Simbin Announces RACE On

Following last week’s speculation about a new WTCC-based title from Simbin, the Swedish studio has now officially announced their new PC racing simulation: RACE On.

RACE On will include all cars and tracks of the 2008 WTCC season, including the Japanese Okayama circuit. Furthermore, the game will include iconic US muscle cars and all-new US tracks. To round things out, open-wheel fans will be getting their hands on the Formula Masters series.

RACE On will be available as expansion pack to GTR Evolution/RACE 07 or as standalone version with all RACE07 content. As a further bonus, RACE On will include the STCC – The Game addon, bringing Scandinavia’s most exciting touring car series and a bunch of very challeging tracks to the simulation. RACE On is scheduled to be released in Q2 2009.

RACE On includes the following new content:
-        16 unique car models in 8 classes with over 140 variations.
-        12 tracks of which several never has been released by SimBin on PC.

All in all this makes up for:
-        39 unique car models in 17 classes with over 450 variations.
-        30 tracks and 17 alternate layouts, in total 47 tracks.

 Wow. quite an impressive set there.
    .

  • Bram

Now I could sit down and whine here about another gMotor expansion blah blah. But on the other hand; if I look at my RACE 07 install incl. GTR Evo and STCC The Game, and then imagine WTCC 08 and some US Tracks with it, then I do see a very complete package which garuantees a couple of more seasons of fun league racing :D Me likes!

  • Fisico

WTCC is boring, BTCC is more interesting.
    And only 2008, not 2009?
    No, thanks.

  • trebor901

I think this is awesome announcement, especially to see how they do at the Lada and the Leon TDI.

  • phil23

    Not bad at all.

Those who haven’t bought STCC already will be getting an excellent deal, but unfortunately I already have it.

Will definately get this though as it’s a good upgrade to extend the games life even more (not that I’m the slightest bit bored with it yet)

  • Rasmus

Sounds good. Looking forward to trying the new US muscle cars! I love ‘em. :P

But… is this the Project TOAD that was also announced? I hope not!

  • hompe

    sounds great

  • Rasmus

Edit: This probably is “Codename TOAD”, because all references to “TOAD” have been removed on Simbin.se. And I had my hopes up for a new FIA GT game. Damn it.
WTCC 08 will be cool enough though. :) Just wish they would add 24 hour racing and day-night transitions.

  • Paul Kelly

    Sounds good!

  • Mr. A

I wonder if we who already have STCC will get a better price when buying via steam. I doubt it.

Will there be any new features at all, or only new content?

  • Vivian Stans

:sad2: I was hoping for a whole new simbin game and away of that steam thing  that Race07 and the expensions are just not great….the game feels like its just unfinished. I like the game GTR2 more than GTR evo however the sound is better than GTR2…I admit. but I prefer GTR2. and the G forces is bad.

Other question: Do somebody now if all the great cars and sounds of GTR evo are available for GTR2 (Mod)

    thank you (Holland)

  • yakshemash

Oh GREAT! another exactly the same game from SimBin! Woohoo!!

  • kankoine

    THIS IS SUPER COOL!

Probably like a lot of other people, I don’t buy games on Steam because they use a lot of bandwith to download, you don’t have the nice box to put on a shelf and you have to pay the same price…

So I don’t have STCC since it is too hard to get in Canada… I’ll finally get this, plus muscle cars and a new season…

I must say wow!!! cuz’ this is probably going to be cheap like the other Race games and it’s got lots of content.

A good way to make us wait for GTR3!!

  • Floptickle

    NICE! And Formula Masters! :D

  • http://www.custom-8.dk Tomas

Did’nt Lada just enter officially here in 2009 ? previously have only constructor supported cars been included, but honestly I’m more interrested in the US Muscle cars and new tracks

I agree with Vivian Stans,Although I have all the simbin titles mentioned including the stcc title,I cant help being a bit dissapointed,to me although still a great sim,the race 07 and its extensions just cant compare to GTR2 for me,I guess most of us are awaiting the true sucsessor to GTR2 as it is old and tired and PC’s in general are capable of the next progression of this title,I guess we just have to wait and wait, but c’mon simbin dont dissapoint us true devotee’s :sad2:
Having said that I know I will still buy/download it when it arrives,as I always do :sd:

  • MatzeLoCal

Count me to the disappointed ones.

A successor of GTR2 would have been great. More 24-Hour-Races would be great. Maybe again something historic. 24-Hours at Le Mans, Nordschleife, Spa,… with Porsche 917 and so on. How about the “game to the movie” ;)

  • JimmyB

Well, the lack of Lizard is a disappointment, but if the price is right then I’ll definitely pick it up. STCC + RACE On + GTR Evo = pretty damn good package there.

GTR2 was created by Blimey Games, which explains the differences between the series. Which is why some of us are cautiously optimistic about a certain other title. Although I won’t give up hope that one day we’ll see a proper GTR3, as Simbin have still got the FIA GT license (I think?).

  • http://www.custom-8.dk Tomas, www.custom-8.dk

Blimey! made GT Legends, GTR2 is a Simbin product under 10tacle Studios marketed by Atari. They reason why there is no dynamic lightning in RACE’07 is that the featured series does’nt require it – and making tracks that support it flawlessly are VERY timeconsuming..

