Supercar Challenge – Nürburgring Lap

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 in

Following the Aston Martin DBR9 around Spa Francorchamps, a new Supercar Challenge video takes us around the Nürburgring Grand Prix track in a Mclaren F1. While the Aston Martin video managed to impress with good graphics and sounds, this video shows heavy inaccuracies in terms of track modelling as some corners are completely off.

Supercar Challenge will include over 40 cars that can be raced on over 20 tracks, the car selection is mainly made up of road-going sports cars but also includes race cars like the Corvette C6.R and the Aston Martin DBR9.

Now I don’t wanna sound like a complete asshat, but the track modelling in that was pretty dire, most of the tracks wasn’t that recognisable as the Nürburgring, barriers and grass were all in the wrong places. And the shift sounds were a bit…well, crap.

Siggs… You don’t sound like an asshat. Always one of the most reasonable and well argumented commenters here on VirtualR.

Even though I haven’t raced that much on the Ring, it’s pretty obvious that there are many errors in this version – just look at the first hairpin.

And what’s up with the shifting sounds coming much sooner than the actual animated shift??

I don’t really know whether or not to be positive about this game. I just hope that all the 40 car models and 20 tracks won’t go to waste in an awful, undrivable game.

The track layout looks pretty much spot on, I’d give it a 95% accuracy rating. The surrounding area is not and this was a publisher/developer decision.

    And I quote:

“Whilst we try to make the race track itself as accurate as possible, sometimes we use creative license to improve the look of the circuits.

The game looks promising and if you follow the trail of this video back to Youtube.com, there is a Ferrari Enzo video at SPA — for the lazy people

    here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4QhHcNR8hE

What is up with the shifting sounds? vrooom THUD vrooom THUD…really odd.

    navalhawkeye,

these videos are of the beta version that is currently taking place, so it’s not final, these audio samples could, and may I add should be replaced for the retail version.

LOL. The shifts sound like someone’s chopping the meat

  7. Siggs

Why, thanks for the compliment Rasmus

As Regards to what JimmytheFox said, I admittedly had not seen the comment about changing the look of the tracks. despite this, the layout still seems a tad off to me. In fact, after looking at video’s from the real track, I can say the first 2 corners are significantly off, the main thing being that they’re wider in track surface, and by far not as tight as the real ones.

Well, I’m not sure I’ll ever play this game simply due to the fact I don’t own a PS3, but the track definitely looks way off at times.

I remember watching the track videos on the Ferrari Challenge website back when that game came out, thinking how odd the tracks looked then too(and I don’t mean the scenery).

  9. BSR-WiX

The shifting sounds are actually sounding like the backshifts of a Lambo GT3.
As far as track accuracy, i dont think this would matter. the focus will without a doubt be Arcade. I do not mean that in the negative way, because i do understand thats where the commercial market is on the PS3. Are arcade racers really going to care if the track is spot on or not ? do they know how the track is spot on ? so in the end of the day , we should value it for what it is. a Nice looking arcade racer.

jesus all i can see is complaining are you Polish goddamn the game looks and sound AWESOME for me the grass here the grass there WTF ru all talking about ?!

the one thing i dont like is to slow moving hands while shifting the rest AWESOME

    jesus christ ………….

maxs the comment section exists for for a reason its not there just for OMG THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER etc…..

-the sounds are really horrendous and the track is lacking accuracy but like its been said since its for console the track layout wont matter much.

well, it looks like Mclaren F1 used DBR9 sound .. I think this will be changed soon.

as for the upshift/downshift sound. ITS REALLY ANNOYING! thats why I hated Ferrari Challenge .. Ive never heard this sound in real life video or any other racing game its just really annoying ” vroooooom DOPOP (chopping meat) then vreeooom (the engine goes slowly to the next rpm) sounds like misshifting .. idk

Elevaton changes dont look good, circuit looks flatter than we’re used to.

guys it looks great for a console game.. lets not forget that.. Hopefully it will get good reviews and good advertising to support it.. If it becomes popular, it might fuel the console game makers more towards realistic sims and away from arcade-like racers. I already got a few friends looking forward to the next Need For speed game, yet they wont pick up smaller titles like ferrari challange because those games dont get enough credit/reviews/buzz around them.

The graphics look pretty good, the driving dynamics look good, but what’s up with the slow shift animation? And the weird revs during the shift… it’s like the ignition kill isn’t working.

