Prototype C – Porsche 956 At Mosport Video

The Virtua_LM Junior Team has released another preview video of their upcoming Prototype C mod for rFactor, showing us a quick lap around the Canadian Mosport Park in a Porsche 956.

Introduced in 1982, the 956 was Porsche’s answer to the new Group C regulations for sports prototypes. Powered by a 2.65l turbo-charged Flat-6 engine putting out 635hp, the 956 won the Le Mans 24 Hours as its first outing in the hands of Derek Bell Jacky Ickx. Aside from being campaigned by the factory, the car was made available to countless customer racing teams and (together with the 962 evolution model that followed in 1985) moved on to dominate prototype racing for almost a decade.

Combining both Prototypes and GT’s from three different classes, Prototype C for rFactor centers around the 1983 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. The mod includes legendary race cars like the Porsche 956, the Lancia LC2, the BMW M1 and countless other cars that are still considered to be among the most beautiful and spectacular sports cars of all time.

Well, with GT5 on the horizon, no one knows which will be released first.

Anyway, months or years, this mod will well worth the wait.

  • fxs

this is the best vaporware mod until now :happyevil:

  • DeDios

This is the car i’m waiting.

  • interchangeable

Sounds nothing like a 956…mind you by the time this mod(and GTX5 mod)comes out I’ll have probably forgot what one sounds like anyway.

  • GeraArg

The cockpit looks great!!!!!

  • Deano

I just popped wood seeing that.

  • Burgunder

[Insert Quasimodo voice] The speed, the speed.

  • commodore

All the passing makes the video cool.

  • Skillcoil

Nice mod cant wait for it.

The engine sounds seem to familiar to me. No offense, but it seems like Forza’s Porsche 911 sound :D

    Good Job !

  • RobinM

Sad to see that VLM Junior is just another modding group that prefers a “good looking mod” rather than a mod with “the whole package” (looks, feel and sounds)….
The sounds remind me to the good old NFS 5:Unleached.
However, the engine sounds in this video sounds more like a ‘modern’ flat-six, a 3.6 litre.
This vid has the real roaring and growling flat-six 2.65 litre turbo engine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yni-W7s3Hp4

I really hope these sounds are not the final version.

  • SergeantBoner

if you guys watch the Kremer CK5 video they posted last year you acctually have a more raw sound of the porsche engine, why they have switched to this sound I dont have a clue?!

The youtube video is a copy of a very old tape recording on a VCR. Recorded from a TV transmission. Also as you may know, old recordings loose most of the treble tones. In reality it is more likely that the VLM version is closer to the real life onboard sound than the youtube video.

  • aj_1986
  • CrippleHorse

The texture of the sound is pretty similar, the difference is that there’s plenty of treble cut plus some analogue clipping on the tape which always gives you the impression that the sound is “dirtier”. Maybe there’s a bit more presence on the low-mid frequences in the real car, that doesn’t mean the sounds on the mod are off.

Lots of over-dramatized statements in this thread. Even I get depressed reading it, imagine how it must make the modders feel.
You know, you can make a constructive comment, saying “I think the sound can become more realistic if…” yet you want to turn it into something like “It tears my heart that by realizing that one engine sound is not exactly as I expected, I have come to the unquestionable conclusion that this whole mod is about the looks and nothing else” or “When I bought rfactor 5 years ago I thought I had made a contract with V_LM that binds them to release this mod when I want them to”.
Seriously, is this a moaning contest?

  • RobinM

    @ibyte_dk
OK, you may be right about the quality loss in that one. Maybe this one will give a better impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ0OwnkXQUA.

