RaceRoom Racing Experience – New Previews

Racedepartment has received some new screenshots of Simbin’s RaceRoom Racing Experience.

Racedepartment has received some new screenshots of Simbin’s RaceRoom Racing Experience, showing the Aquila CR1 Sports GT and the BMW 134 Judd hill climb car.

The guys also had the chance to sample a demo of the new title at GamesCom. According to their hands-on, the new free-to-play title moves away  a bit from Simbin’s die-hard sim approach, featuring a bit more forgiving physics and extensive Facebook integration.

The guys do praise the sounds a lot, several of you had been wondering whether the sounds in the first trailer were actually in-game and Simbin has confirmed they are.

Unfortunately, no moving footage of the title has yet made it to Youtube, even though the GamesCom is already in full swing for three days.

Though I’m still interested in the project and I’m curious for what SimBin has in store, certain statement in this article disappointed me a bit: “…the new free-to-play title moves away a bit from Simbin’s die-hard sim approach, featuring a bit more forgiving physics. Not cool SimBin, if anything you should make them more hardcore.

    • Anonymous

For a free to play title, being more hardcore would be counterproductive. The whole intent of free to play is to have a large userbase, which hardcore physics won’t do.

I think there is a misunderstanding about that, it needs to be clear that for Gamescom, we decided to use the amateur driving model, which includes ABS and traction control. The final game will include Get Real driving model. Also, people here at Gamescom easily made laptimes around 1:28, where the optimal lap would put you around 1:22.5-ish, so the true potential performance of the car has yet to be experienced by the visitors.

GTR1 and GT Legends were the last games truley attempting to be hardcore by Simbin. Back in the day everyone new GTR2 was dumbed down. Since then, its only been rFactor, Game Stock Car and some Netkar Pro and iRacing. Since GTR2 Simbin has been the “lets make it easier and more accessable to people, but at the same time keeping that overall sim feel so we dont loose too much of the true sim crowd but at the same time gain a bigger crowd in the not so hardcore sim crowd, that way we’ll please both sides and people not into sims as much will think they are now playing a true hardcore sim, and people into sims wont leave because they will also think its still a true sim because we will keep that overall general sim feeling, that way everyone will be happy and well gain a bigger purchase group and make even more money” sim.

      • Big Ron

I stopped reading after “GTR2 was dumbed down”. Don´t know what you are talking about. It´s obvious today that it´s not dumbed down but compared to todays experiences even too hard to drive, especially at limits and catching slides is not really the most correct solution. And GTR 1 was way over the top.

      • Kendra Jacobs

LOL GTR2 was majorly dumbed down, there were forums after forums about it in 2006 and 2007 the first year or 2 after it came out. Then some guys went into the files and actually proved what everyone thought with actual numbers of physics files, attributes and all this stuff. There was also another group of people who realised this aswell and even made a specific mod to correct many of the simlified things that Simbin did with the physics look for NAP Mod.
In fact ill send you the link for an issue of auto sim sport and the mod (probably an older version of the mod Im not sure), There is a review about it in the AutoSim Sport issue I think (or maybe the next months issue with a more complete one, cant remember) and there is a seperate PDF Document in the NAP Mod Folder with some good info.

        Like for example….

————-“With the previous version of GTR, drivers would use softer suspension to gain as much mechanical grip from the tyres as they could with no concern for the aerodynamic balance of the car at high speeds.
This is an aspect that has definitely changed with the NAPMod physics mod. The front splitter and rear diffuser are now much more sensitive to pitch, yaw and rake. This means that, while softer suspension can make the car easier to drive at low speeds, it could result in aerodynamic unpredictability of the car at medium and high speeds.
This is because the softer suspension will cause the car pitch and roll as it progresses through braking, apex and exit, and these forces will effect the ride heights while on track on an almost constant basis. This creates a disturbance in the underbody airflow. When changes to rake occur due to pitch, the effectiveness of the diffusor is compromised, which can then have as large effect on the overall downforce being generated from the floor of the car. Obviously, the last thing anyone wants is for downforce levels to vary wildly during a lap.
When a very stiff setup is used, on the other hand, the car becomes much more predictable, grippier, and precise at medium and high speed; this is because it pitches and rolls much less. This keeps the chassis ‘flat’ to the ground, keeping ride heights, rake and wing angles consistent. Keep in mind though that the car will be harder to control at lower speeds, due to the stiffer setup.
Again, you must find the correct compromise for every track.” ————–
That is just one example of that many things that were dumbed down in GTR2 and corrected (or attempted to be corrected) by the NAP Physics Mod. As you can see theres TONSSSS more to a sim and handling and all the things that affects how your car is acting than just judging physics based on how you catch slides in it.

      • Big Ron

Your article is very interesting. And you are right, that compared to todays sims GTR2 hadn´t all the features. But compared to GTR1, GTR2 is more believable and cars are not oversensitive to control and therefor the more comprehensible sim, even if it still lacks some believable grip limit behaviors. As a side note: Aris is working for Kunos on Assetto Corsa, when I am right.

