rFactor 2 in 4k Resolution – Video

While everybody has been getting used to HD resolution in TV, movies and gaming, a new standard is already shaping up on the horizon – 4k.

4k resolution goes up to 4096 × 3112 pixels in Full Aperture mode, creating much sharper images than those in traditional HD resolution. Since this standard is fairly new, there’s little content and even fewer 4k-ready devices available yet, Youtube already allows uploads of 4k material though.

Obrigado02 has made use of this by uploading a gameplay video of rFactor 2 in 4K resolution. Of course, normal PC monitors aren’t able to display such high resolutions so you can’t experience the 4k effect fully on your monitor, nevertheless it is an amazing sneak peak into the future.

The video below has been made in what’s called Quad Full High Definition (QFHD – 3840 x 2160 pixels) that doubles 1080p HD in both vertical & horizontal dimensions. To watch the video in 4K, click on the video to go to Youtube and select “Original” resolution.

Ridiculous physics, like a boat on the road :D

like it should be. look how high he revs in the low gears. hes to hard on the throttle + for example before and at casino squere he should had used 3rd instead of 2nd.

    Don’t forget the cold tyres… ;)

ah.. for people that works in Nascar, F1, and Automotive your comment is appropiate.. :-)
    compliments :-)

4K, the new 3D!!! Don’t count on me, Full HD is enough for gaming and movies, specially when we are about to enter a new recession…

Why are we watching  this? Anyone got a 4k monitor?

More like the end of capitalism…

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Of course not, but at least we know it is possible. More information is never a bad thing. You don’t have to watch if you don’t want to.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Guys, don’t bother, it’s the troll and his friend Theroro29.
    They’re back…

  • Eric Zehnder

I agree, Emil. There are very few people that have a 4K monitor. Besides (and not to start a flame war), but this doesn’t make the game look any better. It just doesn’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andreduartepatricio André Patrício

More information? 4K it’s always possible… 8K too… Modern GPUs can do a lot more than this… The post doesn’t even states if it’s something supported by the rFactor’s engine or some upscaling done in the GPU (which isn’t true 4K… and would only be usefull for post processing, Anti-Aliasing, etc…)

So I will go with Emil’s idea… pretty useless video. And 4K won’t be that great to Simulators… Sims requires the screen to be ~1 meter away from the user… so, a simple 40 inches screen will be big enough, you just don’t need more vertical view than that… and you won’t notice a difference from HD to 4K in 40 inches… Want more side view? Triple screen… more horizontal view… same vertical (unless your really love the sky and the pedals of the car…)

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

You’re totally right, a triple screen setup is much more usefull than the 4k resolution, but still, I was talking in absolutes. I didn’t know it existed, so I learned something. How is that bad ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Nobody’s going to be able to afford them anyways ;)

    5760×1200 ftw? =p

Stupidly high resolution and stupidly low bitrate = VHS quality.
4K and Youtube don’t go together well.

But at least this video lets you appreciate how inaccurate the track is. Monaco wasn’t this wide in the 60′s…

It’s easy to see pixels on a 40 inch screen at 1920×1080

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IVTRDYOF5EUFPK557EW4Z25LRI Terry

Just imagine how noticeable the horizon pop-in will be. Since you are going to need much more graphics processing power to render the scene at a decent framerate you’ll likely need to make even more compromises in LODs and clip planes to make up for it.

And if rfactor 2 isn’t much more optimized than it is now when the final version is done, you’ll likely need need a machine that’ll run Crysis at several hundred frames per second to get any decent performance at 4x.

I’m not against the idea of higher resolutions on a more “pixel dense” screen, I can notice pixels at 1920×1080 on a small LCD from normal viewing distance (mostly on distant objects, even with AA), but I think calling it an upcoming standard is a premature.

You know what I’d like to see more info on? These head-mounted displays with 1080p, possible 3D, and most importantly head tracking abilities. Seems like the most natural way of viewing a car’s interior with realistic FOV and of course the ability to check blind spots, mirrors, checking out the rear leg room – you know, the necessities.

Your going to need to be no more than 18″ away from your monitor (your 30″ monitor) to gain any detail with 4K over 1080P.. .. and no more than 3 feet away from a 50″ screen..

    See this chart. http://i.imgur.com/JPyDY.png

looks nice on a cinealta projector. although compression artifacts here and there. which makes the actual game look better in 1080p then the 4k vid on youtube.

What´s the point of this video when you don´t have a monitor wich shows 4k reslotutions??

  • Anonymous

    I’m satisfied with 1080p. :D

  • http://zerez86.blogspot.com/ zerez86

you can see this only with the help of the higher resolution…ah ok…and it has surely nothing to do with the fov…

    Dork.  Just kidding

Sadly, I am not impressed.  Maybe I have set my expectations far to high (blame the hype, not me) but this just looks like hi-res Grand Prix Legends with better lighting.

I haven’t been “wow’ed” by any rF2 media to this point.  I was expecting Dirt3 or F1 2011 graphics and better than rF physics.  I don’t think that is expecting too much as those are the benchmarks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andreduartepatricio André Patrício

It’s cheaper to buy a high-AA capable graphic card than a 4K screen, now that’s for sure ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/andreduartepatricio André Patrício

Oh, sorry then, mate… Didn’t know you hadn’t heard about 4K. The Screen brands (Samsung, Sony, etc) are trying to make it a new standard (as once was done with HD)… But I think it won’t be usefull for the major crowd…

For BIG TV sets (to watch football, etc) it will be usefull, but at a cost! Not taking in account that the amount of space required to store a 4K full movie will be… wow! And in 3D it will be wow! * 2… The same with broadcasting channels… It just won’t happen anytime soon, I think! Because up-scaling 1080 to 4K… it’s just silly! (unless using Anti-Aliasing, as said… That way, there are much more pixels to store the info, so… better quality!

A lot of people were tbh, Sadly this could spell problems for the longevity of this title with so many other promising titles with modding capabilities coming our way! By the sounds of things a lot of people would of been happy with an outstanding graphics engine with rf1 physics.

Personally I think rf2 has really good physics and i’m enjoying it, we’ll see how it improves before release!

I think we have to wait for some third party material before we can really judge what rf2 is capable of.
ISI basic content have never been really nice, modders have always done a far better work for cars or tracks (who still play with ISI cars and tracks in rf1 ?)

Sadly rFactor has missed the boat i have been put of buying the beta, out dated graphics only subtle changes from original not impressed so far  and might not bother with the game altogether , CARS for 10 euros is better for me at the moment the classic F1 Cars are great fun and graphics are amazing already….. GTR 3 will wait and see ?

Am I missing something? I read that graph as saying that with a 30 inch screen u only have to be closer than 4 feet to see higher than 1080p resolution. And at any closer than 24 inches you can see higher than 4k resolution…..

Personally I think 4k would be a real treat for both pc and tv/home movies.
