Project CARS – Funding Goal Reached!

Slightly Mad Studios’s Project CARS title is now fully funded thanks to their World of Mass Development portal.

Launched in October 2011, the idea behind World of Mass Development was to allow the studio to independently develop a racing simulation by getting the community involved. Back then, some sim racers believed the project to be too ambitious but the strength of the community has proven that Slightly Mad Studios’ vision of independently funding and developing a racing title can become reality.

13 months after the initial launch, the funding goal has been reached as the full 3.75 million Euros required to develop the title have been pitched in. In return, ten thousands of members get to try regular development builds, follow the development of the title in the WMD forums and earn a share of the title’s profits once it hits the shelves in 2013.

Due to the funding being completed, purchasing and upgrading of tool packs is no longer possible, closing the WMD forums to new members. All members that are on board now will continue to receive all their benefits, everybody else will have to wait until late 2013 to give the finished title a try.

Until then, there will surely be no shortage of preview material as the busy WMD community will continue to create screenshots and videos of all upcoming new features & cars for everyone to enjoy.

This is awesome news. I’m glad to see a great team successfully breaking out of a mindless publisher’s control to a well-balanced and beautiful racing sim. Although they’ve changed quite a lot recently, I haven’t launched the game in months. Being too caught up in Diablo, I end up with no energy left to focus on a race.

Can’t wait for the final build, but till then, I’m sure WMD will never cease to impress.

This is a triumph for this innovative business model.

  • Jason Ganz

I’m happy to have been part of the buildup to this. This game has evolved so much and so many cars, tracks, etc., have been added, that when it does come out, I can honestly say the sim-game environment will be turned squarely on its head. The environments, the vibrations of parts, the way cars handle, the accessibility and transparency between SMS and its members, everything is just uncharted territory for race simulations. Kudos to all involved, in making the videos and screenshots, the financial patrons, getting track licenses, car companies on board, etc., It’s been a great year and hopefully the next year will make this game – as BMW’s slogan says – the ULTIMATE driving machine.

Gratz, now use it to build a proper Sim.
    Cya in another year PCARS.

    • Big Ron

You always need to give your ambiguous remarks, don´t you?

      • sargentjack86

        What’s ambiguous about it???
Congratulations on reaching the funding goal. Now use that money to develope an actual racing sim not this arcade rubbish we have been suffering.
Hopefully in a year they will be able to reach an acceptable level of simulation. If not forget it.
Sounds reasonable to me. Keep your jaded remarks to yourself!!! :-)

      • Big Ron

If you know his comments in the past being often ambiguous, I can clearly read the same here (at all in combination with the last sentence)

      • sargentjack86

Exactly. He is taking the mick out of how bad PCARS has been up to this point and he has every right to as it has been absolutely awful. Laughable rubbish.
So why the need to point it out if it’s so obvious? You are just provoking a reaction from people who hate PCARS and SMS.
You’d be better off leaving the cynical and ironic comments to the people who do them best and most often. ;-)

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

You being in a pCARS thread when you hate it is just provoking a reaction from people who like pCARS and SMS.
Sell your account and go comment on things you DO like.

      • sargentjack86

No me being in a PCARS thread when I hate it is just an attempt by me to recoup my loss of 25 EURO investment by selling it to somone so I don’t feel like I was conned into buying half of Ian Bell’s lunch one day last December.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

A rather cynical point of view but to be expected considering pCARS hasn’t turned out as you expected with still another year of development yet to go. You dont finish the physics overnight in game development.

Well maybe you`ll be lucky and someone who will appreciate where pCARS is at the moment will buy your lunch.

      • Peter Bone

        What a tool.

      • sargentjack86

        It was a joke.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

You’re only backing Marcus up because you hate pCARS yourself. Calling it arcade is a nonsense. It’s a cheap cop out remark that just doesn’t wash any more.

Unless the word arcade has been redefined just for the sim-racing community, which it hasn’t, you couldn’t be more wrong.
How accurate or how much of a sim you feel pCARS to be is another debate, but it is a sim by any definition of the word.

