Project CARS – Build 154 Available

Slightly Mad Studios have released a new development build of their WMD-powered Project CARS title for all members with Team Member level and above.

The new build continues the title’s quick development pace as countless improvements and new features have been added to the title during the past week, including physics & FFB improvements, new versions of several cars & tracks and much more.

Furthermore, the new build adds a whole new aspect to Project CARS as custom liveries are now supported. WMD users can download painting templates for all cars and share their custom designs with the community.

Build 154 (17/2/12, Team Member +)
MUST START A NEW PROFILE WITH THIS BUILD

  • Changed Fanatec wheel default from 270 degree range to 900 degree range. This would be a problem if the player did not calibrate the wheel before driving
  • Removed memtrace calls from System Pool header expansion due to deadlock issue until they can be sorted properly
  • Fixed force effect thread crashes by implementing deferred creation/deletion of forces
  • Removed loading code for obsolete tracksglobal pakfile
  • Increased fidelity of replays for player and AI vehicles
  • Aries: Fixed memory leaks in Timings::ExportBestLiveLapData due to incorrect mempool overries
  • Ambient shadow height editing with F1 menu and reduced default to 5cm (from 25cm) to stop overlapping with bodywork
  • Camera / replay updates:
  • Physics tick and pause uses the same sync timer
  • Update camera using new metrics from physics
  • Physics sync timer uses app timer exclusively
  • Deprecated SetPhysicsClock no longer required
  • Detachable components and attached wheels are now regularly updated for AI vehicles
  • Detachable components are updated only once per simulation step.
  • Disabled automatic switch to “photomode” when pressing P – this stops the game pad right trigger from causing the camera to shoot into the ground if you hit P to pause the game
  • Increased number of op user channels from 12 to 13 to avoid crash occuring when changing window focus with certain wheels and recently added deferred effects deletion code
  • Corrected custom livery number for F68
  • Belgian Forest and Bathurst WDF edited and new textures added
  • Formula A: quick fix for offset sidepod collision mesh.
  • New livery for GUMPERTS
  • Increased far clipping dist for all cameras
  • Removed some understeer from the Kart. Increased front grip
  • New Caterham export
  • New California Raceway export

The new build is available for download on the WMD Downloads Page, new members can register here.

Hmm, this should be good for Fanatec users, as the team is working VERY actively solving all kind of FFB related code. Nice.

  • Anonymous

I can’t speak for the FFB but they sure solved my steering bug with this build (thanks guys!).  Now I can, for the first time, properly drive this thing – and its brilliant.  The ’77 car is great.

This in combo with the new 116 Fanatec drivers is pretty good so far.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

I don’t believe there are any significant changes with the 116 drivers, I’m still using 115. But the game feels brilliant in the last few builds, so yes, bravo :)

  • Joeri Blootacker

With every new build, i’m more and more impressed.
the way things are progressing is amazing, and the level of quality even more.

Is the Ban Bug fixed with this build? I’d Rather not pay if I am just going to get banned if I find something wrong with the Sim.

Well I spent the night testing rF2 build 60, but I just installed 116 and will give this build a go… So much to do :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

To be honest, I don’t understand how the issue could be with the drivers, as my wheel(s) have always worked perfectly in other games… I’m happy not to be a developer anymore, as this looks very complex…

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

Hiiyooo! Not my skin this time.

Or else what ?  I dunno if you noticed but this is Montoya’s house.
He has loyalties to SMS and has a right to protect them from lies, false rumours or such like especially if they are posted here on his own doorstep.

Besides he could hardly have responded impartially to a post like that.
    Good day to you too.

  • Anonymous

It has nothing to do with alliances, I just don’t want to see slander on here – And that’s what it is.

I wouldn’t let that happen to any other studio either, with the difference that it’s harder for me to tell who’s wrong or right in other case. Here it’s easy, I very well know that the statement above is a lie – Plain and simple.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

WOW. WOW. Formula A on Spa… WOW. Now we’re talking !!!
Ok, lots of things to test now, for the first time I really had a blast with CARS ! Can’t wait for my CSR Elite now ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcus-Caton/647940120 Marcus Caton

He would be better off not responding at all.

