IGN has released four new gameplay videos of EA’s upcoming Need for Speed Shift title, showing lots of racing action taken from the Playstation 3 version of the game.
Furthermore, IGN has a very interesting hands on article available, giving a detailed description on the game’s career mode. Shift will be using a rather clever method to evaluate player skills, letting them run a single lap without aids and suggesting the right assists afterwards based on the performance. Plenty of more interesting info can be found in the article here.

..and thats how your driving looks and ends up being like when you use a gamepad.
At least I hope thats a gamepad because if it wasn’t, Stevie Wonder could have done a better job driving that GT-R.

enough of these aides on gamepad drivers…
also seen enough of this car and track.

“The game certainly has its own unique feel, where the cars perhaps feel a little more loose and squirrely than more hardcore sim racers like Gran Turismo and Forza…”
That instantly destroys your credibility, Fail.
But it’s not good news for Shift either.

Some guy’s post on the IGN review was this “aw man this sucks HUGE donkey balls… If I wanted something like a simulator, I would get Gran Turismo..”
LOL,…there’s clearly a TON of people out there who could give a rats @@@@ about simulators, unfortunately they’re probably the majority of ‘driving game’ buyers. No wonder the sim market is shrinking.

fOxx: how does it feel being the only mortal on earth with a PC version of Gran Turismo?
Apart from MS Windows Vista, shift must be the most flamed game out there. I am still amazed what people can come up with just judging a video. common people… grow up. Just like windows, most people will say its crap, but run to the shops to get one. a few hundred thousand will purschase it. I will for sure, if it was only for the eye candy. it just looks like fun , and it can sit happily next to my GTR2 – rFactor , GTL and LFS. If i want some more serious entertainment, i just fire up my iRacing account.

If he says the car is more squirrely in SHIFT than GT and Forza and he’s using a gamepad, then I would say it’s more realistic. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the game.

I literally can not relate to anyone who doesn’t want their game to be as realistic as possible. It makes absolutely no sense to me what-so-ever that someone would see that a game is realistic, and be disappointed in that.
And yeah, hearing people call Gran Turismo a hardcore simulator is getting seriously old. And I agree, that guy’s statement totally murdered his credibility.

Okay, a couple of things.
• Simple automatic-transmission logic is funny. Y’know, when you brake slightly, then accelerate, and the AT is shifting like 3rd-4th-3rd-4th. LOL.
• I like how the “racing line” is, more often than not, in the middle of the damn road. Right.
• What the hell were those block-looking things in the middle of the road in the fourth video? “Ohnoes, u haz hit teh barrierzz!!!! U loses!”

Looks like the racing line changes colour depending on when and how you brake. Not that I’ll be using it, but that’s pretty neat.
Also, I don’t know how anyone can fairly evaluate the physics of a driving game with a gamepad. It’s like trying to describe colour to a blind man.
All those commenters on the IGN site are retarded. If they want an arcade NFS, haven’t they heard about Nitro? I like that EA isn’t trying to please everyone with every title, but rather are making a different game to please everyone. (edit. turns out Nitro is going to be a Wii exclusive. Fail)

You CAN get too realistic. Like in NetKar, how you can run your battery down. Some concessions have to be made for video games sometimes. Realistic is better (to some people), but only to a point.

I figure he probably meant playing GT2 on a PS1 emulator.
I love Gran Turismo but would never dream of calling it a sim. It’s Pokemon with cars.
Mad Cat: Games would fail if that were the case. Imagine Half-Life 2 with realism. One shot, you’re dead.
I have no problem with unrealistic racers. The problem I have is when they’re billed as sims and clearly aren’t. Anything Codemasters have ever made for example. Not a single sim. And yet we’ve still got NFS being pushed as a sim.
Don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining.

I think I’ve found proof that Shift will be sim-ish. What’s the proof?
Simple.
99% of videos feature drivers who can’t drive for shit.

If this racing is done with a gemepad, we can’t have any judgement how it feels with all driving aids of and a proper steering wheel.
Blimey knows perfectly well most gamers have gamepads.
But for us sim-fooks they have hidden a really good semi-sim.
So many friends who see my home setup cannot make a decent lap with it (driving aids off).
After i show them how to do it.
They still can’t.
Only thing that comes out of their mouth.. to difficult for me and walk away.
So blimey just wants to make a mainstream game, for people who do not want to brake before the corner or other drivers.
If everything works out we can filter the wreckers from the real drivers on the servers. All thanks to the profile they got while driving.
So wait for the final release before we burn the house down!!!

I’m amused with how people still pour sh!t on GRID and comparing Shift with it – Without even played as much as a promo!
Also, I had a ton of fun with GRID!

I`d like to bet that none of the videos shown so far of Shift are in ’sim’ mode anyway. So gamepad or not, its pointless for us lot to judge it based on anything we’ve seen.

Given the comment about Gran Turismo cars sticking to the road better, I’d bet money he drives GT5P on R3 (highest grip) tires all the time and perhaps on standard physics. Even on R1 tires it’s pushing what is realistic even in professional physics mode (for a console sim). S3 is a better choice for a more realistic feel. From what I’ve seen it looks like Shift is going to be one of the best sim racing options available on the PS3.

OK, a couple of point’s.
1/ Ignore comment’s on videogame webiste’s, possibly even this one. Most people post because they wish to complain.
2/ It’s ridiculous to claim GT5P is not a sim, I have plenty of experience driving some of the car’s in GT5P, and have played most PC sim’s, and let me tell you GT5P stand’s up to much of what is on the PC.
3/ NFS Shift is aimed at the sim market as arcade racer’s have flopped on console’s. The only success’s have been Grid and outright ‘crash’ sim’s like Burnout, the market has moved massively in favour of sim’s like Gran Turismo and Forza.
4/ 99% of folk can drive a real car, so should be able to drive a 100% realistic sim. That’s very different to throwing someone in at the deep end with a sport’s protoype or F1 car and expecting them to drive quickly.
5/ A pad can be used to drive a sim, just as PC sim’s can be tailored to any number of controller’s, even keyboard’s. Of course the experience is not as natural as using a steering wheel, but you still find a significant difference between GT4 and GT5P, nevermind Grid and GT5P.

The only difference I found was that with a pad theres no usable force feedback – you have to rely completely on the visuals and sound for judging grip. Other than that, once you get used to playing with a analog pad theres no excuse for driving like shit. Dont blame the pad, blame the driver

I agree, I have no idea why some people think sims can’t be properly driven with a pad – They can.
I sometimes use one to do some quick laps for taking screenshots and stuff like that, and I´m almost as quick as when using a while – With no aids on.
So the conclusion that a sim can’t be realistic because it can be driven with a pad is completely wrong. Even iRacing works with a gamepad fairly well…

well all i got to say is—-as long as a game is fun,u enjoy it then its worth every bit irrespective of it being GRID/RFACTOR/GTR2/SHIFT or whatever.so its got more to do with living up to the expectations…….for the time being lets wait for SHIFT……and if u don’t like it then you can crib as much as you like(who’s listening anyway??)