      • sargentjack86

No calling it arcade is an accurate description of what it has been up until this point. It certainly has not been simulating anything resembling reality so I guess arcade maybe the word that is most appropriate for whatever it has been trying to achieve.
Notice I mentioned arcade in the past tense. By that I mean up until the introduction of the new tyre model. I cannot pass any comment on the new tyre model because I have not tried it and nor do I intend to.
I was mearly stating the fact that all previous builds up to this new tyre model have been total arcade rubbish. That is not nonsense or a cheap remark. It is fact.

      • Big Ron

Your point is hardly a fact. Having a tyre model (even the old BTM) with lots of parameters to set a characteristic is a simulation whatever you might think about it. How good it is is of course another point.

      • sargentjack86

Yes it’s a simulation…………..a simulation of a pretend arcade reality. Thus it was an arcade game. Pretty simple really. Would you rather I said…………”It is a simulation, but unfortunately not one that resembles reality as we know it. One might even say it is arcadey”.
There you should be able to process that info without getting jaded.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kris.baxter2 Kris Baxter

clearly then your understanding of the definition of the word “simulation” needs attention. I believe even before the new tyre model pcars simulated driving, it didn’t simulate pulling up your panties or hiding in your cupboard. The grip levels were not NFS levels, you could spin the car, contact would damage the car, how does that not simulate driving? Its just the new tyre model is more realistic.

      • sargentjack86

Yes it simulated driving. But not in reality. It was some made up reality where real world physics did not apply. I think it is you who need to get a dictionary out budski. My understanding of the word complies with the correct definition. Yours does not…….maybe give it a check next time eh?
Here you go…….from the Oxford Dictionary.

        “Definition of simulator

        noun

a machine designed to provide a realistic imitation of the controls and operation of a vehicle, aircraft, or other complex system, used for training purposes: a driving simulator”
The key word you are looking for is realistic. The previous builds of PCARS were lacking in this regard thus they could not be considered a simulation by any one of sound mind.
        Glad I could help.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kris.baxter2 Kris Baxter

no, you are referring to a simulator machine, which does not apply here, we are talking about a race simulator confined to our PCs. I have a wheel, a 6 speed gearbox, a 3 pedal pedalbox, and the physics, whilst not perfect, were simulating driving. No racing “games” simulate reality as you put it, is iRacing perfect? course, not, they overhauled their tyre model because it was not good, was rFactor? well some deemed it to be, but we know it is not perfect either, all sims only attempt to simulate driving. Arcade adds an element of farse, i.e. being able to hit a barrier without damage, to use machine guns and lightning bolt guns to take out the opposition, or jump 100ft without damaging your car.
Just because the physics and tyre model were unpolished, it is and was still more than an arcade racer, that is abundantly clear to anyone who drives it, arcade games are easy, this is not. Can you bang out a completely nuts time on California coast without damaging your car, spinning out or losing control over bumps? If it had CMR physics you could.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

What you consider fact is merely your own opinion. This is where you’re going wrong.

      • sargentjack86

When the facts are readily avilable it is easy to form an opinion.

      • Anonymous

Just for laughs: Which is the latest build you tried?

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

You calling it arcade is opinion, nothing more. If it was based on facts then everyone would see it the same way and that’s not the case.

      • Anonymous

I’m not sure I would call it arcade? Its certainly not hardcore sim but it has elements of sim in there! I hope they achieve what they set out too and create a good playable title! There’s definitely room for a game like this in the pc market, Xbox and ps3 have fora and gt5!

      • Eric Zehnder

I don’t understand why the incredibly active moderators don’t just delete stuff like this outright. What purpose does it serve allowing people to troll on your site?

      • Anonymous

We can’t win either way. If we delete it, his next comment will be “zOMG!!!!11 SMS is censoring this site!!!!!”

      • punkfest2000

Let them spew, it matters not one iota. This sim is superb already it’s hard to fathom how impressive it will be once completed. It will be a critical and financial success…any fool should be able to see this.

