Need for Speed Shift – First Reviews Coming In

After lots (seriously…lots!) of preview videos and screenshots, first gaming magazine reviews of Need for Speed Shift are coming in, giving us a better idea of what to expect.

Both IGN UK (Xbox 360 version) and IGN US (PC version) have reviewed the title, giving it very favorable scores of 8.7 and 9.0 respectively. Even though mainstream gaming sites like IGN are quick to call racing titles realistic, both reviewers seemed to be very impressed with the way Shift handles. IGN also released a short review video you can check out below.

Another very interesting review comes from Swedish Gamereactor magazine as the reviewer praises Shift to handle much like GT Legends with better tire physics, calling it more demanding than other console racers such as Gran Turismo.

  • DeadStar

9.0/10 is an excellent score but IGN has the reputation of being paid of by Big Publishers to keep that review score high so I would not believe them until I am playing the game for myself next week until then bring on more reviews and previews to read and analyze.

  • carbonfibre

The Swedish review is better, even after a bad translation there are some very good points in there. Basically, you won’t have to be an alien to get the best lap times which is good because I find that very annoying in rFactor whereas I’m much better in actual races next to the people who play Mid-Ohio 24/7. The physics allow some “play-space” without spinning out, but smooth driving covers up the handling woes.

Drifting mode sucks, seems Ian insisted on hacked up physics even though “it isn’t needed” although I’m hoping it’s screwed up in a good way like rFactor so it’s still very fun.

The interface text is annoying, not sure if it can be turned down or off, and out of the 3 versions, the PC version is definitely the best, obviously.

That’s about it. Have to wait to find out what’s moddable now.

  • Skazz

The Swedish review was pretty intelligible through Google Translator. The comments about realism are very positive, particularly the reference to GTL physics with better tires. After all, the game simulates lots of road cars in addition to racers, and the handling of said road cars really does have to be loose in comparison.

Ok, PC version it is. Sold :)

  • ForzaBarca88

Well SMS did talk up their tire model a fair bit so I was always expecting it to be pretty advanced. Positive reviews are a good start tho.

  • FooAtari

NFS Shift may well be good. But IGN are hardly credible.

  • zudthespud

    Looks good.

  • Der_KHAN

“My expectations of bilfysiken and the körkänslan in Shift has been enormous.”

yeah, i couldn’t agree more! :sd:

  • mauricetgol

For the first time since I visit this site, there are only positive postings…

I know, it is hard to face the facts, but where are all these anti EA boys?

Gentlemen, xmas time is getting very close, the feeling I had from the postings and experience from some of our boys in here who really drove the game is even getting worse.

I know, I am 42 and I have to behave, but damned I want this game!
    I want it very much!!

Hope to meet you soon online in a race

  • stabiz

Hard to face the facts? I will be very happy if Shift is good, but I dont see any facts. An SRT review would help.

  • Spaceman

I’ve seen enough now and will definitely pick this game up next week.
This will sit nicely in my collection. Sure it won’t match i-racing et-al but boy Shift looks a riot to drive.
I KNOW I’ll have a lot of fun with this game. I just hope it’s well optimised on PC and plays well on the G25. Something that Grid failed at.

  • ForzaBarca88

Speaking of wheels and the g25, I havent read much about the force feedback in Shift. Hopefully theyve improved that side of it over GTR2 as well, or atleast allowed some user tweaking. Took me a while to get GTR2′s ffb to resemble something like realfeel.

  • Sommergemüse

Could someone Translate this swedish review?

  • choooops

    Google translate :)

  • Howie47

I think it will be worth 40$ (I’m single with no family.) Just to drive those highly rendered super cars. The only chance for now to race them on PC. All I needed to push me over was decent physics, and a game that works on my set up, (hardware). Looks good to me.

  • bdigital

I would prefer to get this on PC. But i think im going to be forced to get it on xbox.

This is because i have an XBOX 360 Wireless wheel, and although this does work on the PC, it does not provide force feedback on the PC (at least with any games ive tried it with)

So im kinda forced to get it on xbox. (in my books you gotta play it with a wheel right!?)

    2 things….

    1) Does anyone know if this game will support FFB for the XBOX wheel on the PC?
    2) Does anyone know the actual differences between the PC & XBOX version?

