Project CARS – New Trailer + Development Update

WMD member JonZ has created a stunning new Project CARS video trailer.

Meanwhile, there’s loads of development activity in the World of Mass Development forums as Project CARS moves closer to it’s late 2014 release.

In terms of content, a brand new car has been added as an early version of the Mercedes Benz C Class DTM Coupe is now available in the development builds, other cars to join Project CARS soon include the 1972 Ford Escort RS1600, the Ginetta G40 Junior as well as the Ruf CTR3.

A bit further down the road are additions such as the Mercedes Benz A-Class AMG and the BMW 320TC WTCC whose development have recently kicked off.

On the track side, the laser-scanned version of Oulton Park is shaping up while the Circuit de la Sarthe, home of the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, is being focused on as well, alongside several other tracks that are currently progressing well.

Aside from on-going content & physics work, other substantial areas of development focus include the title’s User Interface that is currently being completely revamped as well as well as first successful tests of the 64-bit version of Project CARS!

Slightly Mad Studios are not just working on Project CARS though, the studio has also announced an upcoming MMO racing title – World of Speed.

Created in co-operation with My.com, the title will be free to play, a beta of World of Speed is due to launch later this year. If you want to have your arcade fancy tickled, make sure to check out World of Speed here.

Project CARS will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam OS, and Wii U starting Fall 2014. More info can be found on the WMD website.

whats happened with pcars logo ? :(

  • http://khaistatus.com/ Khailani M

I liked the old one more as well. :/

  • Anonymous

Love the Trailer! I was not aware this is the new logo? Seems it needs more work IMO as it is pretty plain Jane if you ask me

  • Anonymous

I like the new logo, looks more modern, seems like WoS is using the old ‘S’ logo.

  • Anonymous

Visually pCars absolutely have raised the bar quite high. Hopefully the physics will live up to the expectation of the majority of simracers as it will be impossible to satisfy all of them. Congrats SMS! you make me proud being a member of WMD since “day one”

  • Glen Orpheus

yeah I’m feeling like this could just be a more track racing version of GRID 2, don’t get me wrong though, i loved GRID 2 for its arcade fun, but everyone on PC is really looking for something along the lines of Forza, only with better physics ;)

  • Glen Orpheus

i hope they are spending more time on the physics and handling of the cars as they are spending on hyping up the game with lots of flashy vids that don’t actually show any real game footage.

  • Anonymous

    SMS aren’t making the videos.

  • Project CARS Italia

Trailers and screenshots are made by the WMD members using gameplay material only.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

It handles nothing like GRID2. The racing career is almost like Race driver but you can race any car on any track, obv. Their ethos towards physics is taken a lot more seriously then codemasters.

  • Anonymous

Those are real game footage providing you have powerful PC. Even with my lower than average machine pCars still looks stunning.
Lower than average PC means I can only run on everything low, no AA, no bloom and high only on texture and car detail

  • Glen Orpheus

so just out of curiosity, what does it handle like, i have pretty much all racing sims on the pc, so what would you compare it too please.

  • Glen Orpheus

yes ok, maybe it is real game footage with hours and hours spent on finding the correct camera position, lighting, reflections, shadows etc, you get the point, but what its not showing us is the game footage that we will all experience when we actually play the game. i wish i had access to the beta but alas i was to late :(

  • Project CARS Italia

Have you ever heard of a thing called YouTube?

This is one of the first results I had searching for a recent build gameplay:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndVeofZOAgs

  • Glen Orpheus

so what does you tube have to do with physics and handling of the cars ? (“,)
don’t get me wrong, i’m more than likely to buy the game and enjoy it, i’m just worried that like GRID 2 the fancy graphics become more of a part of the game rather than the handling and physics.

  • Chris Karsten

I might just get a PS4 for this.

  • F1Racer

” but what its not showing us is the game footage that we will all experience when we actually play the game.”

That’s what YouTube will do. If you want to know what the physics and handling is like you will have to try the game for yourself.

