Project CARS – Weekly Build Recap

Even though last week was cut short due to a bank holiday in the UK, a lot has happened in the Project CARS universe as several new development builds of Slightly Mad studios’ WMD-powered simulation have been released.

As usual since Car Physics Focus Testing (CPFT) has kicked off, all these builds are available for members with Team Member level and above!

Project CARS rapid development pace is also shown off by a new video of MotoGamesTV, showing the Pagani Huayra at Laguna Seca in the current build and exactly one year ago.

As you can watch below, all aspects of the simulation have massively evolved in the past 12 months, from graphics to physics and sounds.

Build 552 (30/8/13, Team Member+)
Render:
* Intrinsic SSE version of TransformBounds, now compatible with X64
* Moves primitive type set (more of a tidy)
WiiU:
* WiiU – fixup renderthreads for RVM and Envmap threaded threading
* WiiU SelectLod uses square root estimate fast-path
* WiiU: Changed error code in stubbed SaveGameManager code to prevent fatal whilst it’s w-i-p
Base:
* Debug: Updated BDbgAssert macro to create more optimised code in release
* Debug: Made ~BDbgMacroHelper inline to make sure it optimises out
* Maths: Faster version of the vanilla BMtx4f::Invert4x4 function
* Maths: Faster version of the vanilla BMtx4f::Transpose4x4
Physics:
* Group A Slick: Revised carcass using MFV-G as a guide. Most important change is a drop in longitudinal stiffness
* Fix for near camera debug triangle rendering
* Added support for triangle debug rendering
* Added new debug mode to render CSM in triangle mesh
Tracks:
* Volusia: Exclusion mapd and grass exclusion added
* Dubai: Fixed elevation issue in pitgarages, began replacing trees with proper style and position
Vehicles:
* Mercedes SLS AMG: New Wipers animation and mask done. Added Cockpit vibrations. Updated Cpit/LODA/B wipers meshes

Build 551 (29/8/13, Team Member+)
Physics:
* Moved common double buffer template to SupportPhysics
* Updated double buffering and locking in debug render
* Updated sand, gravel and dirt friction for updated friction model
* Group A Slick: Increased peak slip angle location a bit
WiiU:
* Instance renderering CPU submission optimised
* WiiU – remove alphatest state setting – not required now shader alphatest is aligned with DX11
* WiiU specific versions of background textures @ dxt1, 720, no mips
Render:
* Updates for Cuda management with Generic Prims
* Removed overriding stuff from techniques that was causing all sorts of render state issues
* Changes debug triangles to use no z test
Career:
* Calendar races now select the round properly when launching, and updates the current date. Series resuming disabled until Career/Seasons are separated in scripting
* Adding placeholder RaceModeInfo for championship races. Fixes bug with the pause and EOR menus not appearing in Seasons and Career, but has some debug asserts that will need looked into
Tracks:
* Volusia: new ground cover added, broad texture and material tweaked accordingly, wet road added, initial outer terrain, overlay lofts to better match Luis’s road changes, CSM tweaks, fixed gaps between roads and terrain, merged latest stuff from JanP and TomasT, ground cover added, add textures for emergency garage, add textures for outbuilding
Vehicles:
* BMW M3 E30 Group A: One last default setup to try for the CPFT

* BLog: Ensure all log writes are done via a properly aligned buffer
* WiiU: Update Keyboard handler to maintain state history properly
* WiiU: Added handling of keyboard overflow state from OS
Camera:
* Added an experimental track cam delay for Stephen to tweak. This causes a delayed lerp in listener position when changing cameras
Render:
* Fixes for DX11 quads, lines and triangles
* Added thread tests. Updated render init
Tracks:
* Dubai: Colour match pass, layout matched to latest ref pics, opened pit garages, added pit exit chevrons, updated csms, removed trucks and tents from backstraight and added cones in the areas where the tyres were before to seperate the various layouts of Dubai
* Eifelwald: New export
Vehicles:
* Mercedes 190E: Put tire sizes back to 63cm all around after more research

The new build is now exclusively available via Steam as the trusted Project CARS launcher has been retired.

