This Week Inside Sim Racing – August 5th

The guys over at  InsideSimRacing.tv have released a new episode of This Week Inside Sim Racing, announcing several big changes that are in store for the show.

Darin & Shaun have decided to leave Los Angeles and move up north with their families to Washington. This brings a major change to the show as Jessica Lopez won’t be part of the regular hosts anymore. All the changes are explained in detail below as Jessica co-hosts alongside Darin for the last time.

Not sure what to say , i love the show i love Jess but do we going to miss her? truly yes i think , time will show.

Not a fan of project cars but that time lapse video looks incredible

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tiago-Guerreiro/1426133677 Tiago Guerreiro

27 min. of broadcast, more than 50% in ads…….

  • C4

No reason to watch this show anymore :(

  • Chris Allen

The way Fanatec/Thomas has acted towards ISR almost makes me not want to buy their product. And yes Jess will be missed, but its not a reason I watched. Maybe they could have Darin’s fiance (her sister) do a few episodes for a female break in there?

  • Chris Allen

Realistically, almost the entire show is an ad as they are reviewing products…but that’s fine by me that’s what I am here to see.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcus-Caton/647940120 Marcus Caton

Well this show is officially dead.
If they continue to boycott Fanatec and Darin insist on being a dBag then ya the show is dead.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcus-Caton/647940120 Marcus Caton

BTW why are they demanding a “Free” product be sent to them?
Who do they think they are that Fanatec needs to bend over backwards for them.
Buy it, review it, end of story.

  • Chris Allen

They are not demanding a free product. They answered questions as to why they are not reviewing fanatec, there is the reason. It costs $, didn’t they answer that as part of the reason they are leaving cali? It’s not like they have a money tree out front. Fanatec could send them one to review, then ask it be returned in a month, not hard for Fanatec and something they have done before. It was a review of Fanatec by ISR that originally led me to buy my first Fanatec!

  • daz

Do you think Fanatec have taken an anti-ISR stance, because Darin went to work for them, obviously had his differences with Thomas and duly left.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1711429307 Chris Wright

It’s really sad to read the negativity of comments so far in this thread, at a time when the ISR guys need our full support – something they’ve really earned over the five years we’ve been glued to their show.

I’d be the first to say that it’s not the show it once was, but that is really due to external factors and I certainly don’t blame Darin and Shaun. We can’t have it all ways. They need to get funding to keep on improving the show and, quite clearly, iRacing is the gorilla in the room in terms of being a uniquely wealthy sponsor in this hobby. No doubt they will have laid down certain rules about what is and isn’t acceptable coverage of their competitors, or maybe Shaun and Darin are simply nervous about losing what is, actually, an irreplaceable sponsor. Whatever the truth, there is not enough about the upcoming sims week on week, but that trend has reversed a little of late, so there must be hope. And as far as moving? well there are few places more expensive to live than California, hence few more places that cost more to run a weekly videocast. This could be a very positive move for the ISR audience!

The much talked about spat with Fanatec is, in the end, going to cost Fanatec more than it is ISR – there are other controllers out there. About time to kiss and make up, I’d say.

It’s very sad that we will be losing Jessica, who has bought a lot of glamor to the sim racing scene. It has been fun to watch her develop as a presenter, and I’m sure she’s destined for a great future. Fortunately, it seems, the show will still link up with her from time to time.

Good luck to Darin and Shaun on this move. Thanks for the first five years, here’s to the next five!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1711429307 Chris Wright

I don’t think it’s ever been truly explained, but in the end both the show and Fanatec would be better off burying their differences.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1711429307 Chris Wright

Ultimately there is a symbiotic relationship between specialty netcasters and niche product manufacturers. They both need each other. The netcaster needs the review content, while the manufacturer needs the reviews.

It also benefits the punter, as product quality is driven forward by the fear of a negative review.

One should always be more concerned with the products that are never reviewed. What is there to hide?

I love it how vr.net get credited when it comes to day by day sim news when bsimracing.com comes with the news first, more variety, and… and.. shows srt videos first than vr.net. Some times i see the same news here for 3 days in a row with no change.

    Case and Point: (08/7/12): http://www.bsimracing.com/2012/08/inside-simracing-wrc-3-by-milestone-first-look/

Are you 15 years old? The entire review industry does not work on bought products, you are talking out of your arse. They would review it and send it back, I’m sure, though a lot of companies when they have a good relationship just let them keep it. You state your opinion so brutally harsh, as if it was so factual when literally everything you said was made up in your head.