  • Anonymous

    Assetto Corsa. But more realistic.

  • Glen Orpheus

please tell me how i can play then please ?

  • LogiForce

If I really had to compare (there is little comparison material out there)… somewhere between and above iRacing and Assetto Corsa, but in my opinion a bit better than that. It is somewhere in the middle of those, yet closer to Assetto Corsa Physics wise. Yet a level above it all, especially when you start to notice the little and sometimes subtle differences.
Force Feedback wise pCARS is well ahead of both as the FFB is directly generated from the Physics engine. No canned effects are used, everything is pure.

Of course gameplay wise it is a different game altogether from these two. With that I mean how you can start a career, or how rules and regulations are implemented. Those kinds of things. Everything unrelated to car behaviour, but still related to the gaming experience.

  • Glen Orpheus

    nice vid (“,)

  • Glen Orpheus

wicked i play both of those…..thats just the answer i was looking for….thanx (“,)

  • Glen Orpheus

Assetto Corsa i love, so if it really is like this then hurry up and take my money all ready (“,)

  • Project CARS Italia

Next Christmas you will buy the game and you’ll be able to play it. :)
Probably SMS will release a demo earlier, to allow all of you guys to try the game before the release date. But it’s not confirmed yet.
Anyway, Glen, YouTube is full of HD gameplay’ videos. The most recent builds are 660 and 661, so look for these numbers to see the last stage of development of the game.

As for your other questions, Project Cars will be a racing simulation and the target is to become the best racing game both on PC and consoles.

  • F1Racer

Well as you didn’t get it when you had the chance you will now have to wait until either the game is released or a demo becomes available as it is still being developed.
The only other option is to base it off other peoples opinions, but you will find those are extremely varied.

  • Glen Orpheus

thanx for the info, and i really hope you achieve your target (“,)

  • Pascal

for me it’s not as good as AC or rF. It’s getting better, but it’s not done yet.

  • Jaimy Mewe

pCARS has the worst FFB of all sims right out the box. It`s what keeps me from playing it longer then 10 minutes. I hope pCARS get the succes it deserves, but both physics wise and FFB wise it`s behind AC imo…

  • LogiForce

Funny as the FFB feels exactly how the feedback feels in my own Lancia Delta.
I use a T500 with 350mm steering wheel attached. What do you use? And what is your biggest complaint after trying the latest build?

  • blastx

Meh i dunno whats with pCars but it has something that doesnt make me enjoy it. It has that Shift 2 feel which i hate. So far Forza 4&5 and Assetto Corsa are the only racing games that put a smile on my face.

  • Guest

It is nothing like AC or RF2. It is miles behind in FFB and phisics!

  • Anonymous

Did you get payed bay SMS?

  • LogiForce

I think he payed SMS by joining WMD, not the other way around.

I find it funny that all you guys out there complain about the game publicly, but there seem to be so few who actually are constantly involved with the game internally.
Maybe instead of saying it is funny, it is sad. Getting the chance to improve the experience of something by involving yourself in the development process, yet not grabbing it (or at least not grabbing it firmly enough).

Oh well… let’s see how the masses like it when we throw the game at the wolves. lol
I think there might just be people among us here who are more into a semi-sim style of game than they are consciously willing to admit. Since some here under this article say they actually like Forza better as it puts a smile on their face. Which I think might just be AI related, which is still under construction in pCARS.

  • rthki

I haven’t had much time to play pcars recently but I could never get the ffb to feel right on my G27. Other than that I find the game a lot of fun.

Oh, and the masses will like anything so I don’t really see your point there.

  • Anonymous

They recently changed the UI (for the 3rd or 4th time) and it has a weird neon scheme. I really don’t like it. I don’t know why they can’t just pick a UI where everything is displayed. It’s function following form.

