Need for Speed Shift – Demo Coming In A Few Weeks

A few days ago, the news that EA won’t be releasing a demo of Need for Speed Shift before the title’s release has caused quite a negative uproar among many interested buyers.

Here’s good news for everyone who wants to try Shift before buying it as EA will be releasing a demo of Shift after all, just not before the release of the title next week.

The demo is planned to be released in late September or early October, it will be available for the PC and the next-gen consoles. The demo will include the fictional London track as well as Spa Francorchamps. Players will be able to try five different cars, including the Nissan GT-R, the BMW M3, a Lotus, a Dodge Viper as well as an unlockable Pagani Zonda.

  • Husky42

That is good news. Glad to see they are going to come out with a demo but this will still hurt their sales i suspect.

I still do not get the lazy business model of game companies such as EA who complain about piracy but then they do nothing to reverse the trend but alienate their customers through restrictive DRM.

Release a demo ahead of the title or at the same time of the demo gives people a good chacne to try and then buy the same day if they want. Considering that sites will get plastered with a full working copy that can be quickly downloaded prior to a demo release many users will try the full title first and then make their decision, the publishers then use the numbers and do not account for the users that went out and bought the title and will claim they lost sales to piracy when it is likely not the case in the numbers suggested.

But overall this is good news.

  • Gabkicks

they shoulda released the demo before launch -_-

  • Paul Kelly

Still very cool that it appears that maybe community complaints caused EA to release the demo. Maybe they are listening to racers and potential customers!

    Take care,
    PK

  • AeroMechanical

I don’t see that it’s a big deal whether the demo is released before the game launch or not aside from the fact that it would just be cooler for it to come out sooner in general. People on the fence can still try the demo, they just have to wait a couple weeks after release to do so. Moreover, that’s about the right time for proper legitimate reviews to come out anyways.

Moreover, that’s pretty good content for a demo. One of the better tracks in the game, plus a fictional track that may or may not be good, and a very healthy selection of cars.

  • orubasarot

As already said, good luck having this demo come out before the torrent. Speaking of which I’m going to go hit refresh.

  • UncleChuckle

Several console versions are already leaked and online. Both PAL and NTSC releases are out for the Xbox on various sites.

Love EA’s marketing here. “Oh no, we’re still doing a demo”. Just not early enough to hurt their opening week sales where most games make the bulk of their money and people have found out it’s crap.

  • Couth

I wanted a demo to find out which version to buy. I went the safe way for with the PC version, but I would have rather had it on consoles.. If they turn out to be equal Ill be a little ticked

  • FooAtari

it will be available for the PC and the next-gen consoles

Surely the term “next-gen” for the current console line up should be dropped, it started 3 years ago! Not sure why the next-gen tag has hung around so long…

Anyway, good news think Ill wait for this before getting the game.

  • DW

I see the lovers of the conspiracy theory winning over over the cockup theory again :)

To redress the balance my theory is that last minute issues with the game meant there wasn’t time for a pre-release demo. In a perfect world of course we should get the demo first and release dates shouldn’t slip but this isn’t a perfect world. And since everyone who has actually played the game likes it, I think we can discount the theory that there is no demo because its crap.

Kudos to SMS for keeping to the release date (assuming nothing changes in the next 3 days :) )

  • Skillcoil

    ****************************************************

Guys I just got Need for Speed Shift for PS3. pretty much the game is uncomparable to other any racing game. (SMS said that.. and its completely true)

I’m playing it right now with my G25 .. It’s waaaay more fun than Gmotors(GTR2/rF/etc).

P.S. I cannot decide wether it is a hard core sim or not .. but it’s really fun racing game .. I never tried other Handling modes .. I switched straight to Pro mode.

Shift will have no DRM and no Online activation, only SecuRom with Disc Protection

  • Husky42

I was making a generalization, not referring to shift.

However, SecuRom in itself is a bad deal for many. Including that alone will put off a good percentage of buyers and force them to pirate it. SecuRom is quite frowned upon due to its access. It is essentially a virus that embeds itself into your system and has the potential to destroy Disc Drives once again limiting a persons ability to play the title.

It needs to be dropped all together.

Though I do not personally have any issue with it and will still buy shift.

    Skillcoil, thanks for the news!

