Two new preview videos of EA’s Need for Speed Shift are available, giving us a closer look at Road America and all cars in the showroom of the PC version.
Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

Other guides coming shortly:
We’re working on another 8 guides and the Nordschleife is one of those, we should have it in the next two weeks.

EA should hire the guys from team Orion or Team Redline, to do these track guides.

The videos are pretty awesome. Shift is a sim with some attitude. Acti0n is there any news on the demo? When it will be out?

I hope EA had a big enough budget to develop the “sim” part of Shift. There have been too many trailers and previews. They could have spent more money on development instead. Where’s the demo anyway?

Yeah some of those skins are abit suss lol. So are the cars all pre-tuned, or is there stock cars aswell? & was there no Ferrari or did I miss it?

Thanks actiOn; I’m pretty much sold now. Without the demo. If
nothing changes before the game release. I’ll buy it.

What kind of a lap guide is that? “Turn in before the apex”? WTH? You can make an intelligent track guide, you know, without assuming the viewer is a moron.
Game looks great. The promo videos just need work. Not that it matters.

Ignore the moans actiOn
Its a standard reaction to look for something to complain about rather than appreciate the good points – and there were lots in this video – I enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to more guides, but looking forward to the demo even more.

Theres stock cars too.
Also I knew there would be some childish responses to this. Every Shift video or news on here has some sim fanboys posting stupid or childish posts. If you dont like the game dont buy it but dont bother us who are looking forward to the game with your stupid posts.
Cant wait for the demo. Summer is over so where s that demo? (My calendar says summer is the start of may to end of july)

Have to agree, bring on the demo or at least a date! …though these guides are a very good idea.

I don’t relly see much of a graphics improvement over rFactor and GTR2. Just different 3d materials and properties.
Give me a sallery and a couple of months with the GTR2 source code… and some material editing. Take alle the textures to double resolution.
The cars look good, but again just seems like a matter og more polygons, different emaps, shading maps and new shading technology.
The thing that sets the game apart is actually not the graphics, but the atmosphere it creates.

Yeah, the same can be said about a drawing by a pre-schooler and a Picasso: the only things that are different are materials and hand movements.

Since when? Ive learnt in school over 18 years ago) that the summer in the calendar ends at the end of july. So the calendar in different ountries must be different to Ireland.
Also I must need to change my glasses because the last time I played rFactor with all settings at max DX9 they wouldnt touch the graphics in this game.

Lool no graphical improvements? XD
These track guides trailers are a smart move indeed.
They were specially made for those who think only free roam is interesting.
Great job andrew, finally a decent NFS since Porsche Unleashed.

‘I suggest you brake late or turn in before the apex…’
OR?
So if I brake late I don’t have to turn in before the apex?
And If I turn in before the apex I don’t have to brake?
God what a sh*tty track guide.
Also, when looking at those, speed, handling, acceleration, braking bars in the showroom, they are all the same. So a fast accelerating car, has a high top speed, handles well and is good on the brakes? The only car that I saw (before I got bored with the video) that had different bars was the BMW M3 GTR (e92). It had everything at about 80-85. Except for handling which was at a 100. Hmmm, what was is about the M3 GTR and Shift. Ooh yeah, almost every trailer featured that car, so it’s most probably the ‘advertised car’ of the game, and so it has superior handling…
Damn, I really got high hopes for this game after yesterday’s Pro Mode trailer´s, and it´s all gone now.

August 27th, 2009 at 16:28
That track guide seems to be made for hyperactive 14 year olds, I mean what can I learn about the track from a video that has 10 cuts per second?? I can barely make out the direction of the track when it already cuts to the next scene. This thing is the biggest piece of shit I’ve ever seen, a track guide is about educating drivers, it’s not a fucking MTV video.

I never said the game was bad because of the crap track guide.
I said I’d lost all hope in it after seeing the showroom video and all those bars being the same for all 4 categories.
You will only here me say the game IS crap after I’ve played the full version.
I’m sorry but is it so hard to understand what I’m writing, I mean, I know I’m not that good at English, but hey, if you take the time to read it it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out what I’m on about…

