Need for Speed Shift – Sharp Tires Mod 3.1 Released

Julien Regnard is continuing to improve his much-discussed Sharp Tires Mod for Need for Speed Shift that aims to overhaul Shift’s tire physics and force feedback.

Version 3.1 comes with plenty of changes in terms of force feedback and other physic tweaks as listed below.

Changelog:

  • Better FFB, firmer in center
  • FFB drop when front wheels understeer can be felt more clearly.
  • Car CoG height is now real figure-> cars more alive, more challenging sometimes, lap times closer to real ones.
  • Tyres adjusted to be a little more difficult to recover when grip is lost.

The mod requires the latest version of Need for Speed Shift (1.02) to be installed, it works both with packed and unpacked versions of the game. Make sure to check out the mod’s readme file for more info and recommended settings to make most of the new tire behaviour.

Update: Julien has decided to stop distribution of his mod, the download is no longer available.

It feels really good! Much improved from 3.0 in my opinion.

The only thing I notice is on some cars the brakes make my car spin around very easy even if the bias is toward the front. Maybe it’s just me I don’t know.

    Hi,

This is a consequence of increasing CoG height to real figure. Car more easily oversteers when trail braking (without ABS). When you go very fast you have to take care to brake a bit earlier before turning…it is a bit more challenging compared to 3.0, but you can still go pretty much faster than real cars  .

In original game, CoG is lowered 18% to (I suppose) make the game easier. Cars almost don’t roll and behave a bit like irons. As a consequence, you can usually brake as strong as you want even when trail braking without ABS.

But if your brake is oversensitive, it may come from another reason: sometimes NFSS loses brake pedal calibration and then you can’t touch the brakes without sliding. To restore it you go in OPTIONS > GAMEPLAY > CONTROLS and you re-assign brake pedal.

thanks very much, again, jules! shift’s getting better and better, thanks to you modders out there!

Thanks for the reply, I will try that out. It does seem dependant on the car too. With the Evo I could brake pretty hard and be ok. The BMW Z4M on the other hand, spun verrrry easily with light braking.

anyways, excellent mod, it feels so much more playable now.

Many thanks for all your work in making this game better.

Thing is, i can’t quite understand why they didn’t make the sim mode more appealing to the sim racer fans in the first place.
I’m sure Ian Bell (or some rep ex Slightly mad) did state somewhere (Edge Magazine?) that the sim mode would require a wheel to play properly so the understanding was that it would appeal in its default state (its still playable with a joypad in this mode).
That said, i’m all for modders making this title better – i actually enjoyed it a fair bit in its orignal state – more to do with the white knuckle experience then the racing or driving although since this mod its improved massively.
You can now hammer the cars without too much fear that they’re lose it under you.
I’m currently driving with a Tier 3 tuned Skyline and already its popping my eyeballs out at times, esp. on tracks like Spa and for some reason i’m quite happy to keep returning to starting from scratch once i’ve added a mod.
