Brendan Elliott, Chris Larmour and Brendan Pywell have released Oran Park, bringing a second laser-scanned race track to rFactor.
Following the success of his first Eastern Creek release, lots of data about the track has been acquired, using techniques such as Aerial Laser Scanning (LiDAR), Real Time Kinematic GPS, and Robotic Total Stations.
The track has been made using a special edition of Bob’s Track Builder and includes the following features:
- A track surface that fits to within 2cm of the point cloud data.
- Terrain that follows the flow of the Aerial data.
- Walls, fencing and rails that flow with the land.
- 3d saw toothed ripple strips placed according the GPS-RTK data.
- Grass, Track Markings, Advertising signs.
- Hundreds of tyres placed using new String-Object feature to be available in v0.6.
- Over 100 rubbish bins.
Located outside of Sydney, Oran Park is Australia’s oldest operational circuit and has hosted V8 Supercars, the Superbike World Champiopnship and two rounds of Formula One. The 2.7 km track will be closed in 2009 and demolished though, making room for housing estate.

This will be epic. Gonna go test now, I mean, the more undulations in the track should be great fun :D

Woohoo, it looks superb
Downloading now and hope to get some laps in when the kids are asleep.
Thanks for your efforts guys

Beat that iRacing, a laser scanned track that doesn’t cost the price of a full game. Even better value with 100 rubbish bins
Seriously tho, this looks & I bet plays fantastico! Thumbs up guys.

Brilliant track, I tested it with the Porsche 2007 mod and it´s just great. So much detail in the road that you start to smile. This is the diffrence between a track and a track that actually feels like a real track.
Also the cars behaviour over the bumps and curbs is so great.
thank you, thank you, thank you, for this track :)

iRacing not only use the scanned pointcloud for creating the model, they also convert the pointcloud to be the physical surface of the track. There’s a vast difference.

Nice way to take it out of context mr Wheatley….. Suppose no matter where people go, you’ll be there to keep the iRacing propaganda machine going

I responded to a comment within context, much like you did. If I were responding to the initial news post, I would agree with you, but having quoted a prior comment I fail to see your point.

This track is really fun to drive and it looks great as well. Superb job! Only little problem I had was that the AI drivers kept rolling over when driving over the curbs in one corner (PCC2007 mod).

There is a Alternate AIW file, inside the Alternate AIW folder Mr. A, use that.

Oh, I completely missed that.

There is a vast difference, but it’s the difference between your understanding and reality. ;)
The point cloud we used is NOT just for visual modelling, it is used to define the whole track surface.
http://www.bobstrackbuilder.net/images/BTBL_Analyse.jpg shows the analysis performed. For the track the physics model is within 1.4cm of the point cloud mesh.

C’mon, I wasnt having a serious pop at iracing (I have know idea what a pointcloud is)
Guess iRacers cant afford a sense of humour

I assure you there was no offense. lol. ;)
Piddy, we both know that this way is the right way, but there’s some very different application methods, I am sure.

This track kicks some major ass. Raced the 2008 Formula Nippon mod here, and the C6 ‘vette. Good God, rFactor doesn’t get better than this
One thing about the marshals tho….http://www.nogripracing.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=50639

This has to be my favorite track for rFactor. It’s probably the most realistic track for it as well.

Please elaborate on the “different application methods”, Tim.
This was a pretty obvious propoganda visit from you. You had NO knowledge about how this circuit was created. Only the fact that point-cloud data was used.
Your assumptions that no one can replicate a track in a similar/same way as iRacing is BLATANT propoganda. At least back yourself up with knowledge before you pull the trigger.

I know that it’s not the most popular mod out there and is often overlooked but SpecRacer Ford is epic @ Oran.
A big thank you to all the guys involved!
If ever there was a time to donate this should be it!We should relocate these guys to Europe…or not…necesarily…how about Bathurst next?
About iRacing never tryed it,can’t afford it,I’m sure it’s great, anyway my point is that there was no claim whatsoever by the guys involved that this is better…their knowledge of the methods involved surely is beyond that…

Within 2 cm of the point cloud data is all fine and well, but what is the accuracy of the point clouds? I remember reading about this LiDAR system before and seeing the value “30cm” mentioned before.

Well I really love this track. It’s very well done and feels like a real track. And unlike tracks from iRacing this one’s free…….
One small gripe though; when cars are going over the bridge shadows are cast on the asphalt below the bridge……

secretagent – my visit are daily to VirtualR, my comment was actually based upon a comment. :) If my visit was based upon propaganda by it’s definition, so was yours and everyone else who referred to any product – by definition.
The difference in method has already been brought up in another comment.

It think that’s due to the limits of the gMotor2 engine. I don’t think it was coded with figure-8 tracks like Oran Park or Suzuka in mind.
That being said, this is an absolutely excellent track, though tighter than I imagined it would be. (then again, I’ve only played it before on TOCA Race Driver 2, and that isn’t exactly realistic. :P)

Dear Timmy, are these commits your’s or iRacing’s? Because every thing you say is a direct reflection on iRacing and I’m not sure Mr Henry, ect. would approve.
Just my opinion.

I’ll keep my comment simple.
1. Oran Park laser scanned is brilliant.
2. iRacing has amazing circuit detail especially in regards to surfaces.
3. Difference= Free addon track vs $15-25.
Think that puts just how good the Oran Parks authors have done into context!! Well done guys

Whoever Tim works for is irrelevant. He should be allowed to post here as a racing sim enthusaist like the rest of us, without being attacked. Tim did not play up iRacing, and did not put down Oran Park LiDAR. He simply said the scanning technique are different.

March 22nd, 2009 at 00:38
You need to do some more relevant reading using more recent information with emphasis on point-to-point accuracies of point cloud data.
BeX
March 22nd, 2009 at 04:05
In the case of Oran Park LiDAR the accuracy of one single point in the point cloud can be guaranteed to within 100mm of the points real world position….. that said, the relative accuracy of the points which make up the point cloud (which Piddy is referring to) is better than 10mm.
Siggs: hahaha thats great!! We did optimise those guys a fair bit, which ultimately turned them into no-eared box-headed freaks!
@ the Iracing comparisons: thanks for the compliments!
I will not say ours is better or worse than any of Iracing’s efforts, the two techniques are completely different and both have their advantages and disadvantages… just keep in mind those guys have a team of modelers and the latest and greatest equipment to work with, AND they get payed to do this!

Actually, it is relevant. He felt antagonized by a sarcastic post and needed to announce that iRacing’s way of doing things is “better”, which it may very well may be. What he didn’t do is ask how Piddy utilized the point-cloud data before claiming iRacing was superior. No harm, no foul…unless you happen to be employed by iRacing. Again it’s not a big deal, but it is relevant. You need to think before you type if you’re an employee of a competitor.
Let’s move on, it wasn’t a big deal, it just irked me.

And Im sorry too Tim. iRacing is a fantastic sim, its just the pricing structure that I have issues with.
Anyhoo, Oran park, I love it! Easily the best feeling track in rF, when I drive it with the caterhams its very comparable with iRacing.
I wonder what others favorite mods for susp/tire feel are with this or any other track that isnt billiard table smooth?
Id love to see some of the other layouts for Oran park, with marker cones
I got so lost on my first couple of laps

Did about 60 laps last night in my Porsche 997 RSR, and love this track, we need more laser scanned tracks like this.
