Two new Need for Speed Shift preview videos finally reveal what many sim racers were waiting for – A full lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Even though the videos have been made with all aids enabled once again, the HD videos should give everybody a chance to check out all the details of the 16-mile track.
Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

Look’s and sound’s great. It’s also notable how the car moves around in a realistic manner, even with driving aid’s.

why do they keep posting videos of people driving sloppily and with aids… everytime i watch a video, the game seems less and less appealing.

Well the track layout looked accurate enough, my only complaint the complete spoiling of authenticity with those ugly EA adverts plastered on the road surface and everywhere else.
The arcade handling mode showed all it’s glory there, I wouldn’t want to drive that floating spaceship down nordschhleife.
I can only continue to speculate and pray that the difficultly modes sort the general handling mess out.

Nicely made track, terrible car physics. What’s with the car pivoting around its center at ANY speed. :|

Layout looks nice, lightning and shadows too. A little too mutch HDR bloom and blur but it is still ok. Don’t care about the adverts. Love the Reventon and its livery. The thing that really impresses me is how mutch the ppl making these videos can’t drive

Track looks great.. but as said.. looks like the guy driver is using a keyboard or a mouse.. the driving is bad, and if it were real.. he would have died many many times…lol… the physics look very unreal / too arcadey… but for non Sim fans it might be perfect.. nice try

The physic’s look like any hardcore PC sim with driving aid’s turned on, the acceleration, braking, weight transfer etc. are spot on, you also need to take into account the easier physic’s model which increases tyre grip. You do begin to wonder why the same comment’s about crappy driver’s, the use of control pad’s, using driving aid’s etc. keep cropping up, these video’s are coming from a variety of source’s, they are basic pick up and play set-up’s, not in full sim mode with a wheel. It need’s to sell million’s. Do PC gamer’s need to be lead by the hand at every opportunity, throwing their toy’s out of the pram unless every video or interview isn’t aimed directly at the hardcore PC sim racer?
You know exactly what will happen when NFS Shift is released, it will be slated by most of the PC sim community, just as GTR2, RACE and such is, basically anything that isn’t a mod. The same will also happen with GT5 and FORZA 3, irrespective of their realism and quality.

I think the “pivoting around its center” might be because of the stability control aid constantly having to correct the players bad driving.
To me it looks like the game is almost unplayable with a regular gamepad, which I guess is a good thing for a lot of people here(?).

I wasn’t expecting the track to as good as this- so it’s a pleasant surprise. Clearly, a gamepad (ie. controller) is being used- the clicking sound of the thumb controller is quite noticeable. Clearly it’s not a video for me to use as an indication of what the actual physics will be like. From a console perspective- this track is up there with GT4 version and with a much better grpahics and head + shoulder above the Forza’s version (which is as wide as the Autobahn).

Nice long video but still difficult to gain anything meaningful about realism, tire model etc. with aids on. It’s often hard enough to comment on those sort of things from just a video anyway, even of a fully fledged sim.
At least it looks very nice indeed, although the elevation of the course is way out in places – barely recognised the flugplatz section.
Hopefully the game is moddable so some of the vulgar and frankly weird trackside objects can be removed. I’ve also never understood why games advertise themselves on in-game advertising hoardings etc. Surely it’s not going to make people who are already playing the thing buy any more copies

All Right, still NFS
nothing for Simracer, my final judgement.
That’s for player, not for Racer!!!

I recall lots of negative comments about the physics model of Race Pro when we saw videos quite clearly using a control pad
That’s why I don’t play racing games on consoles as I’ve become used to full smooth control from a wheel not the constant sawing at the control stick just trying to go straight. Once you’ve tried the demo with your wheels or chosen device then make a comment on it’s breeding when you have some proof to back it up.
The circuit looked gr8 and the pre race scene at the grid was a lovely atmospheric touch too. I’m staying hopeful that this will take up some of my simming time

This is what i think about the vid and the game:
1. The driver sucks, sometimes he used the racing line too much, sometimes like at 3:52 second vid, he did’nt used it at all.
2. Driving Aids is just to much, look at 1:13 first vid, thats like driving a drifting car. If i buy this game, I will not use any Aids att all i think!
3. Graphics looks very nice but there’s too many adverts with NFS logo everywhere, the Ring is actually called the green hell and should look a little boring, in real simulators it’s one of the funniest tracks.
I know im a little too realistic and simulating but i actually expected more from this game, BUT (again) no one knows how this game feels except for these bad racing drivers! I want to see more before I can say I will like this game!

