Project CARS – Build 439 Available

Slighlty Mad Studios has released an extra Team Member build of their WMD-powered Project CARS title.

Following the Easter Build released last Thursday, this build is available to Team Members out of the ordinary as an important new fix for flickering issues when using SLI & Crossfire has been added.

Alongside other fixes and changes listed below, the new build also properly adds the historical version of Spa Francorchamps that was hidden in the Easter build. The iconic track can now be regularly selected in the track selection screen like all other tracks.

Build 439 (2/4/13, Team Member+)
API:
* All chat message api functions (first pass)
Render:
* Fix for static environment face update rate – the recent envmap refactor had a missed setting making the rendering of the static envmaps 6x slower
GUI:
* Weather config tweaks for localisation
Physics:
* Bump steer fix on the struts for Evo FQ400, Boss 302R, Focus RS, Pirault Mega. Camber exploit fix applied to those and the Racers
Environment:
* Rainy 2 wtc added. Please remember to delete the contents of \Documents\Lighting Edits\CARS if you used my work around for the missing file in build 438
Tracks:
* Lakeville: Update for GP, further updates on inner and outer terrain and materials adjustments on scene, swapped 3D sprite trees to 3D ones
* Solitude Rennstrecke: New basic AIW for the recent changed geometry. Also fixes AI slowdown in first corner
* Heusden: Fixed shadow and terrain issues. Missing assets added, tarmac strips darkened, red boxed added
Vehicles:
* BMW M1: Adjustments to chassis. Set motion ratios at a more realistic .75 front and .75 rear , Adjusted pushrod angles to match this to get shock speeds closer to real. Adjusted all spring rates and damper rates to work with these new ratio’s. Steering lock upped from 20 to 30 degrees and steer ration tweaked. upped FFB tire force fraction. Some chassis balance work to suit. No tire changes
* BMW M3 GT: Adjusted some texture sizes, minor spec map fixes
* BMW M3 GT: Fixed taillight illumination
* BMW M3 GT2: Texture size adjustments
* BMW M3 GT4: Fixed gauges lighting
* Caterham Classic: locked gear ratios at factory settings and added a new final drive ratio
* Ford Focus RS: New tail lights
* Lotus 98T: Changes to the pushrod postioning and steering ratio for new tire. slight adjustment for bump steer fix
* Lotus 78: New physcis to go with new tire. Motion ratios changed to a more reaistic .625 front and .75 rear. Spring and damper rates adjusted accordingly. Moved COP slightly forward to match comments about real car
* Lotus 78 and 98T: New tires that are more period correct. Removes the FA tire
* Ariel Atom 300: Switched compound to track_jadegreen. Effectively lower grip than previous
* Ariel Atom 300: idle throttle adjustment
* Mitsubishi Lancer Evo: All interior/exterior gaps fixed. Added quick cockpit AO. Fixed cockpit lighting
* Cockpit exposure adjustment for most of the newer cars

Build 439 is available via the Project CARS launcher that is available on the WMD Downloads Page

The build also brings plenty of physics changes as the physics department has been busy with the help of race car drivers Nic Hamilton & Ben Collins as well as the whole WMD community:

  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ 400: Fixed front bump steer issue. Found a hack I can use to get the differentials working a bit closer to reality. Still not great, and done at the expense of left/right action, but at least the front and rear axles are more realistically splitting torque now. Applied camber exploit fix. Set tire to street_jadegreen; from the Cat Classic. I like this tire a lot for a normal summer tire level of performance. Much better drive now.
  • Ford Focus RS: Fixed front bump steer. Applied camber exploit fix. Set tire to street_jadegreen.
  • Pirault Mega RS: Fixed front bump steer. (Sensing a theme today? I made a bad mistake setting up the struts in all these cars.) Applied camber exploit fix. Set tire to street_jadegreen.
  • Ford Mustang Boss 302R: Fixed front bump steer. Applied camber exploit fix. Redesigned rear end to be more like the real car and removed the placeholder NASCAR suspension.
  • Racer L4 and V8: Stuck in brakes from the SP300R until a deeper review can be done. Applied camber exploit fix. Left old tire, with the exploit still enabled, on the B compound for back to back testing.
  • BMW M1Procar – Adjustments to chassis.

