Niels Heusinkveld WRC Physics Test – Video

Physics guru Niels Heusinkveld continues to push the boundaries of ISI’s trusted gMotor 2 engine.

Following his take on kart racing physics, Niels has now been working on a new set of WRC rally physics.

Below is a short preview of his progress, showing a Mini Challenge car Niels has turned into a proper rally vehicle.

Looks convincing and true to life in that brief clip.

Is Niels in the rF2 dev team? If not he should be!

    hes not…wut a loss

Looks better to me than any other game I’ve seen, including RBR… but hopefully the dirt effects are really improved for rF2…

Its clearly far to slippery compared to a real rally car with it taking far to long for the slides to grip back in.

This is an issue with Gmoter 2 rather than Niels Heusinkveld , he is clearly a pro when it comes to getting decent car movement and behaviour out of Gmoter but there is a limit to what the Gmoter engine can do.

You will see that as good as GSC is the cars slide around slighty to much , it seems with Gmoter based games car designers have to chose between realistic grip but unrealistic car dynamics when they begin to slide , or realistic controllable car dynamics in a slide but unrealistic grip values when not in a slide.

  • Skytrill .

Could be an original project for Reiza Studio as there aren’t any pure rally simulations these days.. just a thought.

    tbh rfactor is dying.

I know I know Niels does amazing work (Stock Car is my favorite sim ever) but this will never get released so…

While I’m not exactly sure where exactly to place this video- a display of graphics or physics- but from my understanding ISI refers to their graphics engine (from rF1) as gMotor2 and the physics engine as pMotor2 and the the combination of thereof as isiMotor2.

James, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You were proved wrong in your massive post @ ISI forums. Then you ran away. Now you’re here hoping the uninformed will believe you.

Something for the Senna game maybe? Ayrton did test rally cars in 1986…

  • Big Ron

Look pretty cool. Maybe a bit too much sliding. But even gravel can have all levels of grip.

  • Niels Heusinkveld

Woah! Every little video I post gets picked up by Virtualr / Bsimracing these days. :-)

As ever, its a private project, not related to Reiza, looking at how to make tires that give gravel like performance. There is a lack of (really) good rally stages in rFactor. This was on a Rally Trophy conversion that isn’t crap but doesn’t feel like its set in the real world. The video is on a steep downhill section, there is a bit more grip when the car doesn’t want to slide off the mountain.. :-)

Corvette 4.0 is nearing completion though, so soon you can actually drive some new cars by Siim and me!

Nice physics … but rF is dying …

  • Juhan Voolaid

Ohh my goewd! It looks very cool! Come on, pair up with ISI and make this working in rF2!

Why arent you in rf2 team?

  • Anonymous

Thanks in advance for the new cars you will share with us

  • Anonymous

Yes, hate to admit it but rF will eventually die although it will still be around for quite a long time as there must be many sim racers who are reluctant to upgrade their pc to accomodate latest sim games.

Just enjoy what you get and stop complaining :)

  • http://twitter.com/sigmatc24 Sigmatc

    Ahh the complainer :)

  • http://twitter.com/sigmatc24 Sigmatc

    Very nice :)

I do not think rF is dying just yet, many people still drive it, as many people don’t have the PC power to run the new titles to get the most out of them, i know i can not run rF2 or any of the other new racing sims at max setting, i just can’t afford to drop a grand for a new machine.

…go on youtube and google ‘wrc mini test’.
WRC cars are much…much more gripped in than what the above video suggests, it looks like the car is on ice.

this tells me that the engine simply isn’t capable of producing realistic characteristics when over grip limit.

its a characteristic that you see in both rf1 and rf2, and its a total fail, because it takes all the enjoyment out of driving.

praise the lord for Assetto Corsa. EVERYBODY SAY TRUEEE

Are you planning or looking foward to elaborate this in rf2?

  • Anonymous

    ?

Please tell me what’s wrong with what I said above with a counter point or evidence , Anyone that is involved or knows about cars can see that the car is overly slippy.

Anyone that plays Race 07, GTRE, GSC ,Rf1 , RF2 to a high level regardless of what they enjoy would probably agree with what I said.

  • Anonymous

Niels I love your work , I was wondering in order to get the cars to behave as you do with more progressive grip loss and control when in a slide. Do you end up with cars that have slightly less grip than what there real world counter parts would have before the point at which they begin to slide ?

  • Eliseo

it looks good to be on rfactor but i think that soft surfaces simulation is not good in rfactor simple as that, rfactor is designed for tarmac not loose surfaces as gravel, on rbr eero pitulainen said that on the physics model for loose surfaces, they did some thing like layers of grip as happens in real life. When surface is “new” there are less grip than “old” surface the car sweep layers finding more grip on bottom layers as the surface is harder and more compact not loose, i thing this cannot be achieved on isimotor

  • http://twitter.com/Ghoults myName

You could make your own rally stages for rfactor with bobstrack builder.

  • http://twitter.com/_Jagdstaffel11_ ___ ɥqp ___

    Waaaaaaaaaahhhh!

  • C4

Could be good for worn or shallow gravel. Deeper gravel, mud, snow will be an even bigger challenge in rFactor. All in between may work, who knows? :)

  • Steven Ciofalo

Is it hard / impossible to have an rF1 car rally or otherwise transition from Gravel to Tarmac on a single stage? Dirt physics are usually accomplished by hacking wheel grip isn’t it?

  • Steven Ciofalo

This is correct but it has just become slang to call ISImotor, gmotor.

  • Eric Zehnder

Considering how many track-focused racing games/sims there are in development, why aren’t there any proper rally sims in development? Seems like the track sims are crowding each other out and jockeying for position in the market while the gap left by RBR remains unfilled YEARS after its release.

Note: I do not consider DiRT 1/2/3 or WRC 1/2/3 to have filled this gap. Most would agree they don’t stack up to RBR in a myriad of ways.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Karsten/100001285788249 Chris Karsten

Indeed good sir the simracing community needs a new RBR.

  • Anonymous

RF1 and RF2 probably run slower than Pcars and AC at settings that look nicer.

  • Gerald

It’s not dead if you are playing it. I guess rf players should worry about what everyone else is playing instead of what they enjoy. I recall bsrwix saying as beautiful as pcars is it is boring after 10 minutes. Well not with rfactor.

  • Gerald

I didn’t bother watching since I can’t play it anyway. Don’t really see the point if you can’t actually test the physics.

  • David Wright

I’d suggest there has been no RBR2 for the same reason there has been no GPL2 – there isn’t a big enough market for it.

  • Niels Heusinkveld

The lack of ‘over the limit’ drivability is what made start doing physics back in 2007. The engine does a very good job, but its up to the modders to make cars where this is possible. I am currently driving a car to 2012 F1 specifications with no cheats anywhere that is if anything too easy to powerslide, really its all down to the modder!

  • Eric Zehnder

Would you not consider Assetto Corsa, rF2, or pCars to fill the gap of a GPL2?
