New GTR Title Coming 2011!

Simbin has just annnounced to be working on a third installment of their popular GTR series of racing simulations as a new GTR title is planned to be released in 2011.

The title is described as going back to the roots of Simbin-style racing simulations and the studio promises a significant step up in terms of realism, graphics and immersion. The title will be equipped with new and innovative multiplayer features and backed by a comprehensive post-release DLC plan.

You can check out the first concept image of the title here, further information on the title is not yet available. It’s not yet confirmed which GT-style series the new title will focus on, there’s a possible hint if you want to speculate though as the concept image shows the pit-building of the Nürburgring – A track the new FIA GT World Championship races on.

Would be interesting to see if it will use rF2 engine (gMotor 3 or whatever its name will be)or they’ve finally developed their own engine.

If it’s going to be a big step forward regarding graphics, realism and immersion then i guess that gMotor 2 has been left behind finally.

    Good news anyway :)

  • drowsy

They better be using something other than gMotor 2. I just find it very difficult to even play any gMotor 2 based games after driving some of the more modern sims (in terms of the physics engine, anyway) like iRacing. That, and I’d love proper AI. GP4 still has the best AI of any sim, and that game is almost a decade old.

wha … what what WHAT ? I assume this is an April Jokes if not then /jaw drop

Na but seriously does that mean we can call it GTR3 ? since they say they are going back to the roots of Simbin-style racing simulations.

THEN the new racing sim generation is 2011~~ !!!!

If this is not an April’s Joke then hallelujah! They seem to finally come back to their senses. I’m curious what exactly they’ll use, can’t imagine either gM2 or gM3. Maybe they expect Lizzard to be finally done in 2011?

  • Harpo245

Just when I thought Simbin threw a custard pie at their own face with Race On, they annouce a game going “back to Simbin’s roots”.

yeah…not too keen on DLC actually. If other people are making free mods for GTR 3, I’m not sure Simbin is going to like a direct (and free) competitor to its DLC content?

    Site works fine here.

I don’t care about the game engine, I care about the end result, and if this really is GTR3 (i.e. one better then GTR2) this will be the sim of the coming decade.

  • Mr. A

Maybe “back to their roots” means they have contracted SMS to make the game? J/K :sd:

Anyway, this is great. I’ve wanted a new proper GTR title for a long time now. I sure wish I could do some beta testing for them again.

  • phil23

I think they mean back to a proper representation of GT racing.

GTR Evo may of had the cars, but was limited to shorter racing with no night racing etc as the race Series was based from Touring Car format.

Hopefully this will be the GTR3 we’ve been waiting for.

As for console concerns we need to remember we’re not dealing with Codemasters or EA here who may develope for Console first and then port to PC. Even Race Pro was very much Race On using the Lizard engine and though I didn’t have a wheel for my Xbox when I had it you could feel the better handling.

2011 could be a big year for us now with rF2 hopefully out by then and possibly GTR3  .

Oh this is great news. Interesting with the DLC, maybe simbin are trying to start something not really done on the PC.
    Cannot WAIT!

  • David Wright

Great news, though if you’ve read the announcement that the FIA GT1 series will be featured in a computer game then it’s not really a surprise. Ferrari and Porsche are not in the GT1 series so it allows Simbin to use their FIA GT license again. Simbin have also said they were working on the Lizard engine for PC so again – a new engine is no surprise.

But for fans of GTR and GTR2, the 2010 GT1 series is very different to the 2003/4 series. Short sprint races and no Spa 24 hour race. I suspect most sim-racers don’t race for more than an hour but if you do actually race for 3 or even 24 hours this won’t be for you. And there is no GT2 class, so I’d expect support races to be included as they were in the RACE series.

    @Haco,

    DLC = downloadable content

So, probably they’ll release new downloadable content after the main game is released (new tracks, new cars, etc). Not free, more than probably :)

I guess they’ll use the Steam platform to do such thing, as they’re already using it.

I doubt anyone holds total exclusivity, it was probably just too much money to ask for with a smaller release like GTR-Evo. If this is a PC only game I doubt most exclusivity stuff matters, since exclusivity is usually a thing between console makers. That and I don’t think anyone has exclusive rights to Porsche, they’re set to merge with Volkswagon group anyway, so a lot of those deals might change.

  • http://www.srrs-racing.net/ ermax18

I place my bets on this using gMotor3.

  • jgmonty

I don’t know what the current status of Lizard is, but I would expect its highly unlikely that GTR3 will be gMotor based. Until proven otherwise, I’m betting on GTR3 being Simbin’s first Lizard based PC title…

We will see, if I have to eat my words

What I’m really interested in is how much it will support Modding, understanding that developers in need of generating ongoing revenue may prefer selling DLC to opening it to modding. While understandable, I hope we can see a bit of both, like Shift. I have no problem with paying for good DLC, but its unlikely any developers can supply all that I want in terms of tracks, cars etc. with a pay-for-DLC only business model.

A security protection scheme to protect their original property, but still allow modding content, would be exceptional…

  • free2game365

ermax18: I place my bets on this using gMotor3.

It could just be an updated version of GMotor2, that’s what Need For Speed Shift used. Or at least part of it I believe.

  • carbonfibre

The only downside will be another 50/50 split in modding groups again but its never really mattered that much since most of the mods get ported sooner or later.

GMotor2 is a graphics engine. Shift’s graphic engine has nothing to do with GMotor2. Its physics engine used ISIs engine as a starting point, just as rF2 does.

    DLC = console release?