Project CARS is coming to the PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii U in 2014. More info can be found on the WMD website.

To go along with the new build, a massive gallery of Project CARS Community Gallery has been released, showing off in-game screenshots created by the WMD members.

I JUST WANT TO TRY THIS GAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Can anyone let me try it ?? please?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Markus-Ott/100000878526131 Markus Ott

      You don’t need to.

Just read the very important opinions of all armchair enthusiasts who compare sims to each other to tell what is real and what not. Their knowledge is based on youtube videos and the hardest sim of course is the most realistic.

      • carson

And you dont need to be a professional racing driver to know how and what forces act on car also ….armchair expert. By that you can judge cars handling in sim/game, whether is reliably or not (at least on road tires). At this state pcars is not. Do i have to remind you that one professional driver was kicked out of pcars project for his unfavorable opinions about pcars’s physics?

      • Guilherme Cramer

        Who?

      • carson

        Ben Collins

      • Anonymous

That’s odd, he’s still active on the forum leaving feedback

      • carson

I’ve heard about that last year so maybe he is back

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Some say, he`s been offered a job at Kunos Simulazioni…. and he’s trying to have himself greenlit by Steam. All we know is, that’s a load of nonsense !

      • Anonymous

People love to spread ridiculous rumors about this title have you not learned this yet? We don’t know what goes on in Ben’s life or his schedule I assume he got pretty busy with something else and gives input when his time permits. Also he may only be asked to give input periodically when the devs feel it’s needed

      • Alejandro Gorgal

Ben Collins took a small break from being a physics consultant to work as a stunt driver on Skyfall (the Bond Movie), as soon as that was done he came back to SMS and is posting feedback very often.
So yeah, one could say you are full of poo..

      • Big Ron

And why do you declare that he was kicked? He just did some stunts for a James Bond-film and was back right after.

      • Anonymous

The Stig was kicked out of pCARS?

      • http://www.facebook.com/wesley.modderkolk Wesley Modderkolk

        He didnt give any feedback

      • Anonymous

This is 100% false. He has given a lot of feedback though he did take a break to film Skyfall.

      • http://www.facebook.com/wesley.modderkolk Wesley Modderkolk

I was talking about the stig, like mentioned in the post from LukasArnaz

      • Anonymous

        Ben Collins AKA The Stig!

      • http://www.facebook.com/wesley.modderkolk Wesley Modderkolk

Yeah that was the joke, where the Stig never says anything(and thus cannot give feedback) the real Ben Collins actually talks(or writes, whatever suits him best)

      • Anonymous

Stop spreading lies! Ben was never “kicked off” in any shape or form, he’s still active, providing regular feedback.

      • Anonymous

Damn Carson you really need to get your facts right! He’s still there you fool.

      • Anonymous

        Hmmmm

      • http://www.facebook.com/steve.shears.37 Steve Shears

So where did you hear that Carson?

      • http://twitter.com/sostanzaP sostanzaP

        Carson, how funny are you?
Go and hide yourself under a rock, please.

Ben Collins never left the project and he’s providing his feedback and expert advice, just like Nicolas Hamilton. And they aren’t the only two guys with real life racing experience that work for the project and help with their feedbacks. In fact even some of the testers and some of the developers that work on the cars have racing experience.

      • pez2k .

Indeed, I know of at least two pCARS players who have raced in international real-world series in the last fortnight, one of them being Nic. Won’t name the other though, he’s just a fan rather than a formal consultant so I respect his privacy. There’s also quite a few others who have raced in national events and give insightful comments, I’m pretty sure there’s even a Formula Renault driver playing.
Ben and Nic don’t just blindly praise the game either of course, their job is to nitpick until everything is perfect.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

I wanna know about the forces acting on my armchair. Btw, I am not an armchair expert. I know pretty much nothing about armchairs other then they are comfortable.

      • Anonymous

No people don’t get banned for constructive criticism. They get banned for behaviors. Mainly Pushing the envelope in efforts to disrupt the community. As far as I know everybody whom was banned had proper warning to cease and desists of acting on these behaviors. So basically they banished themselves.

      • http://www.facebook.com/juha.mikkola.98 Juha Mikkola

Well there has been a time when things happened and no one can say that it was because of anything else than not praising the game.
Bell has had some serious issues with accepting feedback in the past.