I only saw a threat and insult to someone speaking their mind. Did a Ban bug ever exist? if he was mistaken on this bug Montoya has no moral right to say what he said to someone who asked a question.”Is the Ban Bug fixed with this build? I’d Rather not pay if I am just going to get banned if I find something wrong with the Sim.”

  • daz

I guess it all depends on how you put your findings across to the developers.

Make it constructive and helpful and I don’t see a ban being enforced. Post comments that are just an excuse to rant, swear and hurl abuse then maybe a ban is to be expected.

I’ve no idea how you would intend to post, but like any forum, I guess WMD have their rules.

  • Anonymous

There’s no “ban bug”, it’s obviously a snarky comment.

The claim that people who find something wrong with pCARS get banned is simply not true and I was pointing that out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcus-Caton/647940120 Marcus Caton

With the response to F1racer said Montoya, as a mod i would think stopping people who curse and threaten peoples lifes in “your house” to be priority above possible ignorance by common users.

If that is your reaction, to ban someone for asking a question then I’m worried about anyone saying anything remotely negative about the Companies you favor and or slander as you call it.
I dont know where your from but if free speech isn’t possible then i suggest you accept the fact that other people have opinions of their own however different from yours they have the right to say it, shout it and post it within common moral reason.
     Good day.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

I still can’t believe my eyes when I see shots like that… SMS have raised the bar VERY high…

  • Anonymous

Making false claims doesn’t count as free speech and they don’t qualify as opinion either.

“I don’t like pCARS etc” – Opinion, perfectly fine.

“You get banned from WMD for criticism” – False statement, not cool.

Everybody’s welcome to voice their opinion here on every topic they please. But like I said, I won’t tolerate that people or companies are being slandered with obviously false statements. It adds nothing constructive to the discussion and just misleads people…

Like daz explained above, it’s all about the tone. Nobody gets banned from WMD for criticism as long as some decency is involved. But the open atmosphere doesn’t mean that people have the right to be abusive… people who get banned (and we really talk about a handful of people on a forum with 17.000 active members) are those who can’t behave and poison the atmosphere for everyone.

  • Anonymous

Quit trolling. People posting crap get banned on forums, that’s how it is. Nobody wants to put up with bulls**t.
The pCARS forums don’t tolerate disrespectful people at all.
Some banned idiots have tried to get ‘revenge’ by posting crap on other forums, and other forums don’t want to put up with their crap either.

  • Anonymous

Great shot.  I`d like to see less reflections on these cars though.  It seems a bit overdone atm.

  • Anonymous

“Montoya has no moral right to say….”  ??

erm hang on… just a minute ago you were going on about free speech!  Well you can’t have it both ways.
Montoya has every right to say what he wants to on his own website.  It is WE who are the guests here.

People who find bugs with pCARS don’t get banned unless they’ve been acting up on the WMD forum.  So I can only assume you weren’t banned for simply pointing out a bug.

Also this isn’t the place to be taking out your anger.  If you do, then don’t be surprised at Montoya’s response considering SMS are his employers.  He does not have to be neutral.  There are no written laws.  He has to look after the name of his company and, along with myself, the trolling of this site.   You are negatively affecting both.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Is it me or now that I can finally drive with my Fanatec wheel, I find CARS impossible to crash ?
The first time, it was with the Formula A on Spa, Eau Rouge and the Raidillon at full speed on first try… I could never do that neither on iRacing nor on rFactor2.
It feels more like DiRT2, very fun but absolutely not rewarding… And that’s with all aids off… It feels good, but not right.

It took me ages to learn to drive that Porsche in GTR2 tutorials, and first real take on CARS and it’s too easy ? Something not right in the physics, don’t you think ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Markus-Ott/100000878526131 Markus Ott

Because other games are more difficult to drive means pCARS has to be wrong? What kind of argument is that to ask if the physics are bad in pCARS…

How real is it to crash 10 times on (almost) full thottle before you can take eau rouge?
    Right… totally unrealistic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

Kind of agree with Markus. If you’re really stupid you can get the cars to go away from you, especially putting 1 wheel on the grass. But the tenancy is that to drive most of the cars are…well, derivable.