      • sargentjack86

Not worried man. Delete them if you think it will put the game in a better light. I wish SMS and PCARS the greatest success and I hope they manage to make the most detailed and realistic sim available. :-)

      • http://twitter.com/Michael_42 Michael

Well, you picked a mod who, if left alone for half an hour would start to argue with himself.

You can at least win in the sense that if he showed some self-control and restraint the others would have one less halfwit to argue with – in many cases he’s the only halfwit they are arguing with, hence there’d be a immediate reduction in the length and quantity of these, err threads from,, well let’s call them “master debators”

See? You hired a master debater (any resemblance to any other word is entirely coincidental) rather than a moderator.

I mean, this guy makes Redi look almost sane by comparison.

      • pez2k .

I would say that SMS should be judged by the game they’re giving us right now, and it’s nothing like either Shift game. Judging pCARS with expectations set by Shift is just as inaccurate as judging Shift with expectations set by GTR2.

  • Anonymous

HAHAHA! I remember this thread Rob where you had said the same thing and helped SMS make some USD 300.000,00 (three hundred thousand) on fools who went after you. I hope SMS handed at least 10% because you made them a hell lot of a money! They hired you which was great but not as good a deal as if they handed you your deserved share in that rumor you came up with.

    http://www.virtualr.net/project-cars-sign-ups-likely-to-be-closed-soon

    • http://twitter.com/Dillyracer Dylan H.

Funding was going very slow at that stage of the project which meant that SMS was looking for a publisher to invest the rest in the project.

You can still argue that it was all a big setup to get more money, which wouldn’t make sense anyway, but it wasn’t Rob that came up with that “rumour”. It wasn’t even a rumour. The deal didn’t go through because the publisher wanted to influence the game.

    • Anonymous

How is reporting on the funding being closed currently going to make SMS any more money?

I know you’re a troll, but at least try and make a little bit of sense.

stupid me forgot to sign up :(

    • Anonymous

      ouch :(

  • Pabig

This is retarded and a bad decision, they could have easily gotten more funding if they kept the sign ups open. Also I wanted to sign up in 2 weeks and I get screwed out of my game, I call this fraud! Same rights for all so everybody should have the possibility to sign up!

    • Peter Bone

Youve had 13 MONTHS to sign up, and this has been on the cards from day one.

As for it being Fraud – In criminal law, a fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual.(Wiki)

      Get real son.

    • pez2k .

They don’t need more funding, the entire predicted budget is now covered. Any more funding would just increase the number of sales required to break even and dilute any profit made. As Peter below says, you’ve had a lot of time to sign up, sorry if you’ve missed the boat but you’ll still be able to buy the retail release next year.

      • Pabig

Yeah but I want to play it now not in 1 year. I expect a reply by the CEO of SMS on why I cannot sign up anymore.

      • Anonymous

Well, you`re too late, nothing more to say.

The funding goal was known beforehand, nothing changed with that since the launch. It simply makes no sense for SMS to accept more money than needed to fund the development.

You had 13 months (!) to join, I posted several warnings in the pCARS stories during the past few weeks that funding was coming to a close very fast…

Waiting until the last second is a gamble and it seems like you just lost that one, sorry.

      • Pabig

But wouldn’t it make more sense if they say “once we reach the funding goal we will keep the sign ups open for 2 weeks so everyone has a last chance.” That would not only give everybody a warning on how much time is left but also would have the advantige of a little bit more funding. I planned on racing with my mates next week and now I will be the odd man out and can only stare at shitty old games.

      • Anonymous

What sense would it make to set a goal in the first place then? The way things are going now, 2 more weeks would probably bring in more than an additional 300k, money that is simply not needed right now.

There’s a reason for a fixed funding goal, the whole budget, profits etc. are calculated based on it.

And as far as fair chances and warnings go, this isn’t coming out of the blue. I reported several times on the estimated remaining time, you would have had weeks to comfortably join but for some reason you waited until the last second…I’m sorry.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

That would make no difference. After those 2 weeks, there would still be people saying they missed out at the last moment.
You have to ask yourself why it took you so long to decide to sign up and why leave it to the last moment ?

