment, the build quality of sim hardware can be weak. I bet Marcus Grönholm wasn’t too impressed. Obviously, that handbrake is to blame in this case, but Logitech and Fanatec still need to step it up with their hardware.

CST Pedals are top quality. I own a set and they will not break! :-) Some of the expensive wheels and shifters would probably be fine, but the G25, G27, Fanatec stuff is a step up from the really cheap stuff, but far far away from real equipment.

Most people won’t pay for quality for their sim hobby.

Well that didn’t go to well did it!

Shows there is still a long way to go, although I’ve seen a video Soberg doing quite well, but not sure how much time he spent with it.

I’m sure with a more professional setup and more time Gronholm would do much better.

did they even test that handbrake themselves

also, why didnt they let him drive a real life course that he had probably driven himself.

It is a REAL track of Monza Rally Show, and Markus drove it the same day!

  • Jos

ups, lol, didnt know that :shame:

    He didn’t seem terribly impressed.

    “I need a co-driver.” LOL.

if you are going to give a professional driver a sim test you should make some effort and get him professional grade hardware, frex or something like that, not a cheap joystick as hand brake, there are another drivers and even teams that use simracing as a tool but they have quality hardware

  • Mitos

Marcus is cool guyhahahaha… funny video but I`d like to see Rossi in actionhahahaha…

Somehow, I doubt RBR-online.it would have the funds to be able to do that.

Why do people think Expensive is the best?
Sure CST is very good hardware but so is Logitech and Fanatec as well.
I know many professional simracing drivers that uses the G25 in racing for example.
Sure it is not high quality stuff, but at least Marcus tested, it is not about impressing him…

what an UTTER disaster for simracing.

what the hell were rbr it thinking????? Not using incar view (which would have immediately made it look more proffesional and sim like).
And not using a proper rally stage.

Whoever was holding the camera was a fu*king idiot as well – why would you just focus the camera on watching him play with the wheel, instead of watching what he can do in the sim?
    people are utter retards.

    “professional simracing drivers”
:sd: :sd: :sd: :sd: :sd: :sd:

If there’s a quote of the week prize, that must get it.

It’s a computer game. They expect fans of the racing game to be fans of the driver too, ergo, he is doing PR. This isn’t about the few sim racers that are deluded it’s real and were watching it expecting to see that.

Those guys just desperately need help.

This is no different, at all, than, say, Slash, or someone similar playing guitar hero for PR. If you’d watch that to see if Slash could play Paradise City, you’d be as dumb as expecting this guy to drive a particular course because he did it IRL.

That said, the guy seems a bit ham-fisted TBH. It’s fairly self-evident you don’t need to use large forces to press a button or pull a plastic lever in a game.