  • DDD II

I love bsim and check it and VR every day but VR has a way more active comment section. I am not a big poster myself but there are numerous bsim posts where I was alone in the comment section. I try and at least say thanks, especially for the real world race info bsim provides which is really nice on race weekends.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506411491 マリオ クリストファ

    I feel the same way!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

This is true, you always have to wonder what the real deal is when a reviewer says “They won’t, or are reluctant to send us the game”. We all do this when game demos never surface. 8 out of ten times you get the product home… and it’s crap lol

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the kind words. Comments on a website are a strange thing. Its very hard to get people to comment on something in most cases. I hear that allot from fellow webmasters. For some reason, people cant wait to comment on VR. That is basically a good thing, but sometimes it works the other way around.. Bsim has about 11.000 page views a day, but hardly any comments. Allot of sites seem the have the same situation going on. Its a Mystery… I guess Kudos to VR for its comment section.

  • Anonymous

A general rule is that only a tiny fraction of readers ever leaves comments – 95% of them don’t. If they would, comment sections everywhere would explode.

Just look at Youtube, a video with millions of views usually has a few thousand comments..that’s how it is.

VirtualR has almost five times time page views so there’s bound to be more comments :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Fanatec Thomas Jackermeier

Chris, by default we offer all major press contacts to tither get a loaner for a few weeks or buy the product with a big discount. We never forced them to pay in order to make a review.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Cooper/100001266321716 Jason Cooper

will miss Jess ,well don’t buy it if your that far up ISR your choice

  • http://www.facebook.com/Fanatec Thomas Jackermeier

We never said that we don’t send them anymore porducts. It was IS to announce several times that they don’t want to review our products anymore. I am not that keen to get a review from somebody who posts multiple negative comments based on equipment used purely for beta testing and unveiling secret products but we don’t even have such a request.

  • Anonymous

Was iRacing, tamiya sponsorship needed though? they were doing great before it.

their youtube page is close to 30,000 subscribers and approaching 13 million views (SRTmedia 7 million views), they would have gotten plenty of money from being youtube partner to continue the show without sponsorship, but instead it seems they tried to make this their full time job. (website, forum etc)

also look at the youtube channel views, the most viewed content is hardware reviews, rig building guide, reviews of new games etc.
this week in sim racing is barely getting 10K views….

good luck to them but in my opinion they took show in wrong direction away from what was working so well in the past.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Fanatec Thomas Jackermeier

Not sure if you really know enough to make such a comment. ;)
ISR is a great show and I did everything to avoid this situation. At the end of the day it takes two to co-operate and there is a limit to things you can tolerate.
To hire Darin was a clear mistake because it mixed up interests. But at that time it sounded like a good idea…
My door is always open and Darin knows that he can call me anytime if he really would want to.

  • DDD II

Thanks again to you and Montoya for the great sites you provide for us sim-racers. As I mentioned I absolutely love your informative real world race coverage posts on top of the sim-racing coverage. Thanks guys! Oh yeah, I will miss Jessica also :)

  • Anonymous

I’d say the two parties need to calm down, sit on 2 sides of a virtual table and calmly talk about what happened and what will they do next. I’m of course talking SRT and Fanatec. We all love the reviews on this show and we want to see the shiny new hardware from Fanatec given a proper rating. I’m personally few months away from my first purchase of a Fanatec Pedal set (Clubsport V2′s buying date homing in at mid January, around my B-Day :) ) and I’d love to see what they think about it, as if you have a centralized source of information and comparissons like SRT you can see if the product is really for you or maybe get something else :)

Anyway best of luck with moving boys and bye Jessica, hope your business goes well and to see you at E3 next year. Also early congrats on the 5 years of the show. It’s improving massively all the time and hope to see more of that when you move to Spokane :)

  • Anonymous

Why don’t you buy it “Dbag” and do a review. Every time I see you post, it’s negative about ISR. You hate them, so what, don’t watch and get a life.

  • Anonymous

    Then don’t watch

    then don’t watch.