      • Anonymous

Still I have seen him express what types of feedback are acceptable and why Just posting things like This Game Sucks is not tolerated he made himself perfectly clear about this. He has not had any problem with things like I feel X is wrong because of Y reasons and Z may fix this IMO :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/juha.mikkola.98 Juha Mikkola

In this case the feedback was delivered in form of a video and an explanation how the behavior was created and pointed that the problem is not caused by the camera angles or anything else than the flaw in the tiremodel that the devs didn’t want to admit.

But I hope things have changed since then and today the devs accept feedback without taking it as a personal insult.. :)

Best looking racing game so far…

  • Ioannis

Holly reflections Batman! I wish it was more optimised for older rigs, i get major shutter with my ATI 4470 everything on low. whilst rFactor 2 DX9 works pretty well.

    • http://profiles.google.com/malsakalsa Joona Besada

It’s better if you wish for better economic times and money for a new graphics card and computer :P

      • Ioannis

Cosidering that my country is on the verge of bunkruptcy for the last 2 years (Guess!) i feel privileged to worry about pcars video performance. */joke*

    • Anonymous

Being optimized for older rigs translates to using less graphics-intensive operations or features. There are types of graphics “production” that is easy for a modern DX11 card and is completely not supported on older DX9 cards.

rFactor 2 works well because they have a very basic graphics engine. DX11 and the cards that support it are modern enough to push all the great graphics technologies that make Assetto Corsa and Project CARS look so much better than iRacing or rFactor.

  • Juhan Voolaid

We can play real “real or game” game with these screenshots.

7th picture down, is that seriously in-game? If so, crazy.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRoggan Roger

I agree, its the most “realistic” one of this amazing set. The Lotus 49 at Eau Rouge(?) is very nice as well!

Just the tarmac textures that gives it away a bit, but reflections and textures on the BMW looks “real”!! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/stuart.fields.9 Stuart Fields

I really need help with this title now. I put up a decent amount of cash for my membership to the whole WMD idea simply because of its uniqueness and what I thought it could do for the sim racing scene. Try and try as I might with every build of project cars I still feel no more connected when driving. Is it just me or are the physics and feel of the cars either going backwards or not moving at all? I don’t set the cars up or know how to tweak a lot of the settings within the game so I am aware that is a flaw on my behalf but I don’t think it is unrealistic for me to expect a higher level of connection when driving. I read a comment recently about the cars feeling as though there is a second driver than adds small levels of correction when you are driving sometimes and that is the best way I can describe what I experience. A sliding car with very little FFB or response from my buttkicker and handling that feels like it is not entirely me driving.

I really want to love this title. The visuals are amazing and have been for so long that they are no longer a factor in my appreciation for the game, its purely the driving experience I am interested in now and I would love to know how I can get more from project cars. I don’t dislike the title at all but when I can say with confidence that I get more road feel and wheel response from driving a 6 year old rfactor mod than I do with this something is a bit odd.

Its hard to post about this game without people jumping all over you saying you are just an iracing fanboy or such like and wont give pcars its due because its pre alpha but I really give this game its time, hence me wondering if I am missing something important. We must be running out of time for the pre alpha excuse now surely.

    • carson

Its not just you ;) Im testing every weekly build with hope for some noticable changes in handling (not just read about corrected values of that and that and other parts but to feel any diferences). I’m aware that its just alpha but im not sure in which direction pcars is going. Im also as you feel no conection between me-car-road. Its perception matter that is dificult to explain but any good example would do job. I love driving in asseto corsa and rf2 (most nissan 370z) esspecially for ffb, whole physic and most important, that feeling im driving car which physically drive on surface and have proper mass which unfortunately i cant say about pcars at this moment. Yes, all of you can shoot at me now ;) and sorry for spreading rumors about ben collins, ive just wrote what ive heard few months ago

      • carson

Its just waste of time, you wont find there any interesting facts for you ;) no turned on abs, tc etc. but hey, satisfy your curiosity. nick is carsonpoland

      • http://twitter.com/sostanzaP sostanzaP

No mate, it’s not a waste of time and that’s not for looking if you use aids or not, but to see if you have and play the game, because too many people talk bad of the project without having the game. And to see if and how you help improving the game with your feedbacks.
And now I can see that you have the game, you play it, but you have only 20 total posts from october 2011 and not a single one about handling. Not a single one in the threads were the devs ask for the feedback about the car’s behaviour and the tyres we are testing. Not a single one in the reference threads. You simply don’t partecipate at the project and the fact that you said that thing about Ben it’s the proof of it.