Some of the worst driving I’ve ever seen, even if it’s done with a controller!
The feeling of the track is totally spoiled by those imaginative advertising banners!
Apart from the shadows it does not offer anything that Simbin hasn’t managed in GTR Evolution.
So the track would not be an argument to buy this game.
The only thing that remains attractive is a list of very attractive cars that raced the 24h of Nürburgring 2009 there (Porsche 997 GT3, Audi R8 LMS, VW Scirocco, etc.)

I agree 100%. Everyone’s a self-proclaimed expert when 95% of sim racers have NEVER driven a track prepped car on a real track. These videos may not really show off much, but previous ones have shown a lot of hope for a at least “decent” phsyics engine. People can also stop with the comparisons to Grid. The game is NOTHING like grid and the videos prove it. Lets put it this way, if they showed a seasoned sim racer running a near perfect lap with a wheel then everyone here would say its too much grip and arcade.
Funny you mention Race. Race07 never gets any credit but many real life WTCC drivers have backed up its physics as being to as close to real as you will get.

Nice natural colors, no more that silly brownish tint at least. Very nice impression of bright sunny day but the HDR effect is way too exaggerated. And the blur is awful. That looks not even “cinematic” but mostly like a video from a cheap cell phone with wrong exposure settings. I want to race a realistic world full of different details and not just something smeared and overexposed. It’s a pity that such a few drawbacks make the game looks below its potential. Regarding the realism of driving I think it’s definitely set in an arcade mode. I still hope it will have the true realistic mode as they promised.

I agree. I mean you’ve likely just bought the damn game, what more do they want from you?
They’d rather put their own up-their-ass adverts on a track than the real ones, just in the vain hope it might help sell another copy of some EA product.
Not one person will buy an EA title based on an on-track billboard.
It only serves to annoy us.

Some people here have commented on the HDR. I think it might look a bit exaggerated in these videos because they have been recorded them with a camera pointed at the TV.

I agree about the ads even though I doubt I’ll actually notice them while driving, the principle is still a joke.
But all things considered it looks fine. Wouldnt mind seeing a vid with all aids off, a wheel, and a sober driver though.

Lolz, in real life he would be DQ’ed or in his case he would just have crashed the car after e few meters.
Nothing but arcade racing here…
And also, driving with a gamepad + aids on.
When will they show us a descent clip were they try to give some simulation feeling with a wheel and no aids on. That would give us an even better view of the game. But i guess it’s just a big big dissapointment

Just imagine what would be the comments if this article was titled “rFactor 2 – Full Nordschleife Lap Videos”.

There would be a lot of “wow”, “looks amazing”, “the next generation of sim racing”, “excellent tyre model”, “the cockpit moves so natural”, etc.
The psychology and prejudice play big role when making decisions.
Now more serious. I think the Nordschleife track layout is pretty accurate. Also, the car physics seem decent, although all driving aids are turned on – the stability control blinks continuously almost through the whole lap.
Hope talented modders like Com8
, will figure out the new file format and remove those annoying EA ads, though.

Has anyone else noticed the screen going black and white at 10-15 seconds in the second video? Was it another impact effect or some sort of ‘oh s**t! moment’ simulation?
Those of you that don’t race, don’t laugh. The ‘oh s**t! moments’ are integral to racing and they actually can be quite long, for example when I rolled my first car during an amateur rally (the car rotated out of control and clipped the apex and some truck tires dug in there) I knew one corner ahead this will hurt
(actually I said ‘ooooo kurwa’ not ‘ohhhhh f**k’, because I’m Polish)