There are two brand new CPFT (Car Physics Focus Testing) events this week as well as members are encouraged to provide detailed physics feedback on the brand new Mercedes 190E Evo2 DTM at Suzuka and the Lotus 98T at Mugello. Members that participate in CPFT also qualify for a position in pCARS Rank.

Project CARS is coming to the PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii U in 2014. More info can be found on the WMD website.

    Dat car movement. -_-

Better practise, your getting slower :)

  • Aleksei Kolesnikov

SMS impudently deceived all Junior Members for what to them an eternal shame. They promised once a month the full copy of a product, as a result nearly a year don’t let to testing of the new cars, new routes. Every month to download a simulator only to look certain updatings of the interface? No, thanks.

  • Anonymous

You weren’t promised a full product, the perks list clearly states that “Exclusive Cars & Tracks” are part of the higher membership tiers and this is exactly what’s happening.

You paid 10 Euros, that’s less than 25% of the retail price of a normal game and you got a large selection of cars & tracks for it. Please look at other sims and see how far 10€ get you there. Not to mention that you will get a discount on the final product and receive returns from the sales as well!

I don’t think you are in a position to complain and accuse SMS of deceiving you. It’s a matter of logic, if you make the smallest possible commitment, how can you expect to get all the perks?

Furthermore, you don’t only get interface updates. You get a fresh version of the game every month, including all updates (graphics/physics/sounds etc.) for the cars & tracks Juniors have access to.

  • Aleksei Kolesnikov

I could pay more, than 10 Euros if at once it was specified, what not all cars and routes will be available to Junior. It not greed question! It was told that Junior Members receive the FULL version once a month, without any restrictions.

  • Dylan H.

    What part of:

“You weren’t promised a full product, the perks list clearly states that
“Exclusive Cars & Tracks” are part of the higher membership tiers
and this is exactly what’s happening.”

    Do you not understand?

  • Anonymous

I don’t know who told you that but it surely wasn’t SMS.

Again, the list of features & perks clearly states that there are exclusive cars & tracks for higher up members. How would this be possible if Juniors would get access to everything like you claim?

I’m sorry you have been misinformed but that’s certainly not SMS’ fault.

  • Anonymous

Shameful post! You should be happy for all they have done for your 10 euros. I can respect people having a tough time financially and thus have no problem with the jr membership. I do however have much problems with blatant lack of gratitude.

  • Anonymous

The chase view can look a little funky in a few titles and thus is why some developers have opted not to have it. Still it has nothing to do with how the car drives

  • Aleksei Kolesnikov

I will be happy when all will fulfill properly the obligations! If to me say that I will have a full copy of a product, but is rare, I buy it because it isn’t necessary for me often new version and I am not going to participate in its development. Exclusive cars for Team Members? Yes, I read it, only didn’t think that “exclusive” means “all cars”

  • Anonymous

I’m starting to believe that this is a matter of something being lost in translation here to be honest.

Again, you weren’t promised to get a full product, certainly not by SMS.

  • Anonymous

Firstly the free copy started with Team Member in the beginning and was changed when the community opted for a Box Copy version and a new member level(Full Member) was created to compensate for the costs of doing a boxed copy. Your asking SMS to basically give their work away. They are not modders and produce retail products that has to draw some kind of a profit and if enough profit is obtained your copy may very well end up being free after you have received the total amount of your benefit. If this does not work for you there are members of SMS you can contact to see what will work for you.

  • Dylan H.

All cars? So you don’t have any cars as a junior member?

That’s quite sad in a racesim.

  • Realkman666

What’s the excuse for the inside view?

  • http://virtualr.net/ F1Racer

Chase view should be banned from replays in racing sims :) It’s awful.
Plus the replays were not sync’d up. What’s with that ?