      • carson

Because i dont se point of setting up each car when main physic isnt tuned up properly (maybe just in my opinion). I dont feel any mass, braking doesnt feel good either. At the top of that i dont feel that car drive on road but above it. So how i supose to give them tips for tuning cars when whole physics feels wrong to me, and not just to me.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Markus-Ott/100000878526131 Markus Ott

That’s great. So all you say is you don’t want to test the game, give feedback and you are lazy. But you have enough balls to go on community forums to tell random people how bad pCARS works for you while SMS doesn’t get to know your problems. Thumbs up for unproductiveness and just a big mouth. I hope you understand your behaviour shows typical console kid sentiments. Don’t put work into anything, you just want to be easily entertained though you know this game is pre alpha and needs testing and the production process of a game doesn’t follow normal routes.

      • Maciej Długosz

It’s perfect combination: You pay big guys for producing their game. Thank You very much. It’s the duty of developpers for God’s sake to emulate reality. Developpers could drive REAL-WORLD cars … but it would cost them … money. Cheapskates.

      • Vivian Stans

Hey! I’m not the only one!!, every week I’m trying Pcars but still no me-car-road feeling (It’s a Beauty, no doubt), even with the Fanatec CSW. after 1/2 Hour I’m switching to Stockcar 2012, Formule 3, Mini Challenge and Formula trucks. thats for me now THE SIM.

” and sorry for spreading rumors about ben collins, ive just wrote what ive heard few months ago”

Do you mind telling us exactly where you heard this poisonous rumour?

      • xdashy

Early on I had issues with the cars feeling unresponsive and understeer-y but that seems to have mostly been corrected. The main thing I notice now are typical twitchy sim issues at the tire limits and that the throttle response seems off (second one is supposedly being corrected).

It would be nice to see a more detailed description about the road connection feel being wrong because it keeps coming up but I haven’t really noticed it. I would suspect it’s more of a camera issue except that iRacing would be worse since the cam is static and it doesn’t get those kind of complaints so it obviously has something to do with the physics or control feedback.

      • Anonymous

Is it a FPS problem and you are at the lower end of system requirements? I average 80-140 FPS and to me most of the cars are real good and the newer cars that have been added are being worked on quite diligently as well as the earlier added cars are still getting polishes here and there. I do have some of my personal favorites and then some I think that are just okay. Also some adjustment to driving one car to another in game is common because they have their own characteristics. So as such we would prefer to hear what cars you think are pretty good and ones you feel that are not as good. I understand if things can be hard to explain but I think you did a pretty good job for us to get the general idea.

    • http://twitter.com/sostanzaP sostanzaP

Stuart, these are questions you have to talk in the WMD forum. You have problems in game or with the game? You have to ask there. And I can’t find a single post of you in the forum. Not a single one. :(

By the way, from the leaderboard I see that you play the game with ABS and TC on, try to turn TC off first of all, maybe your invisible friend will disappear.

    • pez2k .

You definitely need to try learning about FFBTweakers and car setup on the WMD forum, and have a fiddle with them. Nothing is optimised, so it’s very possible that you’ll find, for example, an FFB setup for your wheel that works better than default – if others are having the same issue then that setup would be likely to become the new default eventually.
As for the Buttkicker, the sound isn’t really set up well for them at the minute as far as I know, I’m pretty sure it is planned to be optimised, though current work is focused on the API for motion rigs, dashboards and telemetry first.
Hopefully you can get everything sorted, finding a fix for yourself can benefit everyone else too, and vice-versa.

I’m not gonna give you a bad time over your opinion because I know most of the cars are at different stages of development and would really like to know the cars you are referring to. This way someone may suggest you test such and such a car that is closer to being at beta level in it’s development. Me I suggest one of the Asano’s or one of the open wheel cars and see what you think as long as your getting proper FPS