  • scca1981

    They’ll have my money if:

New engine. – Gmotor2 is done! Stop already. Even ISI is moving on.
Real Skins/Series (obviously going to involve FIA but don’t just give the cars and then put lame skins like GTR Evo and Race On. IF you must do this at least give us the paint templates when the game is released for once.)
    Night and Endurance Racing return.
    Dynamic Track Lighting returns.
    Headlights return.
5.1 or Higher surround sound support added.

Basically take everything you removed from GTR2 when you brought the race series games out, replace it and add a new game engine.

Now for the time being there are no details on the game. We don’t know what platform it will be (pc, console or both) or even what series it will represent. All signs point to FIA but its one of those wait and see things. I do hope “return to roots” means bringing quality back.

  • Grozni

As few already said, I will make a bet it will be rF2/gMotor3 based.

If someone can recall, when the Lizard engine was firstly announced in early 2007, it was said it will be available for PS3, X360 and PC.
3 years past, and the only game SimBin made on Lizard engine was RACE Pro for XBOX360 in late 2008… and no, it wasn’t that good. :weird:
Why GTR Evo / RaceOn weren’t Lizard based?
To me, all that Lizard engine seemed to me kinda of hoax.

Using ISI’s engine again as a platform saves SimBin the development of a new engine, so they may focus on making high quality content, though the downloadable content won’t be free, as iRacing, my guess.

Anyway, it’s a good thing that finally SimBin revealed any plans on their next product.

  • Uff

    Grozni
Why GTR Evo / RaceOn weren’t Lizard based?

Beacause that would have meant to release a new title at full price, while in this way they could release them at a lower price as Race 07 expansion and still getting money with the minimum effort. This probably gave them the chance to go on with the development of their new engine.
I’m really looking forward to more news about this title, as I reinstalled GTR2 just yesterday!

  • kill4f00d

But will it have iOpener support?

  • eddiespag

Great news, so I truly hope they can deliver in a great evolutionary or revolutionary step to what GTR2 was. As far as DLC goes, here’s my take on it. The original GTR and GTR 2 series had a patch or two released officially. After that, no more support…nothing. They moved on as business is business. So hopefully with DLC we can fund their ongoing support of GT3(?), at least for a few months, and have good and significant patches released to us.

  • Gaiajohan

    Simply great news.

  • R4z3rw33n

My bet is on the Lizard engine. Simbin said sometime ago that Lizard would eventually see use as a pc-sim engine.

Great news. With RF2/*insert new GTR here* on the horizon, the future looks good.
Variety is the spice of life.

I wouldn’t put too much money on it. I’d put my money on Lizard.

As for Lizard being a hoax – people have said the same thing about rFactor2. The truth is, both are real but developing a new engine for the PC takes time, both for ISI and Simbin. The big advantage of Lizard is they can use essentially the same game on XBox 360 and PC, something they couldn’t do if they used the ISI engine.

What Lizard and rF2 seem to have in common is they have been left behind graphically by other engines. Maybe Lizard for PC has been delayed to improve this.

Nah, this might mean they too are climbing in with SRW :) (just kidding).

Can we drop all the Aprils Fools comments now ? 60+ comments in and people are still harping on about it. It clearly isn’t an April Fools joke. Imagine the backlash if it were. Get Real ™.

  • Sensekhmet

Maybe the ‘DLC plan’ will involve something along the lines of RACE series? Meaning: GTR3 (let’s stick to that name for now) will be a base to which new ‘bricks’ will be added. I think it could work out pretty well: RACE expansion packs contained not only new cars and tracks but also new features and fixes. A ‘bare’ RACE 07 is a different game than what we have now with all the packs installed.

  • BenUK

Well if it is based on the new GT series, they will have to re-model a lot of the tracks as the only ones which are re-used are Brno, Spa and Nurburgring.

    So then we have;

    Paul Ricard
    Silverstone
    Abu Dhabi
    Algarve
    Durban
    Interlagos
    San Luis

All of which would need to be modelled.

  • fpol

San Luis is that AMAZING natural road track in Argentina right? If, *if* someone adds a decent version of that to a sim, I bet it would become one of the classic sim tracks (ala Nords, Spa, etc).

Well it’s good news that they’ve finally got a clue that they can’t keep re-naming Race 07.

But, let’s not forget they announced Race Pro once, and that was supposedly all new this and that, and it didn’t turn out that way at all.

And everything PC-related for the last few years has been dire.

I see no evidence from this announcement that they’ve sacked any of the buffoons responsible for running the company during this time.

Nor is there any evidence that they’ve hired a development team capable of developing a triple-A, all singing all dancing modern title (for whatever platform(s), but presumably at least PC, 360 and possible PS3 too )

No, this is just piss and vinegar at the moment, and simbin are full of piss and vinegar. This announcement just tells us what they think we want to hear, that’s all. It’ll be more realistic, have better multiplayer, it’ll have DLC (announced just after NFS shift shafted all the PC users)

Sure it will. But don’t hold your breath folks.

Yes, give them a chance, but I’d keep an objective view. As I say, there’s nothing they have released in the last few years that your average mod team, or even a developer working by himself hasn’t done equally or better, and their console effort was dire.

What magic is suddenly going to make them develop a brilliant game? The most likely possibility is that they’ll license an engine from someone else. With the most obvious choice being their old partners.

But in the absence of that, I expect the same as Race pro, lots of ambition and enthusiasm that their designers and dev team can’t live up to. I’d love to be proved wrong, but I’m certainly not going to get caught up in the hype.

One thing is for sure, unless they license the engine, they can’t go back to their roots. Because their roots left their company years ago. Wrote their best games for them (as blimey) and then did Need For Speed shift for EA.