Please keep us (the poor ones who are waiting for a pc release(date…)) up to date with your driving experience. Reading news from one of us, is always the best to read.

If it is possible please show off on youtube :sd:

I’ve said it before, No one is FORCED to do anything. If you don’t like the DRM don’t buy it. There is no excuse to download the game Im afraid. I do not agree with DRM at all, I despise it. But pirating the game for any reason DOES NOT help. EA won’t listen to the excuses they just see one more seeder/leecher in the pile. Even saying “well I tried it and bought the game” doesn’t matter a damn, the damage is already done. Every torrent EA see just makes them think they are right to put DRM in the game.

At the end of the day, it is their game, to distribute in whatever state they see fit, and you do not have a god given right to play the game. If you don’t like the DRM/lack of demo, don’t buy it, simple as. If you hurt EA financially AND don’t download the game, thats the best way to protest DRM. Exact reasons I didn’t buy Crysis Warhead or Spore (although turns out Spore wasnt that great anyway)

    +1
If you pirate the game its just a vicious circle since DRM is meant to counter piracy. More piracy = more DRM

Or less, depending on what company it is.

There are companies who have said “Our DRM infested game didn’t sell very well maybe we should drop the DRM.”

Smart companies have already figured out why people pirate games and adapted. See Valve.

Languages: Danish, Dutch, English*, Finnish, French*, German*, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian*, Simplified Chinese, Spanish*, Swedish, Traditional Chinese
    *languages with full audio support

There is a reason why they translate their games. Russian pirates pirated games because the pirated version was translated while the copy they could buy in stores wasn’t.

Of course ever person have his/her’s reason to pirate a game, but we know one thing, DRM has NEVER stopped a game from being pirated. They are still out on the internet days before the real release, DRM hasn’t helped anyone.

Give the pirates a reason to buy the game and they will, extra online content etc works great.

i buy the Demo next Week
without any Polemics Testing, without any Fear..without any Gaga Sim or Not Sim Diskuss !

  • Sensekhmet

choooops is right, piracy in Poland fell sharply once publishers started translating games properly: by hiring professional interpreters and actors.
It didn’t solve the problem, but less people bother with torrents.

  • steve30x

My solution to try before I buy will be to rent this for my Xbox360 first and if I like it I will buy the PC version.

All Valve games require Steam and an Internet connection to play. You think that not a form of DRM?

World of Goo had no DRM, and was reasonably priced yet was still widely pirated. Sadly simply not including DRM in your game doesn’t seem to have much effect, well not enough to discourage devs and publishers from including DRM anyway…

Sorry, but Husky you are the biggest idiot ever seen ? 12 yrs old?

Yes delving into name calling and making rude assumptions sure shows that of somebody with great intelligence. I’m an A average student. A+ this past quarter in every single one of my college classes. I’m quite positive I am no idiot.

    What makes me an idiot?

The FACT that SecuRom damages systems? Gains Hardware access to at i believe the Ring 0 level by pretending to do so at 3? It disables programs, will not run with virtual drives and even disables programs that are designed to monitor your system (sysinternals apps and securom do not get along)

Its a malicious bit of software that has caused known damages to peoples systems.

How this makes me an Idiot I’m unsure.

DRM hurts the consumer and the publisher. There are large groups of people who will not buy games with Securom. SecuRom is just as bad as Starforce.

    Read more about Securom here:

    http://www.reclaimyourgame.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=61

Personally i find it no big deal.

Lets look at Stardock Games – There titles have no DRM no Securom no activation and do not require the cd to be in the drive – They are strongly supported because of this.

Anyways, I do not give a shit. I really do not. My spoons are silver and I’m just a selfish prick. (or so i’ve been told) Even if thats all true, at least I’m happy in life. I give money monthly to starving kids in Africa and Indonesia so I help out where IMO its most needed.

Really I cant see why I’m being ganged up on, well I can considering its the typical assholes doing it. The ones who complain and have no idea on how to think about something subjectively and learn to balance out pros vs cons.

The type of people who may read something, or watch a tv show about something and think they are smarter because of it, the individuals who do not study fact or learn how to apply simple basic rules in judgment and analysis.. oh well… I’m an idiot? That is laughable. Phi Theta Kappa, 4.0 GPA the past two quarters and because of a B slightly lower overall at a 3.89.

