Renato Simioni On The Ayrton Senna Game

Back in October last year, Reiza Studios announced to be working on an official Ayrton Senna racing game.

Since then, the studio has kept busy developing the 2012 update for their Game Stock Car title as no further details on the Senna game have emerged since then.

Other than the fact that the title will be using an all-new engine and that the game is made in co-operation with the Ayrton Senna foundation, little is known so far.

Now, in an interview with Racedepartment’s Patrick Giranthon, Renato Simioni has revealed some new bits and pieces, specifically on the company’s relationship with the Ayrton Senna Institute and their role in the project:

We dont decide to give anything to the foundation (or rather the Ayrton Senna Institute – the Senna Foundation is a separate institution operating in Europe) – the IAS exists for the purpose of raising funds from the Senna “brand” through product licensing agreements such as ours, and redirecting these funds to the various philantropic activities they promote – mostly towards promoting education and oportunities to brazilian children. So it´s not our option, but certainly a noble cause we´re very proud and happy to be contributing to.

Having managed to get their approval is also something that I´m very proud of, as they dont just license any product for any company that comes knocking on the door – the project has to suit the IAS “ethos” in some way, and they all are individually and personally approved by Viviane Senna, Ayrton´s sister. We were very careful about approaching it the right way, and also at the right time as Reiza is still a very small and young company, and one has to produce the trust we have what it takes to do the Senna name justice.

Reiza has taken up a major challenge with the title as recreating Senna’s career means dealing with complicated licensing issues among other problems as the Brazilian spent almost his entire career in Formula One. This is why sim racers interested in the new title shouldn’t expect rapid progress as the team is busy getting all the details in order:

That does present some major hurdles however as one can imagine, but we´re working towards piercing all the fundamental parts together. It was very important to get Senna, as even though the project goes way beyond him and the IAS alone, through them we manage to get through a few important doors. It´s by no means an easy road but we´re slowly making progress!

And of course all this has to convert into a Game that is worth all that. There too, we´re making slow but good progress. I wouldnt want to raise expectations too high, not least because there´s still a long long way to go and a few fundamental bits still to be put in place. I suppose underpromising and overdelivering is an approach that has served us well so far, so I´ll stick to it until we´re closer to the finish line.

If they do it justice why not

If they nail the career mode, it might be the most epic and dramatic career mode of any racing game ever. If they add proper storytelling, the use of cutscenes and things like that to a brilliant and challenging game engine, the game could end up being a cult classic.

I think that today this is the sim-project with the greatest potential.

In 8 years from now there’ll probably be more joyful things in life than rFactor, like… a trip to Mars xD

A NSX test drive in Suzuka have to be present. ;)

    No thought needed. I’m in

I’d certainly be willing to try it but talk about taking on a lot. Not only is it officially licensed from the Senna family AND have to recreate his life in some way – but it has to have the physics to match!

Think about the potential controversy in our detail-obsessed sim world when it’s just too easy to make the car ‘dance’ as he once did. Should it be so hard that only the truly [virtually] gifted be able to make the car dance on the edge? Will it be considered unrealistic or even ‘simcade’ if lesser mortals can do the same with the mighty Lotus and McLaren that he did?

I don’t envy them their task but good luck to them.

Without trying to sound disrespectful, if they are creating a game that follows/replicates Senna’s career, will the game go no further than 1994?

  • Mark

I agree, looking foward to see their engine.

I’d hazard a guess at saying that the cutoff point would be 1993. End it on a high note – his last win in the final race of the season, his last race for McLaren, and the last race his rival Prost competed in. Maybe have the 1994 Williams FW16 as a bonus car?

Bonuscar? That sounds a bit awkward too ;-)

God I hope they are going to use the rFactor 2 Engine for this game. With how amazing they did with Game Stock Car using the rFactor 1 engine, and with how amazing rFactor 2 already is in public testing phase, imagine these guys using the rFactor 2 engine WOW

Senna tested Indy and Rally cars, drove GroupC Porsche, Mercedes 190E, and at least dozen other cars – you think they all should be ingame? :)

    Mmm, didn’t quite think that through… :/

  • Eric Zehnder

Looking forward to ramming Prost at Suzuka. ;)

You clearly missed the point. Senna helped develop the NSX, he worked close with honda on the whole project. So, that makes the NSX diferent from all the things you mentioned. Anyway, it was just a suggestion, regardless I’m sure the game will be great.

    based on?

The problem then – is, how to end it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Krzysztof-Urban/100000662962796 Krzysztof Urban

But does NSX make greater input to Senna’s career than let’s say winning 190E at Nurb?

  • http://www.facebook.com/SteveK.BY Steve Kong Bing Yuan

the most remarkable ones for me is the NSX and NSX-R. I dont mind not having the Type R variant but atleast the NSX should be in the game. the 190E should be present too. but the NSX road car is very important imo