I’d like to take a second thank both Bsim and VR for existing.
B-Sim/Wix isn’t missing out on anything much, of the 5% of comments, 2.8% are usually negative and argumentative, it’s the social internet – Those are the rules :)

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

Thomas, have you offered ISR a Loaner of the “finished” CSW yet? I don’t expect you to answer this confidential info, but If not, I think now is the time. Somebody has to offer the olive branch, we as consumers would appreciate as many opinions from people we know and trust as we can get. The higher the cost of the product, the more important this becomes to us.

Come on guys, if you both stretch a branch each, you won’t even have to touch hands lol

    Regards

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

Works both ways, if you don’t put the extra time in, you’re often late and then irrelevant. The amount of posts I’ve seen on the timeliness on their software reviews seems to indicate people want them sooner rather than later, not doing a full-time job means even more delays.

Those current subscriber and view stats only represent the effort that has gone into the show up to this point. Since the sponsorship the quality of the show has increased no end IMO, I think this would have taken much longer without it.

Personally I think the balance is good and can live with the ads. This show only had one advert break in 30mins. US TV has about 4x that ads, and even ads immediately before the end credits, now that’s over-kill.

  • Marcus Caton

A sexier comment area would help.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506411491 マリオ クリストファ

I love them both sites… The more viewing count in vr,net comes from SRT mentioning them once in a while.. bsr,com would be getting if not more views than this site if it also got mentioned one in a while during the show.

  • Chris Allen

Well great news, its official on both sides now, now Darin all you need to do is give them a call and we can see some future reviews I hope! ;)

  • Anonymous

What allot of sites without comments do is have friends or make comments themselves.

If you want to be less disingenuous with the users then simply ask a question after the artical and then have a discussion with people that do comment.

It only takes 30 or so noisy buggers to get a comment section active I think vast majority of VR comments are from the same 50-100 users.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1711429307 Chris Wright

The ads I can live with. What they need to ensure is that they remain balanced and cover the hobby as a whole, without appearing to be an iRacing mouthpiece.

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

Yeh, I agree with that, the last few shows have had very little iracing coverage percentage. It’s mostly league stuff they were reporting on in the past. To be honest, I don’t mind hearing how the iR aliens are performing, despite not being a member. When it comes to race reporting Iracing is like the Nascar & F1 of sim racing when it comes to the big names in this “E-sport” segment.

  • Anonymous

Darin wouldn’t do that but Shaun would! Strangely enough Darin has been saying in the last couple of shows that the T500 is the best sim wheel he ever used. But a few months ago I remember he said the Fanatec CSW was definitely the best ever wheel (beta version). Not sure which Darin to believe although at the time he was working for Fanatec and these days Thrustmasters sponsor them.

  • Anonymous

The most bold comments are normally the ones which will be discussed not even the news in itself. Most of the forums will ban the guy or delete his comment in a way not having moderators and not needing to register for commenting early on really helped VR and having people like me posting also help Rob a lot :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1395946501 Darin Gangi

Hey guys, thanks for all the cool comments about our move and the show.

To Chris Allen, that’s not Jessica’s sister and she’s not going to host the show ;-) To you and Chris Wright, thanks for the support !

To Wix and the comments about BSim, you guys are right and we should have mentioned them as well in those comments. I check BSim myself daily and feel it’s one of the best sim racing blogs around. I will make up for it later. Thanks for
supporting us Wix and thanks to Montoya as well.

Marcus, Marcus, Marcus… you really have it out for me man. Not sure what I did for you to come here calling me names. I considered you a friend at one time. I
believe in communication and I apologize if you felt I crossed you some how.

re. Thomas / Fanatec. Like I said on the show, we don’t see eye to eye and the same goes with his comments here. Neither Shaun or myself are happy about the situation and of course it’s effected our views. Beyond that, I’m not going to address the Fanatec situation any longer as I said the last I am going to say about it on this show.

@mfcfan We’re a You Tube partner and not sure where you get your statistics from but they don’t pay much at all.

In regards to advertising in general, we’re blessed to have companies that want to support our show and promote their products. Without them, we would have disappeared a long time ago. I know some of you would have liked that, but we’re not going anywhere for a long time ;-) We said goodbye to the one advertiser we had that tried to stop us from covering other titles and from saying what we want. None of our current or future advertisers will influence our reviews and they don’t now.

Jess was a lot of fun to work with and she will be missed big time. If you check the percentage of shows of late, she was in maybe 25% of them. She has
been transitioning herself off for a long time. We’ll keep you guys posted when we here from her.