Yes, I am a twelve year old idiot…

I agree with you completely there but there must be a logical reason why developers continue to use securom, safedisc, etc since it does actually cost them money to implement. Maybe they know something we dont?

Anyways, personally I’m just happy we dont have to put up with shit like Starforce anymore; still not sure what Simbin were thinking there

I cannot think of any logical reason to use SecuRom myself. It is immediately stripped from pirated installs and it has never been much of a barrier for crackers.

In the end, all the developers do is hurt themselves, they spend more on DRM (securom is drm/copy protection) yet the titles are all pirated anyways and DRM completely stripped.

Securom is pretty much a root kit. And being that image files have legitimate purpose installing software that can permantely damage your hardware and cripple software is borderline illegal. The fact of the matter is game companies are being sued for their inclusion of SecuRom. A lot of the time it is not even the developers fault but a requirement made by the publisher –

In the end, it does not hurt the pirates one bit but does hurt consumers and developers alike.

It all needs to be done away with.

Sensekhmet – I post some pretty basic information and you continue to be some sort of smart ass. Whatever your deal is with me, well who really cares. Your opinions and thoughts are as insignificant to me as the waste i toss in a toilet.

Go take your internet morals and do something productive, you know, something to better society. I can think of several things, Volunteer at a hospital, Go donate plasma/blood, hold the door open for elderly people as often as possible. Go play games with the elderly at an old folks home. Go down to the Boys and Girls club and help an abused or neglected child.

I’ve not got to do a lot of the above but I’d like to, I volunteer my time as an escort at a local hospital, and maybe if you tried something like that you would be a little less of an ass.

  • Sensekhmet

Sorry, I don’t feel like being Jesus Christ. Instead, my priorities are focused on getting as much money as possible (which doesn’t seem to go according to plan – big surprise there, sheesh) and blowing it all racing. I see no reason why I should exert myself or put myself in the work’s way, so to speak. But I do what needs to be done and I never avoid taking responsibility for my actions. So there you go, there’s at least one person in the world who’s by your criteria inferior to, your Smugness.

  • Husky42

But money is not a means to happiness, and if all you strive for is making money will you truly ever be happy?

I value relationships with family, and helping those less privileged then myself at having better lives instead of focusing on my own selfish needs. I make little but that little I have I still share. And really all I need to leave it at this. Fuck off ya tosser. You sure as shit seem to have your own smugness about you and he who cast the first stone is just as guilty as the next person, and recalling correctly.. your the dumb ass who cast the first stone.

And what the fuck does some mythical cunt such as “jesus christ” have to do with this?

Husky, There seems to be no end to offensive attitudes, is their. Not enough to use rationalization to justify your thievery. Damage the Gaming industry by not supporting their hard work. Money is not means to happiness but spending it sure is.
Right now, my happiness increases as I see your ego making you hot under the collar. Amazing. Such an impeccable, intelligent and well educated, top of the slice person has lost their nerve and starts cursing because someone on the internet, who could be a 14-year old Taiwanese kid, stuck a pin somewhere it apparently hurts. This, I find this truly amusing.
But cry not. Somebody has to be a bad, bad person. Without such persons, prefect people like you would just emanate their awesomeness into the perfect boring void of other perfect people, who because of their perfection would not be impressed at all. Oh, by the way, do these perfect people find the concept of stealing software hard to understand, just like you seem to?

Your right, that was uncalled for. I apologize as I allowed myself to get sucked into the conversation. So for my comment I’m sorry, its not fair to insult other peoples faiths or beliefs, though everybody could learn from that.

I’ve played shift, I enjoy it. It is not a Sim. But it is a damn fine game. I just cant wait to pickup the PC version and start seeing how open ended it will be.

Sensekhmet – Your right spending it is but it also leads to bad habits if a person spends outside their means.

As for the concept of stealing software, no i understand the implications that come along with it. I understand the full extent of it, but I do not care. And I’ll continue to do whatever I want whenever I want. I have a good selection of real friends and find them turning to me for advice and support often, in fact some of them are leeches but whatever they can still be fun.

Anyways, this really is about a game, one that I’ve purchased so I see no relevance in my “piracy”

Anyways, now back to my football game on the 50″ plasma, w the MK and Bostons and Paradigm sound equipment. Damn I sure like silver spoons!