    @CrippleHorse,
You are absolutely 100% right about those ‘complainments’ but the fact is that they are making the 3d models and skins as realistic and as detailed as possibe for the game. They want to make a good quailty mod so you could expect them to make the sounds as realistic as possible aswell. When seeing this video I notice that they really stress the ‘looking’ aspect of the mod. I am really dissapointed by that.
Giving a car more or less ‘fantasy sounds’ would mean the same to me as giving the car a whole fictional look and name it the Porsch 965.
I don’t get it why they should make sound this unrealistic for a mod that looks so wonderful.
OK, enough complaining for me now! I’ll just wait for the final version, I trust on the guys to make a quality balanced mod for everyone! :sd:

    @CrippleHorse

    +1

It’s so easy to criticize something if you haven’t been involved on its development… I could understant that better if you’d pay for that content, but that’s not the case. To motivate modders is good if you want to still getting mods for free :)

As i usually say: “If you think you can do it better then be my guest, any REAL help is always welcomed”

    Go on Virtua_LM!

    Regards

  • Firefox

    I agree with Cripplehorse.

This mod will contain almost all cars from the Group C era ranging from 1983 to 1993.
Do I care if the sound is a bit off on ONE car? No!
VLM Junior are doing all the can to combine quality with quantity and some times you have to compromise.
There aren’t many good recordings with high quality sound to make good samples from this era so everything can’t be correct.
Enough with this moaning on moaners
VLM Junior good luck with it! It looks the best!

  • spacekiller

@RobinM No offense, but from your comments about “realistic” mod it seems like you already tested it. Do not forget all the realistic factors like handling. I really dont know these wonderfull cars as well as you and other people in this discussion, but I would wait for final mod release to post judges like “only good looking mod”. Anyway, for me it sounds quite good and looks astonishing. From this clip it also seems that this car is really fast
Good work Virtua_LM, good luck with finnishing it…

  • Torino

Ah the “community”… If I were VLM, I would consider not releasing anything else out of spite. Come on.

It´s not the message mind you, I´m sure constructive feedback is welcome to most modders / developers… But the demanding tone is hard to swallow from where I stand, I can only imagine how the guy working for free feels.

  • moppenheimer

RobinM, Im curious as to when you’ve driven a 956?

  • RobinM

Ah come on guys! The only thing I am trying to say is that I hope for a good quality mod in 3 ways: looks, sounds and feelings. As for now I know the looks is something that is already outstanding quality but as for the sound I only say that it’s a point that needs to have a bit more attention atm.
For the physics, I don’t know yet, you’re right about that. But did I say anything about the lack of good physics? :weird:

  • moppenheimer

Its not what you said. Its the way you said it.

“Sad to see that VLM Junior is just another modding group that prefers a “good looking mod” rather than a mod with “the whole package” ”

That is why you’re an ass.

  • Torino

I´d say it´s not the criticism that is the problem, but the way you worded it. Afterall, “hope for” is quite different to “expect for”, or even “demand for”.

Keep in mind that it´s not always an issue of the modder not desiring to do things accurately. Sometimes modders dont have the necessary references to develop something with 100% fidelity. Sounds are particularly troublesome, and even more so with such historical machines. Just because you have some video on youtube doesnt mean you can produce good in-game sounds.

You might not realise it and most likely you dont mean it, but the way you made your point made you sound like a spoilt child. The sim-racing community is filled with that attitude unfortunately, and it cannot be a very stimulating environment for modders.

  • JAGUAR1977

I don’t like criticising anyone who’s providing something for free, but I really do believe major mods like PTC need to be released in managable service packs.

Once rFactor 2 hits all focus will be on that, so much so I’d be tempted to make PTC an rFactor 2 launch mod, skipping rFactor altogether.

  • Deano

Some of you are pretty pathetic making judgment calls about a mod based on a minute and a half video.

Sounds are no big deal, anyone with half a brain and a little modding skill can figure that out.

Or mabye your the one who likes to be spoon-fed and everything handed to you on a silver platter.

  • GeraArg

If anyone wants to hear something VERY similar to a 956 for only a few bucks :sd: , the CBX 1047 have the same sound :happyevil: :happyevil:
