Need for Speed Shift – Gamestar Preview Material

German Gamestar magazine has gotten their hands on a preview copy of Need for Speed Shift and made most of it by sharing plenty of new screenshots and a video with us.

Unlike the official preview shots, their previews give us a closer look at the game’s menu and upgrade system as well as plenty of other details.

Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

having a game with car customising and good physics is really a first for PC gaming

And you have to wait for years I think because this video is bad, very bad.

If you look at the cockpit it’s not so good as the other video’s we see here, even gtr-evo looks better

  • Siggs

triskele10, I would have hoped that the troll like behaviour on NFS shift articles had subsided, and only the interested people post :weird:

I can’t understand german fluently, did he say anything about car physics? the driving sure looked a damn site better than the EA led previews.

He said that it feels similar to Race Driver GRID

He said its feels like Grid. He also said that it felt nothing like old Need For Speed games and that it’s realistic.

I’m going to try the physics myself in the demo before I judge the realism. Don’t think a guy reviewing this game for a gamemagazine is a simmer who knows what people in the sim community call realistic and not.

I totally agree. We still can’t judge the physics because he also used all driving aids.
Some more translations for the non-german speaking people:

    - motivating point system (corner mastering, overtaking, tactics, slipstreaming)
    - half-linear campaign (have to start in lower series to unlock the higher levels)
    - automatic adjustment of difficulty level (you drive one lap and the game decides which difficulty to use based upon your performance. of course you can still manually turn off all aids)
    - tracks highly accurate
    - good atmosphere

  • ScHiRoCk

I find that motivation point system not a great addon, it just distracts you of the job you should be doing, RACING…

It looks good, but the drive still looks like it was in the shift preview vidz of EA. So i guess it will be a arcade game that is hard to master, that’s all.

Don’t expect a true preview from “Gamestar” about the sim aspects of NFS:Shift. Gamestar is a gaming mag for the mass market. The Preview has one aim -> the comparison with GRID.

iRacing got a rating of 68% from Gamestar (Reviewed by an incompetent author after 1 qualifying and 2 races only). I think, that says it all.

    O.K. I take that back.

WOW, THIS IS THE BEST LOOKING AND DRIVING SIMRACING GAME I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIVE.

Someone not sharing the same opinion as you is NOT trolling Siggs – stop acting like the ‘Internets Police’.

As for NFS:Shift – what they hell did they do to Brands Hatch?! The last part of the Indy section looks pretty awful.

  • stabiz

    Hehe!

  • Siggs

hehe, flame war here we come

I’m not trying to act like internet police (i hope) but it makes sense that the amount of previews of this kind that we’ve had, anyone who wanted to voice an opinion like that has had many many opportunities to say it already, and may have already done so. I’ve certainly heard that line a fair few times. I would have thought anyone who had this attitude, and was confident in it, would have long stopped bothering or gotten bored of making comments of that type, among the people who look forward to the game.

    But anyway, apologies.

About the physics, it’s dissapointing to hear he compares it to GRID. People say he’s still using all the aids? the driving still looks better than previous demo’s :happyevil: .

  • triskele10

    Hey Siggs

Why does everybody has to agree with you?
The guy who played Shift is from Gamestar, so if he compares the physics with Grid so be it . You don’t have to be dissapointed. :sd: :sd: :happyevil:

the ingame menu is soo action based lol.

another note, i been playing gran turismo 5 prologue this past week *i had it for a while but never really got into it til recently* , its pretty good, making mistakes in a race really cost you alot of time etc. Im looking forward to the release of GT5, SHIFT not so much , even tho i have a few friends who are preordering shift *these friends also thought Grid was awesome, and are waiting for Dirt 2*

If the physics would be good, then it would put all our GTR2,rFactor,NK Pro,LFS and so on , to shame. I guess thats what allot of people are afraid of, and therefore almost want it to be bad … jee ; i should have become a psychologist :-)

I can still live with all of them .. i Race iRacing , i Mod rFactor, and i love GTR. i even used to go in LFS now and then .. isnt it wonderfull that we have so much choice. on my drive there is room for some more..

  • hypertek

despite how bad the game might be to sim racers, they will sell a ton of this game and continue to make them.. spend tons of money on real racers and videos to promote the game and what not…

  • http://www.srrs-racing.net/ ermax18

I like the part in the video where the message pops up that says, “Sry for the f#$%ing bug !”.

Hahaha. Did anyone else notice that?

Of course it looks bad. What can you expect from a very low resolution cam capture?

IMO, the most interesting part in this video is the “Driver Analysis” screen after the lap of Brands Hatch Indy circuit.
There are 7 enabled options to set + 2 dimmed. From what I can see in this LQ video, the options are:

    - AI Difficulty – Medium (may be)
    - Handling Model – Normal
    - Car Damage – ???
    - Transmission – Automatic
    - a dimmed row with “Off” value
    - Anti Lock Brakes – On
    - Stability Control – On
    - Traction Control – Low

Seems the “Handling Model” option will work as in GT5P, which is a pretty good thing.

The “Normal” handling model could be aimed at the controller simcade players, “Arcade” at the arcade fans and “Professional” at the sim racers, eg.

If the guy drove with all the aids on, then it wouldn’t surprise me in the least that it would feel like GRID. Besides how many sims has this guy tried to compare it against ?

  • MadCat360

One of the VVV members who’ve tested it with a wheel and in full sim mode says it’s more realistic than Race Pro.

I’d say, given the dev team’s history, that is entirely possible.

  • pumaknight

I have to be honest, the game looks good….I only hope it handles as good as it looks.

  • Jack_NL

Hope the sucker gets leaked like the GTR Press Demo! wink wink nutch nutch ;)

roughly 4 weeks to go, would like to try a demo before buying!

You are blind, aren’t you? Please, launch your GTR Evo now and take one of the street cars to the track. Look at the low-res cockpit with no shadows, gauges in wrong places and wrong indicator scale. See?
Also, I’d never give any credibility to Gamestar guys, especially when a sim-ish game is involved. Before Polish Gamestar keeled over I bought it several times and it really had the quality of tabloids (whis is what Gamestar’s parent company sells for a living).

  • Skillcoil

If they said its like GRID then

This needs to be proved “Professional setting is more accurate to drive than in GTR2

“Difference between 3 physics-models is in assist levels, while lowest setting will provide around 10% of more tyre grip for beginners
    ” Already proved

“Professional setting will require wheel in order to successfully manage throttle/braking and steering inputs
” part of sim racing ?

  • Sodapop

It won’t take much to have better physics than GT5:Prologue. However, the more I look at the game, I don’t think it will have better physics than most PC racers… At least not without a little help from the modding community which is what truly has me excited about this title.
