Need for Speed Shift – Driver’s Experience Videos

EA has released four HD videos of their Driver’s Experience series, showing several well-known race drivers at work in their car.

Notable drivers like Andrea Bertolini and Tommy Milner explain the key elements of racing as we get to watch them doing what they do best – Driving fast.

Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

You can say whatever you like about EA and Need for Speed, but these videos are really nice. Perfect way of advertising a game imo.

  • Jos

yep, these guys know how to sell their game…unlike pc sim developers.

  • Shum94

It’s kinda confusing this promotion would be perfect for a GTR 3 but this promo for a game where we keep seeing arcade gameplay is a joke to me.

  • Howie47

Go to YouTube and EA has Shift ad across the top of the front page! With link to the Shift homepage.

    DITO :ooo:

PS: Oh and if someone at EA is reading this, if you have left overs that you did not use for the promo vids, upload them to youtube too

Let me edit my own post with a quote from speedhunters.com :D

BTW Speedhunters will be releasing our own extended remix versions of each of the Driver’s Experience films over the course of the next 2 months. There is so much incredible HD source footage to play with, we thought you’d enjoy a version of each video which sits with the various camera views a bit longer, so you have more time to get into feeling of the car.

Looking forward to the full uneditted version of the clips !

Why do they embarrass those drivers by showing the intro of some kamikaze crashing?

  • hypertek

so what do these guys gotta do with the game? lmao
you dont see Gran Turismo or Forza games being advertise like that, they just give you the game when they come out.

  • carbonfibre

The videos gave me the impression there would be LMP’s and Ferrari’s in the game since they kept getting in the camera frame so much lol.

Also, the sounds of the actual game aren’t at least as bit impressive as what EA are suggesting. It’s a shame the professional industry could never get away with loud and distorted “proper” engine sounds that we can get away with in mods like Historic GT. Those sound far more similar to real life recordings than perfect synthetic “politically correct” engine notes you find in most racing games. I think that’s what spoils the atmosphere most of the time.

These are great to watch. If anything else, they manage to show motorsport as brutal, ‘dirty’ business, there’s nothing ‘lol cute’ or ‘omg nice’ about it. I already mentioned it in earlier comments, a competition car is usually just a pile of scrap metal after a few seasons, even if it didn’t have a crash.

  • Jos

right, I’ve played nfs undercover and the sounds in that game are way better then any pc sim i’ve played….

exhaust notes are much better and offcourse enveromental effects like reverbs and echoes….

hear sounds car sound bounch against buildings, driving through tunnel sounds just like it should like…

oh, and not to speak of 5.1 sound…

  • Sensekhmet

Also, NFS series since the first Underground (I think… not sure) has turbo/supercharges sound effects that are INDEPENDENT of the engine. This does not seem like a big deal until you fire up GTR Evo for example and try to a drive a turbocharged car… pathetic. And don’t even get me started on BOV/CBV/turbine stall sounds that are simply different SHIFTING sounds.

  • ronjon

ea sure knows how to milk the crowd

  • O11

WOW, a lot of slow motion to regular speed-flashes accompanied by random bass pulses and momentary sound muting.

EA sure knows what the troglodytes like.

  • Sensekhmet

Thank you for badging everyone who liked it as a troglodyte.
Also, Chris Rado and his Scion-ish thing: what series is this? I guessing some time attack series?

Why would you want to simulate a recording with distortions? Go to the races, hear the engines for yourself. Nice and clear. Natural, wonderful sound is best.

Is anyone else starting to suffer Hype Fatigue over this title?

Interesting marketing strategy here, though. You’d think if EA were going to pay these drivers to sell their game, they’d at least mention it.

  • f0xx

    Cool vids.

IMHO these vids were made specially for ARCADE fans that think that driving in closed circuits is boring and dont give a damn about “feeling” the cars and the need for speeed.

Vids itself dont truly represent what we’ve seen so far of Shift but I believe SMS will give us true hardcore physic simulation ;).

    cheers.

  • tommymilner

    Hey guys –

I’ve yet to try Shift the way I’ll play at home, on my computer with my ‘sim racing’ setup, but what I have driven on XBox and PS3, it feels right. A lot of the gameplay that’s been released does make the game look arcadey but I think we’ll end up pleasantly surprised. I’m not on EA’s payroll. It’s just what I think. There are lots of cool eye candy things that I’m sure a lot of the hardcore sim racing types won’t like or will turn off but if my computer can run them I will.

    Hi Tommy

Thanks a big bunch for leaving a comment here, I´m sure most readers will appreciate some first-hand info a lot.

Best of luck in the remaining ALMS rounds this year, I´m a big fan of the M3 and follow your progress closely. Keep on showing those Porsches and Ferraris what BMW Power is about

  • Sensekhmet

Thanks a lot for your opinion!
As an amateur competitor, licensed track marshall and motorsport junkie (I’m afraid it’s an addiction for life… and that rocks :sd: ) I have a lot of respect for professional racers. It’s always good to hear what they have to say.

  • Mark

    Thanks for the reply Tommy,

video(s) look really amazing, your car must have been filled up with cameras :sd: (also on your helmet?).

If you find the time to play at home and are allowed to share that opinion (at this site) with us, would be welcomed ;)

    Hello Tommy,

Thanks a lot for your reply!
I would prefer always the race car driver’s opinion about a computer simulation, than any PR person’s or simracer’s opinion.

Would be great if you test NFS Shift with your sim racing equipment and share your impressions with us. Especially how accurate is BMW M3 GT2 in game compared to real life.

Wish you successful ALMS season, and hope we will see you next year in 24h of Le Mans.