I’d say… it needs a little bit of work yet.

  16. ForzaBarca88

Assuming this is for the ps3, this has to be a simulation right? Its gonna gonna be tough for it to compete with GT5 if its just gonna try to balance realism with arcade elements. And if this is meant to be a simulation then they’ve got plenty of work to do, especially that track….

BTW, is it just me or do the graphics look rFactor-ish?

Had to signup-to leave a comment, i liked the spa video and was really impressed with the feel of the track however this video just left me dissapointed. I don’t really care whats on the side of the track the major thing for me, wether arcade or sim is that if they put a real world track in the gamne the layout & elevation should be accurate. Which sadly this is not, I’ve driven the track in my MINI and the two things that standout to me is the first corner elevation & tightness, turn 5’s drop in elevation & then the climb up to the chicane just before the last corner. I don’t think they could’ve got the layout more wrong.

You can’t put laguna seca in a game and then flatten out the cork screw to ‘balance gameplay’. Sort it out guys!

  18. ScHiRoCk

Lol, they give a nice example what they can do with spa and with this track they just ruine it °_°

Also gearshifting, the guy in the car is moving his arm after the gear changing…

Does not look good to me…

I don’t know what kind of creative license they are using, but it seems more like a licensing issue.
Somewhat as ISI’s incorrectly named tracks with accurate layouts, but in this game the opposite – a fantasy track with an accurate name.

Aside from that, the game looks good. If they fix and improve the Ferrari Challenge engine, on which this is based, SCC could be a very fun racing game.

I really dont see any wild inaccuracies with the corners, the first looks odd, possibly a little narrow. What they have done is bring the barriers on the left and the runoff very close to the track. This is I think deliberate because if you dont know the track like the back of your own hand (most PS3 gamers I expect) Its very easy to become unsighted about where the corner apex is because of all the tarmac on the left & ahead.

The rest of the track seems pretty good, lots of trees & other scenery to make it look nice, nothing wrong with that.

ISI made a couple of tracks that were pretty wrong, Barcelona & shanghi I think had some issues with elevations.

As for this game tho, it looks promising with gentle throttle application and corrective steering needed as well as breaking for corners! I will have to recommend it to my console playing friends.

it looks and sounds. like a load of sh*t.

so. another game made for teh n00b console gamers.

You managed to deduce all of that from a pootube vid

At least the inaccuracies are deliberate, creatively driven and openly admitted, and not just due to poor production.

You have to have respect for them on that!

It’s 2009, not 1999, in the next 12 months you’ll see GT5, Forza 3, NFS Shift, Supercar Challenge, Superstars V8, Codemasters F1 and Race Pro and it’s sequels.

As for track accuracy, sure it doesn’t look quite as good as Spa (which looked great), then again how many PC tracks are truely accurate? If you want perfect tracks wait for GT5, nothing will come close.

‘it looks and sounds. like a load of sh*t.
so. another game made for teh n00b console gamers.’

This is a Beta, the sounds are from the DBR9 and are accurate, I’m really not sure what your problem is with the graphics either, considering how outdated most PC sims look.

Do you think it’s just a coincidence any story about a console sim is followed by dozens of comments scrutinizing every aspect, far more than any PC sim. Look at the early reaction to NFS Shift, despite knowing the pedigree of the team behind the game.

I’ll predict now the first GT5 footage, hopefully from E3, will see a record number of comments.

  26. mbeast

I would hazard a guess that the sound delay in shifting is simply the youtube video being out of sync, otherwise it is very odd indeed. Certainly looks nice though, and it seems you have to brake, which automatically makes it a “sim” in most console gamers’ eyes.

  27. eiwfihaaa

when i said ‘looks’ i meant looks in terms of the handling/physics. i didnt mean literally the looks.

i should have made that more clear i guess. doesnt matter.

the reason why console games come under more scrutiny is because they parade themselves as sims (forza 2, gt5) when they are. absolute rubbish compared to the pc sim variants (rfactor gtrevo etc.etc.). just look at rbr versus the colin mcrae rally franchise on the console. fair enough i guess they don’t market it as a rally realistic driving experience, but still.

so when a game does come out like nfs shift thats said to have ‘realistic physics’ and all the rest of it, we’re bound to be sceptical of such claims. even if the developers behind it have proven pedigree (blimey) they still have to work to the constraints of the market and publisher, when it comes to console games. hence why we’re all awaiting the demo of nfs shift to see what its really made of.
