Project CARS – New Build Available & Contest Open!

Slightly Mad Studios have released a new development build of their WMD-powered Project CARS title and kicked off an exciting hot lapping contest to go along with it.

Since it’s the first Friday of the month, build 106 is now available for all members, including Juniors. The build includes several significant improvements, spearheaded by the brand new Caterham R500 Superlight.

The British lightweight sports car is powered by a 263hp engine, giving the car an impressive power to weight ratio that makes it a favorite of every sports car lover.

Furthermore, the new build also introduces the leaderboard feature that allows Project CARS users to track their lap-times and compare their performance to the rest of the community.

In related news, the studio has just launched a hot lap competition in co-operation with gaming website Eurogamer. The player setting the fastest time on the short Watkins Glen layout in the Caterham R500 Superlight gets to visit Slightly Mad Studios’ London office to design his personal dream track with the SMS team.

For more info on the competition click here, all members including Juniors can join the contest. Junior membership is available for the one-time price of 10€ and entitles users to monthly development builds and up-close access to the Project CARS development process in the WMD forums.

They should employ Nvidia’s FXAA to clean up that specular aliasing if they’re not planning that already.

    It’s already implemented.

Argh, I’m still on the fence about this one. It looks spectacular and it seems that most people like it but can someone give me a good overview of it? Does it still have steering wheel lag, and how are the physics compared to, say, iRacing?

    Thanks!

Polishboy808, I’m own a G25, and i can tell you that in my whell there isn’t any wheel lag, you need to tweek a litlle bit to be perfect. About the physics it’s look more close to a sim, it’s early to say about the final product, but if you want to compared, for me it’s close to the SimBin titles(GTR Evolution, Race On).

Another build, another car :)  Looking forward to trying the good old Caterham.
The concept of this project should be a dream for sim-racers.

Biggest improvement yet for me with this build. Gumpert feels phenomenal! Some real fidelity to the FFB. Bathurst is coming along very nicely

How does it stack, physics-wise, against the LFS’ Caterham?

The steering lag is not noticeable anymore. It hasn’t been for some time. There is a bit of a “visual” steering lag but after a while it doesn’t bother me anymore. I had to turn off all the perspective effects as they bothered me. Once they get the multiplayer ready to go it will be  great fun to drive it. For now, IO spend about 2 or 3 hours a week testing the cars art the various tracks and, while there are some issues, such as the karts looking like hovercrafts, it’s already a very solid piece of work.

The interface is also improving but I find the garage still very confusing. Some of the values in the garage have no correlation with RL and in some cases I can’t even tell if I am increasing or decreasing something. Also, you can only save a limited number of setups, one per track and one per category of racing.
Some of the cars still need some work, but I love driving the 68 lotus and the DTM car.

The biggest issue at the moment is setting the steering properly. It can be time consuming with a lot of trial and error. But they are aware of it.

so the dream is over no laser scanned tracks as standard. I wonder if iRacing will ever get some sort of competition.

I only get lag with low FPS. I avoid using MSAA to keep the framerate and other graphics settings high.
FXAA is a better option although they need to tweak it right now as it makes the image bit too blurry.
They are working on a new underlying control system which should be perfectly responsive regardless of FPS.

Physics realism varies from car to car as they are all constantly being tweaked and in different stages of development. But mostly they are a pleasure to drive, I love the Radicals (“Racers” until they are licensed) myself.

Don’t feed him, just ignore him and he will grow bored of being ignored eventually

Why are so many people stuck up on laserscanned tracks? Are you gonna take your VW Polo around the world to test your knowledge of them?

    I’d say, doubtfull…

can report that the game has made a HUGE HUGE Step forwards from the very first build i played. They’ve completely transformed the menu system, ffb, and there IS NO STEERING LAG.
HOWEVER….the controlling is still not right – problems with ingame rotation versus actual rotation etc….making the cars impossible to play properly until they fix it. All the cars in the game are stuck on 900 degrees, even if you try and configure outside in the profiler.
its in discussion, hopefully they get that fixed.

Don´t know the LFS Caterham, but the GT5 Caterham. The CARS-Caterham just feels wrong at the moment. It´s the first physic stage and a configured tire physics. So it´s not what you would expect to be a Caterham. It´s sliding and oscillating from one side to the other. But just waiting for more updates, till over a year till final stage. I think, they will get it right.