  • Anonymous

Formula A is the newest addition and the physics for it are very early. Don’t judge the game by that car.
Drive the Atom and tell me it’s easy, I dare you :P

  • Eric Zehnder

You probably already know this and Laurent should too: SMS is looking at other racing games as being unnecessarily difficult. The reason they’re coming at it from this angle is because of real racing drivers telling them that cars shouldn’t be spinning that easy, etc.

As far as it not being rewarding, there are a couple things:
    1. You probably have too much downforce on the car. I realized this this morning and the cars behave much more normally when you dial it back on the F1 cars. The AI can be adjusted so that it’s still a challenge no matter what your setup (at this point).
    2. Tire modeling is progressing but proper temperature fluctuations are basic if in at all and tire wear isn’t in at all. You’re essentially driving on perfect qualifying tires right now. This coupled with default setups that have tons of downforce and you see where I’m going with it.

The difficulty will come when those and other elements (weather, track temp, tire temp/wear) are fully in the game and adjusted accordingly.

Lastly, you must be a driving god if you can keep up with Hard AI at Bathurst in the ‘Leonus 67′. The lack of downforce, huge horsepower, and track undulations keep me hitting the barriers regularly. When I get a lap right it is very rewarding!

  • Eric Zehnder

Yo dawg, we heard you liked rear downforce so we put fins on your spoilers so you can spoil your fins!

    #mikahakinenjoke?

  • Eric Zehnder

I’ve only seen two people get banned from pCARS in the forum and they deserved it. Other than that, there are TONS of people who voice criticism in non constructive and frankly combative ways without being refunded and banned. The devs are extremely cool headed considering how much “dis build sux0rz!” and “No 3D support? Sux!!” comments we get each new build.

    Thank You, Montoya.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jan.c.larsen Jan Cato Larsen

Well, I was slammed in the face for making lies and flase statements last time I was here so I hope my comments fare better with the guys this time.

Build 154 was a major turnover for me. Now I can tell what the cars is doing at any given time on the track. The bungy steering rack feel is gone and the FFB is really getting somewhere. The physics are getting there and the tire feel through the wheel is much much better.

this is my opinion only that I state here, not to slander anyone that feels otherwise.

I still have the best feel with the Caterham though. I feel that is the car that is best suited for this game still. It is kinda loose and alive in real life aswell, though a bit less forgiving in real hands instead of the virtual ones… I like where this is heading.

I am sure that builds in the future will hold both good and negative, but proper feedback from the community might turn it again…. Problem with the community is that if you have 17 000 people there, it will give you atleast 16 000 different opinions :)

Right. My comment for now. Good work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

I know that SMS thinks others sims are more difficult than they should be, and I agree the way iRacing sends you to spin is ridiculous, but still…
After a good session in rFactor2, CARS really feels like an arcade game, physics wise. As I said, it’s very fun, I feel like in a better Shift, but after trying to drive an Eve F1 at Monaco on rF2, CARS doesn’t feel like driving a real car at all.
I remember on GTR Evo the DTM mods were much easier to drive than, say, a Porsche or Ferrari, but you still needed some skills to not send it in the sand if you braked too hard and locked your tires. Here the DTM is on rails, just brake harder and you can make it around the corner, you don’t loose grip if you go out the track with 2 tires in the sand, etc.

Cool down, guys, I’m not saying CARS is shit, I believe in it like you do, but for the first time I can really drive it and I thought the driving would be more challenging and interesting. I’ve never succeeded in making almost perfect laps on ANY sim on first take as I did in CARS last night. I’m far from being a driving god, or a gaming wiz, and my motion rig doesn’t work with CARS yet, so that’s even without motion cues like I have in rF2 already.

I’m sure it’ll get more refined in the future with setups and other elements as you say, Eric, but at this point, you can’t change my mind because I know what I’m feeling and there’s no reason your feeling is any more valid than mine ;)

I will follow all your suggestions though and will give it many other tries from now on, as I said, it’s very fun. Thank you for your explanations.

Edit: I noticed how I talk about hot lapping, the pure feeling of the car, while you’re talking about race situations with AI… Remove the AI, Eric, and give it a go in your favorite car, you’ll probably understand more what I felt.