As a side note – looking forward to racing online with some of you guys….. Just need to convince the Mrs to get me a G25/G27 for xmas so that i can join in with your online PC racing :)

  • Sommergemüse

    1) Shift will support FFB – but no idea if the XBOX Wheel is supported
    2) No differences, but IGN wrote that the textures are sharper and the PC-Version is the best looking version so far

  • Mr. A

In the review from Gamereactor there are also complaints about input/steering lag in the console versions. Actually, the reviewer thinks it’s the game’s biggest flaw.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

Shift seems like its going to be a part of my collection too. Despite the multitude of videos and previews, I’m not going to miss out on this one.
Its going to be fun and I only hope you can turn off or reduce that blur, and black/white effect when you crash. That’s going to do my head in if not.

  • choooops

Big difference when it comes to look between PC and Xbox, since Xbox doesn’t support AA or AAF, which makes it look like crap, Imo.

  • Sobby

Any ideas if this will run on a single core.

Since the dual core requirement is only a 1.6 I was hoping my 3.4 P4 would manage, any thoughts?

  • logos

Wow, the swedish review is really good!

The reviewer compares NFS Shift physics to GTL and GTR 2. By his words the physics are even better than GTL, especially the tyre model. Seems the guy knows what he is talking, since also mentions GPL, GTR, LFS, “Ferrari Project”.

Can’t believe there’s already a torrent for the ntsc xbox360 version. By tomorrow there will be thousands of leechers.

Before anyone says anything, no I’m not going to download it. I’ll buy the PC version and maybe the ps3 version aswell to support SMS so they can pump out more great games for us. Ferrari Project, GTR3? mmm :)

I can’t believe there ISN’T a PC version PC version out for download yet, since reviewers have the copies, and that usually means they’ll be up on the internets soon enough. I think it’s good that it isn’t up tho, already preordered my copy :D

  • Bekim

lol. I’ll admit it can be tempting

  • Raikku

I’ve already pre-ordered PS3 version. We’ll see if it come in next’s week end as scheduled.

Have to say that if I want to try PC-version, I might ask help from one of my friends who uses torrents a lot…

  • Sommergemüse
  • Jos

GTL and better tire physics, hmm sounds like power & glory to me :P

  • Howie47

Jos: GTL and better tire physics, hmm sounds like power & glory to me :P

    Or “HistoryX”.

  • carbonfibre

The greatest thing about those cars is the body roll and the involving driving experience. Shift will be all road cars, just what we don’t have enough of in rfactor. If shift does do DLC one day, maybe we’ll see some single seaters, though that’s the opposite of what the fanboys dream of.

Honestly have those arrogant youtube kids forgotten NFS Online? Let us have our realism now and we won’t ask for it any more.

  • Husky42

Game is not actually all that bad. Just had about 2 hours on a 360 over at a friends as he snagged a backup copy and tossed it on his modded 360. I’ll still reserve judgment for the PC version as I do not play racing games on consoles but the title is very solid, and it is damn tough with a pad. Though I do not console game often I cant say too much about physics and such because i purely rely on input at the wheel and he has no wheel. But so far with what I felt i believe the translation on the PC will be nice indeed.

Scene release within the next 24 hours

  • Sommergemüse

Yeah is here the new torrent discussion board?

Montoya should report your IP to next police office…

  • stabiz

Yeah, piracy is so 18th century. (I know pirates existed before that, but it was the golden age)

  • Husky42

Who discussed a torrent? Who mentioned a torrent?

And I’ve not done anything illegal by playing something over a friends. And also due to privacy acts i “could” admit to downloading a title and nothing can be done without clear cut evidence that the data was transferred over my line.

Also for an administrator to provide any sort of user information to “police” is a violation of the United States Internet Freedoms and Privacy acts that are in place. If the information is given without a court order and without my permission it becomes a huge legal issue in which you can rest assured site administrators do not want to find themselves in. Of course, the police cannot act only on a posting or heresay. In order to be convicted a court must come up with clear evidence.

I just mentioned having a hands on and that there is a scene release suspected, that go’s far beyond torrents and is in no way a “discussion” on where to or how to get content.

So grow up and get off your “high and mighty” im better then you attitude.

