EA has released new previews of their upcoming Need for Speed Shift title, giving us a closer look at the Lamborghini Murcielago and the Belgian Spa Francorchamps track.
Introduced in 2001 to replace the famous Diablo, the Lamborghini Murcielago is powered by a 6.5 litre V12 engine. The also enjoyed limited success in racing as a GT1 car, competing in several GT championships and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

Actually, you want them to allocate less resources to a demo and more to the main game, bugs will be ironed out quicker. But I’m really waiting for this demo to come out.

I do love me a Lambo. But what is it with game developers and lens flare? Photographers go to great lengths to keep that crap off their images, and these doofuses deliberately add it in.

It would be better if they were using GPS or laser data for the track because the layout is not correct

LOL – I wondered how long it would be before we got this comment!
How you can judge the track accuracy from these screenshots I have no idea :)

So far, so good. This may be the app that nudges me into upgrading again – don’t need to for GPL, rFactor, Fallout3, etc., but sometimes eye candy is somewhere near irresistable.

Looks absolutely brilliant as usual! I hope the demo is not far away.
But even though I really look forward to this game, I can’t help but thinking about how a proper sequel to GTR2 or GTL made by these guys with graphics like this would have been.

What if they actually used it?

Our track layouts are extremely realistic. This is an area where we are confident we are surpassing the competition. We use data from multiple areas to ensure this. In addition to satellite imagery and GPS data, our track modellers have studied thousands of hours of video, ensuring that the experience of racing on a real life circuit in SHIFT matches every detail of the live onboard racing footage seen. Additionally, we have been extremely fortunate to have been provided with detailed racing telemetry data from certain racing teams, which allows us to reverse engineer the nuances of a track’s character through studying suspension movement, braking points, and g-forces on the real racing cars. It’s not enough to simply get measurements and photos. If you want to recreate the experience, you have to know the subtleties of the track’s surface contained in these data treasures that even laser scanning can’t deliver. It does no good to know about a 5mm bump in the track if you have no data to show how it makes a car react. And the reaction, the experience, is what truly matters.

But you get the lens flare and blur!

have they been driving on every track with every car or what is it that this is telling me?

If you don’t believe me just take a look at this… Even if they have nice special effects and textures … I really doubt that they used GPS data and official maps for this track at least…

That looks the same to me. The only difference I see is a more tight turn in the pitbox exit road…
I dont understand all this ceptcism. The funny thing is, this is NFS and if ppl are comparing it with other sims and real life tracks, that means its going to be better than ever.

I not sure Olisoft, but I don’t think that first pic. is from NFS Shift! Why? Because the billboards on the walls are different! Take a close look and see.

this does look like the pit road and run off area is slightly wrong, but that might be due to the camera position/FOV..
lets not judge the accuracy based on screenshots that been heavily edited in Photoshop…

Recently i was speaking with a 100% accurate source confirming that all Blimey tracks are GPS mapped, which according to source gives within 10 cm track layout accuracy.

The last screenshot was from a slightly different POV but enough to skew the perspective- if you tilt the last image down a bit, there’s no difference fromt he other two. Now that I look closely all 3 images are from entirely different point of view- so I don’t see the point in it.
JimmyB
July 22nd, 2009 at 16:40
Olisoft – It looks spot on to me. As mikem says, the Shift screen is taken from a much lower POV which skews things a bit. But if you take the real photo and overlay it on the Shift screenshot using PS, it’s pretty much identical – taking into account the different viewpoints.
But anyway, I’m starting to get sick of looking at this game. Where’s that demo?

the only thing I see on that comparison shot is the horrible outdated graphics on the left shot, rfactor or gtr2?
Olisoft

Absolutely not, the left screen is from rFactor and right screen is from NFS. Anyway it’s only a game so let’s have fun with the game when it’s out

The game is released somewhere mid september, so the demo will probably be available early september or maybe even late august.

Anyone saying “I’m buying this” based purely on screenshots is a sucker.
Does the adage “Never judge a book by its cover” ring any bells?
It can be pretty as it wants. If the physics ain’t there, it’s just frosting on a turd.

Game play videos are below…. hurrr.
UncleChuckle
July 23rd, 2009 at 01:42
And they indicate what, exactly, other than pretty pictures? Are you trying to claim we can adequately judge physics from a video?
ForzaBarca88
July 23rd, 2009 at 04:13
Yes. And unless those vids are inaccurate I’m definitely buying it….
Actually the only way you’re going to judge physics is by looking at the numbers and not simply playing it since physics are clearly subjective in simracing. Thats the only way to explain why LFS, rFactor, Simbin stuff, etc all claim to be realistic yet feel different in the physics department.

u don’t know that, any idiot can see these are photoshop blurred
DRat
July 24th, 2009 at 13:23
Well, I’m not an idiot, so I can’t confidently make that assumption. They MAY have been photoshop blurred, and maybe not. It’s premature to make any judgement except that external views of the Lambo and Spa do LOOK very good at this point. Anything else is truly guesswork, unless you can back it up with developer statements (like the apparently now-verified track accuracy).
In any event, screenshots are intended to give you an idea of what the game will look like. Of course it’s likely that it will have better eye candy than most earlier sims just based on technological advances.
For the physics, it is 100% wait and see. I’ve been fooled before by dynamite screenshots and pre-release demos, so my strategy has become one of waiting for the comments from the more discriminating reviewers and/or the early game buyers. If it’s tripe instead of treasure then some reviewers and most buyers will shout it to the world.

here is an image from their own site, save it to your computer, go to properties, then details and there you will see it’s been through the Photoshop.
what they have done to it.. who knows..
Maybe there wont be that stupid lens flare in the game itself..
Simbin has better photoshop artists, looks at the formula masters stuff, it look nearly photorealistic!

Ik heb het spel al uitgespeeld. Maar ik moet zeggen, er zitten nog
veel fouten in.
