Slightly Mad Studios Teases New Franchise

Some very interesting things are happening over in the GTPlanet forums as Slightly Mad Studios Head of Studio Ian Bell has been teasing the launch of a massiveย new franchise by the London-based developer.

According to Bell, the developer is due to launch a major new franchise soon. Having built their reputation based on creating racing simulations, it’s no surprise that the one confirmed fact about the new franchise is that it is “sort of” related to racing.

What’s your take on what the new franchise could be about? Speculate away in the comments!

    Red Bull air Racing….?

    • LogiForce

They already did a game with and about Red Bull Air Racing, which released not that long along. So… that is a been there, done that type of thing already.

      • Easy DaRon

Red Bull air racing was already released? Just heard an announcment, but never a release date. or anything. Would have been my guess, too.

  • jason Subic

Hill climb …….or………..Open world title would be pretty sweet .

  • Bakkster

A Late Model simulation where you rise from writing a troll blog to running a regional club oval series. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Pvt Stash

Lol, the ” Bell ” tolls for thee? ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Markus Ott

Ian Bell says it is much more massive. Multiclass tanks vs lawmowers racing is my guess.

  • melanieuk1

I welcome anything as long as it’s not using any form of ISI technology.

    • HardRock

I think you are very much mischaracterizing the situation. It’s simply that we have so little information (practically nothing) about the new title that everyone is just having a bit of fun with it. Honestly, I think Ian wouldn’t have said anything if he didn’t expect exactly this kind of reaction. Based on Andy’s twitter posts I’m sure they are smiling as well at the ridiculous guesses. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • GamerMuscle

If you have licences and assets it would be stupid not to try and use / get the value from them.

One of the huge pay offs with driving games is that once a developer has overcome the risk of the engine and core development you have much that can be re-used or tweaked at much lower cost to produce other fully fledged titles.

SMS is also not a small company when you have 30+ staff it only takes a few of them without tasks for a company to effectively be throwing away ยฃ1000’s a day.

So really it should not be a surprise for SMS or any large developer to have multiple projects on the go.

  • Ernie

    Hmmm…..massive …… okay … my guess ……… vehicle physics for driving/racing on planets/moons in Star Citizen. ^^
Baja / off-road racing on a moon would be awesome. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • HardRock

      I think it’s clearly Half-Life 3.

      • LogiForce

Nah, it’s finally a sequal to Stunts 4D with track editor and licensed cars. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • melanieuk1

They have the official Indy cars license for project cars 2, so why should they not make an official Indy car standalone racing sim.

    • Markus Ott

Because it wouldn’t make any sense for them to implement them into pCARS2 if that’s their plan.

      • Steven Shears

Although it does fit the “sort of racing” criteria noted. lol

    • 5hitm4k3r666

Do they really have the lisence for the whole series? Afaik they lisenced the car+drivers and some of the tracks incl. the Indianapolis 500, but I would be surprised if they developed a fully licenced Indycar game. Makes the implementation in Pcars 2 pretty much obsolote if you ask me. And “sort of” does’t sound like a Indycar sim or anything. I would be really surpised if they did this.

      • melanieuk1

They do have some sort of license to release Indy cars in project cars 2 or are an official partner, I didn’t say for the whole series, information can be found here http://www.virtualr.net/watch-andy-tudor-demonstrate-project-cars-2-pc-gamer-weekender. Or it could be Formula Drift.

      • Steven Shears

I don’t think a Formula Drift game would be big enough. Its only a side element in most games. Probably why they’ve incorporated elements of drifting via the Rally X/Snow. I’m guessing half the reason they’re releasing RB Air Race is simply they can sell it cheap via Steam. They know the big franchises and they know what sells. Its got to be bigger then just drifting.

The Tap Dancing Leprechaun Race is my guess, as that would sort of be about racing.

  • Easy DaRon

If itยดs something unexciting like World of Speed, I am still not interested.

    • https://www.youtube.com/c/chillisteak Chillisteak

They were dabbling with the idea of a Road Rash style game a few years back I believe, but I doubt it’s that.

  • Steven Shears

Of course, those of us that were crowdfunders for Pcars may recall (about 4 years ago!) there was that Road Rash game being muted about. Not the Wii U Biker Bash title – but something akin to Road Rash. Some of us put up some hacked up images. And its about time for a decent next gen version of that genre.

  • MC

Total guess but a Forza Horizon open-world style game. Unless it’s that redbull airrace thing from ages ago.

  • Balles

    pCars – pCars 2 -> Massive : pTrucks -> More Massive : pMonsterTrucks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

“Having built their reputation based on creating racing simulation”

Err, you mean racing graphics, pCars has nothing to do with Racing SIMULATION…

Let me guess, they’re launching a title with realistic physics! OMG!!

  • Carlos Jorge

“Having built their reputation based on creating racing simulations”

Not true, pCars or NFS are not simulators, they’re GAMES…

    • melanieuk1

Enlighten the world, and tell us, which game you play in your basement is?

      • Carlos Jorge

rFactor2, the only racing SIM we humans have access to! Do you know it? Or just play games? I also have real life racing experience so…

      • Trimaz

Watch out guys, we have a pro sim racer, here.

      • HardRock

Technically, all sports, real or otherwise, are just games, so…

      • melanieuk1

” I also have real life racing experience so…”

I can race a milk float does that count?

    • Steven Shears

To be fair they programmed GT Legends mate (along with Sector 3). That was a solid game/sim.

      • Carlos Jorge

        No, they didn’t ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Steven Shears

Ian Bell was Co-founder of Sector 3. He formed the orignal Simbin then took programmers off that when he formed Blimey Games.

      • Carlos Jorge

Yes, he went the wrong path ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now seriously, what annoys me most is that it’s 2017 and we still have GAMES with crap physics instead of advanced simulators…

      • Rlee

        Another armchair expert.

      • melanieuk1

Thank you very much, I knew what computer “Game” he would call a real sim, so I just continued to ignore his reply, this discussion isn’t going anywhere, so funny indeed.

      • Carlos Jorge

Well, seems like you don’t know rFactor2, try it, you’ll be surprised ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • melanieuk1

Seems like you are new to virtualR, I’ve tried rf2 and I own it, in it’s current form it’s toiletware, I will try it again, once they update it’s dated graphics, and fix its wonky low speed spin out physics.

      • Steven Shears

Well there are simulators so i don’t get your point. You’ve already posted Rf2 and theres AC and Automobilista and iRacing if you want to go down that route. They seem pretty solid to me. For all other non-sims, well thats what makes business sense in the gaming world. Forza Racing/Horizon has more approximated physics but its a fun game and sells because it can do very good approximations. GT is of a similar ilk. The fact is People don’t find sims that fun and GAMING is about fun. But if you want something more challenging well thats covered.

      • Carlos Jorge

Agree! Finally a smart guy with solid and constructive argument ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Leper Messiah

        Simbin not sector 3

      • Steven Shears

Yeah I meant with the same team. Id meant to give those guys credit as well ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Leper Messiah

oh just shut up with the utter nonsense please, it’s tiresome and pathetic, GROW UP.

  • https://soundcloud.com/glen-orpheus Glen Orpheus

i believe its flight simcade (“,)

  • Captain Stabby

Stab in the dark official F1 license

  • Leper Messiah

Red Bull Air Race? It was mooted a while back.

  • Steve Pearce

Monster Truck Madness was a brilliant game (and the best workout you’ll get whilst using a steering wheel!). Maybe they should do that?
