riches:
Framerate of 40 sucks, as it is completely not in sync with the most common refresh rate of 60hz of most LCD screens.
So if you want a fluid image, you always need 60+ fps.
Otherwise visual tearing or stuttering will occur.

There is a major contention with what the human eye can perceive. The common wisdom seems to be that despite the fact we see at X framerate, with video games, because it's not reality, the framerate needs to be higher.

Using iRacing the difference between 40 and 80 fps was marked. 40 was damn near unplayable. Which is odd given I had no issues at all playing GPL which was hard locked at 36.

Everything from 30 to 60 is good: 60 fps is ideal, but even with 30 you can drive properly. Visual tearing depends on the monitor. Obviosuly, running at fixed 30 or 60 with v-sync on is the best option (especially 60, something I try to reach everytime).
Triple buffer is there in order to avoid problems at intermediate framerate: with v-sync on and your refresh rate at 60, you'll see 60 fps, but if your graphic card can't handle the scene you will suddendly drop to 30, 15 and so on. If you turn triple buffer on, instead, your frame rate will always be capped at 60 as a maximum, but you can also have any other frame rate when the whole scene becomes heavier. That's why even 40 are ok, if you use v-sync and triple buffer.

UncleChuckle:
Ain’t nothing wrong with the current engine. I’d rather that and get 100fps than have a new shiny one and get 40.

Considering that having 100 fps is useless (human eye doesn't notice any difference above 60/65 fps), I would definitely prefer to have a new engine that runs at 40 fps, considering that it already is a good frame rate. :sd:
It's not only about graphics: our pc usually are much better now than 4 years ago and a new engine that properly uses multi-core cpus would certainly bring improvements in performances, giving the chance to push on the throttle with graphic too.
Do you remember what ISI wrote on their twitter, months ago?

Everything looks nice except cars are too dark and contrast. And there is no sky/environment reflection on them at all. No need to have it that flashy and exaggerated as it 's in shift and other games but not having it at all is not good either.

Keep in mind it isn't just about the graphics engine, there are many parts for a game engine, gfx is just one of them.

And yes a old engine can be bad, and can restrict you in many ways not just gfx wise, especially in future projects.

btw and to compare a 2d engine with a 3d engine isn't wise either, there is just no comparison.

But if you want a racing sim that is running on a 2d engine, go ahead, and have fun. ;D (nightmare is the better word for it, unless it's a sidescroller. :P )

RA2 is great. Hell, I'd still play Starcraft if my monitor scaled properly. (Thanks, nVidia. You suck.)

I don't even run at high detail. I can, but I'm a framerate whore:)

A love Race series. I don't mind old graphics engine, because they work a lot with particles + good physics.

Old graphics engine isn't equal bad thing. For example Red Alert series (I don't like RTS): Red Alert 2 looks friendly than 3 with ultra modern, effected, chaotic graphics.

 I think Simbin is trying to make up for the last batch of ugly screen shots with these edited ones, lol. I was actually glad that the last batch were unedited screenshots, that way we could see if there was any engine/or graphical updates. I want a new graphics engine as much as the next guy, but I don't mind not having one yet, gmotor is still pretty solid, VituaLM, Culmone, and Some1 keep reminding me of that. However I would like to see more unedited screenshots of Race On as there is plenty of time for edited screenshots after the game is released. Hell I love editing screenshots myself, but I'm more impressed with good looking unedited screenshots.

The Dodge in the dirt is a great one btw.

The first thing I have to say is congratulations for receiving exclusive screenshots from SimBin! =)
The other thing is: The screenshots are looking really great, what makes me sure that they are photoshopped, but there is a really interesting thing to notice: On the first screenshot, there is the Lizard Engine advertised, will the next SimBin title (after Race On) feature the new Engine? Or will there even be a patch for Race On? I personally don't think the game will be patched with an all-new engine, but the next title, maybe coming in late 2010 could feature the Lizard Engine, it's really time to introduce a new engine after just realsing one Add- on after the other year for year...
