Need for Speed Shift – Eight New Screenshots

EA has just released eight all-new high-resolution screenshots of their upcoming Need for Speed Shift title. The shots show various cars racing on road and street courses, including the Audi A4, the Porsche Cayman and the Pagani Zonda, all in fictional race-trim.

Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (formally known as Blimey! Games), Need for Speed Shift is planned to fix the series somewhat ruined reputation when it comes to realism as simulation physics have been promised. Shift will be available for the PC as well as gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 & the Playstation 3 in late 2009.

With less motion blur (or even without it) it would be perfect: let’s hope we will be able to remove it.

The first Italian review talks about beautiful graphics (of course) and a nice driving model, with cars that feel heavy in a right way, even if the game won’t be a full simulation. You will also have the chance to damage the game, it should affect your performances, but won’t authomatically bring you out from the fight for the victory.

We should expect a compromise: let’s hope it will be a good one. :D

This could turn out to be an excellent addition to the semi-sim genre I think.

But I still hope SMS can release a full simulation game later on. With eye candy like this (minus the motion blur) and the excellent physics and immersion we know these guys can do, mmmmmmm, that would be awesome. :sd:

Will it suport open wheel racing.? and will it be modable.?

what will happen with Ferrari Project? nfs would never be a real sim for sure. the graphics looks amazing. if i imagine a really good sim with these graphics, woho. thats how ferrari projekt have to look like.

does Eero Piitulainen work on the nfs shift projekt? you know the rbr physics programmer. if i understand it right.

and the blur is cool, i like it. bloom effects are awful, but decent blur is a must.

Well, I’m pretty undecided about how this game will turn out, but I’m definitely a big fan of Slightly Mad’s engine. Would be nice to see a proper sim utilise it one day. Who knows, if Shift does well we could theoretically see a number of titles using that engine.

I hope we will not end up calling this game Need For Speed ”SHIT”… easy j/k…

The GFX look fantastic. As long as it handles more realistically than Grid i’ll definitely pick it up regardless if its a full sim or not.

Did a little searching and it looks like a ton of different hands-on previews have cropped up today – EA don’t mess about. So far I’ve only read a couple but they’ve all been incredibly positive it must be said.

Joystiq – “the game is 95% pure racing simulation, with a bit of arcade feel thrown in so as not to totally alienate players who aren’t actual race drivers.”

lol, a game reviewers idea of a sim is not very good :P

I dont trust any reviews till i get my own hands on it lol.

  • JimmyB

Day/night cycles and different weather conditions are in as well.

So as I said before, even if Shift ends up being a disappointment from a sim perspective, they’ve still got what looks to be a fantastic platform to build future titles (sims!) from.

    word richiespeed. word JimmyB.

but ea just bought a game, i dont want to call it nfs after underground and so on, if the game is really that good as in the reviews.

well done sms, if thats not too soon to say. but i think only the engine is it worth to say that.

lets hope for a 100% sim with this engine.

  • Serg Funke

oh sorry i mean undercover…prostreet, carbon, most wanted  underground 1 and 2 were really good arcade racer.

  • mikem

    More from Joystiq review:
“Even in its early state, SHIFT feels really good. The cars seem to have appropriate weight and noticeable performance differences. There’s a perceivable hint of assistance — hence the dash of arcade-ness — in the steering beyond the usual traction control and braking assists. We were told that the game will essentially have a driving model that eases new sim drivers into the concept and one for seasoned pros.”
Sounds like there will be a simulation mode as well.

Those screens looks a bit too gamey with too much contrast imho for beeing realistic. I prefer rF2 screens for more natural look. Also have a suspiction that the purpose of the blure is mostly to hide the low resolution nature of the game world.

  • Serg Funke

i recommend to read the other previews.

    from shakenews:

“The controls felt like a sane balance between hardcore accuracy and arcade looseness–a scheme I was able to get into with a little patience, but one complicated enough to not offend a hardcore racing fan. Pulling too hard in one direction resulted in a quick smack into a wall, but a little drifting was possible with enough skill. Shift isn’t Grand Turismo, the reps assured me over and over, and I was certainly placing higher than I usually would in that series.”

  • Vkt

i piss off on those previews , as a harcorde simracer that i am… i can’t believe on what a simple gamer says.

who are these guys¿? no way…

  • Uff

Blur just to hide low-res game world? I don’t think so: with that engine they can do everything they want without having to hide anything, imo.

  • Jack_NL

I hope its gonna be a great game for sim racers too

in a first preview i said if its not they can get the finger
that was when i was in a bad mood, im still sorry for that towards SMS

  • XaliaS

I still see the ‘sparking edges’ anti-aliasing problem inherent from the same NFS engine I recognise from what, the last 5+ NFS titles?

This bad mentality of EA to keep stacking on poor foundations when it comes to graphics is a problem I’ve seen steadily grow. Now I’m seeing these complex 3D cockpits on top… Do I need to mention the horrible performance bugs Underground had? *shakes head*

Why can’t they just package up their engine sound recordings for sale?

  • Uff

This engine should have nothing to do with previous version (also considering the fact that it’s been developed by a completely different team). Aliasing may depend on what settings were used and (mainly) what platform the screens were taken from.