  • JimmyB

GTR2 is a Simbin title, but it was developed by Blimey! Games acting as a subcontractor to Simbin, who presumably were going through a phase of rebuilding. I don’t think Blimey even existed until a couple of months before the release of GTL.

  • AeroMechanical

I’m a little disappointed too. I was hoping Toad was a change over to their new engine or at the very least the addition of some of the more fundamental features missing since GTR2 like night-racing and more race types.

They keep adding a little bit of content and presenting it as though it were a totally new title and they’ve been doing this for a while now. The new additions look pretty cool, but it’s time for a genuinely new sim already. From the perspective of a new customer though, it really seems like a cool package.

The muscle cars and US tracks ought to be interesting, kind of like adding GTL content the way EVO added GTR2 content. Formula Masters ought to fit in nicely between FBMW and F3000 too. For sure I’m going to buy it, but I’d hoped for a bigger change.

  • skid

I honestly can’t understand some guys here complaining about this not being a Lizard PC game. We all know since last year that Simbin was planing more Race’07 expansion pack(s) for 2009. I mean, who is even surprised about this being on gmotor?

About the expansion. Sounds cool and I will get this for sure. I’m still a bit disappointed though as I was hoping for a really “highly requested series” they were once announcing. BTCC would have been awesome. Well, maybe there’s more down the line – I’m certainly hoping for further add-ons as I just love the Race’07 base and it’s growing content.

  • Vivian Stans

I definitely gonna buy, no doubt about it. but I like solid high-end games and that was and still is GTR2 and that is what Race07 is missing.

  • LensFlare

Apart from night racing and shadows in cockpit, what did GTR2 have that Race07 doesn’t?

I mean, i’ve learned to live with it.

I’m sure we’ll see night racing on the awaited Lizard based new sim.

But for now, be prepared, because they might just release another addon this year. After all, they talked about “other addonS for 2009″.

I personnaly think it’s pretty cool… Adding content to keep the fun. We now have a pretty much complete platform, open to modding and so on.

Again, I only miss night racing. The rest is better than GTR2 in my opinion…

  • Vkt

they don’t have my money , one more time…

  • zand

    I’m a disappointed. I was hoping for A1GP or GP2… :sad2:

  • Gabkicks

I was hoping this used the lizard engine.

  • stabiz

I`m passing on this one. (Until a supermod requires it for dvd-check)

  • http://markus-moeller.de MarkusM

race on. next one will be called “carry on” ? :happyevil:

  • xilix

This is laughable. I can’t wait to inspect the code in this expansion so I can find even more ridiculous development follies.

This series is getting quite exhausted wouldn’t you say? There’s no way I’m payin’ full price for another mod. The last one I bought was Evo and I refuse to open my wallet again until they release a next generation title.

Oh… and what’aya say Simbin… how ’bout this time ’round, you don’t copy&paste code?

  • ScHiRoCk

    Crap i already got STCC…

    Payed for nothing… lame.

  • skid

I find it quite interesting to read about the priorities some people seem to set. All this talk about “next generation” and shiny graphics. Dunno, I’m still fine with the Race’07 looks and it’s racing mechanics. I mean, graphics is one of the least important things in a simulation anyway.

Sure, Simbin does some recycling here and there but as long as the new content and the price is right (it was alright for the previous two add-ons in my opinion) and the game runs solid, I don’t really care. But hey, that’s just my opinion…

  • phil23

    I agree completely skid.

I still watch replays in rFactor, GTR2 and Race/Evo and I think back to when I could only dream of seeing my virtual rides looking so good. Yes I’ve owned and played games like GRID and DIRT, Forza2, PGR4 and GT5, but none of them ever get me as hooked as all these Gmotor based titles have.

All that really matters is how it feels and the immersion and realism.

If a game like Need4Speed Shift were to feel like a Simbin title then we’d have it all, but it is unlikely in the next year or 2. Infact I don’t doubt that our first Next Gen Race Sim will come from these guys eventually.

I know rFactor 2 is on it’s way, but I don’t think they will push the boundaries visually (though I’m sure it will be a good step forward). Lizard will eventually get onto our PC’s and I’m sure it will be worth it when it does. Until then, as long as they keep my current Sims content coming, then I’ll support them.

  • JimmyB

It’s not just about shiny graphics though. While I’ll buy this to support Simbin, I think people just want to see some progression. Even now it’s very debatable whether or not a game like GTR Evolution is a significant step ahead of GT Legends – a game that’s now 3-4 years old. In terms of racing mechanics – they’ve always been great, but what else has changed? I’m just not sure how much longer Simbin plan to sustain themselves by marketing and releasing glorified car/trackpacks. It’s more than likely that something much bigger is going on behind the scenes, but let’s hope we see it sooner rather than later.

Generally I just want to see some progression in the genre as a whole. Why should sim-racing still be inherently hamstrung by outdated graphics, dated production values, a lack of polish and being painfully inaccessible? It’s probably about time somebody attempted to address these issues properly. GTR2 was probably the best effort in terms of putting together a well-rounded, immersive and accessible game. It’s no coincidence that it’s also the most critically-acclaimed, and by far the most well-known racing sim outside of communities like this one.

  • paupau

What happend to 24h racing? Where is LeMans? Where is Spa? I want a 24h edurance race at Nurburing.
Why don’t SimBin make a Le Mans Series with prototypes and 24h format?

  • paupau
