Project CARS – Lots Of New Community Previews

The highly busy WMD community has put together another big batch of Project CARS previews.

Many of the previews of Slighly Mad Studios’ community-powered simulation show off a new feature of  the title’s fully-dynamic weather system: Thunderstorms & lightning!

All the previews below have been made using the current development builds of Project CARS that are now available to all members via Steam.

Project CARS is coming to the PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii U in 2014. More info can be found on the WMD website.

Yes I know we get a lot of screenshots for pCARS but tell me a good bit of them are not some of the best screenshots you have ever seen? Remember the fact that this is a community driven title having these screenshots posted here means a lot to their creators and the community as a whole and I wish that the lot of you would very much enjoy them as well.

You’d be surprised, that VirtualR doesn’t preview pCars screen shot as much as other sites, namely Bsim racing, they show more pCars screen shots more than you get here.

    Screenshot simulator 2013

    • Anonymous

i tried it last week (again), and yep. The handling is still pretty terrible sadly, but we will see how it goes as they progress.

      • Aleš Přibáň

Screenshot simulator 2013 hehe… I tried it last weekend and also wish to be driving feel same good like the screenshot looks :) Some cars and tracks and daytimes looks really interesting to me, but..

      • Kendra Jacobs

some areas are improved but others are still need for speed shift physics. Feels like an arcade console game with a half decent attempt of a physics mod by some dude in his basement. PCars isnt a sim, you can even play the original netkar namie or live for speed or an ISI f1 challenge 99-02 mod and feel much more sim physics in their driving despite some of their flaws, than you do in pcars.

      • Huib Reijnders

What kind of cars do u race in real life? Did u win alot?

    • Anonymous

1 blurry screenshot gets released for Assetto Corsa and people throw money at their screen. Show several community-sourced photos of various features of Project CARS and everyone sees it as the worst thing in sim racing.

    • Anonymous

be careful what you say, you’ll have the wolfs, chomping at your feel, as always when something negative is said about this game.
Regardless I’m Purchasing this sim only because I like this site, and in support of rob.

      • Anonymous

I guess you would know, Melanie. People don’t get pissed when they say something like the colors look oversaturated. They get pissed when somebody is OBVIOUSLY trolling with a comment like Damien’s.

      • Anonymous

I don’t care what people get pissed about, I agreed with him, just because I can, as long we follow the posting rules here on VirtualR, who cares what you or others think, it’s only those that have spent money invested in this game that are getting p’ed off at the negative comments.

        If we’re honest, Thank You.

Are you that tone deaf? People debate on here all the time with regards to this and other sims – that’s what the discussion is for. But your comment to Damien shows that you think that somebody saying “I think the lighting is too saturated for it to be realistic” is somehow on par with “Screenshot simulator 2013″ which is obvious trolling.

This is the same as an iRacing post where I say “iceRacing Simulator 2013″, or an rFactor post where I say “Retro Gaming Graphics Simulator 2013″ or an Assetto Corsa post where I say “Blurry Photos of Monitors 2013″.

The fact that it has 26 upvotes means nothing to me. What pisses me off is not founded criticism but people like you that seem to think that trolling is cool on this forum and somehow equal to legitimate discussion.

BTW, Damien’s post clearly violates Rule #2 of this site.

What’s there to be tone deaf in reading text, when did this site include text to speech?. :)

      • Anonymous

Text can have a tone. Your country invented the English language – learn it.

      • Anonymous

Wrong I say old West Germany, go back to school :)

      • Kendra Jacobs

Not trolling Damien’s post has definite merit in my opinion.

    • Kendra Jacobs

      LOLOLOLOL so true!!!!!!!!

  • Matt Orr

Does Project CARS have lightning? I don’t see any lightning. I know they have rain racing, but what about in a thunderstorm, with you know, lightning and thunder. I can’t get immersed without lightning, I need to know if they support that feature.

041 is the best of the bunch, that is a photo of a real car, I am sure.

    • suttcliffe

Yes was added last week, still needs tweaking though

    • Anonymous

Yeah, they should totally add lightning, I would love to see a picture of a car with lightning in the background.

  • Humberto Roca

This is getting better and better each week.

  • Marco Hooghuis

Wow, the guy (or gal) who picked the screenshots has a serious rain and lightning fetish!

    • Anonymous

Most pCars screenshots seem to be kitschy if that’s the right word, or sentimental, in real racing such vivid colours, sunsets, lightnings etc. rarely appear, more of “everyday normal racing” pics would be better than these “artistic” shots IMO…

      • Anonymous

Agreed. i think pCARS has lost it’s way visually, gone too far. None feel realistic really. They all feel like i’m looking at a Need For Speed type of art like you would see in Hot pursuit or something. It’s very arcady graphically, i prefer Assetto Corsa and even rF2’s to a point visual style far more. Also, 80% of these are downsampled from 4k or 1440p and are taken using Sweet FX and others, not really a true representation of what you get, AC are unedited legit shots and what you get in game. Colours look overly vivid, you can tell the Sweet FX shots a mile off in these. pCARS is too stylistic.