I’m just wondering about “stock cars” and “reward cars”?
Will the stock cars be available right from the start and the reward cars have to be unlocked by winning certain events?
Dillyracer
August 27th, 2009 at 18:50
argh, here we go again.
The cars are divided in tiers, every bar represents how good it is in a tier. Do you really think they’re going to make a BMW as fast as an Maserati MC12? They didn’t even do that in previous arcade titels.
carbonfibre
August 27th, 2009 at 19:20
Seems to me that a number of you think everything that doesn’t fit your exacting standards or definition on a topic is deemed rubbish.
Have you ever stopped to think that perhaps things are designed in a way that “fits to purpose” – a term thrown around a lot in design meetings? Why would a video posted before the game’s release be in this format I wonder…
On that note, I find the track guides for iRacing that you’re obviously using for comparison are “bad” because they are not engaging enough, the production values are very low and the commentary is unprofessional, moreover just freaky to listen too – these people who haven’t used a microphone for any other reason than VoIP often don’t cut it when it comes to presenting.
Skazz
August 27th, 2009 at 19:20
I think the track guides are neat. They are clearly aimed at people for whom the idea of a corner being unique or interesting (or challenging) hasn’t yet occurred. And looking at them in that light they achieve their goal: You realise that tracks are famous for special corners, you get those corners explained.
An arcade racer is not about identifying and learning hard corners, or about celebrating the challenges in motor racing, it has totally different goals.
Mojo66
August 27th, 2009 at 19:32
So the conclusion is that Shift is an arcade racer and therefore they’ve included the Nordschleife because it’s obviously the best place for 14 year olds dreams come true? Bullshit if you ask me.
Fact is, the “track video” has no educational value and should be called an MTV clip, or be played back at 1/3 the speed. Whoever made it should see a doctor.
gtrNL
August 27th, 2009 at 19:33
No.
The less cars have all the 4 bars at about 15% full and all the uber cars have the 4 bars 80-90 % full. So the bar does not represent how good it is in a tier, but overall (unless all the slower tier cars are also completly sh*t even in there on tier).
My complain is that all the cars have their 4 bars the same. Handling is 50, acceleration is 50, everything’s 50. And that’s just not correct. A Lotus Elise has decent acceleration, so let’s give it a 60%. Top Speed is pooh, so let’s give that a 25% braking is above decent, so 75%. Handling is supreme, so 90%. And that’s the same for all cars, and yet, judging from the showroom bars, all cars with medium top speed, must also be medium to drive, medium under braking and medium in acceleration.
Wouldn’t be the first time that happens (cough cough Gran Turismo, cough cough Forza cough)
But I’m going to stop posting here now, because I get the feeling that nobody’s reading what I’m typing…
First thing you’ll hear from me is when I’ve played the damn game…
Mojo66
August 27th, 2009 at 19:47
I completely agree, plus check the Audi R8, the RWD variant actually has better handling than the 4WD variant, how stupid is that? Those bars completely suck, at least in their current form.
Sensekhmet
August 27th, 2009 at 19:50
It probably means the game itself isn’t completely finished yet (doh) and still has placeholders in a few places.
I mean: come on, even NFS Undercover final version had those bars in order.
As for the cars: I saw in another preview, that each cars has a few icons: the ones that stand out are ‘factory’ and ‘drift’ icons. The last one is self explanatory (curses… I hoped I’ll be able to build an RWD Focus drift car, complete with rallycross style rear mounted radiators with side intakes… oh well), but the ‘factory’ one may signify either that garish, pre-made paintjob or perhaps better performance parts (kind of like Suzuki Swift S1600 in client trim has Sachs dampers and in factory trim mysterious, ‘no-name’ dampers, or how in old WRC factory teams had access to ‘development’ compound tires while privateers had to make do with standard ‘competition’ rubber).

Ok ok, I’ll comment again.
See, this is the problem I have with writing in English, I can’t really put my mood into it.
What I meant was that I will only comment on what I find of the game after I’ve played it. But yeah, looking back I do see what you mean…
But seriously, is my English that bad?
That doesn’t really make a difference to the point I was trying to make, but I guess you are right.

August 27th, 2009 at 23:57
With catch phrases like: “Breake before the turn” or “If your apex is right, you can take it flat out” it really gets me fired up!
Very intriguing
Actually it’s mind blowing, that they will share this kind of secret information with us mortals :D
Just kidding, never said that these were bad, just that IRacing guides are more detailed and make you more familiar with the track, rather that make things more confusing.

Ah, but you see I’m not talking about the script.
Might be worth reading what I said again.
(Just in-case you didn’t get it, I’m talking about it in relation to the purpose of selling the game.)
Also, I’m finding this rather weird too: Is the iRacing collective using some kind of search bot to find and highlight negative words with iRacing in the same sentence lol? Seriously, I may have to experiment with this more.

These comments are a joke sometimes. It’s just marketing and it’s showing off the track, get a grip.
If you want an educational track guide then trailers for a video game obviously are not where you should be looking.
Anyway, there was some good footage there. Track looks great.