  • GOAT

I also have the same issue that Aleksei has, When I joined it was stated that a full update would be avail for all members at the end of each month. It may have been my misunderstanding that this did not include all cars and tracks, I thought the higher levels got you instant access to the new content and returned more money for your investment when game was sold. I tried to get the game to work on my machine but there were so many issues in the beginning that i did not test it much. It was so frustrating and time consuming that I decided to wait a while. When screen shots started looking better I installed again and I didn’t get most of the content that is shown in the screen shots. After a week or more I finally figured out that you need to be a team member to get the content and upgrades were not allowed.

I agree with Aleksei, this sucks for me and others like us. I know that the Government has tied SMS hands but it still sucks. It is so frustrating that I don’t even try the Sim anymore.

What do you mean? Do you have pCARS? Are you a member? While running the game in cockpit view on track it’s what you would expect it to be like which carries more weight than a replay. I don’t drive replays I drive sim cars.

  • C4

Doesn’t say that many cars and tracks are unavailable forever (they are, if that’s correct?). One more sentence would have cleared this up :)

  • Anonymous

    With that car too?

You do get a full update once a month and all non exclusive content. I can understand your frustrations. Life is full of them. You chose your path of membership and if you did not fully understand the terms at the time you joined misunderstandings happen all the time and sometimes we just have to live with them. I’m not saying you have to like it but to blame SMS is the wrong path to choose. All I can say is I hope you enjoy the content that is available to you and until and if funding is opened for next gen platforms what we have now will not change and sadly enough Jr’s are stuck with that. There is nothing anybody can do about it at the present time not even SMS themselves.

  • BackMarker

Was the list that the birdddog posted in effect when you joined pCARS? Do you receive monthly builds for Junior Members? As Montoya says above it sounds like something was lost in tranlsation and SMS did not clearly spell out that you, as a Junior Member, would not be receiving access to exclusive tracks and cars in the monthly build. Though it is implied only if you read all of the text in the other access options to pCARS.

Not the end of the world. There are other games you can enjoy until the full version of pCARS is released, yes?

  • Anonymous

Huh? I want to fully understand what your saying but ATM I don’t. Also I have not driven the Huayra in quite some time so I guess I cannot give you an up to date opinion on it.

  • Anonymous

I know a lot of physics testing is going on but even as a Full Member since the beginning I can’t tell which car should be considered the flagship. Many cars in the past felt great and have since changed (the nature of these things). I don’t play it much because multiplayer has dried up waiting for the physics changes to settle and normalize. Glad to see Nic Hamilton and Ben Collins are doing tons of testing, though.

  • GOAT

“You choose your path of membership and if you did not fully understand the terms at the time you joined…”"

That is the problem, when we joined the membership stated you can upgrade at any time (not true anymore). As you stated the memberships have changed from the beginning and this causes frustration as well. The problem could be lessened if fewer cars are deemed “Exclusive”. I do understand where things are now but some of the blame must go to SMS and some goes to people like me.

  • Anonymous

2 things happened the game became fully funded which was always stated that tool pack purchases or upgrades would no longer be possible once this happened. The second thing that happened is the FSA forced SMS to stop the funding model that was introduced at the initial release of the WMD structure and a new funding model is being put into place for all future funding.
If you do not like the way things are don’t short change yourself next time. I am not at the highest tool pack level and I only expect the people above me be catered to before I am just a fact of life.

  • GOAT

Yes i know, I failed to keep up to date with the status of things.

  • Ross Siggers

To be blunt…you can’t read. Honestly the description that’s given of the member tiers is easily clear enough to understand what content you’re getting with what level of membership, if you weren’t entirely sure maybe you should have double checked with someone else.

  • Anonymous

I haven’t updated in a long time, and I finally started up the latest build….

That SLS. I love the way that car drives. It feels a little over-boaty, but it actually seems to drive pretty good. Also the sounds seem to be a lot better, and the graphics as always are looking great. I just hope they get the rest of the cars to the level of the SLS, then this game will be great.

  • Big Ron

The excuse is the nature of people using way to low “world environment”-settings making the cam flying perfectly alligned and even to the track and the car becomes an independent object looking like it´s wobbling around. I absolutely hate this setting, it makes pCARS looking ridiculous.

You should send them an email.
