Road America 2009 – First Previews

After bringing us several rFactor tracks including Fuji Speedway and the Heartland Park Topeka, ethone is now working on a scratch-made 2009 version of Road America.

Below are first previews showing an overhead shot of the track as well as a first preview of the 3d curbs with basic textures.

Located in Elkart Lake, Wisconsin, Road America is considered to be one of the finest road racing facility in the United States. The 6,5 kilometer track offers an interesting mix of ups and downs, long high speed straights and fourteen corners, including the famous carousell. The track accommodates up to 150,000 spectators and is one of the few US tracks suitable to host a Formula One Grand Prix.

O goodie! I was just practiszing on Road America. The first one didn’t work at all. The 2008 does, but a better one is always welcome. Please make the track edges even with the ground. So slight offs don’t cause a instant spin. Thanks!

    Looking forward to this one

  • ethone

The track edges are even with the grass. rFactor has the option to have a SinkIn applied to materials in the track’s .tdf.

They were elevated in the older versions because F1C did not have those capabilities. It was actually something I liked about the track when it was released. It was the first track that I know of where the authors even considered the drop-off from road to grass.

Hey ethone, will you be making the short track as well?

  • http://www.syncro-racing.com Damo

Too much saturation in the curb textures but am looking forward to this one!

  • tigeraid

Your Heartland-Park track is a huge hit in the efnet#cars HGT league. Really looking forward to your work here too!

  • Husky42

Thanks for making this, but I dont get it.

I’ve been waiting years for a scrach made Road America. Simbin is now coming out with one and it will be converted as is everything they do.

Why do dev’s tend to mirror what is being releassed?

    We have 3 Quality 2008 F1 mods.

    3 2009 Mods WIP

    etc

That said, I expect this work to be as great as heartland so im sure it will be awesome.

Hopefully we will see New Jersey Motorsports Complex next :D

I for one did not know that SimBin were making a version of Road America. However their screenshots don’t look very promising. I like the touch of dirt on the inside of the turns.
You can see a comparison shot here: http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9649/racomparesbrealtrackt5.jpg

The wall on the left is too far away from the track, the curbs are all 2d, the turn is low poly (you can see the jagged edge), the tires aren’t placed right and too low. They placed some fake adboards.
I guess their great track making personell went elsewhere somewhere

I’ll continue doing a proper version of the track.
Also, people do tracks they have fun making. It’s hard to create a track over a period of several months if you have no personal interest and fun in it.

Last week our league ran Road America. Man what a hard track that is. Miss your braking point by a foot and your in big trouble. I look forward to seeing your version. We are running Topeka this week. What a great track that is. I am confident that you will create another great track.

    Thanks ethone!

Plus, that “it’s going to be converted” point does not count. These conversions are illegal and should not even be compared to proper scratch-made versions like the one ethone is making.

Don’t discourage modders with illegal converts…

  • stabiz

This is good news, Road America is the best track in the US IMO.

  • stabiz

Together with Laguna Seca, that is.

  • GeraArg

    Good new!
Heartland Park Topeka is a great job, surely this version of Road America also will be good…

Nice! Topeka is one of my favourite tracks. Fun with every kind of car.

Would love to see a dragstrip addon for Topeka though. Could be seriously fun online! Plus the strip is allready modeled in pretty high detail.

After waiting a very long time, finally a scratch made version! The Simbin version isn’t bad, but it isn’t the greatest. You can drive the track in Race Pro on the 360 and will be released with Race On.

ethone if you need any pics or info, i have a quite a few from the past few years that i’ve been there. It’s my home track and i live only about an hour away. I don’t know if i’ll be going there at all for the rest of this year (I wanna go to the Run Offs but don’t know if i can get off work for it). I’ll admit that i’ve never have taken a lap of the track but after walking the whole track for the past 6 years, i know pretty much all the track side objects are and other various things other than the track its self.

As for gaming references, the one in iRacing is really good. I don’t have the game but they did have a few demos during the ALMS weekend that i tried. I was very impressed. But there is a Forza 2 version that i think is really good as well to be used as reference.

Husky, the simbin one sucks frankly, elevations are all wrong, the kink is too subtle, and it has stupid unrealistic billboards everywhere….

@wthone, will you be making the pits accurate? it’s always bothered me about the current ones as there is a staging area down by the top of pit in, and there is no gap at the end of the pits.

  • Husky42

Oh I mean no disrespect to ethone and I’m sorry it was taken as such.

Like I said if his heartland park is anything to go off of this is going to be a tremendous track. Typically scratch made stuff ends up better then dev stuff though Simbin is IMO known for making some great tracks.

Ethone, I do apologize if you took my post in any way as negative. I’ve just noticed a trend in content that either A. Modders make going into developer made content ala Race On and Jasons mods. Or B. Dev content that is released being made over again by modders.

I am probably awaiting this just as much as the next guy who grew up watching Cart and now ALMS race at RA.

    Ethone,

I’ve done some lights for the Topeka Heartland track. Basically just half the track is lit up when you add light sources to where the light beams from the tops of the poles are pointing. Looks good down the main straight and in the first two bends.

If you are interested in including it in an upgrade, I will send it through. Some of the surfaces are not receiving the light properly. Just needs some values changed somewhere to reflect it.

But it opens up some racing at night which on that track is pretty good.