Thanks for watching everyone and supporting our show.

  • Chris Allen

    True!!

Darin Thanks for the comment… for the future a little advice… If you respond to trolling, you are only feeding trolls. I’m not saying don’t answer questions that are not positive about your show, but I know you know the fine line between constructive criticism and trolling. I am sorry to say this about @facebook-647940120:disqus (cuz I don’t know the guy) but looking at all he has post on this site I can only say with all due respect that he in fact is a troll. Don’t wan’t to sound like a troll? state your concerns or comments diplomatically. Last, all those comments about Jessica, well.. you know they were bound to happen since the moment you saw her and realized she was going to be on the internet. One thing about her that I really loved is that you could see it in her eyes that she was not just hosting a show, but that she fell in love with what she was doing. If you would had recruited a dumb bimbo with no passion, trust me… none of the audience would had been telling about how fine she is but that you immediately get rid of her. She wasn’t perfect as she looked nervous some times, but she is to this show what jelly is to a peanut butter sandwich. The perfect match.

Btw. There was a kid whom at some point was reviewing stuff and mods in your show. He should be back.

    Keep up the awesome work!!!

Blessings to you and Shaun and to Jessica on her future endeavors.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Fanatec Thomas Jackermeier

    Darin,
if you believe in communication then you are welcome to talk to me directly.
The funny thing is that there is no “situation”. Since you announced that you don’t want to review our products anymore or started to complain that we would not send something to you, we did not give out any units to the press. You will hardly find a review of the CSW from any media contact out ther as we simpy wait until we have enough products to ship and we certainly have enough demand at the moment.
I know that you can be a person to come along well with and although you might think different: I am not your enemy and never was
We don’t need to discuss this in public. You have my number or we can meet in GamesCom. There are several great new racing titles at the show so come over to cologne.
But this thread is about ISR so I will add my best wishes for your show and good luck with your new living environment.

  • Anonymous

sure he isn’t feeding the trolls and I know that because he didn’t comment on my earlier post which goes…
“Strangely enough Darin has been saying in the last couple of shows that the T500 is the best sim wheel he ever used. But a few months ago I remember he said the Fanatec CSW was definitely the best ever wheel (beta version). Not sure which Darin to believe although at the time he was working for Fanatec and these days Thrustmaster sponsor them.”

Really nice show. Just got a chance to watch it now.
Gonna miss Jessica but wish the guys best of luck with the new move to Spokane which looks like a really great place.

    Looking fwd to future eps.

  • Anonymous

For me that is just common sense. nothing more.

In public you are not suppose to go against your own employer. That is a rule for almost everybody in their own private lives, and even more so in a marketing environment

Lets stay serious. The majority in here are grownups, and we are supposed to be rational, and should know how the world works.

Imagine that the employees of Thrustmaster would start to hail Fanatec in public…

I would defend and hail my employer any day. Most of us will never slap the hand that feeds us.

Lik i said, common sense.Nothing more.

I would defiantly like more comments on Bsim, but not just for the sake of it. I used to be on the original RSC every day back in the years and its unbelievable how much i learned from comments. So if people comment out of interest, then its a beautiful thing.

Lets face it, these days there is not much to learn from the average ” this sucks” and ” you are a wanker” comment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MartinWA Marto Davis

As a viewer from day dot, I would like to wish ISR all the best for the move and look forward in seeing how the show develops for the near future.

Darin, Shaun keep at it, I know how difficult it can be to somehow please everyone especially a broad spectrum of Sim Racing but at least you’re still here doing it with bucket loads of enthusiasm.

For me it’s shows like ISR and websites like Virtualr that helps keep the fire in the belly and race….it’s a shame that sometimes some people forget that’s what we are here to do.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506411491 マリオ クリストファ

That’s it.. you both go to GamesCom and shake hands and continue the awesome friendly partnership there once was before working together at Fanatec. We would love to see your products at GamesCom being tried out by Darin and Shaun in an ISR video. “)

  • Eugene_Mickleburger

Long may it continue. Love the reviews. They are done very proffessionally.
But where is the latest review on here for Test Drive Ferrari? I know it was panned a little but eh, where is it? VR deserves to read all about it.

  • Eugene_Mickleburger

No one can answer? No review? Strange F1racer, do you know why not?
