Need for Speed Shift – Driving Aids Comparison Video

Below is a new Need for Speed Shift video that compares the so-called casual mode with the pro mode, showing the differences between both difficulty levels.

The video is narrated in German, it starts in the driving aids setup screen and proceeds to a race on the Nordschleife with a 600hp Dodge Viper. The first part of the video shows the casual mode which includes stability control and even auto-braking. Starting with minute 1:35, all aids are turned off, causing the Viper to become more of a handful. The car can be seen spinning on the grass as well as on track, the difference between both modes is very well noticeable.

Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift will be released on September 15th (North America) & 17th (Europe) for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift is expected to be released any day now.

  • Disposable_Hero

I think the pro mode looks quite sim-like (wheelspin if accelerated too hard).
Fuck the demo, i just preordered NFS Shift :sd:

  • mauricetgol

Yes, yes, yes. We have to wait untill we drive… but gentlemen, this looks very promising seen from the simside…

The german people explain that there is enough for everybody: an arcade mode (to discover the track) and an sim mode.

And yes, your car breaks out….

I hope we all will be putting the pedal to metal soon.

  • Skillcoil

Thank god. we’ll have a chance to tweak deadzone/sensitivity/disable auto clutch.

I heard them saying Simbin at the end, anyone know what were they talking about? (I guessed they meant NFS shift pro mode is as good as Simbin Race Pro WTB translate ><)

  • Jack_NL

:ooo: last sentence of the message

“A demo of Shift is expected to be released any day now.”

This weekend would be purfect! :bigspliff:

  • sediol

With all aids off it doesn’t look very realistic to me …hope I’m wrong

  • Howie47

Yeah, I came here this morning looking for the demo! I’m already sold on the game. But it doesn’t come out for two plus weeks. For Pete sakes, what do they expect me to do. Go to work or something?

Quickly after saying Simbin he says “ex simbin”, I guess since the devs pretty much are the original simbin dev team and the current simbin just has the name.

  • Jos

wow, notice the 58 % steering deadzone, must be gamepad settings :P

Montoya, thanks for the explanation. I saw this video a week ago, and suspected they are driving in Pro mode after 1:35 – now I’m sure.
I think this video is from the latest issue of Games Aktuell, where they review Shift.

The new simulation engine of SMS looks more and more promising. So, now I’m more eager to try the demo.

Would be awesome though, F1 weekend at Francorchamps and a demo of this game.

Not getting my hopes up though, just another random claim on the internet.

The video looks so promising, a bunch of options including how you want your damage model to impact the racing.

  • Chrisuu01

The pro mode in shift looks fun :D

No cockpit view, fuck it lol

    I love the graphics though.

Don’t you think a preview video of a new game that is yet to be released, and with some trepidation over its ‘sim’ validity, might actually look a lot better if they had someone driving the car who could actually drive!
This tells me nothing about how the car handles with or without driving aids as it looks just as bad in either mode. Agree?

Looks very good. If it wasn’t for this site, I would have still thought that Shift had no hope. I was looking for a video of shift with the pro mode and finally came across that Datsun video posted on this site. I have to say I’m looking forward to this now, the Datsun on the ring looked amazing.

    Things are looking good…

September: NFS: Shift and a Playseat Evo
    October: Forza 3
    December: GT5 (hopefully)

It’s almost the end of August which means the demo should be out this weekend or latest 31st August doesn’t it? I hope it comes soon, dying to try this with my G25

I think they forgot to simulate dampers, the cars bounces like GRID game. And they should simulate tires to, and actually try to make the car drivable by tires, not like some sort of hovercraft. Fails. Nice game though.

  • carbonfibre

This is the holy grail video we should have had months ago!

My prediction all in all, is that some of the supercars won’t handle as realistically (as difficult/have too much grip, no aero effects, etc.) as what we’re used to in rFactor or iRacing, but a few cars in shift’s line up will feel very real and those cars will be the selling point for sim-racers.

