Need for Speed Shift – Another Gameplay Video

Following the much-discussed IGN gameplay videos of Need for Speed Shift, Gamespot has now released another video, showing a busy road course race from cockpit view.

Developed by Slightly Mad Studios (former Blimey! Games) and distributed by EA, Need for Speed Shift is expected to be released in September 2009 for the PC and all major consoles. A demo of Shift has been announced to be available this summer.

why does every car have that annoying whining noise….

  • BNR32

    Arcade game, as expected.

  • carbonfibre

What the hell? The NFS series is supposed to hold EA’s best library of exclusive sounds, that isn’t a Lotus Exige or Elise, I don’t know what it is, but it sounds like the devs just found transwhine for the first time and are keen on using it in everything!

Fail, they need to go back to studying all those videos they talk about.

  • Uff

    lol
Because you obvioulsy know what settings were used for the video. Comments are becoming more pathetic day after day.

  • Jos

aids are on, watch the red lights right bottom.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/driving/needforspeedshift/video/6211605/need-for-speed-shift–fast-corners-from-the-cockpit-gameplay-movie In this video the physics look much more interesting to me. The car is sliding all over, yet is still very controllable. I wouldn’t know the artificial sounds from the real car. As long as it’s convincing who cares if it sounds exactly like the real thing? Of course maybe some people have a inferior sound system. So they’re missing half the sounds? Also many race cars do have a very loud transmission wine. Some thing I’ve never heard duplicated in a single mod or game?

I hope you’re wrong as the driver once again uses all driving aids.
Still waiting for a video where someone uses a wheel and all aids off.
BTW: The KI overtaking attempt at 00:52 was pretty arcade & optimistic :sd:

    Jos:

That’s the transmission. We don’t know how many upgrades have been applied to this car.

That said the speeds look pretty sim-like. Not like GRID. It LOOKS fast but if you look at the speedo it isn’t. The max speed he reached was about 100 MPH and the cornering speeds looked right.

You can’t judge driving physics by watching a guy play (badly) with a controller.

  • carbonfibre

    That’s a better video Howie47.

The stability control seems to be lighting up in every corner, that kills the fun of oversteer I know from rFactor but there is something still very floaty with those physics.

What I’m guessing is that out of the 3 sim modes that were semi-revealed a bit ago; the full sim mode changes a bit more than just disabling all the aids, because it looks to me that even turning off all the aids in that video the car wouldn’t behave right ether.

Again, all this could be put to rest if they just release the demo or some “full sim mode” footage.

I personally couldnt care less whether or not its a sim because its gonna be a huuuuuuge improvement over the crap we’ve had from EA and Blackbox over the past 5+ years

    I fully agree.

Now i wait for the demo. Speculations about gamephysics by watching videos with all aids on are a little bit ……….. mmmmhhh

Im getting a bit tired now of seeing daily videos of a game-pad driven car in arcade mode on a console.

Get it in sim-mode, show me the PC version and get someone who CAN drive and prefers to use a wheel !

In that mode, it is quite GRID-like and Im pinning all my hopes on the sim-modes because anything else is going to be for console-kiddies.

..and I pray there’s an option for removing the on-screen text too. What a put-off. I don’t need a racing ‘sim’ with subtitles.

Simracers are becoming more pathetic by the day, is what I presume you meant to say. If anyone has even a slightest faith in this pile of.. arcade being any way realistic, I’m sad to say you’re up for a big disappointment. EA marketing department sure has seemed to work wonders on the sheeps.

BAA BAA I’d rather be a sheep than be half as pathetic as the “simracer” who made this comment. Settle down. The makers of GTR 2 are behind this game and I think that at least earns it the right of an open minded review. That means not screaming PHOTOSHOP on EVERY screen shot or calling it arcade when all you’ve seen are a few gameplay videos with almost every assist on. At the very least wait till the demo before going all angry sim nerd on it.

    Sodapop said it all :ooo:

Jos: why does every car have that annoying whining noise….

Watch the video that logos posted. Same video, but the higher quality audio make it sound completely different, and subsequently better. In fact the Lotus sounds quite accurate.

  • paupau

“aids or not  , I’m really pessimistic about this game, even if it comes from Blimey itself. Lets just say many came on bankrupted and this is not the best time to risk changing a racing genre game over night, especially coming from EA. Yes, its good to see top company’s taking a slight turn onto simulators, but lets analize this and be realistic. We all live in a corporate world, so why believe EA(a major game company will pleasure sim racers?)and lose money? And why so much NFS here at Virtualr ?