  • Jaimy Mewe

There is no Lancia Delta ingame, so i can just as well say it feels nothing like my Cirtoen Berlingo. I use a g25, and in every other game i have a very convincing feeling of what`s happening with the car/tires. I`d say AC does this the best, and pCARS just feels unconnected, lifeless and very stiff. It`s like you`re driving a car on wooded wheels. I have tried all of the tire compounds and none convince me. The physics are really decent, it`s just not comming trough and making the whole experience more “gamey”instead of the feeling of driving a sim.

  • Anonymous

I think your miles behind in spelling!

  • Anonymous

Well I don’t drive the UI but no I don’t like too much about it. Khailani’s was way better IMO!

  • Anonymous

Well I do think Kunos has the best tread model going but don’t know if it has as complex of characteristics as what other developers are trying to achieve which I have not bought into yet since I still prefer the last gen of tire technology more from GTR2 or rF1. AC is evey bit as good as NKP in regards to tire which IMO was the best of it’s gen.

  • Anonymous

Anyway I still think it is possible for SMS to get it all together and shape the complexities of it’s tire into one that can compete with AC’s

  • LogiForce

A gear driven wheel. Let me guess… feels floaty?

The floaty feeling is to blame on the Logitech wheel. The G25 is far worse though. It’s due to the motor mounted position sensor and the spacing between the teeth of the gears.
Depending on the amount of damper (AC uses a lot of it I believe) and the way the FFB is done, this feeling can be removed. You will need canned FFB effects for this to achieve that goal though, as you can not rely on purely Physics based FFB effects.

Anyways, that’s just my experience with my G25. I own a lot of wheels though. Wingman Formula Force GP, G25, T500, CSW beta and CSW retail basis.
Enough at least to compare the FFB effects, and strangely enough there is far more slack in the gears of my G25 than my old gear driven Formula Force GP wheel.

Anyway, maybe SMS can do something special for the G25/27 users out there and put a bit of canned effects in there for the G25 and G27 steering wheel profiles.

  • Michael Hornbuckle

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I know the year is still new, but that is the best joke of the year by a mile.

The game is pretty though, but right now it is all icing with no cake…

  • LogiForce

This is due to a lack of damper. AC uses a lot of damper.

The reason the G25 (and G27) feel floaty as you describe is because the position sensor is motor mounted and there is a lot of room between the teeth of the gears.
Plus not everyone might know this, but Logitech has build in a forced deadzone into the G25 and G27 wheels. This is build into the firmware of these wheels. Wheels that cannot be flashed like the Fanatec or Thrustmaster wheels.

So I blame it on the actual hardware in this case and Logitech. Especially since my old Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP gear driven wheel has a lot less slack and absolutely no deadzone build into it.

What I meant to say with the car reference was that on my T500 I feel the bumps, kerbs and other road noises and effects as I do in my Lancia Delta. I have a late 90s model with powersteering, but it is minimal powersteering.
So yeah, it’s the way the road effects are communicated to you through your wheel. Mind you this differs greatly on a per wheel basis because of the hardware differences.
I own a Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP, G25, T500, CSW Beta and a CSW Retail. So I can do some good comparisons when I need to, and each have their clear hardware and/or firmware issues.

Currently my gear of choice is. T500 wheel (with 350mm rim via DSD adapter), CSPv2 pedals, CSS SQ shifter. This combination feels the best and most accurate to me out of all the gear I have here, and that in any game out there.

  • Glenn Briden

Well the game is almost 1 year away and the talk sounds like it is a finished product Yeah Physics and FFB are not Great right now but there is no point setting everything up right until you have ALL the content there to work with or you just keep RE-Doing everything. Give it time when they get to tweaking I am sure things will improve.

  • Markus Ott

At least the months of truth are coming closer. After years of guessing if SMS can do it I think that around August/September physics and FFB need to come together and all the missing features should be in the game and ready for some final tweaks. Do or die for SMS when it comes to the sim racing crowd. And I think SMS will blow the competition.
Still I regret we won’t see an online service like iRacing has.