      • Kendra Jacobs

GTR1 had flaws when you were at the edge of grip and correcting bigger slides, in this area yes GTR2 was better. But as a whole I believe the driving dynamics and physics affecting the cars dynamics being driven around a track were MUCH better in GTR1 (although like I said the overly hard to correct bigger slides were definetely overdone and wrong and worse in GTR1).

I like Simbin and wish them all the best. Bit this is not going to be my cup of tea.
So probably its gonna be RF2 and AC for the coming years for me 🙂

Photoshop is an amazing piece of software. And Pro Tools too!

Are you following a mission on Virtualr to talk bad about everything and everyone, fanboy? There were enough guys in the last month who went against the community. We don´t need another one.

Opinion or not, but if you are just able to talk bullsh***, then you can also go right back where you came from.

      • Anonymous

I’m talking bad only about arcade poop, like AC and RaceRoom.

      • http://www.facebook.com/the.bastard.poet Alejandro Ramirez

A SimBin product that’s entirely arcade?

        Obvious troll is obvious.

      • Kendra Jacobs

Gotta admit, although I wouldnt call AC arcade, I am slighlty disapointed in it. It looks fabulous underbraking, but thats it. The lotus car looks to handle VERY similiar to the lotus in PCars, and that car in pCars is a joke.

  • Alejandro Gorgal

Car headlights look a bit too much like stickers, but other than that it looks pretty good, though to be honest Im not sure what to make of this game. Im still waiting for more info on GTR3

    • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

This seems to be what we’re getting instead of GTR3 from what I read at RaceDepartment.

      • Alejandro Gorgal

Wait woah, so that means that GTR3 proper has been canned?

      • Marco Hooghuis

        If there ever was one.

      • nameless

yes, I read that too on RD. i’m confused, what about the website gtr3.com, the P4/5 and Zonda screenshots branded as GTR 3? If that all turns out to be raceroom, I would be severely disapointed.

      • Anonymous

Maybe GTR3 content will be part of a Racerroom expansion. You know, like the Race 07 expansions.
As long as it includes all the content and features it’s supposed to I think it’s cool. But they might have a harder time marketing that compared to a standalone game.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Maybe. Be nice to know for sure.

    • Anonymous

I think its fair to say GTR 3 has become Raceroom 🙂

    • http://www.facebook.com/bennilava Benny Schreiber

that’s because the real judd bmw has got stickers as headlights. 😉

Regardless of the game, this looks like a great technology preview for Simbin’s new graphics and sound engine, the latter of which I’m very interested in! A teaser of what’s to come in GTR3?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1711429307 Chris Wright

Not what many of us were looking for, but with the sheer volume of great stuff heading our way, do we really care? We are soon going to be in the rare position of deciding which sim(s) we will support and which ones we won’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.ekkel Jay Ekkel

The build that is used at GamesCom is using the Amateur driving model (aids on). Maybe not a cup of tea for the Sim-Racers, but definatly required for most visitors @gamescom!

    • Anonymous

Why even bother with the wheel? Gamepads are enough for arcade racing.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Cos it’s not the best way to showcase a driving sim. Just a guess.

      • Anonymous

        But it’s not a sim.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

I will remind you to watch your language (read the Comment Rules at the top of the webpage). You curse way too often for my liking and it’s just not necessary.
So because of that I’m not going to grant you a reply to your post.

      • Alejandro Gorgal

Come on man seriously, this is Gamescon, not a sim racing conference.
Of course they are going to use all the driving assists they can. Even Kunos did the same with AC, they want to show you what the game is capable of but are very aware that the average gamer/journalist there has no idea how to drive a race car, it’s just common sense.
When you are presenting your game to a bunch of people that will then go and write about it you dont want them writing things like “this game is unplayable, I couldn’t keep the car in a straight line”. If you’ve ever read a review of a serious sim on a large media site like IGN you know exactly the kind of writers these guys have.

It’s just smart marketing, if you cant understand that then you are lacking some really basic concepts about how the real world works.

      • Philip Samuelson

… Oh I’m sorry, should I not be using my expensive wheel and 40 Inch LCD on GRID or NFS? I didn’t realize that was unacceptable. Hell I use the box shifter on my G25 every chance I get… Including in NFS Pro Street… Maybe I should rethink that 🙂

      • Anonymous

You must have never seen a GT or Forza demo at a convention…

Just cause they aren’t simmers, doesn’t mean they aren’t going to enjoy immersion. But you’re a troll, you already know and don’t care…

Perfect, may need a little gear wobble and backfire crack, in between shift ‘s , but I don’t think any other sim touches this so far.

    • Big Ron

      Amazing sound

  • nameless

is GTR 3 on hold or something? all I hear lately from simbin is about raceroom.

    • Marco Hooghuis

      There is no GTR3

  • http://www.facebook.com/wesley.modderkolk Wesley Modderkolk

Looking forward to this. Also these first 2 cars make it look ‘different’ compared to other sims, which all uses well known cars and tracks. Well I have never heard of this BMW Judd and also have never heard of the Aquila. Until now that is, if these two are truly representative of the whole car list then I cant wait to see the rest