  • Howie47

paupau: And why so much NFS here at Virtualr ?

Because so many Sim racers reported having a great time with “Grid”. If this is like Grid, only with more sim like physics. A whole lot of simmers will be getting it. I think that is what some sim racers are worried about and doing every thing they can to dismiss “Shift” out of hand. They will loose allot of their racing competitors in their favorite game.

  • f0xx

paupau….since NFS Most wanted, fans kept asking for another similar game. NFS Undercover was out and look at the sales? They needed to change the racing genre badly, thats what they did..

NFS Shift till now, looks quite amazing, and even if the driving turns out to be ARCADE, the general quality, visible in the screenshots and gameplay trailers, is at another level when compared to the previous NFS titles (fact).

YOu cant say its going to loose money, they’re loosing money since Pro Street or even before that… only time will tell ^^

    cheers.

You both fail, you guys just post shit and no nothing about this. its tranmission whine. watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgy9vc4rf90 .. this how it sounds in real life so its pretty accurate.

and how the f are you guys comparing GRID with SHIFT ? if you ever played GRID just watch the speedo .. you can do 0-60mph in less than 2sec and taking corners without braking, but in SHIFT.. or like this video I havent seen anything like GRID. its completely a new game. nuff said

yep but your comment remains patetic..

Because you don’t know the product in complete sim mode.

Me too.. but i don’t try hazardous comment..
I wait the demo and THEN i’ll make comments

IMHO this is MORE intelligent :sd:

  • spliff

damn, if they release a few more “NFS GAMEPLAY VIDEOS” i will ignore this game. it’s getting on my nerves, really. release the demo already EA. and to all of you video-releasers: put your crappy assist+nubdriver gameplay videos where the sun don’t shine…

    *sigh*

Who the f**k do you think you are, calling every gamer that is not a hardcore simracer a monkey? Jesus, I start to feel ashamed of simracing. I thought it was for mature people.

  • Howie47

Sharing our thoughts (between sim racers) is a good thing that should be encouraged. Be honest, often or not, what we say stinks in someones mind.
Balancing extreme attitudes with more mature ones will encourage the community’s growth. So let’s be nice. Save your aggression for the track.

  • kkv

Too much brown and dark for being visually realistic. Again the same feeling as if I see through a tiny brownish low grade security camera as in GRID and many other games. Hope it was just re-captured from the screen and not a real replay video.

  • ScHiRoCk

Lol, the sounds when shifting aren’t that good, you can hear them but only AFTER the gear change is already done, hahahahaha!

I have to agree with some people, arcade all the way.

And boy did that guy drive badly!

  • JAGUAR1977

The last few NFS game’s, and arcade racing title’s in general, have been sale’s flop’s. The big hitting racing games are Gran Turismo and Forza, so why wouldn’t EA want some of that market?

The video’s knocking around are of driver’s using all aid’s, the car’s in arcade mode also have increased level’s of grip.

That being said it’s clear the speed’s, braking etc. are all realistic, it’s far from another Grid.

Cool detail that mazda RX7 with an agressive driving overtaking from inside despite of knowing he would miss the apex XD

  • Sensekhmet

Well, it was mentioned in one of the interviews that the AI will always mash the throttle on the straights: it’s the corners where they’ll make mistakes (or not, if they’re good).

  • Howie47

I’m just hoping the AI don’t ram you in the rear. Like in rFactor. They just can’t leave the racing line, so it seems. Any way, “Shift” is generating more talk then any of the other titles covered here. So the anticipation is high. Will see how the honey moon (demo) goes. Before we say are (I-DOs)!

You don’t have to be a dick about it. People don’t know something, big deal.

  • Sensekhmet

To be specific, it’s the sound of straight-cut cogs in gears. A road car has angled cogs (although some cars have straight-cut cogs on reverse gear), because they work quietly, but are not as strong as straight-cut. So in essence, if you hear this whine in a car that is NOT an old Renault (like mine… :sd: ) it has a competition gearbox: either a group N (H-pattern ‘dog box’, usually in stock gearbox casing, but not always) or something more ‘serious’ (sequential or semi-automatic sequential). I think it’s the same story with differential gears, but obviously they’re not almost inside the car, as the gearbox is, so they’ll be not/barely audible.