What else is excellent, is that now people won’t just be pointing squarely at the fastest cars from the offset just to beat the game any more, although the career will force the tiered events too, people should be driving the cars because they are fun to drive at the end of the day – should be very successful in that case.

We require the Datsun in our demo. :sd:
P.S. drdryvillage; yes I noticed that too, seems to be a relic from previous NFS titles, doesn’t look good.

when we have the demo we should be able to discover if game is moddable too, plz let it be!

  • schuubars

Just to mention, the third part of the video is “normal mode” inbetween the “arcade” and “pro” settings… But i want to see a video in in pro settings AND Cockpit view….please.

Hope the game is moddable to some extent, now simbin coul’d use the perfect opportunity to release RaceOn on lizard. ;)

  • kill4f00d

SimBin should have released RaceOn earlier. They missed their opportunity now that Shift is in the spotlight. Demo now!!!

  • Skazz

Waiting for the demos here. I still have no clue whether to get the PC or PS3 version.

I know I should just get the PC one, but I have this nasty feeling it won’t be as polished as the PS3 one. Ah well, we’ll see. I just hope the PS3 version can be run to exactly the same level of realism as the PC one.

I have to say this video and the Datsun one reveal more of the game to me than all the other videos together, including the official ones from EA.

  • UncleChuckle

Hmm… They’re leaving the demo release awfully close to the game coming out. This does not bode well.

Though I admit I am looking forward to finding out which camp is correct. The “It’s going to need the “F” removed from its title” crowd that I’m in, or the “It’ll be a great sim” crowd.

As I said, I dearly hope I’m wrong and it turns out to kick ass.

  • kill4f00d

It would be really cool if we could mod it too. I’m sure Slightly Mad Studios would be ok with mods, but I don’t know about EA.

  • Mr. A

I’m not sure what category this game should be filed under tbh.

They have always claimed that the physics engine is advanced and realistic and it looks to be decent at least.

But the actual gameplay and layout of the game, how races are setup and so on. seems much more closer to arcade type games.

So even if the game would have the most realistic and authentic car physics yet to be seen, I still probably wouldn’t put it in the so called “hardcore sim category” since there are some features “missing” such as pit stops, tire wear etc. And I don’t think they ever intended it to be that. It looks fun though, and I’ll buy it.

But throw in those extra features, full damage, real time day to night lighting and the fiagt license and it would probably make an excellent GTR3.

Btw, to those in here who aren’t afraid of arcade games I can recommend downloading the demo of Dirt 2 (for X360 or PS3, no demo for pc yet I think). I absolutely hate Dirt 1, because it had awful physics even for an arcade game. But Dirt 2 looks like it could be really fun. I tried it on PS3 with my G25 and it was much more playable than Dirt 1 (but still very much arcade of course), it also had support for seq. paddle or stick shift and also H-shift.

Well EA don’t seem to mind the modding of Fifa etc so hopefully it will not be an issue and Ian Bell said some time ago that he didn’t doubt that the talented Modding community would have a play with Shift. That sounds like a little wink to the modders to me  .

The part where he play without aids, the Viper is so badly damaged that it might be what’s making the car lose control when he’s trying to go straight.

Looks good to me, better than Grid and maybe a good offline mode for driving system.

SMS… I’m all In… hope your first release is worth the hard earned bucks as I’ve pre-ordered mine from Amazon with Elite Series included… plus same day shipping/delivery for anyone interested. meaning you should receive the game on the release date…. all for about 6US dollars shipping.

  • Howie47

No it is not going to be the Sim to end all Sims. I think everyone is just looking for it to break some new ground in simulation. Hopefully putting pressure on true Sims to live up to what they have produced. Other then that, I think it will be some fun for “Sim” racers to play with. It doesn’t have dedicated server. Might or might not have a way of adding modded tracks. So how far it will reach into the true Sim racers universe is still a question. But we know it won’t be the ultimate answer. rFacetor2 is our best hope at the moment.

    Howie47:
No it is not going to be the Sim to end all Sims.