  • Anonymous

“lifeless and very stiff. It`s like you`re driving a car on wooded wheels” pretty much just the opposite of most criticism. Which say the cars are floaty, with tires that are too spongy. Obviously got to take such criticism with a grain of salt. Humans?!

  • vilivili

I agree about the FFB and physics

  • Anonymous

I still have my old G25. pCars feels fantastic to me. I also have AC and rFactor2. While all are somewhat different. They are all believable. Without being a real race driver with tons of experience. I wouldn’t dare say which is most real. They each have their plus’ and minus’.

  • Anonymous

Do you get payed by their competitors?

  • Mar Mar

Flat design. Everyone is using it.

  • Anonymous

pCars already runs better than AC on my computer. With higher graphic settings and 30 AI I get over 60 FPS. With lower graphic settings and only 15 AI in AC, I get 30 FPS. It’s no contest.

  • bduddy

UIs often come out bad when developers try to make them work for both PC and console…

  • Anonymous

Omg those are the M3 Challenge engine samples from years ago! (SMS made them) My ears never forget the amount of time I spent driving that mod lol.

  • Jaimy Mewe

How do you explain the uncanned FFB of AC feeling perfect then? That`s not a matter of so called “damping”, but just the way the FFB is coded, it`s just way more informative and convincing then what pCARS has to offer. rf2 also feels amazing, probably even better then AC. Both games feel far better on my old g25 then on 2 of my friend`s their g27`s btw. My g25 is far more direct and alive then any g27 i`ve ever tried. My problem is that pCARS as a sim has never felt convicing, and i`ve been there right from the start. It`s a great and beautiful racing game, but sim? For me not so much. I`d like to be proven otherwise when they finish up development though.

  • nicknickerson

i would really like to see proper triple screen fov controls. It really killing the enjoyment for me :-(

  • Anonymous

    phisics

  • vilivili

the trailer is very very nice!

  • Mario Strada

You are so wrong. I have my own list of gripes with pCARS, but even on my 5 YO (paid $4K) machine the graphics are stunning.

  • Glen Orpheus

maybe it was my own expectations of what GRID 2 was going to bring to the table that led to my own disappointment, and yes, after my experience with quite a few sims i have to agree CODEMASTERS really design their games to be played on a Pad first and wheel support just seems to be put in to grab the attention of us wheel users.

I really wish i could of had access to PROJECT CARS, but i only just built my monster gaming PC 6 months ago and was unable to join up.
anyhow i’m guessing and seeing a similar pattern to the COD and BATTLEFIELD debate, some people like this some people like that, but at the end of the day both of the companies involved with these games have proved there is room for BOTH ;)

looking forward to what PC will bring to the table, and i wish them luck in achieving their goals.

  • MrNone

btw, where is World of Speed annuncement here ?

  • Markus Ott

    It is in the news…

  • Anonymous

WoS is a pure arcade game, so I assume that’s why it isn’t getting articles here. It’s from a sim developer so it got a footnote in this article, but I wouldn’t expect ongoing news.

  • Anonymous

Exactly, WoS dosen’t really fit the VirtualR profile, that rule even applies to SMS titles ;)

But I included it in this article so sim racers who are into arcade fun can (and should!) definitely check it out :)

  • C4

Not this sh.. again. Everyone gets angry if you call SMS arcade games arcade.

  • Traumahound

    THE moment: the flying E30!

  • Anonymous

It hasn’t been released for enjoyment yet. Just for testing!

  • Anonymous

Not covering some arcade games doesn’t really fully serve the Sim Racing Community. No coverage here of “Next Car Game” either. Has features no other Sim has. Is great fun. Sims developers & modders might learn a thing or two from it. You should add an arcade section. As they often have Sim elements that are missing from our favorite Sims.

Just make Pcars physics like Enduracers (rfactor) for modern cars & like HistorX GT&TC (rfactor) for classic cars & make it worthwhile.

oh !!! so no flame war then :(
