As announced yesterday, Simbin and publisher bitComposer Games have released a demo version of the upcoming RACE On title, letting racers try two of the title’s new cars.
Included are both the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the Seat Leon TDI Diesel WTCC car which can be raced at Oschersleben and the Swedish Falkenberg track. Players can choose to complete a full race weekend including practice and qualifying or use the time attack mode.
The demo is limited to single-player only, an upcoming multiplayer demo has already been announced though.
RACE On has been announced to be released on October 22nd, the title will include all RACE07 content and brand new stuff including the 2008 WTCC season, the Swedish Touring Car Championship, US muscle cars and the Formula Master series.

I have the full version already, and it’s nothing special except for the really nice Formula Masters series, everything else – same old Race. Wonder what took them that long to make it.

There’s hardly a demo worth of content in the full version, how many refills do we need to buy before we see Lizard?
I have a theory, and maybe I’m wrong, but adding all these content expansions into the original game for free might have been a better idea both for sales and for the customers. If everything was integrated into one title there would be a more consistent online player base that would in turn provide more sales for the original Race 07 over a period of time than all these expansions put together. Instead the already minor community is perpetually fragmented with these new releases so there’s more servers but less players on each one, an illusion of a dead community, and less incentive to purchase.
Just a theory though, I guess I’ll get back to refreshing the server browser hoping for a bi-weekly round of Knutstorp with at least 5 people on it.

Hmmm, maybe I should be making a comparison out of this sim instead since it branched off from the same origin as Shift.
You mean to say though that Race On is not using the Lizard engine?
What’s the point in that!

I think SimBin is upto something Big on PC and they need these expansions for RACE 07 and DLCc for RACE Pro to sort of fund their ambitious project. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Only Simbin can answer that….but the revenue has to come from somewhere and they dont really have the luxury of being ISI. Atleast they have that deal with iOpener though, that looks promising.
For me Race On is just one too many recycled gmotor2 titles – seriously at this rate by the time they bring out Lizard on PC, THAT engine will be outdated.

Simbin are doing a GT car for the RTR beta project so they have big plans. Rumor is it’s GTR3 with LIVE races.
I’m glad to have Race ON to keep me ticking on until the big project is out.

race07 & stcc owners will have any possibility to upgrade with lower costs ?
because after testing this demo is like a expansion for that both sims… no one big change.
ok, only muscle and wtcc 08 cars, laguna seca & road america tracks… nothing that worths pay a full price on it :(

DW

I agree. While I suppose they might want to keep the “best bits” for the full version, I really think they should have pulled out all the stops on the demo to sell this, and included one new track.

October 9th, 2009 at 01:43
That’s exactly what’s wrong with Race On. The impression the demo gives is it’s more of the same. They’re relying on us to calibrate the force feedback again aswell. I thought from the pictures with tasty motion blur effects that we’d have an upgraded engine, but nope. Assumed the same with Volvo The Game too. I’m not sure I’ll be buying this afterall.

There is a good reason not to include new tracks in a demo. It’s called: piracy.
Lemming77
October 9th, 2009 at 04:06
Is that not a good enough reason not to release a demo at all? Why leave certain things prone to piracy but not some other stuff?

I really can’t believe they do that, using post processing effects to get sales is pathetic when people have to configure their own enbseries workarounds to get the same results. How can they be so lazy as to not add that graphical touch WHICH THEY ADVERTISE? It only takes me a minute but I do it every time I reinstal any gmotor title. I mean if you’re going to leave us with a decade old engine at least help us polish your turd a bit. The actual racing experience and feel of GTR Evo is better, according to my tastes, than iRacing, but that doesn’t mean I’ll shut up about all the flaws and shortcomings.

October 9th, 2009 at 07:03
The Seat is ok but there is already a Seat TDI mod elsewhere, and the Challenger drives like a barge…. as far as the Masters series goes there are endless open-wheel mods out there already for this engine, so why bother? I’ll pass unless and until this drops to $5 in the surplus bins. I’d love for the speculation about Race On being a mere tide-over while Simbin prepares something substantive to turn out to be correct, but I am not hopeful.

October 9th, 2009 at 08:39
SimBin clearly said that those screens were “artwork”, so at least we already knew that they were modified. There were no reasons to expect new graphic effectsin Race On.
By the way, I agree with you: when you have to modify a screen in order to make it look good (and not too outdated), probably it’s time for a (HUGE) change.

October 9th, 2009 at 12:51
Surprised they showed nice screen-shots with good colors and lighting. Don’t think it necessary have to be the post-processing to match the game to those screens. Just a few tweaks with brightness/contrast on textures and probably a few static light-maps to render shadows from environment objects and it would looks mostly the same.
The demo also makes a feeling they are using years old art and put not enough attention and time to everything. Even the sky texture placed with some odd zigzags.

The full version was already being pirated before the demo came out. Putting Laguna Seca or Road America in the demo would have no effect on piracy. But it might help sell the game.

Hi,
I have Race On full version integrated in my GTR EVO and the only good thing is to have Laguna Seca, Road America and Okayama and 2008 tracks as well. Regarding cars Formula Master are awesome… the rest it’s more garage and nothing special. Graphics are getting obsolete in GTR EVO. To gert them more real you need to use enb series. Physics as per everybody know are quite good.

The graphics may be outdated, but the demo still delivers good, solid racing. And it still has probably the best AI in simracing: you can enter a corner 2 wide perfectly well and not be punted off by the AI. I found it difficult to pass in the demo, since all cars are ‘driven’ by the same talent file and the pack is rather bunched up. You need to wait for the AI to make a mistake, which does happen.
I liked the Challenger: it’s something new and it sounds nice. The TDI SEAT… well… I don’t know. In a modern turbo diesel there is a very distinct feeling of the car being driven by the turbo. Actually, I’m surprised they don’t replace tachometers with boost gauges. Engine revs are meaningless, what’s important is boost. Without it, the car doesn’t seem to move at all. Race engines could be tuned differentely but I still think the SEAT feels weird

iRacing is a step up from the Gmotor based Sims, but it’s not massively different. When I switched back to GTR2 and Evo etc (as I couldn’t afford iRacing) I didn’t feel like I was going back to a poor simulation at all. In fact everything I’d learnt in iRacing translated and improved my driving in these other Sims.
And the Formula Masters cars are awesome. The graphics maybe dated to Shift and even iRacing (looks lovely without doubt)but at least you get an enjoyable and involving Sim with plenty of content for the cost of a couple of iRacings cars.
Don’t get me wrong, if had the money I’d do iRacing more, but it wouldn’t take me away from the Series racing etc that the very competent Race Series provides
.

Simbin release 1 or 2 addons for around £20-25 a year and you get lots of content and good online racing if you’re part of an organised club. iRacing requires a subscription, Broadband internet and additional cost for tracks and cars to compete. You need to keep your opinions in perspective. iRacing should be more realistic considering it’s cost. Simbin give you nearly as good an experience for a lot less. They are both excellent products that give value for money for different budgets.