And it never claimed it was going to be. That’s something the community cooked up and many jumped on the bandwagon. So far there is no sim to end all sims and there probably never will be. They all have their faults including $racing.

As far as modable, I hope it at least has the ability to paint livery’s. We have rF, rf2(someday), GTR2, GTL etc for full mods. Regardless it won’t prevent me from getting the game if its not modable.

Judging from all the videos it will be a solid “racing simulation” with up-to-date graphics, decent career mode and sim-like phsyics. Best of all, better than Grid and the videos prove that already.

I think the pricing sucks. $28 pre order for this junk when you could buy a track and a car for iracing for much the same. Much better value for money IMO.

Think of it in terms of money spent against time using it, and iracing makes much more sense.

What, do they have to give games away for free now?

I really do not see what you’re trying to say. This has nothing to do with iRacing.

One car and one track or a game with 60 cars and about 10 tracks, sounds about right for some people I guess.

  • JAGUAR1977

With regards to NFS Shift I think it’s quite clear we’re now looking at the same type of differences between GT5 vs rFactor or GTR1 vs GTR2 rather than Grid vs iRacing, in other words if you enjoy driving simulations you’ll enjoy NFS Shift.

  • Howie47

It’s the driving and racing experience that is the most important to me. How deep is the immersion? A combination of ever thing. To me it looks like “Shift”, will be ahead of iRacing in that department. So is rFactor mod’s like “HistoryX” for that matter. All kinds of ways to save allot of money and by a 32-40″ 1080P monitor. I’ll put iRacing on the shelf, until like netKpro, it grows up.

LOL thats hilarious. Thats all I’ll say.

On another note, I havent seen anything that suggests it looks any better than GRID, atleast not after you install the graphics tweaks for it. Thats hardly a negative tho, GRID looks pretty damn amazing with everything maxed out.

That is another problem with some of these other ultra Sims. Their using last generation game engines. What made “Papyrus” so great to begin with, was it’s top notch game engine. Which iRacing bought. But now that is 100 yrs old.(in soft ware years). Slightly Mad Studios, may be taking that advantage away from ISI with this new game engine. iRacing has fallen way back and is being lapped.

  • Raikku

…We definitely don’t need “Crysis-like” game engines to Race sims; Buy now, play with lowest settings and pray that you can maybe rise settings after 3-5 years…

iRacing’s engine doesn’t have that much in common with NR2003, except for some parts of the netcode and (non-tire) physics. Besides, take the advantage away from ISI? Since when have they had an “advantage”?

  • stabiz

Supplying near all recent racing sims with the game engine must be called an advantage. The rest of Howies post is nonsense.

Yeah, it seemed like he was talking about graphics engines, and it’s hard to see ISI having any advantage on that department.

Anyway, Shift looks good, but extremely over-processed and filtered to my tastes. It looks impressive and flashy, but not at all natural.

If you look closely, the loading screen at the start of the video explains the ‘factory’ mod you can do to the cars, which I spotted earlier. So, presumably, a GT3 will become an RSR for example, but the question is: tuned cars are not subject to motorsport rules, so will we get a GT2 RSR or a RSR look-alike with twin turbos for example?

  • kill4f00d

I hope that we have options to adjust the post processing effects. I don’t want too much bloom or hdr. If I play GRID for a few hours in a well lit room, I get somewhat sore eyes.

Rotaries are extremely hard to capture for games, there still isn’t a game where they have nailed it, esoecially a 13b. Enthusia did pretty well though. One car and one track or a game with 60 cars and about 10 tracks, sounds about right for some people I guess.

Anyone who thought that my original comment was serious, I was just trying to wind a few people up. I dont normally do such things, but hands up, I was on this occasion. Sorry !.

On a more serious note, yes I do subscribe to iracing, and after reading a prior post and a sh*t load of comments on pricing rather than the actual topic of indycar, I thought I would be as stupid and make a nonsence comment in here. Every post in here on iracing is just an opportunity for people to slag off the pricing structure.

I am hoping that that Shift is good fun…..as my PS3 is gathering dust at the moment.