I’m under the impression that SMS’ will is to make an amazing *racing* simulator more than the perfect *driving* simulation, if you see what I mean… A bit like Shift, I think Ian is very dedicated to bring the best simulation of the whole race experience… I’m ok with that too as no other dev company would make the perfect “arcade” sim like SMS can, and that would be a very nice change from all the “dry” sims (rF1, nKP, iRacing, etc)

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

I will. Try the Atom, that is, not tell you it’s easy ;)

Edit: Wasn’t the Formula A present from day 1 ? I don’t understand why everybody says it’s a new addition ? Or what was the first Formula that was in CARS if it’s not the A ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Sorry, Ross, I’m not sure I understand what you mean…

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Thanks for a nicely expressed opinion. Now I feel like testing the Caterham. :D

(and the ’77 for F1Racer, the Atom for MaddMattH, and the Leonus 67 for Eric. Lots of work ;)

I like the fact everybody has a different favorite car, though :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/jcruze88 Justin ForzaBarça Cruze

The Formula B has been in there pretty much from the beginning.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

In the last 4 or 5 builds the caterham has really been my favorite car too, it feels pretty much spot on now. The A4 DTM was never that nice to drive for me, but drop the downforce a little and suddely come’s alive, and the ffb even feels better because of it.

  • http://twitter.com/Michael_42 Michael

€45 for the full game? Did Ian Bell fall asleep and dream he was Bobby Kotick?

(oh and don’t tell me you’re also paying for the experience of giving your feedback and seeing development in action. As a programmer, let me tell you, I got £80k a year for sitting with other programmers and watching them work – I even did a bit myself when the boss was looking)

  • General Rush Hour

Dude, tell me what the hell i should study to get 80K for watching other people write code.

I´d probably give my arm for it, if needed :) (need both legs for simracing)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

Did my comment get deleted? :/

  • Ricoo

Those who buy tool-packs, will either get a discount or the full game according to their investment, and all will also get a part of the revenues from the sales.

So if the game sells well you can get more money that what you give them now, in addition to your copy of the game.

    Isn’t that interesting?

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Just tested with the Caterham, again, no way I should be able to drive that thing without crashing or spinning ever. Almost no driving skills needed compared to ANY other sim around, including GTR2.
I am really the only one who feels that way ? I’m not trolling, people, I really don’t get it…

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Come on guys, it’s always the same trap, classic trolling.
Get fooled once, shame on him, get fooled twice, shame on you.

  • http://twitter.com/mark8734 Mark

I thought the Team Member status I had already paid for several months ago got me the full game once it is released? Has it changed or did I misunderstand or not read the Terms and Conditions properly?

  • steve farrell

I would love to join Project CARS but I have seen a few posts by some people how easily they got banned and seeing Ian Bell stating that Sarcasim is not allowed on their forum I am wary of joining the team.

  • Anonymous

Initially the idea was to release pCARS as Free to play title and that would have included a base version with a certain amount of content that Team Members would have gotten for free.

Now that the members have voted for a full AAA boxed retail release, the game will be released with much more content as it would have been under the F2P model. The perk is still there though as you`ll receive a 25€ reduction on the retail price, making the final title more than 50% cheaper for you.

In the end, you`re probably even better off as more than 50% of the retail content will be more than what would have been released as part of the base pack.

Hope that answers your question. :)

  • http://twitter.com/mark8734 Mark

     Thanks for the explanation.

  • Anonymous

Like I explained above, nobody gets banned for stating their opinion or sarcasm.

As long as you don’t attack the developers or be abusive or rude you don’t have to fear anything. Plus, there’s always a warning if you overstep the line so you have nothing to worry about :)

  • steve farrell

Good to know. I am planning on getting rFactor 2 and Project cars (The new membership announced) before the end of next week. I have no clue how long it takes to transfer money from my bank to Paypal and I am going to transfer money to Paypal on thursday then get those two when the money is through to paypal.

  • Big Ron

You are spreading the same lie as the original poster. People didn´t get
banned for asking questions but being rude, unconstructive and derogatory….that´s the only reason some people were banned from the community.

    Inform yourself before talking bullshit.

  • Big Ron

Isnt hasn´t only to do with your driver, but also with the game itself. They create and update their codes with Logitech wheels first and after that going to optimise other wheels.

  • Big Ron

But maybe other sims presuppose skills you never need in real life?

  • Eric Zehnder

I go back and forth between practice laps and races. The AI, once spread out and on a good track, can be quite a good challenge and react well. However, getting to that is what causes chaos like no other. Formula “A” on Spa into Eau Rouge is a whole field pile-up more often than not.