  • michael

Well Husky, Queen Gertrude said something about protesting that’s often quoted and probably apt

Surely there are lots of similar, if not the same laws that will protect whoever gave your IP to the authorities from having his IP given, even if they admit to it here, without any clear evidence blah blah blah blah? :sd:

This could tie up the courts for years…

  • Husky42

I believe its rather cut and dry given our federal laws. But thats neither here nor there.

I couldn’t care less what somebody does or does not do.

If shift is good, people should/will buy it.

Pirates will always pirate titles, many of them end up purchasing those titles that are really good. Heck, look at COD4 – No demo when it first came out, I downloaded, played the first level and immediately left for the store and bought it.

If developers would quit ripping people off they could expect more sales. I’m all for a try before you buy business model but developers seem to ignore that user base.

I love the ISI approach, download the full game that time expires, sure it would be cracked by release groups but it makes it easy for people to purchase the title. That method works for people like me and I wish more companies would do it. Of course, this is why i love steam so much, the digital distribution method is IMO ideal.

Some person saying that I should be reported to the police for doing nothing wrong.. well that’s just funny. Benefit of the US, we still have more rights then those in say Germany or the UK in regards to privacy and freedoms.

I just love it when people think they are worth a damn, remember, your one person in a world of billions and your life is just as insignificant as mine or the next persons. Start viewing it all as a cycle of death instead of life and its much easier to simply.. not even give a darn about anything at all. Accounting for peoples differences and beliefs and trying not to be self loving with your opinion thinking that it is you who is corrrect at all times makes it much easier for everybody else.

Or in short. I dont give a shit what the german know it all thinks. My life is mine and I provided my thoughts from a hands on. When the PC title is released I will purchase that title IF and only IF i feel the PC version is worth it. Without a demo thats pretty hard to do. Considering you cannot return software in this country $50 is a waste if you only use the title once right?

  • stabiz

    Nice.

  • Sommergemüse

Husky what you are doing (COD 4) is against the law on the whole world …

  • flowie

I don’t trust any reviews written by people who are not simracers themselves. Although I have to say the german review looks quite promising. Let’s see it this way: If Shift can satisfy simracers expections it’s ok. If not, who cares?

Boy, you’re in for a surprise somewhere down the line in your life… With attitude like that, you have a pretty big chance of ending up penniless or dead.

    Sommergemüse:
Husky what you are doing (COD 4) is against the law on the whole world …

Not sure what your getting at. I own COD4. Yes i “tried it” before I bought it.

Admitting to downloading stuff does not bother me in the slightest. Hell 70% of those with internet access in studies here on the internet are claimed to have downloaded content illegally in their lifetimes. Thats a large percentage when you think about it.

I’m not here to discuss the “legal” “illegal” ramifications of something.

I will not spend my cash until I have the chance to fully evaluate a title. Its as simple as that. Every game that I play on a constant basis I always purchase.

I really do not get what your trying to prove.

Is me not saying I frankly do not care not good enough for you?

Not being able to return software a commodity that is purchased and should be subject to returns IMO really is another nail in the coffin for game companies. When you purchase something your interested in and spend $50 on that title ($60 for PS3 games) And that game ends up being bug infested, does not run or is not enjoyable to the point you only get maybe 20 or 30 mins in I feel I should have a right to return it.

In the US people cannot return software. I will always try before I buy – with demo’s or other means if necessary. I buy a lot so publishers and developers alike are not missing out on any money, give people the ability to try a full product, or a very unrestricted demo and the ability to return software and i believe sales will go up. Right now my rights as a consumer IMO are violated. $50 is a lot to spend on something you may only use once.

Oh I might as well add, there is a reason I use Verizon.

As a company they refuse to hand out consumer information even when they are ordered via court. They fight the lobbyist and stick up for the consumer of their services.

They even optimize their networks for torrents and other p2p applications.

Out in DC one of the few internet providers fighting for its customers is Verizon. ;)

Anyways, I really do not want to argue or bicker. Its pointless and leads nowhere.

I simply stated I had the chance to try Shift and I liked it. I expect on the 15th I will wake up first thing in the morning and head over to Gamestop and pick it up :)

Then decide between not caring about anyone (clearly stated in your earlier post: icluding unattentive drivers and people fishing for your wallet I assume) and being god’s gift to the world, OK?

Hey guys guess what, this is a site about racing games.

Anyone else here love playing racing games and doing skids?

    Yeah me too.