      • Markus Ott

That’s because players use different HDR modes to get a good color saturation. They want to make their screens look outstanding. I like realistic looks, too, but sometimes I race with the oversaturated Halbe Filmic mode just for the fun. You can’t blame SMS that they offer different HDR modes, at least they give options to the user to set the game how they like it, not only one. And afaik there will be a tool in the final version where users can freely play around with lightning and colors. If you want it realistic, do it. If you want warm Forza Motorsports like lightning, do it. I don’t see where this is a problem. And even if people use injectors, it is a tool everyone can use and can ask for the settings if he likes some of the shots. I’ve done it myself to recreate the graphics I liked on screenshots. There are no fake screenshots with effects that you actually never see in the real game like other developers do it. At least the real edited screenshots are filtered out in a separate thread and those are not published on their front page. Everything you see can be done by anyone.

      • Anonymous

Sure yes i understand. I’m just making an observation of the shots i see here. The lighting and sky/clouds look like something from a futuristic shooter or something, like something from Deus EX/Mass Effect or RAGE or whatever, it just doesn’t fit the scene, it’s not believable. If we raced cars on Mars or something then maybe it would be realistic, but it doesn”t look like planet earth, it just feels very gamey in comparison to the more realistic lighting approach of AC and rF2.

Regarding injectors i do agree from a PC perspective. But when i said it was not really a fair representation of what the game is. I mean for future wiiU and console owners, they are looking at them and expecting these visuals, but most of these are edited with injectors and/or downsampled which is not available on the the consoles.

Car shaders and models though are amazing in pCARS. Forza 5 modeling and shading looks alot better but PC wise pCARS is right up there.

      • Markus Ott

Well, I wouldn’t argue about some of the effects we see look artifical, but at least SMS shows the commitment and manpower to bring state of the art graphics and sim racing together. In the end it’s what the the user makes out of what SMS provides them to play around with, you just can’t say SMS lost its way. Nothing we see here is SMS made, what we see are user intented tries to make something in “style” with the lightning and all that stuff. At least I hope SMS will have a workover of the lightning at the end of the project to fit it all together, because sometimes it indeed looks artificially put together. This and the replay fidelity.

Sure yes good points. Again i am only passing judgement on what i see here. From these shots, i much prefer the graphical style and approach of AC and rF2. This looks very gamey, very NFS or PGR in these screens

      • Kendra Jacobs

Agree with everything you’ve said about pcars graphics being so gamey nfs style michael bay hollywood totally fake looking and about rf2 and ac being way more realistic looking to what you actually see. Like you were reading my mind. Pcars just wants the money. And i bet when iracing and live for speed updates their graphics that this junk pcars video game 12 year old style graphics is not the direction they will take either.

      • Anonymous

They are planning something like: realistic look / more saturated(injector style edited for each weather/time) look etc bla bla for the graphic options as far as i remember. So while what you say has merit, it is a realistic representation of the game. Even for consoles probably.

      • Big Ron

Agree, looks a bit like Hollywood to a certain point, especially sunrise/ sunset and thunderstorm. But the graphics-artists are aware how far they can go, they just have no time to optimize the several conditions at this time. A lot of this stuff is just included and left alone for now. Especially tunderstorm and lightnings look weird, but that´s to be tuned at a later stage, I guess.

Also some of the members use really weird injector- settings and filter.

      • Anonymous

Yes it’s like a Michael Bay type look in a way, striking but not realistic. For me as said it when i look at these i think Need For Speed and not something that is simulating the real world graphically.

      • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

You can make it look like any of those games in overall colour.

      • punkfest2000

Lol @ RF2 graphics. “more like I see when I look out of my window”?? Does it look like 1998 graphics where you live?

      • Andrew McP

I’m not going to defend all of rF2’s graphics, but it has a worse reputation than it deserves.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwoRrDTh-sg

      • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

Totally agree. People don’t seem to see its graphical potential. I’ll say this again, go and play Lake and whatever mod suits you for Rf and tell me that doesn’t look half bad on a game thats N’ years old and still play like the best out there. But they’ll still come back and moan about Rf2s graphics totally missing the point. Like they’re the most important thing in a sim.

      • Anonymous

No it doesn’t look 1998 where i live, but it also doesn’t look like Mars or a Michael Bay scene either. I look out of my window now and yes the sky and lighting looks much more like rF2 than it does pCARS in these screens, sorry but it does. I think people are fooled by the poor car models and shading in rF2, but behind the wheel, the lighting in rF2 feels more convincing to me, more and more every build.

      • punkfest2000

Ugly women need love too huh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

      Its a new scene.

  • myvracelog

come on stop trying to trick us these are real cars.

  • The_Flurk

Some of these shots took me about half an hour to render in 3ds max about 8 years ago (to get the same result). It’s stunning how far we’ve come graphical wise…

  • Hurdy Hurdy

    Hmmmmmm.

BAC Mono all covered in water droplets from the rain/spray, yet the drivers helmet is bone dry.

    Getting there, lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

Theres now something like 17 scenes and 24 hour skies on all of them (thats gradiatated skies – not just 24 “colours” 1 per hour). Each colour cycle is different depending on the scene They have gone above and beyond what was possible with skies in most games. They’ve just chosen the most colourful ones. Agree about the injector and sharpness shots although if you had the right PC you could see this all running downsampled at 60fps. Would take a bloody powerful PC though.

If it drives as nice as it looks, I’m game.