      • http://www.facebook.com/kris.baxter2 Kris Baxter

oh ok so a 2 week warning and another £200,000 in funding, thanks pal, you just cost me my profit share. There has been plenty of warnings, including one this week I believe saying the target was nigh, why not sign up then? you could have been last lucky person to sign up? If you procrastinate, you lose, a life lesson still to be learned it seems.

      • Anonymous

If you wanted a 2 week warning, you should have been paying attention 2 weeks ago:

“Interested sim racers are advised to not wait much longer if they`re
planing to join WMD. There has recently been a big surge in community funding as almost 400.000 Euro have been pitched in during the past month alone, causing the project funding goal to close in quickly. Once the goal is reached, no more members will be accepted and those left out won’t be getting to try the title until it hits the shelves in 2013.”
        http://www.virtualr.net/project-cars-multiplayer-for-team-members

    • Skytrill

You had the Right to sign in, and Montoya has announced that the deadline was near since many days now. And if you want the game I’m sure by reading the love and hate in here that someone will sell you his license.

  • sargentjack86

Anyone who wants to buy my membership is welcome to it if that is actually possible to switch some how. I take Paypal 25EURO. :-)

    • Alejandro Gorgal

Are you sure this is a good idea? Your pCARS account should be tied to your Paypal/Credit card account, if you sell it to someone else that person may have access to that information.

I wouldn’t take that risk if I were you, you’ll probably get your invesment back (and then some) once the game is released anyway.

      • sargentjack86

No probably not a good idea. But I don’t see how I will get any money back on release???? That was never part of the deal was it??

      • Anonymous

Dude, seriously. How do you expect us to take anything you say even remotely serious if you can’t even get the basic facts straight?

You didn’t even bother to understand what the tool pack you bought entitles you to?

      • sargentjack86

My inital understanding was that I would invest 25EURO and there would be the potential to make a profit on that investment on release. Maybe a 50% return??

Later on in the development I thought this idea was scrapped and the team members would get a copy of the game for a reduced price or something??

Sorry if my confusion has made you aghast but maybe you would be decent enough to clear up the errors in my knowledge base?

      • pez2k .

A Team Member receives a 25 euro discount on the price of the finished game, plus a share of any profits made. Current (unofficial) estimates are that the game can break even at around 270,000 sales, at which point your whole 25 euros will be refunded. Any more sales than that come back to you as profit. If the game goes on to sell a million copies, you could end up recieving 100 euros or more.

      • sargentjack86

        Thanks for the reply.

I do not see that info on the WMD portal anywhere easy to find so I don’t see how Montoya expected me to know all that??

To be honest none of this was very clear at all. If I had been aware of this I would’ve invested more money to get a bigger return but I’m not worried.

I was under the impression that the % profit was not happening for whatever reason and that we would get a discounted game and nothing more. I remember being told that I was not infact an investor but I had merely made a donation for access to the builds and that I would be rewarded with a copy of the game at reduced price.
Whatever. There was clearly some misunderstanding…….somewhere between a complete lack of interest on my part and bad communication on thiers.
Now I am aware that I am a valuable investor I will again wish all the best to SMS and PCARS and I hope to be reaping the rewards of my hard toil testing the game. ;-) :-)

      • sargentjack86

From your lack of response I’ll assume you couldn’t find this info on the WMD site yourself?
        It ain’t on there.

      • Anonymous

        It should be clear…….but I accept it perhaps isn’t. (I haven’t looked)

It really shouldn’t be subject to change either as those are surely the terms under which one made the offer (to invest, pre-order, whatever).

Well, no – it’s actually impossible for there to have been enough time for everyone to sign-up when the sign-up period was time-limited by a maximum amount of sign-ups.

The only way there could be ‘enough time’ was if they were under-subscribed……in which case the time-limit wouldn’t matter and the cut-off wouldn’t have happened. lol

If more developers (I’m not saying ALL) did this, the devs wouldn’t have to expand their spending and 1: the community gets involved, 2: prices stay down, 3: more input is added into the game and 4: there is less of a chance devs will go out of business. I can’t wait until the final release of the game. All I’ve seen looks more than outstanding!
