Real-Time Racing – The Mystery Continues…..

Posted on December 12th, 2009 in

Ever since iOpener announced that a well-known driver will be joining their beta test programme soon, the whole community is guessing who it will be.

In addition to the already available hints (well known driver coming back from retirement, will be driving a classic car that made him “fly” for years), a few bits of info have been released before his identity will be revealed next week.

The mystery driver has been preparing for his drive for the past few months and has recently received his new red driving suit. The test at Zolder will most likely happen under difficult weather conditions which will be no problem for the driver since he’s used to the cold, coming from the north of the globe. Furthermore, he’s mentioned to have a memorable laugh…

Share your guess in the comments and let’s see who was right in a week’s time…

If you don’t want to miss your chance to race against the mysterious pro, make sure to pre-register for a RTR beta key here.

Hmmm… that definitely sounds like a Finn. But we’re probably talking about track racers, not rally drivers, so I’m going to take a punt on… J.J. Lehto.

While a Rally driver might seem an odd choice – the more I read the clues, the more I just think Marcus Gronholm. He is kinda coming out of retirement (going to run Rally Sweden this year) and of course, in a rally car, you do ‘fly’.

More obvious clues are the weather and from the north of the globe, hinting heavily to a Scandinavian and last picture I saw on a news piece regarding Gronholm, had him in a red suit.

Of course, this is pure conjecture at best!

Easy ! I think that the driver will be Mika Hakkinen.

What makes me think about him:

1/ Word like “fly”: Mika is also know as “The Flying Finnish”.

2/ His “memorable laugh”: Mika Hakkinen was famous to not explain any emotion on F1 GP podiums.

3/ He comes from north: Mika is Finnish.

I think that it could be that.

    Franck.

Think you might be right there. Although I still think there is a possibility it’s a rally driver. But why would Hakkinen wear a red suit? Hmm.

Are we all agreed it’s a Finn?

But why would Hakkinen wear a red suit?

um…. Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Marlboro, Vodafone the list goes on…

  6. Marlbro

I too think it is definitely Mika Hakkinen, he used to wear a red suit when he drove the Marlbro McLaren.

I am pretty sure its not Mika Hakkinen, because that would mean an F1 license. (The car that made him “fly” for years)

    How about a certain K.Rosberg….

    Niki Lauda..

1/ Word like “fly”: Niki has his own airline called Lauda Air. The car that made him fly was a Ferrari and he used to wear a red suit

    2/ His “memorable laugh”: Hmm… http://nimg.sulekha.com/Sports/original700/niki-lauda-2009-7-11-10-40-23.jpg

3/ He comes from north: Austria ia also from the northern part of the globe.

This is what I suggested in the previous piece of news and I think I’ll still stick with it:

“Flying” to me means he’s a “flying finn” but who?

I don’t think it’s a rally driver so it’s not Kankkunen, Mäkinen, Grönholm or any of those guys. It can’t be Häkkinen or Rosberg either. That would be too good to be true…!! It can’t be Mika Salo since he’s busy with NASCAR. The only flying finn left I can think of is Jyrki Järvilehto (or JJ Lehto). Not sure if he can be described as “world-famous” but that would be my guess.

Why can’t it be hakkinen? He had that memorable laugh when asked about ferreri.. He did wear a red suit but the car isn’t a classic.

I would of gone with Makinen with the Mitsibushi Evo as being as classic rally car that flew. It can’t be kankkunen as he never wore red overals.

Slightly different to everyone else’s opinion but:
Peter Dumbreck “flew” in the 1999 le mans race in a Mercedes CLR, he’s from the northern hemisphere.
Just a guess, it does seem that it is Hakkinen.

Ha! Jackie Stewart! Dude’s gotta be 70 and he’s a flying Scot

Hey guys! Ive also created a new sim with a little help from me friends! One is a former WRC Champion 50 times and the other one has won the Formula 1 championship thirty(!) times! So now you know that the experience will absolutley be out of this world!

..I mean come on, how hard can it be to say the name of the driver? Just like the one driver that where mentioned in that article featuring Dom. whats so special about not letting us know who the driver is, if he’s already world famous?

SergeantBoner: > whats so special about not letting us know who the driver is

Because then you can hire any old Peter Pissquick but have folk speculate for weeks that you’ve got an actual racing legend.
