Prototype C – Alba AR02 Preview Video

The Virtua_LM Junior Team has released a new preview video of their highly anticipated Prototype C mod project for rFactor, showing us the Alba AR2 prototype at Fuji.

Racing in the C2 class for smaller Group C prototypes, the AR2 featured a carbon-fibre monocoque and made full usage of ground effects, powered by a 1.9l four-cylinder turbo engine.

Combining both Prototypes and GT’s from three different classes, Prototype C for rFactor centers around the 1983 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. The mod includes legendary race cars like the Porsche 956, the Lancia LC2, the BMW M1 and countless other cars that are still considered to be among the most beautiful and spectacular sports cars of all time.

They could easily package this up as it’s own game it’s so professional, but to be taken with a grain of salt since I’m not entirely thrilled with those internal engine samples.

It’s probably 100% authentic but I’m just not hearing the powerrrrr! To explain better; they are too clean, I can hear all the nuisances of synthesization in them. But as far as the rest of the sounds go their on the top of their game as far as gMotor goes.

As with all the preview videos we’ve seen over the years the sounds imho are top notch. I don’t know how loud you expect a 1.9L four banger to be :)

When this mod finally arrive’s…my life will be complete.

It’ll probably get me a divorce too.

  • SergeantBoner

yeaah a four-pot smallturbo engine isnt excactly ‘thrilling’ in its sound! I feel we should wait for the Lancia’s or the flat-6′s of prosche to really get a ‘meatier’ sound, or perhaps an mazda rotary!

(the red car infront is a Grid S1, correct me if Im wrong?)

  • moppenheimer

(It is indeed the Grid S1)

I have to say, This will be incredible, I agree with Carbonfire, this could easily be standalone (and id gladly pay for it). :sd:

  • Uff

Alkaline Trio soundtrack at the beginning, oh yeah! Now I can concentrate on the rest of the video. :sd:

I fear the poly-count on that windshield-whiper alone will be enough to make my PC pass out … :weird:
Apart from that it looks and sounds great. I wouldn’t expect anything less, though, considering the amount of time that is put into this mod. How long is it? It was already announced for a while when I bought rFactor. Incredible!
But it seems we are getting closer, judging from all the stuff that is popping up lately … well, or at least they are still working hard. It will certainly be one of the best mods of all times!

Imho sounds great. Thanks for this update, i hope to drive it soon

this will never be released :happyevil:

Hearing the power…. Remember hat’s a C2 car powered by the builders bespoke Carma engine tuned for about 450bhp. I’d expect it to be no louder or harsher than a heavily restricted BMW turbo F1 engine (revving to only about 9000 rpm even on full boost, the Carma really wasn’t that noisy) or maybe an RS500 WTCC engine. I saw these cars run in period, and the BMW powered M88 6 cylinder and DFL powered cars were much louder. Actually the M88 powered cars like the Sauber C6, URD, Isolia, BMW M1 etc… were pretty much louder than anything else in the WSC back in the eighties with the possible exception of the Mazda.

All the turbos of this period were a bit muted because of the turbos presence on the exhaust between engine and outside world.

  • raisen1964

Oops…. This is the AR2. The Carma engine was the one financed by drivers Carlo Facetti and Martino Finotto in the AR6. Other remarks still apply though.

Raisen, you were right the first time. Here’s a summary of all the Albas and their respective power plants:

    AR2 – C2/Camel Lights – 1.9L Carma single turbo L4/Ferrari 308 V8
    AR3 – C2/GTP – 3L Cosworth DFV or 3.3L DFL
    AR4 – Camel Lights – Mazda 13B 2-rotor
    AR5 – GTP/Camel Lights – 3.9L DFL/Buick V6
    AR6 – C2/Camel Lights – 1.9L Carma single turbo L4/Ferrari 308 V8
    AR8 – GTP – Buick V6 turbo
    AR20 – C1 – Subaru F12/Buick V6

All the cars were based on the same basic chassis design, but the AR6′s ran updated front and rear bodywork. The Albas first ran in 1983 all the way until 1993, making them the second longest running design of the era after the 956 which ran (as the 962) until 1994.

ooooh that AR20 was a real stinker. At least the engine was. I don’t think that anyone ever managed to get the thing to run on all twelve cylinders in period.
The Carma engine I remember seemed to lose out on reliability in comparison with the DFL powered car too.
