The Most Impressive Sim Setup Ever? – Video

What do you get when you combine a 1080p projector, a high-tech steering wheel & pedals and a correctly-set FOV? One of the best sim racing setups ever!

RemcoHitman has uploaded the following video to Youtube, showing a lap on the Nordschleife in the Mclaren M23 in rFactor.

Remco uses a high-end Leo Bodnar force feedback wheel and a load cell brake pedal kit, the 1080P projector is an Optoma HD800x.

The FOV is set at 55, creating a very realistic driving experience as Remco pushes the Mclaren through the green hell.

    amazing!

I dunno about the most impressive ever, but that’s pretty good.  I’ve considered going the projector route with a similar setup, but that would require devoting a significant space for just sims, which I don’t really have in an appropriate place.

I’m still waiting on the VR headsets to get where they ought to.  They’ve been promised forever, but what’s available has always fallen short usually in terms of resolution.  I suspect, though, that with the boom in smartphones and such, it won’t be too long before there are LCDs in an appropriate size and resolution.  A screen that covers all, or at least most of, your field of view would need a pretty significant resolution… maybe 4K, and would have to be small enough so you could mount two of them in a visor… maybe 2 inches.  So, that’s a ways off, but given the specsmanship in smartphones, it wouldn’t surprise me if something acceptable came around in the next few years.

Anyways, if they could do that with good head-tracking (which we pretty much already have), that could be ridiculously awesome.

    Yeah…..That’s pretty damn cool.

…and here we were thinking we needed to build racing rigs to enhance the sim experience when all along our rigs were built into each and every car we drive. We just needed to know how to make it look this cool. Very well done.

not sure about projector but everyone has their own personal preference..

anyways to me that Leo Bodnar wheel is the most interesting piece.

there was talk while back (nogrip?) that Todd Cannon would be producing Leo’s wheel….500watt motor and 15NM of torque! with insanely high resolution.

not sure what has happened since maybe cost to mass produce is too high probably $2+ K

  • Dani .

Needs rear proyector upgrade, but its near perfect like this. And for my personal view >50 fov, and nearest camera.

Yes, VR headset is the way to go. Like you said, high dev small screens were everywhere now with the boom of android smart phones

     Vr Headsets will make using Keyboards/Button Boxes slightly difficult to use (-;

    Excellent stuff

It looks like there is too much brightness and the colours are a bit washed out

    Love it!

A well positioned screen is the most underrated feature of racing simulators these days.

  • sargentjack86

What an amazing set up. You could really believe you are actually in the car. Nice work.

There is NO WAY ON EARTH…..that i would trade my cockpit for this one…..even with a CNC motor for a wheel built by Mr. FFB himself.
im never impressed with projectors….they alway looks dull compared to my triple screen setup…..maybe its just the video capturing that makes it “dull”?

    My $.02

I’ve seen much better rigs than this one.

I’m sure it’s immersive, but seeing the dials projected on your hands when you turn the wheel, kinda ruins it for me

  • Big Ron

Cool stuff. Looks like it is a lot fun to play.

I’m pretty sure if he turns his lights down and puts headphones on it would be far more immersive than any of our ‘Normal’ setups.

OMG.  The simwheel that is!  Just look at the power and ACCURACY of it.  It has no (seemingly) delayed or gimmicky effects compared to some of the other respected and good FFB wheels out on the market.  Now, where to get this wheel is the question.  Yes, I have been waiting for Todd Cannon’s CST FFB  wheel, made in conjuction with Leo Bodnar (Mr. FFB), for the last couple of years.

As for the sim rig?  No opinion because it must be experienced in real life to fully experience it’s reputed amazingly immersive drivem, I am sure.  Just really think about it. If Remco went to the work and expense of this wheel and that shifter, don’t you think he put together what is the best (for him), both in product(s) and what really matters when you are doing it in person (not watching a youtube video of it)…the IMMERSION?!  Besides, this video doesn’t show enough of what this rig is all about, what went into it and why, to give a critique of.  It does show a person’s love and passion for sim racing.  We will all hopefully benefit somehow (trickle down of ideas and product development).  So a big thank you for this!

That Leo Bodnar wheel, Where can I get it ?!

  • Remco Hitman

You can’t really do a DLP projector justice with a video, cameras seem intent on favouring one part of the colour wheel. And don’t forget I turned up the lights a bit to better show what I’m doing at the controls; otherwise I would just be a black silhouette!
That’s also why the colours seem oversaturated, the camera picks a low level white balance and because of that the intensity of the colours is overexaggerated while the overall image quality seems bland.

Apprently you can negate this by projecting from behind the screen, but the way Remco has his full rig built doesn’t allow it, so he prefers this way instead.

Honestly for me, a triple projected setup from behind and I would be in sim heaven, either that or Triple 3D monitors.

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

he says it looks better in person, partly because of the DLP projector/camera combo, and partly because of the way he set up the lighting to film off-screen.

That’s true, but you don’t really need keyboards or button boxes much when you’re actually driving. They’re also usually set up so that you can look downward over your nose and see your hands (ie, they don’t totally block up your vision, and there are also various other possible tricks like reflecting the images onto partially silvered mirrors that allow you to focus beyond the virtual image to see through the headset).

Of course, we can improve on that though.  Instead of just head tracking, we’ll do hand tracking as well.  Just align the virtual buttons with your real ones and Bob’s your uncle.  Since we’re talking down the road anyways, it’s definitely a technical possibility and not too far fetched really.  It would be possible today, just very expensive.

Imagine that you could order a replica cockpit that was totally nonfunctional, just a bit of plastic in the *shape* of the cockpit, so it wouldn’t cost that much.  Any buttons or knobs wouldn’t even have to actually be connected to anything, as their function could all just be optically recognized, or inferred from your hand movements.  That’s probably pushing it for a racing sim, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see something like that one day for flight sims given how ridiculous some of those setups get today.  With everything positioned right, and the sort of graphics they’d likely have by then, that could be ridiculously immersive… almost perfect, except for the g-force and danger.

Ugh, that’s so sick. How much do you think this rig setup is? including the wheel… 8,000 us dollars? 10,000 us dollars? Im jealous LOL

Looks great, and a respectable time as well 6:36 is not to be sneezed at. My best is a 6:44 in a C9 Sauber with a small reserve held back to ensure the next lap can still occur (ie no broken bits).

No motion rig in sight, just a projector & a big screen is all any of us need to be there too.

  • jim pappas

Thanks Justin!Do you know where can we find the physics file?

  • Remco Hitman

PC, projector and screen are under €2000 together so it’s not as bad as you might think :p

  • Remco Hitman

Quite right! I’m down to 6:28 now by the way :)

  • Remco Hitman

Here’s what it looks like at 3 x 16:9 screens. ‘Different’.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=645597761 Sam Binfield

Its niels, so chances are he just made the physics to have fun with, which means they won’t ever see the light of day. Niels is pretty much the biggest tease in simracing :p

  • jim pappas

     Thnks Sam!

  • Anonymous

    you can’t

todd cannon was mentioned as someone that would sell it would be high cost probably few thousand dollars….but nobody is saying nothing about it anymore…

Remco is ignoring any questions about it. so…

  • Remco Hitman

Here is the part of the setup you didn’t get to see in this video ;)

    Very well done! +++++

VR headsets are not ready, tech wise, far too much lag.
But John Carmack is working on it.
    Not for 2012 though.

    Remco, very nice rig !

What’s the distance between the projector and the screen ?