I certainly don’t think the feel is perfect yet. I actually think that Shift 1 modified with Juls’ tyre and FFB mods was better as you could feel the steering go light over bumps, when spinning the tires, and with proper weight transfer feel.

Right now it feels like they’ve got a good base and I’m hopeful for the finished product because nobody at SMS is saying it’s done yet. If they were I’d be afraid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Steve, if you respect the people working at SMS, no reason you should be worried. Ian is a very tolerant and overall nice guy, he got attacked personally and waited until the abuse was unbearable before banning anyone.

Money should take 2 days maximum to arrive on your Paypal account, if banks work the same way in the world ;)

I’m no one to tell you what to do, but one thing I can tell you, is that both games will take you time, it’ll be difficult to play them at the same time. But if you’ve got the dough, you’ll end up getting both anyways… Have fun :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

    Yes, real driving skills ;)

I’m sure it’ll change, but for now, the driving in CARS doesn’t offer any challenge compared to rFactor2. To me, the physics are as inaccurate as DiRT2 (which was VERY fun, but no sim).

In rFactor2, when I haven’t driven for a few days, I need a few laps to get the best feeling of the car and start making good lap times again. Even after 15 laps, sometimes I go spinning because I went too far for the car, driving above the limit. I know then that *I* did a mistake, I take a mental note of the limits of the car in this specific corner and try again a bit “softer”. I’m learning the track, in other words.

In CARS, with a new vehicle and track, I just need half a track and I then make absolutely zero driving mistakes. Just turn on the green line and you CAN’T CRASH anymore. On straight lines, sometimes I can even let go the wheel for a few meters. If I’m driving in 6th, and go down to 1st without braking, the car continues to grip like nothing happened. Etc.

    As I said : WTF ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

I’m not a believer, but Amen to that ;)

  • steve farrell

Thank you for the tip. I am not an abusive person and you will probably wont see me post on the SMS forum much. Also I want to buy a Fanatec CSR and pedals before the end of next month.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

With a Fanatec set you’ll have LOTS of fun :)
For the moment, I think rFactor2 might give you more satisfaction as it’s closer to being finished, but CARS is going along nicely and if you’re interested in the concept, the sooner you subscribe, the sooner you can participate in the project and help us on the forum simply by stating your opinion on the things that matter to you. It really is a great idea !

  • http://www.facebook.com/laurent.cortier Laurent Cortier

Yes, I know that, but what I don’t get is why Fanatec would have to update their drivers just for pCARS…

  • http://twitter.com/ipitydafool Andrew

45 Euros is standard for a AAA title, that 80k a year is no barometer for common sense I see..  Who cares if you were a programmer, whoopty doo for you..

  • Ricoo

After changing some settings in the Logitech wheel profiler (enabled centring and put it to 0), I enjoyed this build. Nice to see some serious improvements and new tracks. :)

  • steve farrell

I will give my opinion on it after testing it for a few days. I did suggest a few small road cars too but looking at the project it looks like they are only interested in race cars. I know the slower road cars are’nt everybodys idea of fun but I do know some people enjoy them like I do.

I think I will get more satisfaction out of Project cars because its got more cars and tracks than rFactor 2 even though Project Cars is still a good bit off being finished.

I’ve been saying that I will buy the fanatec CSR and CSR pedals with about two months but there is always some bill that pops up that I need to pay but Its definate I will be buying the Value Pack next month if its still available.

They don´t update it only for pCARS. But sometimes wheel manufacturers re aware of interesting developments like graphics card manufacturers are and they release updated drivers to work better with the actual developing stage of a game.

For those who find pcars easy to drive… catch a track record and you’ll see it’s easy to go around the track but much more difficult to be fast. By the way physics are still very wip and many deep change will be made. So it’s improving and it will be even better ;)

If the game sells well? But the people buying it will be the people who have already “invested”

They’ll be getting their own money back – only less of it.

So no, I think the people buying the game for £5 from the bargain bin will make more money. They’ll save at least €45 :-) That’s more interesting.

As for €45 euros being standard price, that’s certainly not true in the UK for a PC game it isn’t – and definitely not for a PC racing title. And even less true for a sim.
