EA & Slightly Mad Studios have released a first patch for the PC version of their recently-released Need for Speed Shift title.
The patch adds support for multiplayer via local LAN networks, adds mouse navigation to the menus and speeds up the game’s loading times – One of the main complaints of many Shift buyers.

I have a HD4890, and the game ran just fine on max here, probably dipped into the 30`s at the start, but settled in the 50-60 range after that.

what about what about what about…
As least this is something. Lets be grateful for that at least.
Maybe the other things people are complaining about is going to take a little more time and will come later.
As least we have something more than before so thanks for these fixes so swiftly.

Cool it fixes the oversteer/understeer issue.
This fixes the the steering setup problems that you DER_KHAN could have solved just by puting the balance all the way through to oversteer.
There will be more patches certainly, Im happy they released this one already ;)
Im liking the game alot specially with the FFB tweaks.
cheers.

Where is LAN mode, I can’t find it?
BTW, I completed the game yesterday, it’s great fun and definitely best NFS title so far.
Thank you EA!

I have an 3870 X2 and have good fps, except for complete game freezes every 30 seconds or so, in which the screen freezes (and the sound) and comes back after about 10 seconds, biggest trouble of all, in those 10 seconds the game continues, so when the screen comes back I’m in the wall…
Had the same problem with Tom Clancy Hawx and Far Cry 2. Was fixed thanks to a ATi hotfix.
One of the reasons I’m really looking into getting a new gfx card.

See here for wheel profiles, that greatly improve FFB in Shift (reduce lag and deadzone to the minimum):
http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164378
For G25 profile look for Juls’ post #10.
For DFP profile look for Bramski’s post #18.
Seems the game uses an updated gMotor engine with new tyre model, so it has modding potential.

Thx for the patch, SMS/EA.
Now looking forward to fix the other stuff on the ToDo-list.
Sim or not-Sim …… Shift is definitely one of the best parts of the whole NFS game series.

Try the post #63, its the best one so far.
That with the configs of post #41 (except for the values of acceleration and brake sensitivitys to 0%
And you’ll have a great FFB feeling.
This proves this game has plenty of potentialities :)

Yes that is super fast support and no one should complain. Since there is nothing wrong with the steering; don’t look for a fix! Unless it has to do with your dual controller bug. Or the reversed “tuning” switch. Which a ten year old can over come.

Wow, that was fast. Does anybody know if it fixes the crash on NVIDIA systems if you change the Shadow settings?

PErfect:
Oversteering corrected by adding simple setup functions.
Load times drastically reduced to 10second to load spa with 15 cars. ANd about 3-5 to unload.
Mouse control :) :) in Menu.
ANd for me now it’s gettin better. Let’s see which other improvement they include.
And another thing once oversteering is corrected physics feeling improves and are more similar to others such as GTREVO and GTR2.
Thanks EA!

It’s good to see that they released a patch: fixing ATI support should take more time than adding mouse support, but at least now ATI users have a good reason to hope it will be fixed.

Try running in win98/me compatibility mode.
Also for any with ATI issues you can try that as it worked for me. I also noticed some improvement by disabling Catalyst AI in CCC.
BTW my loading times actually INCREASED with this patch.

Please include in a patch options to disable crowd animations and bloom. These two alone will greatly improve FPS.

Warning: If you do that (on Vista x64 at least) Shift starts only using a single CPU core, rather than 2 cores. i.e. CPU can become a bottleneck.

I’m not having much luck with those configurations, while they did improve everything the car is still undriveable if a small wheel input is needed, basically every straightaway, entry, and exit. Steering is extremely laggy still with my G25, completely unacceptable. I can’t drive a stock 240sx straight, after owning one in real life for 3 years.
The patch is an improvement but should have been implemented months before the game was released. It’s not quick support, it’s terrible planning.

Unlocking tier 4 made me realise how badly we need a fix for our wheels and the physics now. Some of the faster cars are generally screwed up; take the Nissan GT-R as a good example, (no FFB tweaking is going to sort out that mess) as well as the insanely difficult AI on car battle modes that seems to stick to the road round corners while you are madly fighting your sideways motion just to stay competitive. As pointed out, you cannot tune these cars ether which makes a bad situation even worse.
I can only echo the vast amount of other comments on this now but I’ve reached my limit on what else I can put up with. I would have been fine with the way the simulation side was standing up as long as the game played fine but now that side is also quickly dying, soon I’ll be putting Shift down altogether.

It’s a shame you need to put some effort into tweaking the controller setup,
I really think SMS/EA shot themselves in the foot here.

Quote from another forum:
“the funny thing is… when you rename shift.exe to gtr2.exe then it runs more smove, better resolution and the loading-time is not that long,
i think thats because many drivers detect then a gran tourismo thing…”
Although i don’t know what “smove” means…

you know what? you pc players need to shut your mouths and stop complaining i joined this forum because i was looking if anybody had mentioned any tuning problems and find out people are having the problems i am and being able to game on a pc is way more expensive than buying a ps3 or 360 and therefore less common yet you are the first to recieve patch but still complaining? makes me sick to my stomach, almost brought a tear to my eye cuz i was so excited for it that id give up 70 bucks to my play it the day it came out only to realise i had been cheated once again by ea …wheres the damn ps3 patch huh? when will ea realize its not always about the money or compitition but actually making a game to the fullest of thier abilities with the actual gamers experience in mind???!!!

This does not work for my system. But at least i can play as long as i don’t touch the shadow settings.
f0xx
September 23rd, 2009 at 14:56
Well there are in fact some tunning problems, but if you tune the car with more oversteer and more grip it will be more stable.
Its ridiculous when you console players say “oh paying for a PC is way mroe expensive than a console”.
You’re wrong (period). I payed 500 euros with mine and I can run about everything maxed out (without graphic lag yes) and Im able to to other stuff not just playing (we pay for that aswell) ^^
A guy @ATI Forums said this:
“I was on EA Support live chat last night because I didn’t recieve the Promo code for the Porsche Cayman S (which they resolved). Whilst I was there I asked about whether they were working on improving performance on ATI cards. He told me that they had had a lot of complaints and that their engineers were working on it.”
Good news ;)

man what a pos that game is!
i was hoping that it might be fun with some fixes. i installed the patch, applied the custom ffb settings (which are indeed a huge improvement)… but still the driving model just sucks §”$%$&/alls! understeer, oversteer, understeer, oversteer, … and nothing in between.
this is the last time i’ve wasted my time with this POS. they claimed shift would set a new benchmark in physics and that there’s a tire model more accurate than anything else. i’d like to sue sms for those claims as they were just all-out lies!

September 24th, 2009 at 21:37
Oh is it ? Oh well it must be true then
Its only happening because you are forcing NVidia to use a different preset profile.
Might be more sensible to create a new profile for Shift to match GTR’s.

For those who hate (as me) to see intro videos and videos just go to Movies folder, Add them to a zip or rar and delete them :)
Day by day I feel the game better and it’s quite addictive. Physics are difficult but manageable. I miss some bumps in oval track when going from inside plane road to outside. I miss some other things such as real damage and materials degradation of course and manage setups and be able to get a setup after a race. I hope EA add more functionalities.
Great game in any case and very fun and adictive.
